"Well, to be honest, you're getting the 'Friends and Family' rate," said Lynn as she traced a circle in the air with her finger, which Sam knew well meant she was opening a portal into her bizarre, transdimensional 'faerie vault'. She reached in her hand, which promptly disappeared up to her wrist, and pulled out a clipboard with some documents on it. "Some time in the future, when you're back on your feet, we might talk about raising it a bit, but even if we do, I plan to keep it more than reasonable." She held out the clipboard, which Gretch then floated over to their eager tenant-to-be; it was amazing to see how in sync they were now, though it was unclear if it was due to their magical, mental communication or merely the unspoken bond between lovers. "I put Post-It arrows where you have to sign. After that, we show you the Surprise, then stuff you full of homemade stew." "Yes, the ritual Stuffening!"

The young barista came out from behind the bar, revealing loose cut jeans and a pair of Doc Martin's. "If you want to buy books and not just chat, we've got lots of them. We find having actual books really helps with the whole 'bookstore' theme we're going for." She indicated the front of the store with a wave of her hand. "New Arrivals and Our Picks of the Month greet you when you come in, along with the magazines and newspapers we get in." Gretchen took a step up into main section of the store, stopping in front of a door marked 'Manager's Office'. "Oh look, it's the lair of our owner and operator, Lynn Epstein. Let's see if we can rouse the great beast." She knocked sharply on the door several times, which did indeed elicit some sort of irritable growl from within. "What is it?" "Hey, Boss Lady, we've got a customer. Do you want to meet him?" "Uhhhhh...sure, why not. Gimme a sec." Gretchen turned to Cass and nodded solemnly. "Probably not wearing any pants." "I am not! Wait a sec, that's not- " There was an exasperated sigh, then the door swung open, revealing a...very attractive young woman, who looked like she should probably be a model or an actress and not a bookstore owner. She had shoulder-length curly hair and dark brown eyes, and was wearing a white No Doubt T-shirt under a photographer's vest, denim shorts and brown leather flip-flops. Considering she just popped her head out of a small office in an un-airconditioned office, it was surprising that she, too, did not appear to be sweating. "Hi, I'm Lynn Epstein, owner, proprietor and all that other stuff." She offered Cass a firm handshake of her own. "So, whaddya like to read?"

I had no idea we had so many magic-based characters on the site; that alone has been very revealing!

guide gab Freedom League lineup and role

Personally I like options 2 and 3 best. -
No, it's cool. Edited this last post a bit, but it's good to go now.

Aaaaaaand now I feel super-stupid. It hadn't occured to the teen heroine that there technically wasn't a bomb here for them to defuse. Landing nearby with her hand held up and a sheepish expression on her face, Casey was ready to take full responsibility for her mistake. "I'm the one who told them to call the bomb squad." She gestured towards the huge hole in the side of the container. "Yes, they are more like grenades, but they seem like they might be unstable; some of them just exploded and blew out the side of this thing, and there's a ton more of them in there. It seemed like a good idea to have some explosive experts on site." She sighed and shook her head, then held up a hand in half-hearted greeting. "I'm Miracle Girl, by the way; I caught it when it fell."

"Ah, first we need to show you the rest of the apartment, but we can power through that," suggested Lynn, which is what the group proceeded to do. The bedroom was probably half again bigger than what Sam needed, but the changeling mentioned they had an old writing desk in the basement if he wanted it, and pointed out a nice sunny spot for it. The apartment's one closet was also here, as well as a small private bathroom with a shower. Moving into the kitchen revealed the apartment's true heart, a lovely, bright cooking environment with windows looking out onto the deck, gas stove, dishwasher and modern, high-tech fridge. There was more than enough room for a kitchen table and chairs near the windows, and there was a small pantry, laundry nook with washer and dryer, and a second bathroom as well. Heading out the back door took the group onto the deck, which was directly opposite Lynn and Gretchen's, which offered a nice view of a small, rambling cottage garden in the English style. Beyond stood a two-story carriage house in good repair which marked the edge of the property. Taking a seat in one of the deck chairs, which matched the ones in the small inner patio, Lynn looked eagerly at her contracted employee, while Gretchen took a seat beside her. "So, I take it you're interested? I'm looking for seven fifty a month, utilities included, with a one month security deposit. You'd still have to pay for cable and Internet, but that's it." There was a short pause, and then Gretchen finally spoke. "The surprise is like a signing bonus. You only get to see it if you sign the lease." "You are so evil." "Yes I am."

Casey will actually apologize later for that awful joke; it was just the first name that popped in her head.

Casey had gone a little pale herself at the sight of the disturbing figure, and took a step back away from the screen. "Not...normally..." She remembered a Halloween many years ago, when her older brother Josh had forced her to watch It on DVD when her parents weren't home, and the horrible nightmares about Pennywise that she'd had for several weeks afterwards. "That's just...creepy as all get out!" But then she thought about that sign, and what it might mean. "Could there be...more than one person who can step inside the movies? One who's somehow trapped inside? Or maybe it's someone from our that was taken hostage and left inside?" There were so many possibilities and additional questions raised! Casey took careful note of where the strange clown appeared and how far it was into the movie, then turned back to call out to the projectionist. "Sir, we're going to have to check them all; could you please put the next one in, but maybe play it in fast-forward? I can scan them faster that way."

Not sure if we'll really need this, but a better place for stuff than just doing PMs. For the record, I am a very bad chess player, so I don't think we should get very detailed about Gretchen and Lawrence's game

Gretchen nodded thoughtfully as she set out all the pieces. "Okay. I like to play black, because black goes second. That way, you get to see what the white player does first, and then you can start to plan your strategy." She stopped and smiled a little half-smile. "But you're a smart kid, so you probably know that." She gave him an encouraging nod. "Your move." Out on the balcony, Lynn sighed before taking a swig of hard cider, then began laying the various meats on the grill. "It's been...amazing. Things were hard coming back, for a while; just the shock of seeing my family here again, as though no time had passed, and yet you miss so much in three years. My nieces and nephews got so big!" She grabbed a sauce brush and began to slather the burgers with some sort of seasoning blend, and her expression became thoughtful. "I hadn't been thinking of dating at all; after Bill passed, I didn't...it was hard. It was awful, for several years; the thought of being with someone else, after so long with him...ah, f###!" The changeling had to stop to wipe away tears, and then waved off her friend's concern. "I'm fine, I'm fine, don't worry; it's been over ten years for me, but it still hurts. Expect it always will." It took her a few seconds to compose herself, but soon she was smiling again, even though her eyes were still moist. "Being with Gretchen is the best possible thing that could have happened to me; she keeps me grounded and focused, but she respects my space and let's me cry when I have to, and then says, 'Okay, that's enough' and brings me back to Earth." She shook here head in disbelief. "Part of me wondered if I could ever love again, and now...I can't imagine life without her. What did I ever do to deserve to be so lucky? Nothin' that I can think of." Then Lynn pulled the lid of the grill closed and took another swig of cider. "What about you, how are things?"

Miracle Girl laughed ruefully. "Yeah, that always works in the movies, doesn't it?" Then she sighed and gestured at the container. "I don't know if you could tell, but I was barely able to stop that thing; if need be, I could probably fly it out into the middle of the bay, maybe even out to the ocean, but that's it. I mean, I am really strong, but even I have my limits." Then she took a step forward and placed a hand on the supervisor's shoulder. "But you have my word, sir, I will not leave this dock until I've done everything I can to keep all of you safe." With that, she rose up into the air majestically, her hair billowing in the wind. "Right now, I need to do a quick scan to see if any of these other containers are packed with those things." Once she was at a good height, she swept the docks with her IR vision, praying there were no more deadly little globes out there.

Gretchen looked up from her phone and cocked her head to one side. "You need to let me do your tech, if you go back on stage again. I learned a lot setting up Lynn's haunted maze last Halloween. The lights, the soundboard, all that stuff." Lynn brightened up at the mention of Halloween, and she excitedly reached out to grab Sam's arm. "Dude, you have to help us out this year; I'm trying to work out a deal with one of the local corn mazes to spruce it up a bit, provided part of the proceeds go to charity." The young barista turned to the magician and sighed. "She's kind of obsessed with Halloween. It's not healthy...at all." The changeling slapped her partner's arm. "Halloween is awesome; you get to dress up, give kids candy, scare the living crap out of people-" With a sudden swirl of mist, Lynn was transformed into some sort of pale faced, red-eyed ghoul, dressed all in black and perched on the back of her chair! "Jesus H. Christ, don't do that!" cried a clearly flustered Gretchen, though it was followed by some nervous laughter as the Ghoul leaned in close to freak her out. "Stop! I can't even look at you like that, yikes!" "I'm sorry, I'm sorry; I know you hate when I do freaky stuff like that, and surprises," Lynn murmured softly as she returned to her own shape and reached over to hug her best girl, who put up with all her weirdness because she knew the hugs would always follow. "Actually, I don't hate all surprises," Gretch said as she untangled herself from Lynn's arms; she then paused to look meaningfully between Lynn and Sam. "There's actually one I'm looking forward to." "Oh yes, the surprise!" They both looked up at him from their cuddle pile with mischievous smiles...

Gretchen pursued her lips and nodded. "I would not have picked you for a Photo major. You talk too much. All the photogs I dated either lived in their darkrooms or spent all day making Photoshop porn." She pulled a double shot for herself, raised it in a vague approximation of a toast, then downed it. "You're partially right, but I changed majors three times." She smirked and counted off on her fingers. "Musical Performance. Electronic Journalism. Music Production and Technology." Then she shrugged and washed her cup out with hot water from the steamer. "I dated a journo for almost a year. He actually got me to give a damn for a second there." Setting her cup aside, she crossed her arms and considered the young man for several seconds, then abruptly stuck out her hand. "Gretchen."

I could see an organization like AEGIS acting as a 'silent partner' to one of these to help provide extra security; they might see the value of having a site like this active, both for heroes but also as a way to catch villains.
-
I like these ideas a lot! Grimalkin has a website, which is run by her partner the Shrike, but I've never discussed the specifics of it, in part because I know squat about software; I do know she occasionally gets tips through it (many of which are dead ends), possibly via PM. Considering the site was just set up last year, it could easily be hosted under the HeroHouse umbrella.

For several seconds, Casey could not find the words to speak; how the heck did a company this poorly run stay open? Was it a front for drug dealers or something? But then she quickly regained her composure and pulled a business card out of her hip pocket (it was from a dry cleaners in Bayview), squinted down at it, then flashed her most dazzling smile at Mr. Pine as she waved and noisily chewed her gum. "Oh yeah, hi! I'm Case and this is Russell. The agency sent us over." She pointed towards the back of the store. "We change back here?"

Both Lynn and Gretchen draw their powers from the arcane, albeit from different sources (inherent and Devices); not sure if either counts as a 'practitioner' per se, though they both possess Arcsne Lore.

I love the blizzard idea; so many ways to get PCs involved! I had a thought the other day, and forgive me if this was done once before and i missed it, but inspired by organizations like Make A Wish and that Spider-Kid event in SF a few years ago: Hero For A Day! There are lots of kids out there who struggle with all sorts of challenges, due to health issues, being in the foster care system, etc. The Hero For A Day Foundation works with superheroes to introduce young fans with problems to their heroes, who then spend the day with them, giving them 'flying lessons', taking them under the sea or enjoying other impossible adventures. It could easily be a month long event to raise awareness of any number of issues affecting children. Just a thought!

guide gab Freedom League lineup and role
Heritage replied to Ari's topic in The Lighthouse: Catchphrase!
I always assumed the NPC League was international in focus and based on the Lighthouse while the Auxiliary (PC) team was based out of Freedom Hall and handled local stuff. It would be kind of cool to have some kind of mega event shake up the League to open up spots for more PCs.
