  1. Yes; the first part will be a short 'getting to know you' session, and then we'll cut to Halloween night when the joint will be jumping!
  2. Pier 13, Saturday, October 18th, 2014. 10:00 am GM A lonely construction trailer sat in the middle of a small sea of concrete at the base of the pier; beyond it stood the long enclosed shed which thrust some eight hundred feet out into the river. The shed was three stories tall and stoutly built, with a dark metal roof, and a concrete walkway some thirty feet wide went all the way around it. In front of the trailer stood Grimalkin, looking somewhat out of place in her domino mask and black-and-midnight blue leathers at this hour of the morning. Next to her was parked a man in a wheelchair, wearing a black bandana mask similar to the Dread Pirate Roberts from Princess Bride; he had a long salt-and-pepper ponytail and trim beard, and wore an old denim jacket, flannel shirt, jeans and paint-stained work boots. The wheelchair has covered in various rock band, leftist and union bumper stickers. "This is insane." "Best idea you ever had, if you ask me." They both drank their cups of Starbase coffee at the same time.
  3. Grim shook her head, her ears still ringing from the impact; clearly flight was impossible. But then she got a good look at the driver, and she groaned. All the first aid pamphlets tell you not to move someone who's injured; the movement can reopen a would that's partially clotted and cause someone to bleed out, plus neck and spinal injuries often respond poorly to any jarring. But an abdominal wound is bad news, and that position he was could not be good. "Oh God, I'm gonna regret this..." Crouched on the upturned roof below the driver, Grim conjured up a thick layer of cotton padding the size of a mattress, then returned to her normal size. Bracing her body for impact, she flicked out her razor sharp claws and prepared to carefully cut the seat belt and lower the injured driver on to the padding. Before she made the cut, she quickly prayed in Hebrew, and then got to work.
  4. Silberman's Books. Saturday, October 25th, 2014. 5:01 pm Kiki, assistant manager extraordinaire, escorted the last customers out the front door, and then thankfully locked it; with her best friend and boss Lynn 'Grimalkin' Epstein being so focused on her big charity haunted house on Pier 13, most of the day-to-day operations of the store were resting firmly on her shoulders until after the 31st, and to be honest it was exhausting. When Lynn had mentioned closing early for an office Halloween party, Kiki surprised even herself with her excitement at the idea. "The customers, they are no more." That would be Gretchen on the intercom. Kiki adjusted her artistically-damaged thrift shop jacket and primly marched to the middle of the sales floor; she'd decided to go with a scarecrow for her costume, primarily because it was cheap and would allow her to wear a hat. "Boys and girls, we are closed; let the party begin!" There were whoops of delight, and Gretchen started up her new playlist, which started with a special spooky remix of 'Everybody (Backstreet's Back)' she'd put together. Lance the barista, dressed as one of the zombie football players from Beetlejuice, was serving up punch behind the bar. "Hey, where's Boss Lady? I thought this whole thing was her idea?" Kiki rolled her eyes as she scratched at the straw poking out of her sleeves. "I think she's working on a dramatic entrance..." She indicated the door to the owners' office with a nod; there was a strange mist creeping out from under the door...
  5. Casey realized too late that she had probably breached some Japanese social more or other, and gently released Haruko's arm; she guessed it would probably be best not to even mention it, so she continued talking. "Oh yeah, it gets super hot and muggy in the summer, but in the fall and winter it's great; that's when we always used to visit growing up. We visited Grandma and Grandpa every winter, then hit one or two of the parks; Universal Studios and Disneyworld are my favorites." The waitress returned with their drinks and both of Casey's salads, which she tucked into with gusto; between crunchy mouthfuls, she began to ask Haruko all kinds of questions about life back in Japan; what school was like, what she did for vacation, how the seasons were different from the States. She was a little less forthcoming about her own life, or at least her family; she said her father was in the military, but became uncomfortable and quickly switched the subject back to her new roommate.
  6. Ana snorted. "Well, lots of officers just went to the academy on their parents' dime; guess we'll see just what he's made of out in the field. Engineering out." The beginning of a journey was always exciting, but once you were underway things quickly became routine; Ana decided to pick up one of her old projects, rebuilding an old Lor intra-system surveillance drone. You never know what might be useful out among the stars...
  7. Ever the gentleman, The Man is allowing Noemi to go first; no need to roll for Initiative.
  8. GM The Man sighed deeply and nodded; just then, one of the gunmen's phone began to buzz insistently. "He's going to send the big guns soon; these goofballs were rentals." The hulking professional killer rolled his neck and shoulders, and then unexpectedly bowed and spread his arms, holding his knife almost like a conductor's baton, and smiled ruefully. "May I have this dance?"
  9. The waitress took their menus and went off to place the orders. Casey idly checked her phone before returning to the conversation. "Yeah, I could see that, at least based on the bits of Project Runway I've seen. So do your parents live here in the States now? My family's all back in Colorado; well, my dad's parents live in Miami." Suddenly a thought hit her, and the blonde reached out and grabbed Haruko's arm, an excited grin on her face."Oh my God, I have to show you Miami sometime! It is so crazy and amazing!"
  10. GM The Man rolled his eyes, spared a quick glance at his watch and rubbed his face with his free hand, clearly not having a very good night. "Look, I really don't want to have to hurt you, lady, but I'll be honest with you, I'm not a very nice man. Some other bad men hired me to kill an even worse man, so that's what I've got to do." He sighed and shook his head, clearly not happy with the situation. "If you leave right now, just walk away, I will let you live; if you don't, than I'm afraid I'll have to kill you, too. And I'd really hate to have to do that..." He held his hands out in front of him, still holding the knife but practically begging the Rat to leave.
  11. Casey frowned thoughtfully at Haruko's last comment. "Uh, you lost me there; is that a thing? Sadly I haven't spent much time out of the country." The conversation was briefly interrupted by the arrival of the waitress; before she placed her order, Casey sheepishly fished a small card out of her wallet. "Uh, I have this thing, a special diet request...?" The server looked it over, nodded and returned it back with a polite smile; clearly relieved, the blonde grinned as she sat up a little straighter in her seat. "Great! So I'll have the Yankee pot roast dinner, please, with the baked potato, bleu cheese dressing on the salad and the French onion soup...and the spaghetti and meatballs ala carte, with garlic dressing on that salad. Oh, and a Coke, please. Thanks!" She handed her menu back to the waitress and politely waited for her roommate to order.
  12. Ana nodded politely to their guests and headed back to engineering; once there, she called the bridge on her headset as she kept her eyes on the diagnostics. "So, fearless leader, do you anticipate any trouble with these two? Bet you twenty credits I'm in and out of the general's cabin adjusting the atmospherics the whole trip..." The young cryokinetic pondered how often her life was similar to that of the super at an apartment building
  13. Okay, this thread will be in two parts; the first part will be sort of a 'getting to know you' session, scheduled to take place on Saturday, October 18th, and the second part will take place on Halloween night itself, representing the last day the hunted house is open and the day things go all screwy. Not sure if I will actually split the thread or not, but I might just to keep things easy for bookkeeping. Both parts will take place at Pier 13 in The Waterfront section of Freedom. There is no expectation that the heroes volunteering would be there every day, since this whole thing would take place over two weeks (10/18-10/23 planning and construction, 10/24-10/31 the house is actually open). Players can decided how much time their character does or does not spend on the project, which really isn't terribly important anyway. The first thread will be pretty quick, I'd wager, while the second part will be a bit more involved. I will link the IC and OOC into this thread once they are up. One last thing; I've decided to go ahead and GM this (thanks for offering, EP!), which means this will be probably fun but kind of messy rules-wise, so please bear with me! Now keep your arms and legs within the car at all times, and enjoy the ride!
  14. I thought you might want to do that, Cape; have fun with it!
  15. Okay, I think this thread is ready to cap off; here's what we're looking at now: Grimalkin - PL12 [Design/Construction/Oversight] Terrifica - PL10 [Technical/Security] Miss Grue - PL10 [spookiness/Security] Red Rat - PL8 [spookiness/Security] Coiled Lightning - PL7 [spookiness/Security] Vector - PL10 [Guest] The way I see this breaking down is as follows: 1. With her control of glamour, Grimalkin can create objects out of thin air up to the strength of hard stone; she can therefore whip up a lot of the haunted house with but a thought. Due to her connection to her glamour, she can see and hear through anything she creates, as well as teleport via stuff she's made. This allows her to monitor the whole operation and teleport to any known danger zones. 2. Terrifica will design and supervise all the wiring, with lots of input from Coiled Lightning; we're talking ghoulish animatronics and the ride cars themselves in the Haunted Warehouse, and dramatic lighting in all three 'worlds'. Also security devices like closed circuit cameras, alarms and various safety features. 3. Grimalkin and Terrifica will start the active part of the thread in a sort of mission control area, probably raised up high near the ceiling of the pier so they can look down and see trouble spots, but they will mostly rely on an the CCTV and radio contact from folks in the field to look out for trouble; Grim's ESP will be supplemental to the hard tech 4. Coiled Lightning, Miss Grue and Red Rat will be 'rovers' that essentially serve two functions; they will wander the worlds in costume to help scare the guests, with lots of help from young civilian volunteers, but they will also act as on-call security. This might be simple bouncer duty to help remove unruly and/or drunken patrons, but also to help out with any emergencies either mundane (fire, structural damage, etc) or super (villains attack, hostage situation, etc). All three will be provided with small discrete comms if they need them, though Miss Grue's telepathy might be more effective. There will also be uniformed professional security highly visible on site as well. 5. Vector will be a guest, either with some friends or going solo, and will be sucked into the action once things go south. How does this sound to everyone? Obviously PCs with other useful skill sets can volunteer to help out with construction as well.
  16. Grimalkin - PL12 [basically running the show] Terrifica - PL10 [Technical] Trailblazer - PL7 [um, general spookiness?] Vector - PL10 [Guest] Miss Grue - PL10 [spookiness!] Red Rat - PL8 [security ]
  17. Cape: I think RR would best be used in costume; Grim is looking for super help for both scares and security, as she knows this sort of thing draws supervillain attention. The Rat could help out any ways she wants!
  18. Grim basically put out a public call to volunteers, both heroic and non, to join her for 'an epic Halloween charity event'; I'm assuming a website would have been put up as well.
  19. That would be awesome, Cape! Is this something she would be interested in as a volunteer/staff member or more as a guest getting caught up in the action, as I believe Vector will be?
  20. So right now, I'm looking at Pier 13 as our location at the Waterfront; the large 100,000 square foot building is divided into three sections, which are $10 admission for each individual section or $25 for a pass to all three. Part 1 is the Haunted Warehouse, an old-fashioned dark ride which is probably PG in tone. Part 2 is the Dark Forest, sort of an indoor hedge maze with a dark fantasy/fairy tale theme. PG13 with wandering witches and goblins, etc Part 3 is Zombie Hospital, which goes for a Walking Dead/survival horror game feel. Gross and bloody, very R rated!
  21. The two new students were escorted to a booth by the hostess, where Casey started hungrily eying the daily menu. "Oh wow, I'm really gonna like it here!" She paused to lower the menu and consider Haruko's question. "Oh, I have lots, really; I've been a Girl Scout since I was five, though to be honest I think of that as more like a 'calling' than a hobby." She grinned and winked. "So yeah, anything outdoors I love; hiking, camping, white-water rafting. I also just got my student pilot's certificate, so I can actually fly airplanes, too." The blonde was lost in her contemplation of the menu for a moment or two, idly squeezing her lower lip as she tried to figure out what she was going to devour. "I'm sorry, just...so what hobbies do you have, Haruko-san?"
  22. Horn: By guest you mean have Vector as an actual visitor to the attraction? That could work; the place should really be wheelchair accessible anyway. Okay, I get the sense that I'm gonna be running this thing, which is fine; I am willing to have two tiers of heroes in this, with two levels of threats for them to deal with: Big Bad for the PL10-12s, followers of Evil for the PL7-8s So far, we have: Grimalkin - PL12 [basically running the show] Terrifica - PL10 [Technical] Trailblazer - PL7 [um, general spookiness?] Vector - PL10 [Guest] Anyone else interested? I'd like at least one more street-level hero to keep Trailblazer company.
