Leon had watched the mecha , his left arm tensed and ready. When the man emerged and addressed them he relaxed a little, though not completely. It wasn’t until Fleur de Joie arrived that he stood down, but he kept his eyes on them. When the lady emerged from the machine and rushed over to Marcus Leon was a little surprised, not that he would admit it. He averted his gaze back to the mecha but kept his ears open. “I’ve read enough books to know time travel can be a real bitch.” He said off-handedly to no one in particular as he lazily laced his fingers behind his head. “And if you’re not lucky, pretty boring… Unless you get to fight dinos.” He smirked at Super-bee. At least this had proven to be a distraction from farm work he bemused as Marcus made a fool of himself in his opinion. ”At least someone seemed to have made a new friend.” He thought glancing over at Chitin chatting it up with the one named Joseph. Glancing around at the others he wondered idly how much longer this would get him out of chores.- 74 replies

Leon had grumbled as he left Luke to begin orientation of Angela and James to hunt for the missing students. Despite many debates to the contrary, everyone still insisted ‘scissors beats paper’. “Stupid game.” He thought with a huff as he walked quickly across the school grounds. He and his roommate had argued with each other over why the head mistress had picked them to give the tour. Leon’s guess was that she was still a little miffed over the nightclub incident not too long ago. A few minutes earlier ========= Luke and Leon stood before the new students. Luke looked at them curiously as Leon referred to the clipboard they had been given. “Welcome to Claremont Academy.” Leon said without looking up. “Ah, Leon?” Luke started but Leon held up a finger and continued. “My name is Leon and this is Luke. We’ll be showing you around the campus today.” He flipped through the pages. “Ah, dude?” Luke tried again and Leon looked over at his roommate. “What?” Leon asked. “Aren’t there suppose to be four new students.” “Ya, that’s what the clipboard says.” “Then… where are the other two?” Leon looked at Luke with a confuse ‘what?’ look, then turned his attention to the actual group of kids before them. “Aw, crap.” Back to now ========= The campus was empty so there wasn’t anyone to ask if they’d seen the duo, but that also meant there wasn’t anyone around to know they had already lost two new students. Luck was on Leon’s side and he spotted two girls not far from the library. Two sheets of paper appeared in his hand and he regarded the pictures on them, then looked back at the girls and nodded to himself. He had left Luke the clipboard with the other two profile sheets. As he approached the pair, the papers talked to him. Naomi and Wilona where their names. Street kids like he had been. One had invisibility and telekinesis, cool. The other was all magical fire, cool also, but he’d keep an eye on her. The girls seemed to be looking at an art display some students had set up recently. “So, should we be worried about you two wandering off after shiny objects and things that rattle too?”

GM Brute paused before the doors and glanced back at the group, his gaze settling on Nightscale. “ChArleS waS WiTh MaSteR wHen BrUtE wOke uP.” He said matter-of-factually as he pushed on the metal doors. The light from the other side was bright and white compared to the tunnel’s bare string lights. Beyond the door frame a massive circular room expanded. A few other doors dot the long bending wall and various lab equipment stood scattered around the area. As the heroes enter the room, they can see to one side an area set up with what look like several holding cells. Most appear empty, but a few have occupants and each of their cells seems a little different then the others. One having a wire mesh between the bars, its inhabitant scratching nervously at a stump where her hand should be. A few cells away, a second one completely lacking a door more like a small cold storage locker. The man sitting huddled in it holding himself, shivering as small puffs of breath are visible. In a third cell an older man stretches out an arm through his bars, reaching for something on the floor, the heroes can’t see. The most notable feature is the raised center platform, looking like someone set up a mobile surgery on it. Standing behind the operating table a tall slender man dressed in a dark grey suit and white face mask, featureless except for eye slits, is looking down at large creature sitting on the table. “MaSteR, I…” Brute calls out but cuts off when the featureless mask tilts up, the eye slits focusing on him. The man in the suit waves dismissively at the oversized cat-creature before him and it hops down out of sight. “I am aware of your failure.” His voice is cold and calm, lacking any indication of caring. The man tilts his head ever so slight as the white mask regards each of his visitors. “BuT, MasTEr…” Brute begins again, only to be cut off when the masked man raises a finger towards him. “I have not decided whether I left you with too much independent decision-making ability, or too little. But you did manage to bring several possibly interesting subjects.” The man places his hands on the table before him. “Tell me, is there anything you would like fixed? Anything you wish you could change about yourself?” Behind the mask his tone drips with feigned care and hidden malice.

Chimera Chimera didn’t know who this ‘Charles’ guy was, but she didn’t think she wanted to meet him. As the group descended into the creepy tunnel Chimera wondered just what they were going to find down there. The pipe strewed tunnel wasn’t what she expected, but it seemed fitting. Like something out of a horror film, maybe that one with the killing nightmare critter. Chimera shivered a bit, she hated that movie but Jamie loved it and had made her sit through a marathon of its sequels. “Why do I hang out with her again?” She thought with bemusement in a vain attempt to distract herself as they walked. As they entered the larger she glanced around, noting the tunnel and Outrider’s gesture. She eyed Brute’s back and took a few steps over to peered into the side tunnel, but beyond the little light shed by the light string the darkness seemed impenetrable. Not wanting to split the group she abandoned the offshoot and rejoined them as they entered the double metal doors.

Leon glared at Ghost, his anger fueled by his own issues. As the other man spoke he watched him. His anger was held back by his instincts, he didn’t get the feeling the guy was lying. He glanced around and now that it had been mentioned, Leon could kind of make out a haze that hung over the club. He looked at Luke, then back at Holly and her brother. “Holly, what’s going on?” He tried to sound calm and not as angry as he felt. “Is that true? Was he doing something to everyone?”

Paper was grinning nearly ear to ear as he, step by step, worked his way through the door’s security measures. He hadn’t felt this comfortable and confident in some time, like riding a bike. He was sure Pan would would give him a side-eye for feeling this excited about breaking and entering, but he didn’t care. His siblings would’ve appreciated his skill. “Just like the old days.” He whispered to himself. Nevermind that the ‘old days’ were only about a year ago. When he finally cracked open the door to silence had smiled. The paper bird carrying his phone came down beside him and he looked at it, giving the girls a nod and thumps up to go ahead. With that he slipped inside quiet as a mouse. Paper glanced up the stairs, listening. Satisfied he was alone in the stairwell he crept up to the door and listened at it. Holding cells are normally on the first floor or basement if the building had one. But, offices and interrogation rooms tended to be on the upper floors “If they were smart, they’d have stripped anyone they didn’t trust of phones and weapons, then locked them up. Cells would be the obvious choice.” He whispered to himself again. “Unless they were just encased like those people on the street.” He thought grimly, but shook his head. Couldn’t let himself start thinking like that. He cracked the door and peeked out into the hall. “With the windows covered, hopefully they’ll think they’re secure and the first floor won’t be as well guarded.” He thought as he looked around and slipped out of the stairwell.

Paper / Leon Rooftops A lone figure sat on the roof of a house. In the distance, the grounds of a very private school were visible. The figure set a pair of binoculars down and drew her legs up to hug them, resting her chin thoughtfully on her knees. The setting sun accented her short red hair and made her green eyes shimmer. “He missed our weekly meet up.” Elizabeth said without looking at the new arrival as he walked across the roof to join her. “I know.” A young man with shoulder length blonde hair replied as he stood beside her. “We both knew this would start happening eventually.” “But this soon?” “Leon was always more outgoing then us. Never takes him long to find friends, or trouble.” Richard’s smile was faint, but it reached his blue eyes as he looked out at the distant school. “I know.” The young girl sighed. The young man smiled down at her and sat down beside her. “Seems like only yesterday we were planning the Harrington job.” “We spent three weeks planning that one.” She snickered. “You had him convinced everything was still going as planned, even as it was falling apart.” He chuckled. She sighed again. “That’s only because he wanted to believe me.” He looked over at her and bit his lip. “You know he…?” He let a question hang unasked. “Of course.” She answered, looking a bit melancholy. A moment of silence hung o the air. “Did you know he thought you and me a thing behind his back?” She looked at him in surprise. “Wha-“ “Yup.” He chuckled again. “I told him he was crazy.” She shook her head. “Come on, you two have always been my little brothers. That’d just be weird.” “Ya.” He agreed, his eyes lingered on her for a moment as she laughed. He looked back out towards the school and a silence hung in the air. “I miss him too.” He said after a few moments. She made a noncommittal noise, but he knew her well enough to understand it. The three of them had become a family in those few short years. “Should we..?” She asked as she picked up the binoculars, but not looking through them. This time he shook his head. “We both agreed this is the best place for him. He’s always looked up to heroes more then either of us.” She smirked. “He’s always been nicer then us too.” Elizabeth gave a deep sigh and stood up to stretch. She looked down at her adopted brother. “I guess we should get going.” Richard nodded solemnly and stood to join her, picking up the binoculars as he did so. Using them he looked out at the campus of Claremont Academy. He could make out the buildings and quickly zeroed in on the dorm. They knew which widow was Leon’s room, the light behind the curtain muted and faint. Lowering the binoculars he paused a moment then set them down again. If their brother came, he’d see them and know they still had his back. Even if he was a hero and they were still criminals. Family was family, and you didn’t turn your back on family. A lone pair of binoculars sat alone on an empty roof as the night settled over the city.

Paper nodded at Outrider and looked at Muirne giving her a nod as well. “Watch the screen, I’ll signal you.” He slipped away from the girls and circled around to the back of building, the girls could watch him as his paper bird/phone followed him. At the rear exit he eyed the door carefully. Pulling a few pieces of paper from his hip sheath and approached it. They could see him probing the door gaps for a few moments.

GM Nightscale’s sight doesn’t reveal anything within the large room. Dust covers everything showing the only active up here is from paw prints. This is punctuated by the brief glimpse something the size of a small dog or large cat slinking behind a mostly shattered crate. The big man made a rough sound that it may have taken them a moment to realize was a laugh. “MAsteR saYs ChaRLes iS mAsTEr’s eYes.” Brute says as the metal steps creak under his weight. The stairs descend down several feet into what appears to be an old service tunnel. A single strand of small bare bulbs are all the light to be seen running its length. Old pipes run along the walls, among the long faded lettering one could make out the word ‘STEAM’ and arrows marking flow direction. It seems like there is barely enough room for Brute the make his way, but those following him can manage easily. Inside the tunnel the air is dusty, but not stale like one one expect in such an old tunnel. It’s difficult to see around their ‘guide’ at first, but after several dozen yards it opens up as it connects with another smaller tunnel, the two merging into one larger tunnel. The smaller tunnel is unlit and any one of the heroes could fit (albeit, sans armor), but they can see a few dozen more yards and the pipes disappear into a wall. Set into the wall are a set of old, metal double doors, a thread of light shining through the gaps around them. Entering the larger tunnel Brute seems to start humming off key, heading straight for the doors.

Chimera Chimera was tense the entire time they were following Brute through the alleys. When he finally stopped in front of a couple doors she was ready to spring. Unfortunately, the building seemed abandoned. She followed the big man inside with the others, trying to look around for more trouble. When Brute reveals a set of stairs leading down into who-knows-what, she looks at the others. “Is Charles his master?” She wondered. Outrider seemed to be willing to take the lead as she followed Brute down the stairs. When she looked at Shooting Star she saw the message on her upheld phone. She pulled out her own phone, typed a reply and held it up. [Might help to separate. Looks like we’re going down lower.]

Leon thanked Muirne as he watched the screen on her phone. He gave her an an approving nod when she switch to calling him Paper. Code names from here on would be a smart move. He gave El a quick glance when she mentioned not having a phone of her own. “Need to get you one when we get back.” When she asked about his old job he gave her a mischievous grin and turned his attention back to the video. “I‘ll tell you later. Just add it to the list.” He chuckled as he watched. He looked for hostiles and hostages as his paper bird continued its circuit of the exterior windows. Paper thinks about it for a moment as he watches the video, then nods. “Ya, I think I can.” He looks between the girls. “If you two are sure you want to draw their attention.” “And Shadowborne’s right, hero names from here on.” He adds as he has his paper bird crests the roof on its final leg around the building, just to get a peek up there.

Leon chuckled as Brobee tried to help, spilling more honey on itself, until suddenly the ripple of lightning started acting up. From the lightning ‘door’ emerged a walking bus of a robot and Leon had a bad feeling about it. A feeling he felt confirmed when the noisy mechanized humanoid leveled an open palm at the small gathering around the time machine. Paper had seen enough old sci-fi movies and reacted almost instinctively. He didn’t have much loose paper on him, but it would have to be enough. He pulled a hand full of loose index-sized sheets from his pockets and they stiffened under his power, gaining razor sharp edges. He was tensed to throw them when the bee girl, Melissa he thought her name was, flew out to talk to it, followed by the other girl he didn’t know. “Damn it!” He thought. “They’re gonna get squished!” Leon pulled his arm back to throw but stopped in surprise. The thing actually started talking back. Paper lowered his hand, but kept the papers ready as it seemed to not be as hostile as he had first assumed. He kinda suspected Davyd was a little… off, but he gave Ryder the side eye as he seemed to be taking this all in way too jovial a manner. Maybe talking to all those bugs too long had given him a complex as well. When a new voice piped up from the mecha stepped forward and raised his own voice. “If you’re looking for the Jules Verne reject, he’s with a couple of the adults. But before we tell you where, how bout you tell us why you’re so keen on findin him? In fact, How bout you step out of the tin can and we do this face to face?”- 74 replies

Leon eyed the building, noting the obsidian covering the lower windows. He didn’t like all the armed men he saw moving around. He shook his head at El. “We need to be sneaky until we get inside. Normally I’d say we look for a fire exit or garage door. But this time I think we need to scout ahead.” Reaching into his jacket he holds a hand out of the girls. “Let me see one of your phones.” Pulling his own out he accepts lone of the other’s. Using their phone he video calls his own and hands it back. “Hold on to this for a minute. I use to use this trick with my siblings when we, ah, worked a job.” He admitted as he pull paper from his back pack. Wrapping it around the phone he tossed it lightly into the air. With a quiet rustle of paper the ball of paper unfurled into a paper bird that flew off towards the second floor of the police station. On the phone the girls had they could see the video from the camera on Leon’s phone as it moved to look inside, window by window.
