Lynn laughed at Merge's suggestion. "Well, I wouldn't rule it out! I do an amazing Gretchen impression, as you saw the first time we met, which totally drives her crazy. I've threatened to work a shift as her before, but I'd never do it without her permission; I think she's afraid I'd be a better Gretchen than she is, which is..." She didn't finish the thought, because it touched upon her girlfriend's complicated insecurity; like many artistic people (her own self included), Gretch had a bit of the classic 'big ego, low self-esteem' dynamic going on, and sometimes Lynn's inhuman faerie perfection triggered feelings of self-doubt and inferiority in her all-too-human partner. I wish she could see herself the way I do; I delight in her imperfections and surly nature! At the mention of Nicki, the changeling frowned slightly, mostly because it seemed to affect Merge somehow; was their unique 'relationship' not entirely smooth. "Um, okay; at least I can get copies of her ID now. Help youself to the candy; I'll be right back." Leaving Merge to indulge her sweet tooth from the candy bowl (if she so chose), Lynn stepped outside her office and scanned the store for the duplicator's other self.

Lynn swallowed; had she struck a nerve? She sensed there was perhaps some hidden pain related to his family, either estrangement or even a loss of the boy's parents. Of course, assuming his paperwork was in order, it was 100% not her business, so she decided to move on. "Do you have a resume with you? If not, it's okay; we can always have you fill out one of the genetic applications. We're looking to fill two different kinds of positions, sales floor and coffee bar; both require a great deal of customer interaction, but the skill set is a bit different. Can you tell me a bit about the sandwich shop? Was it busy, and did you mostly do register, or did you help make the sandwiches?"

Gretchen narrowed her eyes and shook her head. "Really? You're going with 'enchanting'? That's embarrassing." She studied Mason for several seconds, her head still cocked to one side like a quizzical bird; the scutiny was intense, but in no way hostile. Finally she nodded. "Well, then. You should probably meet my boss. Her family has connections to the Fae as well." The barista made no move to push a button or pick up a phone, but several seconds later the door to the office opened, and a beautiful young woman stepped out. She wasn't very tall, just a few inches past five feet, but her presence seemed to fill the room with a warm glow. Curly, shoulder-length brown hair framed a lovely face, and her eyes were deep and brown, filled with both intelligence and mischief. This afternoon she was wearing a particularly hideous Christmas sweater, which she somehow almost made work, loose cut jeans and a pair of Uggs. She stepped right up to Mason, offered a firm handshake and flashed a smile warm enough to melt butter. "Hi, I'm Lynn Epstein, owner of Silberman's Books. Nice to meet you!"

Lynn nodded thoughtfully as Elias described his previous experience, her ridiculous hat bobbing as she did so; so far so good, though of course all the immigration paperwork had to be in order. It was encouraging to hear he had some previous experience, especially a job that required you to operate without direct supervision for hours at time. "My first real job was as a bike messenger; it's a good job for a kid, with all the freedom and exercise. Also a great way to learn a new city. Do you have family in the area, or are you on your own? Oh, and would your injury proclude you from any kind of lifting or turning?"

"Oh, great, thanks for coming in," said the woman wearing the elf ears; she was quite beautiful, really, and somehow looked like she could pull off those ears year round. She offered up a firm handshake and a warm smile. "I'm Lynn Epstein, the owner; why don't we step into my office?" She looked over to Lance and Gretchen. "You guys be okay out here?" "Yep!" "We're good." "Cool, cool; follow me...I'm sorry, what's your name?" The store's office was small and seemingly crammed full of books; shelves made of heavy wood covered all four walls, and a massive matching desk also bore stacks of them. There was also a somewhat dated desktop computer and a green-shaded banker's lamp, as well as a candy dish full of fun-sized chocolate bars. In addition, thrre were odds bits of bric-a-brac on various shelves, and an antique pair of firearms, a revolver and a lever-action rifle, were mounted to the wall above the desk. "Please, have a seat, and help yourself to some candy," said Lynn as she indicated a pair of leather guest chairs. She herself sat in a huge, high backed swivel chair behind the desk which matched the guest chairs. "Tell me a bit about yourself."

Once she realized she had a line (this was not an uncommon phenomenon for the 'customer service champ'), Gretchen set aside her magazine and rang people up; when Mason finally made it to the register, she cocked an eyebrow at his purchase, but offered no comment. Once the transaction wss over, she stepped over to the bar to begin preparing his drink. "You mean a caffè mocha, the espresso drink?" Once he clarified his order, she went to work; she wasn't a true coffee bar artisan like Lance, but she was nonetheless highly skilled, and moved with purpose as she pulled the shots and steamed the milk. She presented his drink at the end of the bar in a large Silberman's mug, and it smelled delicious. "You're interested in the Fae," she stated bluntly; this was her attempt at small talk. Now that she was closer, Mason was able to tell she possessed three magical items: her black plastic framed glasses, a simple silver necklace around her neck, and a beautiful silver ring with a large ruby on her left index finger. Curiouser and curiouser! Then she happened to see the white gold band on his finger, and her head cocked to one side. "Family heirloom?"

During the half hour she'd been sitting on top of the statue, Casey did her best not to touch the food before her guest, which would be the height of rudeness. But after about twenty minutes, the fried chicken and biscuits (she'd skipped sides out of fear of sporks or plates blowing down into the park; a Girl Scout does not litter) began to smell awfully good. Besides, she'd gotten the 16-piece bucket of Original Recipe, so even if she snagged a drumstick or two, there'd still be plenty of chicken left over... By the time Echo reached her, Casey was working on her fourth piece of chicken and her third biscuit, with a can of Pepsi held between her knees. Her gloves were off and stuck under her belt, and a plastic bag tied to the handle of the cooler held her trash. "Oh, sorry," chuckled the blonde powerhouse as her cheeks went bright pink. "I got hungry waiting. My name's Miracle Girl. Are you hungry? There's still plenty left, and I've got pop, juice and water in the cooler. Help yourself!"
-
"So you said before that you actually met the Fanatic," Casey inquired. "Did you meet him in an actual real place in our world, or did you meet inside the movie world? Did the Fanatic let anything slip about their real identity? Like, where they worked or went to school, or any mention of family?" Somehow they had to find out who the Fanatic really was; not only to find out where they were hiding, but also to come up with some sort of angle or leverage that could maybe be used against them.

The shotgun blast to the face at point blank range barely made Casey blink, though it did rock her head back for a second, while the other blast got no reaction at all. She stopped right in front of the leader and smiled an icy smile. "I'm Miracle Girl. And I'm shutting your operation down." Suddenly her hand shot up and she flicked a finger dismissively at her shotgun, which nearly sent it flying, though there was a loud crack from somewhere inside the mechanism. Then her head turned as two blinding white lances of light shot from her eyes towards the other gunwoman's weapon, super-heating the metal within seconds!
-
Sorry i sat on this so long; I was trying to figure out how to explain how Casey hit the gun and damaged it, but didn't break it, and then stuff got really busy IRL.
-
"Hi Cathy! Love the costume; I love that movie!" She remembered the day Cathy and a bunch of other newbies had arrived; she'd been planning to take them on a tour of the campus, but then those jerks Huang and Raina showed up, and she didn't feel so neighborly after that. Sadly, she'd largely avoided the newbies since then, which meant she'd neglected her mentorship duties; maybe she should have tried to patch things up with the two magical teens, and not give up so easily. Stepping over to her friend, literally her only friend at school (what happened to her? She was so popular at her old school.), she unexpectedly rested her head on Sakurako's shoulder and sighed. "Don't worry; you're doing fine." She only rested it there for a few moments before she joined Cathy, doing her best to put on a brave face. "So, how was your first year at Claremont, Cathy? Make a lot of friends?"
-
Lynn quickly resumed her own form to address the powerful magical creature. "Ah, hello there!" She waved meekly. "My name is Lynn Epstein. I'm the great-granddaughter of Ira Silberman, the man you call the Amazing Al-Kazar." She shrugged apologetically. "Al-Kazar isn't here; he left this plane of existence many years ago, and, well...he's not coming back." The changeling took a step foward and shrugged again. "Is there anything I can do to help? I possess some skill with magic myself." Meanwhile Gretchen stepped back into the room and crouched at Morgan's side as she quickly checked him for signs of concussion or other blunt trauma. "You okay, big guy?" Despite her normally somewhat misanthropic nature, she was surprisingly gentle with the injured.

Silberman's Books. Sunday, December 11th, 2016. Sundays were sleepy at Silberman's, since the store didn't open until noon on the weekends; this largely eliminated the early coffee rush, but meant the folks who came in now were looking to take their time and stay awhile. The sales floor looked very Christmas-y, and the fragrance of the decorated Scotch pine filled the store. Lynn was in her office checking emails while Gretchen sat perched on her stool behind the counter, reading a magazine; her half trendy/half 'screw you' ensemble pegged her as a former art student, but nonetheless a playful pair of reindeer antlers were perched on her head.

Silberman's Books. Wednesday, Novermber 30th, 2016. 11:00 am Even though it was probably her riskiest hire ever, Lynn was optimistic about hiring Merge; coverage would not be much of a problem anymore, and she felt that once she adjusted her groove a bit to match the tone of the store, the colorful duplicator would bring a lot to the team. But as tempting as a full staff of Merges was (Oh, the looks on the faces of the old Jews of the neighborhood; it would almost be worth it!), the changeling knew she still needed a few more warm bodies. The store was starting to slow down a bit from the morning coffee-and-danish rush, but a handful of regulars were still sipping their coffee. Maddy had the morning off, so it was Lance and Gretchen behind the bar/counter while Lynn walked the floor; today, she wore green curly toed shoes, a bright green sweater and comfy jeans under her brown Silberman's apron, all topped with a red Santa hat and a pair of cute 'elf ears' (nudge nudge, wink wink). The store was decorated in old-fashioned Christmas decorations, including a big Scotch pine covered in lights, and a train set chased itself around the table in the children's section.

Lynn looked everything over and nodded as she filed away 'Nicki's' paperwork. "Okay, great! We cant start your training....mmmm, next Monday, I think...yeah." She typed in a few quick updates on the schedule. "So we'll see you next Monday! Probably shadowing Maddy on the sales floor to start. As far as dress code goes, I'm pretty loose as long as you're not too provocative; I personally wouldn't care, but if it becomes a distraction or a customer complains, than we'll cross that bridge when we get to it." Then she paused and looked thoughful. "I get the sense, and correct me if I'm wrong, that your copies...are freedom. Which I totally get, by the way, because if I was stuck as me all day-" And here she took on Merge's form, complete with pink highlights in her ponytails and a psychedelic take on the traditional Silberman's apron. "I'd go utterly crazy! Our powers are part of who we are, and to deny you access to them would be wrong. So, if you ever feel the need to multiply-” And here she reverted back to her own form. "Just do it; slip out the back for a walk, chat with whoever's in the back room, whatever. All I ask is that you don't do it on the floor in front of a customer, okay?" The changeling sighed and smiled. "I think that pretty much covers everything; any questions for me?"

Grimalkin Lynn cocked her head slightly at the realization that that Klara and Tracy had somehow...no, she didn't want to think about kids again for a long time; she wasn't even sure if Gretch liked kids very much. Still, good to know that the two women had found a way to do it, most likely through magic; certainly motherhood seemed to suit them. But she could certainly talk about the calming eftects of time. "I used to be such a little hothead! It wasn't until I was in my fifties that I began to develop some perspective; family life helped a lot, of course, but a lot of it was just time, y'know? The wisdom of accrued age." Speaking of her lady love, she spared Gretch a quick glance, and was horrified to see her notoriously crowd-averse girlfriend surrounded by people! Omigod, are you okay? I didn't mean to abandon you! I'm okay. I discovered this new thing called 'alcohol'? And it seems to be helping. Okay, well...don't get too s###-faced, okay? If it gets too bad, set off a flare and I'll come get you; we can leave whenever you want. And don't worry about flying, I can always tuck you away in the Vault and fly us both home. Okay. Thanks for checking on me. Always. Love you! You, too.

This 'Echo' might make a potentially good partner, but first Casey had to find a way to contact her, which was easier said than done. If she worked in Midtown a lot, chances are she did at least some rooftop patrolling in the area. So the blonde powerhouse went to the local FedEx Office and printed up some fliers on bright orange paper which read: HELP ME, ECHO YOU'RE MY ONLY HOPE! MEET ME ON TOP OF THE CENTURIAN STATUE TONIGHT AT 9 PM SNACKS PROVIDED A CONCERNED CITIZEN It was a long shot, but it sounded like Echo was young, so she hoped the rather irreverent tone might intrigue her and get her to at least poke her head out, if only to see who would put fliers like this all over Midtown. Which is exactly what she did; she printed out a hundred of them, and taped them them on rooftops all over the neighborhood. And then at 9 o'clock that night, Miracle Girl was sitting on top of the Centurion's head with a cooler of drinks and a bucket of KFC, idly drumming her fingers on the metal. No way is this going to work.
-
Forgive me for throwing you a curveball here, but it just occured to me that Casey is smart enough to know when she's out of her depth, though she's still determined to pull this heist. Would Echo's name come up on a list of sneaky heroes?
-
Casey powered down her laptop and rubbed her face; she had to be very careful about how she proceeded, and not just avoiding getting caught. She was standing on a very slippery slope morally, and she could imagine just how quickly she could start sliding down it into lawlessness. How many other companies could she look into, American or otherwise, and see similar records of illegal, immoral activity? How easy would it be to use her powers to investigate their secrets? And then, how tempting would it take action against them, striking a 'blow for freedom'? This is how vigilantes and ecoterrorists are created, Case; step very carefully moving forward from this point. Taking a deep breath, she returned to her planning, when a thought struck her: she couldn't do this alone. Well, she could, if she wanted to be super-obvious about it, but she was trying not to go that route. So she began a new search, looking for articles about sneaky, stealthy heroes who might be a bit on the shadier side. She could have called on Terrifica, but she wanted to do this without her mentor, if at all possible, for a number of reasons.

The Shrike "I imagine people naked all the time. It's basically my standard operating procedure." Shrike said this with a straight face as she snagged a cosmopolitan off the waiter's tray, so it was hard to tell if she was joking or not. "Keep these coming," she said to the waiter as she swapped her empty glass for the cosmo. "Grim is looking amazing over there by the tall people." "It's usually safest to talk shop. That way you avoid politics, religion and secret identities." She paused to take a big sip of her cosmo. "Several months ago, Starlight and myself wiped out a pack of vampires. It was bad enough they were blood-sucking fiends, but they were also in a band called 'Black Fang'. We saved humanity and the music industry at the same time." At the sight of Asli and Joe's approach, the masked brunette actually smiled and bowed deeply. "DJ Eclectic. We meet again, for the first time. Ways and Means is an amazing album."

So just to clarify, she squeezed CE Prime's gun, but didn't Disable it or Disarm her? Is she just sort of holding it then? And CE 2's gun got hot, got slagged and then she dropped it? Just sort of confused by you saying she's unarmed, and then she drops it.
