  1. This statement led to a wide variety of reactions. Cred0 was absolutely gobsmacked, like he'd been smashed in the face by a two by four. Lance began to laugh, thinking it was some bizarre joke. Maddy let out a long sigh of relief, happy to no longer have to keep a secret. Tona said nothing, as always keeping her thoughts to herself. Kiki appeared to be proud of her friend, as though she'd made a breakthrough at a group therapy session. And Gretchen raised two fists in triumph and declared, "Yes! I knew it!" Lynn held up her hands as she tried to restore some kind of order. "Now I'm sure you probably have a lot of questions, but before we move forward, I feel the need to make another confession, and this one...this is not something I'm proud of. At all." She pointed at the resident computer expert, who still hadn't said a word. "You asked about Mrs. N, Cred0, so now I'll tell you; there is no Mrs. Nussbaum, and there never was." The shopkeeper jabbed a thumb into her chest and hung her head in shame. "I'm Mrs. Nussbaum." This time the reaction was much stronger, because no one had an inclination, not even Kiki; Lance's laughter took on a hysterical edge, and there was much anger and disbelief. "That's not true, you're a liar!" yelled Cred0, on the verge of tears. "Did you ever see us in same room together," Lynn asked calmly. There was some murmured discussion before Lance finally found his voice. "But that's...that's impossible, you're two different-" Suddenly Lynn was surrounded by pale swirling mist, which parted to reveal the familiar form of Mrs. Nussbaum; she wore the same look of shame the young shop owner wore. "Two different what?" No one spoke as Lynn resumed her normal shape, eyes cast downward. "It was never supposed to go that far; it started as a sort of weird...private joke, and then-" "You lied to us!" This was Kiki, tears of rage and disappointment streaming down her face. "Every day, you lied to us; how could you?" The changeling shrugged, clearly pained at the sight of her friend's anguish. "I don't know; I honestly don't know. We do these things because we can, I guess, monsters like me..." She took a deep breath, then trudged on forward. "Look, if you never want to see me again, I don't blame you; I'm telling you all these things because I know they're wrong, and you have a right to know them." She turned and picked up a stack of envelopes from on top of the bar. "I have an envelope here for each one of you; each contains a glowing letter of recommendation and a check for five thousand dollars, to cover rent and stuff. If you want them, they're yours; if you want your job, you can have that, too. The choice is yours; all I ask is that you please not share what you learned today with anyone outside this room." Lynn stepped to one side as she put them back on the bar. For a moment, no one at the table said anything, as the employees looked first at their boss, then the pile of checks, and then each other.
  2. Silberman's Books. Sunday, February 8th, 2015. 10:00am A small printed sign was taped to the inside of the front door window: CLOSED FOR STORE MEETING Shop owner Lynn Epstein was nervously pacing up and down in front of the the bar, her staff mostly seated around the main table in the middle of the sales floor; due to the step up into the older part of the store, this meant they were all looking down on her somewhat. Great; I already feel like I'm on trial. Kiki came from around from behind the bar, occasionally casting a reassuring look towards her friend and employer as she carried a tray with coffee and doughnuts to the table; she was the only one who fully knew what was going on, though some of the others might have a few guesses. Clearing her throat, Lynn finally began. "Uh, hey guys; thanks for coming in a little early today. I don't know how long this will take or...anything, really, so I figured it would be best if we just...well..." Her employees shifted uneasily and exchanged concerned glances; normally Lynn was not this tongue-tied. Sensing their nervousness, the petite brunette suddenly held up her hands. "Nobody's getting fired, if that's what you're thinking, and the store's not closing, either; all of you still have a job." "Where's Mrs. N," asked Cred0; typically he'd work with her on Sunday afternoons. This led to new murmurs of concern; the beloved Jewish grandmother was elderly, so it was certainly possible- Lynn rubbed her face and sighed. "No, Mrs. Nussbaum is fine, that's not why we're here." She sagged back against the bar for a few seconds, suddenly feeling very, very old; but then she took a deep breath and seemed to reinflate. With great effort, she met everyone's gaze, one after the other. "Look, I have a confession to make; several, actually. We've been working together side by side for six months now; we might not all be best friends, but I think we've bonded a bit, right? And some of you might have seen things or heard things, and I think it's time to set the record straight. Because friends don't keep secrets from each other." She paused, closed her eyes and shook her head. "I'm...not human." She grimaced and spread her arms wide. "There, I said it."
  3. Casey liked flying over the ocean; the salt air was bracing, and you typically had good visibility for miles. During the journey, the blonde flier used her radio to point out approaching ships and the occasional pod of whales to her classmates back on the boat; she sometimes also broke into song or tried out a few impressions to break up the monotony. But as they approached the coordinates Sakurako had provided, she slowed her air speed to a halt as she reached for her radio. "Claremont Team, this is Miracle Girl. Are you seeing this fogbank? Visibility is pretty much down to zero. Please advise. Over."
  4. Notice check for Casey: 1d20+3=10 Yes, well there's a reason I put some ranks in Notice for her character edit! :p
  5. Casey was visibly impressed by both Blod and Rampart's entrances, but somewhat moreso by the taller girl's impact; she looked her upand down, a fellow athlete's appreciation. "Wow; looks like I need to kick my workout up a notch!" She offered a firm handshake; it was clear that while she was indeed quite strong herself, she was not yet in Cho's league "Casey Blankenship, aka Miracle Girl; nice to meet you. If you dont mind me asking, how much can you bench? I can only handle a few tons." She didn't offer to shske Blod's hand; her experience with Terrifica taught her sneaky people weren't usually very touchy, so she simply smiled and nodded politely in the Welsh girl's direction. The sole male student's arrival earned a friendly wave and a "Hey, Sam!" After looking at the coordinates and thinking it over, the blonde powerhouse shrugged. "I'd be happy to tow all of you, if you want; heck, I could probably just pick the boat up and fly you all out, but then they'd probably see us coming, unless I kept us pretty low."
  6. Once Sei was gone and the portal sealed, Ana was able to breathe a sigh of relief...which really hurt! To slow down the blood loss and reduce any swelling, she cryo'd herself some 'ice patches'; what would have felt like freezing daggers to anyone else was like a cool soothing balm to the young Terran. "Okay," she said, some of the edge out of her voice as she addressed the other techs. "No more pain, no more distractions; now we just have the work." The pale engineer eagerly returned to her task, softly singing Brittany Spears' 'Toxic' to herself as she worked, tools, parts and fingers flying in an elegant dance.
  7. Casey was rereading Harry Potter again...the entire series at a go, when she got Sakurako's text, which elicited an eager grin. "Oh cool, mischief!" She set Order of the Phoenix aside, rolled her neck as she sat up in bed, and then there was the usual burst of wind as she changed out of her sweatpants and Colorado Rockies jersey into her Claremont uniform; it was her first time taking it off-campus, which she hoped was okay. Hovering in the air, she checked her reflection in her mirror and shrugged. "Not bad; still need to come up with something a bit more personal, though..." Then she flew out the window and banked towards the dock, careful as always to avoid the flight paths into Freedom's airports. Landing gently near her classmate, she politely cleared her throat, then bowed. "Konbanwa, Sakurako-san!" Any chance to practice her Japanese! Looking around the dock, she casually ran her fingers through her hair. "So, a maritime adventure, eh? Need any knots tied? I've got the merit badge and everything." She mimed tying a ridiculously complex knot that could never exist in nature, then winked.
  8. Casey Blankenship Miracle Girl Character sheet link is in my sig.
  9. Sorry to say I just saw this one; my phone doesn't always show stuff in the Welcome to Freedom section. Do you still need a third? Grim might be good for this, though we'd need to figure out a hook.
  10. Grimalkin (4) Empty Mirror (1) Matter Over Mind (3) Deep Freeze (2) Incursion: Blood in the Water (2) Miracle Girl (5) Brain Drain (1) Justice Like Lightning (2) New Addition (2) GM (0) Grim's posts to go towards Deep Freeze.
  11. Due to a series of teacher meetings, this Friday was a half day at Claremont, which Casey Blankenship used to visit the Hanover Zoo; she eagerly took lots of pictures with her smartphone, clicking away like a typical tourist. But then her stomach grumbled, and she unfolded her map of the park, and noted the position of the the Lakeside Cafe. "Ooh, I hope they have cheese fries!" But then her keen eyesight noticed something very disturbing; there were several animals lose in the park! And what was even more disturbing, they seemed to be working together to a common criminal purpose! Casey quickly darted behind a kiosk as she unslung her daypack, and a few seconds later, Miracle Girl emerged! Her costume was still a work in progress; for now, she wore a navy-blue track suit with white pinstripes, along with red cycling gloves and a matching pair of Doc Martens. She hovered in the air, blonde hair billowing around her face as she tried to figure out where to start; then she heard several children scream and the odd 'laughter' of hyenas from near the cafe, and her course was set. She flew towards the structure, staying ten feet off the ground until she got her bearings. "Hang on, help is coming!"
  12. Casey's eyes got big and bright as Sakurako built upon her idea. "Ohmigod, that's awesome! I can totally get the grill going!" Then she stopped and put a hand on the engineer's arm; there was a great deal of power in her grip, but she was careful not to squeeze to hard. "Wait, we have to run this by someone, and get approval; I think I read there's a groundskeeper in the student handbook?" She looked out the cafeteria windows, and then giggled. "I think we need to find Hagrid's cottage!"
  13. Casey winced slightly at the dour boy's sudden appearance, but right now a little backup couldn't hurt; still coasting just above the street, she landed silently beside him. The lightning strikes were practically deafening at this point; she gaped in amazing as the creature flew overhead; her first instinct was to follow it, but the rest of her impromptu 'team' needed her more. "Not sure; did they have one of those in Clash of the Titans?" She clenched her fists and rolled her shoulders. "So, are we ready to say 'hi'?"

    Brain Drain

Casey nodded, sending ripples through her multicolored hair. "Copy that," she murmured as she spared a quick glance in the indicated direction. "Okay, let's lose this pinhead." Raising her voice to a harsh stage whisper, 'Meg' quickly slid her arm around 'Li's' waist (The strength in that arm!) and began to guide her towards the poetry stacks. "So did your father really have your last boyfriend assassinated?" All the while, she was keeping her keen eyes peeled.
  15. Grim's eyes went a little wide as Net Fly began to do his thing; tearing her gaze away from him, she nodded in Triakosia's direction. "Yeah, so I'm pretty much useless at a fight in the air these days, so why don't I stay down here and do perimeter defense?" She flicked out her razar-sharp claws and flexed her fingers. "If they get past the Flying Circus, I'll be waiting down here, like the Cheshire Cat..." She faded away until only a wicked grin remained, and then that too was gone.
  16. Lynn smiled warmly as she helped Maddy to her feet. "Yeah, I can do magic; see?" She held out her hand, and a Maddy action figure appeared, grinning, confident and strong. "Now see this? This is 'Big Badass Momma'; that's who you have to be right now, okay? Strong for Chris and lil' Andy." "Right, strong..." the bookseller said as Lynn led her over to chair; she stared at the doll in childlike wonder as she turned it over in her hands, studying the details of the tiny cape and mask. "This is so cool!" Finally Lynn addressed her universe's archer...in French. <"Hey Tona; is Sam around? There's also a version of me who's gone missing; we need to find her for them to all get home, and I thought maybe Sam could...yknow, track her? With that magic-sniffing nose of hers."> She tapped the side of her own nose, then indicated Maddy with a tilt of her head and a raised eyebrow; she was trying to salvage some secret IDs out of this, even if it might be a doomed cause.
  17. Lynn nodded and pointed at Cerys with her breadstick. "Yes, I did." She took a big bite of it and crunched it for a few seconds, seemingly having a conversation in her head, complete with hand gestures and facial expressions; finally she swallowed, sighed and placed her hands palms down on the checkered tablecloth "So I'm not human; I mean I was, born to two mortal parents and all that, but then I died-" She grimaced. "Aaaaaand for reasons that are still not really clear to me, the Queen of Winter took my soul, or spirit or divine spark or whatever, and shoved it-" Here she slapped her hands loudly together. "Smack into a custom-made glamourous body forged from the ashes of my mortal remains." Lynn shrugged as she raised her coffee to her lips. "Or something like that; we don't really talk. Oh, and I go by 'Grimalkin' when I fight crime." The changeling daintily sipped her coffee as she waited for the girls to respond.
  18. "Me, me, pick me!" Casey does her best Donkey impression :D
  19. Casey rubbed her chin thoughtfully. "Well to be honest, I'm pretty new here myself; I haven't really done the tourist thing yet, other than a short visit before school started." She smiled at tge memory of her brief team-up with Terrifica. Then she brighted up as a thought struck her. "We could have a cook-out! Get a good fire going, make hot dogs and popcorn, stare up at the stars..." Suddenly she felt like the biggest dork in the world; 'have a cook-out'? Could you even see the stars in Freedom with all the light pollution? The athletic blonde hunched her shoulders slightly as she scooped up a big pile of veggies, her cheeks a little pink. "Or, we can just watch a movie..."
  20. Okay, I am officially killing this thread, not that it had much life left in it anyway; I think I went too big in terms of number of players and scope, and I never finished writing up the Queen of Autumn. Let's assume we defeated the bad guys and saved the day, and remember the connections made between our characters. Sorry to do this, but thanks to everyone involved, and I really loved the creativity you all showed in designing stuff for the haunted house!
  21. Grim nodded as the other heroes present began to offer up ideas, rubbing her chin thoughtfully. "Alright, I'm just gonna start." She indicated the circle of psychics with a jerk of her head. "These guys are way too exposed right now, so let's fix that." The changeling waved her hand, and a low dome appeared over them, about ten feet high; it seemed to be made of some kind of stone, completely smooth other than several holes along the bottom edge and in a ring near the top. "Okay, that won't keep out everything, but it will stop small arms fire, low-powered energy weapons and some blast damage." She clapped her hands together and rubbed them vigorously as she grinned and looked about. "So, who's next?"
  22. Taggged! And thanks so much for including the awesome map!
  23. Ana could feel her blood trickling down her ribs and into her armor; typically, she was more concerned about the electronics shorting out than her own injuries. At least she'd taken care if the antibodies nearest her, so she could return to her work. But the sounds of conflict made her wince; clearly the rest of the ship was still in danger. With considerable effort, she called out to her reptilian companion."Sei, help the others take down the rest of these bastards; I can seal the doorway off until you get back." Once she was gone, the cryokinetic filled the portal with a foot-thick wall of ice, leaving only a narrow hole through it for communication and air flow. To herself as much as the other techs still present, she said "Right, let's get back to work..."
