"Uh...okay." Gretchen looked around uncertainly, almost as if she expected a camera crew to jump out of hiding at some point; her interactions with Merge had been relatively brief, but she felt the outlandish duplicator might even be a worse candidate for retail than she was, which was really saying something. Meanwhile Lance perked right up at the sight of the attractive, colorfully-dressed woman, and gave her a big smile. "Hi, welcome to Silberman's Books! Can I make you anything?" Once she finally processed that this was indeed happening, the young musician attempted to explain the situation to her partner. You are never going to guess who showed up and asked about the job. Uh, okay. Wait, let me try! Joe Biden? JK Rowling? Tony Award winner Neil Patrick Harris? More shocking than any of those. Wow, really? I'm stumped, then. One of the Merges. 'One of the'...oh wow, really? Um....y'know, what, send her back, send her back! As you wish, m'lady. Gretchen cleared her throat and indicated the door to Lynn's office with a nod of her head. "You can just go on and knock on her door. She's waiting for you."

Just want to have a good idea what happens to Punchline from Adept's attack before I post here again.
-
Things just got a little too interesting right now; Casey though back to a valuable piece of advice her father, aka Vigilant, had given her when she first started training to use her powers: When in doubt, take out the guns first. Miracle Girl took a deep breath, and then hit the three women with a blast of supercharged air, strong enough to knock most people over. She hoped in particular that at least the frailer looking copies would be dropped by the force of her breath, which hopefully removed the threat of shotguns at close range, at least for the next few seconds. And fights like these you fought from second to second.
-
Let's try a bit of Super-Breath; it sounds like all three women are close enough together for Casey to knock them on their asses, assuming she turns her head a bit side to side. it's a DC 20 Reflex save vs Tripping.
-
Too late, Casey saw the festive fireball appear before her before she had a chance to stop; throwing her arms up before her face, she blocked the worst of it, though her face, hair and costume were all covered in soot as she trailed smoke over the boardwalk. However, once she saw the phone booth and its occupant hurling towards the water, the blonde powerhouse instantly shifted targets and dover after the battered box of metal and glass. They just have to drag innocent bystanders into there things, don't they? Don't worry, ma'am, I've got you!

At the sound of his Scottish burr, Lynn chuckled as mists danced around her form, forming into an approximation of traditional Highland dress. Meanwhile, her hair tumbled down to her shoulders in deep red curls, her eyes went green and sparking, and her pale skin was splashed with freckles across her nose. "Ach, nae! I cannae say I have!" She knelt down, her lovely dress rustling slightly as she pulled out the lockbox from inside the safe, along with a few zippered vinyl pouches. She stood and looked for a place to put them, noticed her portal in the air was still open, and then drew it open wider with her fingers before depositing them in the space beyond. It looked like the bower of a wild animal, underneath the roots of a great tree. The floor was soft with pine needles, and sunlight filtered in through the gaps between the roots and earth. Closing the portal with a flick of her fingers, she sighed with satisfaction, hands on her hips. "There we go, safe as houses! Right then, back to your wee runes, laddie!" For her part, Gretchen merely rolled her eyes and shook her head as she continued to text.

Please forgive me, Ecal! -
High above the rooftops, two figures flew invisibly through the chill night air, unnoticed by almost all. They flew hand-in-hand with an unhurried grace, quiet as moonbeams as they- I'm flyyyyyyin'! Look at me way up high Suddenly here am I I'm flying! How is it possible that you can think off-key? Ha ha! It's one of my many gifts! Normally, going into a big superhero event like this, Grimalkin liked to make a big red carpet entrance; flashing a big smile to the camera, posing for selfies with fans, etc. But that was sheer agony for her introverted girlfriend Gretchen, aka the Shrike, who was already stressing about meeting other heroes, so out of deference to her, they were opting for a discrete entrance through the side door. Since Lynn was willing to give up her beloved spotlight for her, Gretch offered her partner a special treat: a little taste of 'pixie dust', courtesy of her Ring of Power, which had more than enough juice to fly them both. Normally Grim had to shrink down to itty-bitty size to get her wings, so being able to share this beautiful night sky with her lover and best friend was a delight. Unlike her mental singing. The two lovely ladies landed softly near the side entrance, and then with great effort, let go of each others hands; in order to maintain their secret identities, Lynn felt that while she and Gretchen were dating, Grimalkin and the Shrike were not. But as 'good friends', they could still spend a lot of time together, though sneaking in a little PDA of course still happened. Stepping inside Freedom Hall, the two heroines were bowled over by the size and scale of the decorations. "Wow. It looks like Daedalus or some other technical wizard really went to town in here." "So pretty!"

Silberman's Books. Monday, November 28th, 2016. 10:00 am. If you worked in retail, the holiday season was always stressful; it had a way of simultaneously bringing out the best and worst in people, and it seemed to go on forever. Since she'd reopened the store in 2014, owner Lynn Epstein had seen business steadily increase each year; their numbers were never going to be amazing, especially given her insistence on paying her employees a decent wage, but the fact that they weren't always operating at a loss made her happy. Of course, considering the large nest egg she'd brought back from Otherworld, she could afford to operate at a modest loss for years if necessary, and she wouldn't even mind; reopening Silberman's was never about making money. But if she didn't want her employees to rebel and hoist her from the yardarm, she desperately needed to hire some holiday help, and hopefully keep a few of them on permanently. Which wasn't always easy when you ran a store that had a whispered reputation for weird goings on... Since she'd put the ad up over the weekend, Lynn had already gotten several resumes via email, which she was currently reading over in her office; she had her 'power team' this morning, Lance on bar and Gretchen at the register. It was early yet, so it was mostly the coffee and newspaper crowd of old Jewish men from the neighnorhood, as well as one or two 'hipster beards' sipping their espresso as they checked their email on their Powerbooks. Need any help out there? No. We're good for now.

It took a second for Lynn to respond, but then she shook her head and spoke. "Sorry! Um, yes, we have...here!" She stood up and indicated that he step behind her desk. "This is my great-grandfather's safe." It was a big steel box bolted to the floor in the back corner of the office. Lynn drew a circle in the air with her finger, then reached into the resulting hole, her hand disappearing up to her wrist. She fished out an old-fashioned key ring with several large keys with she playfully tossed to the young 'magitech'. "Here you go; it's the long skinny one." By now, Gretchen was now almost completely calmed down, but she had a hard time meeting Morgan's gaze; instead, she moved into Lynn's chair and wordlessly checked Grimalkin's website with her phone.

I just realized I undervalued Gretchen's security system on Grim's sheet; the Disable Device check should actually be DC 30!
-
Suddenly Gretchen rose to her feet and crossed her arms tightly across her chest, and when she spoke, her tone was pure ice; her eyes were hard, and the large ruby on her finger began to pulse like a angry heart. "This store already has a state-of-the-art security system, including hidden high-def cameras, heat and motion detectors and heavy-duty locks. I installed it myself. The fact that you failed to even notice it does not speak well of your skillset." Lynn's face went pale; she gave Morgan a horrified look as she reached out to gently put a hand on her lover's arm. Her voice was calm and soothing, like a balm on a bad burn. "Honey, hon, that just means you did a really good job. I've always said we should have a few blinky light cameras set up in obvious locations, just to act as a deterrent; Mr. Crowe can put the runes of true sight on those." "Sure. Why not." Gretchen's posture became a tad less defiant as the changeling continued to try and smooth things over between the two techs. "The Bodega Special sounds excellent, Mr. Crowe; we're very interested in that. But I think a simple demonstration is a good idea, just to put our minds at ease." The ring faded down to its normal shine, and Gretchen slowly resumed her seat at her partner's side, though her gaze nevered wavered; Lynn would probably make one hell of a hostage negotiator!

Lynn and Gretchen looked at each other, and then back to Morgan. "Uh, we're less concerned about shoplifters than we are about, y'know-" "Death curses." "Right, exactly! The 'Three Unforgivables' kinda s###. Necromancy, voodoo dolls, blood-bending, portals to Cthulhu's house under the ocean..." "Creepy toys coming to life." "Anything involving ventriloquist's dummies, puppets or mannequins, really." "Force lightning." "Force choking, too. Pretty much any Dark Side powers is what we're talking about here, so...yeah." "If we can afford it." "If we can afford it."

The psychic contact came as a surprise to Casey, though not an unwelcome one. Hi, Thoughtspeed! Welcome to my head! To be honest, I see problems with both of those plans. If you blind the drivers, you put a lot of innocent people at risk, at least as long as they're going at their current speed, but if we can slow them down first, I might not be opposed to that. Second plan is less dangerous, but may leave the rich owners of the cars mad; then again, cars can always be replaced and human lives can't, so to heck with them if it comes down to it. I'm fast enough and strong enough to just fly down and pick a car up off the road with minimal damage; maybe then you can get under it and due enough damage to cripple it? Might be hard to coordinate, though. During this mental conversation, Casey kept her attention focused on any pedestrians who might be at risk due to the cars' reckless speed, using her telescopic vision to scan the path ahead.

With the holiday season upon us, business is startling to pick up at Silbernan's Books, and owner Lynn Epstein (aka Grimalkin) could use a hand or two. New arrivals in Freedom looking for a way in or old familiar faces looking for a change are all welcome. Retail experience in your backstory is nice, but not a prerequisite. This could be either a temporary thing or part of your ongoing secret identity, your choice. The store's Reputation is now listed on Grim's rep sheet.

Lynn rolled her eyes at Morgan's self-consciousness, but she was intrigued by what he had to offer in terms of security. However, she was starting to get the sense that she should get Gretchen in here; it's not that Gretch knew more about magic than she did (she didn't), but she had a better head for things like security and all things technical. "Well, the building is a lot tougher than it looks; it's actually solid brick and stone over a steel frame, pretty rare for a two story building at the end of the 19th century. But, if we could make it even tougher, I wouldn't be upset. If you don't mind, I want to bring my partner in on this conversation. She's actually a lot smarter than me, and will probably think of things I'd never even consider." Her eyes went unfocused for a second as she nodded her head slightly; to Morgan's trained eye, almost certainly some form of mental communication. Sure enough, less than a minute later, Gretchen entered the office. She looked a bit younger than Lynn, and her clothing and demeanor more or less screamed 'angry art student'; she wore an open US Army fatigue jacket over a Nightmare Before Christmas t-shirt, jeans with shredded knees and a pair of Doc Martins. Tattoos on her skin peeked out here and there, most noticeably the words "The Future Is Unwritten' on the knuckles of her left hand. Behind her black plastic-framed glasses she wore a great deal of eye makeup, and multiple piercings of various kinds adorned her ears. Lastly, a beautiful silver ring with a large ruby was on her left index finger. Gretchen cocked her head to one side for several seconds as she scrutinized Morgan with her dark blue eyes; her gaze was not hostile, merely analytical. Apparently content with what she saw, she simply nodded. "Well, then. Morgan Crowe." She stepped behind the desk and sat on the arm of Lynn's chair, her fingers intertwining with the changeling's. "Tell us about the big security packages. What can and can't they stop."

Technically the Nullify effect over Silberman's only covers 'Summon, Super-Movement [Dimensional Travel], and Teleport Effects of Any Descriptor', but we can handwave Crow not blowing off Lynn's head, I suppose. She really should have more protections in place, but it was what I could afford at the time; plus evil people kept popping in, so that was her primary focus at the time. Maybe my next Reward spending can cover whatever Morgan comes up with.

One of the professors at my school maintains a site called Comicspedia that explores the interaction between 'Geek Culture' and psychology. There's a blog (a bit out of date), as well as a database that allows you to look up specific comics titles based on, among other things, psychological themes. Enjoy!

A very poor rendition of kind of what MG's costume looks like. Imagine the shoulder things are more like protective pads.
