  2. "I'm a musician mostly," Gretchen said as she set aside her drink."Lyrics, composition, instruments, recording and mixing. I've got a nice little studio set up in our garage. Good acoustics. I also write a little code, but I'm better at web design. I still like to get my hands dirty, taking apart and rebuilding old synths. And I love designing a good security system." Then she sighed as she ran a fingertip around the edge of her glass. "People think I'm this antisocial misfit, but I'm really not. I can read people fine. I just don't think most of them are worth the effort." The young barista continued to play with her drink as she shrugged, a hint of smile on her lips. "And yet, here I am..." - - - To all Leviathan's senses, the enormous oak chair was entirely real, and smelled of organic varnish with a whiff of charcoal stain; the thing had to weigh several hundred pounds. "Uh, I can make all kinds of things," Grim said with an offhand shrug. "Wood, stone, leather, glass and fabric are the easist things to make; I can't make metal at all anymore, unfortunately. It lasts as a long as I want it to last. And it's as real as I want it to be." The changeling casually reached behind the crimefighting behomoth and stuck her arm clear through the back of the chair as if it were air, then pulled it out, waited a few seconds, and then proceeded to loudly knock on it! The elfin beauty shook her head and burst out in peals of laughter. "I mean, it's totally crazy, I know; glamour makes no logical scientific sense whatsoever! It refuses to conserve mass or energy, it's not a wave or a particle; it just is. And that drives my more scientifically-based friends crazy." She could only shrug again. "I don't know what to tell ya; I don't know how it works, I just make the stuff."
  3. A little down in the dumps this week, but should be feeling a bit more posty later today or tomorrow.
  4. Silberman's Books, at the corner of Pratt and Frederick. Tuesday, January 23rd, 2018. 10:00 am. Today it was the 'Tuesday Morning Power Trio' on the floor at Silberman's; Gretchen dutifully working the register, Lance at the bar pulling shots and making the magic happen, and Maddy on the sales floor with her warmth and English Lit degree. The morning crowd of old Jewish men playing checkers and moms chatting chatting over coffee while their babies dozed in their strollers was very much in evidence. The store's owner Lynn Epstein was in her office, sipping coffee and reading resumes while waiting for another applicant to show up for her interview.
  5. Lynn blinked for a few seconds, then shook her head slighty; she was used to the ears being a dead giveaway. "Oh, no, I'm totally..I'm a faerie. I mean, 'of the Fae realm' might be a more accurate way of putting it. That's the source of my power." She cleared her throat, then drummed her hands on her desk. "Okay, well, from a future employer standpoint, my only concern is, do your powers pose a threat to my store or my staff? Am I safe in assuming you have full control over..." She made a vague hand gesture. "Whatever it is you can do?"
  6. Grim held up her hands and shook her head. "Hey, its all good, dude! I respect the sanctity of secret IDs, even if my own can get kinda flimsy. Here, why don't you take a load off so we can talk a bit more comfortably." She gestured, and a large wooden chair appeared off to one side, perfectly scaled for Leviathan's massive frame; it appeared to be a sort of medieval, with a high back and wide armrests. The changeling indicated the aquatic hero should take the conjured seat while she hopped up on one of the armrests, her feet playfully dangling off into the air. "There we go! Now I don't have to shout and you don't have to get a crick in your neck. Please, come join me!" - - - Gretchen shook her head. "Sorry to hear about your father. I've lost important people, too." Picking up on the technopath's change of subject, she smirked. "It's not really that big of a deal. I enjoy pretending to be offended more than anything else, but I do think it's more of a term for a kid in tights. Not that I wouldn't look amazing in them..." Yep, still a little flirty! Then she took another sip of wassail and returned to more serious conversation. "Do you come from a technical background? Despite the magical basis of my powers, I'm much more comfortable working with hardware. Electronics and computers are more my thing."
  7. Are we keeping this one going, or letting in go? Edit: just to be clear, I'm fine either way.
  8. Ditra nodded at the Praetorian's comments, somewhat distracted by the sheer volume of information she was currently processing. The presence of several criminals was alarming, though it would be foolish to assume they had hostile intent, or at least, any more hostile than the politicians and corporate hacks who were also present; after all, some would argue that the more 'respectable' attendees were far more dangerous than the criminal element. Without moving her lips, the Nameless agent sent a narrowband broadcast to the Terran's comlink. - "If you ever desire to speak telepathically, let me know; just 'shout' in my direction, and I'll hear you." -
  9. Ditra chuckled to herself; humans and their perpetual need to name things! But she was equally curious about this gynoid and what her purpose might be. "And I am Ditra Fifty-Five. My people don't really have a home, though our fates are entwined with the Lor." The cyborg paused for a moment to look at all the holographic displays before continuing, gesturing towards their surroundings. "How...long have you been in here?" Meanwhile as she spoke, all her sensors continued to absorb data at an astonishing rate; there was so much to record!
  10. Grim has conjured up a basin full of water and a towel to wash up, wiping off all the snake blood before dismissing them. "Well, we saw a Gwyllgi, found many symbols of Gwydion and found an adder stone, all of which are associated with Welsh magic, but we still have that Olmpian blood from the purse that led us here. Plus I saw some sort of fetch of my late husband. What's the common thread? Is there a common thread beyond magic?" The changeling gnawed on her thumbnail for a few seconds. "What if..what if whoever owns this house is luring people with connections to the supernatural to this town? The artifact your tracking, the book I purchased, whatever drew our mysterious Olympian abductee...what if they need us for something?" She shook her head, then dropped into a crouch as she made ready to press on. "Let's see if we can find out what Nagini was guarding..."
  11. Gretch does some RPGing, too, probably Skyrim and Fallout these days.
  12. Very cool! As I said, not sure how much posting will come out of the idea, but I love it for the detail. Also, what sort of games would characters play? Gretchen is all about first person shooters, and is very into the Call of Duty series, PUBG and modded GTA 5 Online, all for PC. Lynn is a hardcore Mario Kart racer from way back, and is very much a Nintendo gamer. They probably play Overwatch together, assuming it exists in-universe.
  13. Casey suddenly clapped her hands together and pointed at the empowered paramedic as her eyes lit up. "Yes! That's what I was- " But then, she had to stop just as abruptly, as she couldn't reveal the existence of her x-ray vision to the cops, or at least not in front of the whole restaurant. "I mean yeah, that's what I kind of, uh, saw during that, like, brief minute I was treating him..." She held up two fingers to indicate a very small gap. You know, Case, anytime you want to claim that 'World's Worst Liar' trophy, it's waiting for you down at the Idiot Shop. Taking a deep breath and putting her hands on her hips, she turned to look back at her sorority sisters, who were all giving her various interpretations of the 'WTF?' face, and God help her, all she could do was shrug and look apologetic. "We're, like, so close to being done here, guys, I promise!"
  14. It took Grim a few seconds to figure out what was going on inside the gigantic hero's brain (or at least, close enough to guess) as she watched him with one cocked eyebrow, but then she suddenly nodded. "Ohhhh, I get it; 'If I told you, I'd have to kill you' kinda deal, huh? Top secret and all that jazz? I can dig it. Seriously, though, we're always happy to work with new people. Well, I'm always happy to work with new people; Shrike..." She sort of squinted as she wagged her hand back and forth. "But yeah, you can always reach us via our top secret email address." The changeling conspiratorially beckoned for him to lean down as she handed him a conjured business card which simply read: tinybrunettesquad@herohouse.com Meanwhile, Gretchen took herself and her wassail over to Replica's table; she was still intrigued by the mysterious technopath, and wanted to learn more. "So what is your story, madame? You're trying so hard to fit in while maintaining a safe and impartial distance. I know this look well."
  15. Gretchen just stared at Hysti's extended hand for several seconds before she let out a quick, barking laugh; she didn't laugh very often, and it was surprisingly loud. "Wow. Boy, did you get screwed when you picked someone to seduce. You just slept with one of the least ambitious people on the planet." She sighed and shook her head as she pulled off the witch's robe, casually tossed it aside, and methodically began to get dressed. "This country that you're in right now is full of ambitious people. People who would gladly push their own grandmother off a cliff to obtain the kind of power you describe." She paused as she was about to zip up her fly. "And all of them are colossal ***holes." zip "You are barking up the wrong tree, missy. We need to suit up and find your necromancer."
  16. Cool! Lynn has Dexterity 26, which I would have to think gives her excellent hand-eye coordination with any sort of controller. Also she and Gretch share a mental link, which would give them huge advantage in any sort of FPS shooter game. I also imagine Lynn has on occasion used her Morph ability to do eerily accurate impressions in team chat, just to mess with people's heads
  17. So this is a pretty random idea that I've had for some time; it's not a major character detail, but I think it might be sort of fun to explore, maybe even just at the background level. How many of our Freedom City heroes are avid videogamers? The idea that I had was that Gretchen (aka the Shrike) is an avid gamer, as is Lynn (aka Grimalkin), but they feel that their special abilities gives them unfair advantage playing online games with non-heroic players. Might there be like a mega-secure Discord server or something else set up through HeroHouse that allows heroes to game together between crime-fighting and world-saving, and just gives them another fun level of connection?
  18. Hit a bit of a rough patch recently; school has been challenging, and I'm seeking psychiatric help for...whatever it is I'm currently going through (Anxiety? Depression? A bit of both?) to supplement my regular therapy sessions. I'm not in any danger of doing anything harmful, just really struggling right now. Posting helps a lot when I have the energy to do so, as it's a positive creative outlet, it's just things have to be aligned right for me to do that. So you'll see me pop in now and again in the days to come, posting here and there, but there may be lapses as well. But fear not, I am never far away!
  19. PUMP'D by HGM Miracle Girl Using 4PP to increase her Super-Strength by 2 ranks. Also adjusted her age to 20; our girl is growing up so fast! Edit: Using 2 new PP to increase her Impervious Toughness to 8, which is as high as I will take it.
  20. Gretchen let out a long sigh as she looked first at Merge's faux innocent face, and then the vacant register the annoying duplicator had abandoned; at least this time she hadn't walked away from a line. "Yes, he is reasonably attractive, as you yourself would notice if you looked at him for longer than five seconds. But you have the attention span of a gnat, so I know that is a lot to ask." -Can we just let Merge openly duplicate? It's the one useful skill she actually possesses.- -I'll take it under advisement.- -That's all I ask.- Back in the manager's office, Lynn was surprisingly unfazed by Marcus' demonstration of power; she'd long since lost track of all the weird s### that has taken place in this room. She did, however, nod in appreciation. "That's pretty cool; I take it that's only a small taste of your power, because I can do that, too, if I scuff my socks on the carpet." Her smile was warm and playful. "But you're quite right to quiz me on my bonafides; the mystical world is a wonderful but dangerous place, and one can never be too careful." The bookseller then turned her palm up, and a small figure of Marcus himself appeared in a swirl of vapor; it was about six inches high and amazingly detailed, wearing a hopeful smile and the same outfit he was wearing for his interview, but holding up a placard sign reading 'I MAGIC'. She placed it in front of him for his inspection. "It's glamour. Go ahead, pick it up; it's as real as real can be." Then she smiled and lifted back her curly hair to reveal one of her lovely pointed ears. "I trust you to know its significance."
  21. Casey nodded and numbly played along. "Uh, yeah, we were just talking about Stranger Things; that poor kid, Will..." Then she turned to her sorority sisters and spoke to them in a harsh whisper. "Look, we have to stay until the cops arrive and release us; I know it sucks, but that's the law, and I really want to make a statement about our so-called 'doctor'!" Once the cops and EMTs arrived, Casey could not hide her delight as she looked over at 'Dr. Johnson' and spoke to him in obvious mock sorrow. "Oh no, you're going to be late for all your late night appointments! Darn!" When the officer in charge asked for witnesses, the Girl Scout eagerly stood up...and then really thought back over everything she'd seen, and the smile drained from her face. Really, there was nothing but her 'expert analysis' of the victim (the word of a civilian with some first aid training versus a doctor) and her gut, which told her that this man was no good, nothing that on paper could possibly be incriminating. Casey then volunteered her view of events, given in a small voice without any of the glee or confidence she felt a few moments before. She did her best not to provide any opinions, just the facts as she knew them. She described Darlene's flirting, Red's approach and how he appeared at the time, the old man's attempt at gallantry, Frank and Moe's attempts to calm the situaton, Red's collapse, her own efforts at CPR and what she saw about his condition, the doctor taking over his care, and then the sudden announcement of Red's death and what the doctor said might be the cause. For what it was, it was excellent testimony. Feeling completely drained, Casey slumped back into the booth and put her head in her crossed arms on the table, only for her 'sisters' to put their arms around her shoulders or pat her on the back. "You did good," muttered Steph with a certain amount of admiration. "You journo majors have a real eye for detail." "Thanks," she mumbled wearily.
  22. Casey has never been happier to see the boys in blue!
  23. Gretchen didn't say anything for a while, but then she finally shook her head and smiled her little half-smile. "Wow. It really is about the power for you. What will you do once you have his power? Will there ever be enough power for you?" Meanwhile she fired off a mental message to her lover. - I need you to text something to Queenie. - - Go for it, I've got pencil and paper. - - - - A few moments later, the heroic restaurantuer received a troubling set of texts from her friend Lynn Epstein.
  24. For whatever reason, this so-called 'doctor' was extremely insistent about leaving Joe's; perhaps because he was eager to leave the scene of the crime? Casey couldnt see any signs of blunt trauma, but then her x-ray vision only showed her bone, not soft tissue damage. Then a thought occured to Casey, and she once again spoke to the Japanese waitrsss in her native tongue; she was much calmer now, so much of her fluency returned. "Look, if he insists on leaving, maybe let him go; I don't trust him at all, but we can't legally restrain him." She took a deep breath before continuing. "I have powers, like you; if need be, I can follow him and see where his late night 'appointments' take him." Then she nodded dismissively towards Blue and the rest of his boys. "And if these clowns give you any more trouble, I am very hard to hurt; I can get people outside to safety."
  25. Excellent point! Casey still thinks this guy is full of it
