From the Diary of Nick Cimitiere April 4th, 2011 We've finally got renovations on the Parkhurst done. Rene, Crow, Arcturus and I managed to lay the wards that'll let us know when intruders get in. Changeling and Warlock put up the glamour that keeps the Parkhurst looking like it did before we moved in. The Astorias, Millie and Joe helped finish the reconstruction, and they know all the signals for setting off the wards. And the spell array's up and running, even if the conflicting energies are a bit hard to wrestle -- divine magic, necromancy, fae magic, mind magic, pretty much everything but infernalism. We've managed to keep it all stable and warded, but I'm gonna be doing some more research into keeping it all running without either muting the effects or causing the whole thing to overload. Now, if only we could find a way to get pizza delivered here... 30 EP (10 EP from Changeling, 5 EP from Nick Cimitiere, 5 EP from Crow, 5 EP from Dead Head, 5 EP from Rene de Saens) See also: Unreal Estate Size: Large (2 EP) Toughness: 10 (1 EP) Features: Combat Simulator, Communications, Concealed, Defense System (the Parkhurst Ghosts), Fire Prevention System, Infirmary, Garage, Laboratory, Library, Living Space, Personnel, Pool, Power (7), Power System, Security System (the Parkhurst Ghosts), Workshop (22 EP) Powers: Communication 10 (Mystic Communication) [Anywhere on Earth, Dimensional 2, Subtle] Emotion Control 10 [Area Burst, Limited to Calm] ESP 9 (Scrying Pool, including to other dimensions) [20,000 miles. Independent can only be applied to powers with a Sustained Duration. Also, what's this for? Because I was sure you'd said you were not going to make any more characters...

It must feed---you, if you are hungry [IC]
Dr Archeville replied to Dr Archeville's topic in Hanover
"Concerns are valid," the strange robot replied flatly, "though I do maintain that a way to remotely access at least some Lab systems would improve efficiency and functionality. I shall think on the matter more, and present a proposal once I have made sufficient calculations." No immediate dangers present themselves to the golden robot as it flew over, the loudest sounds its audio sensors detected was the joyous squealing of children, resuming whatever game they had been playing before the hybrid horror usurped their minds and bodies. In little time, it had reached the egg-shaped Lab. "I have reached The Lab," it announced to Dragonfly over their comm, "and Siren appears well; you may be able to see her now, as her flight path indicates she is flying towards Star Island. Proceeding to holding cells on sublevel -5 to check on Blue Wall and Electrolux." Protectron flew down and through the ground floor entrance, headed towards the Staff Elevator (which would take it down to the sublevels), but suddenly veered off and headed towards the kitchen. When Protectron approached the holding cells containing the two heroes, it held two small brown paper bags in hand, each with an assortment of fruits and nuts, and a bottle of sports drink. "Greetings, organic superheroes," it said flatly. "I am Protectron. Pending a verification of your well-being and lack of infection by the recent hybrid macroorganism that held most of the city in its sway, I shall release you. Please, tell me, how are you feeling?" -
"I believe a combination of your approach and Friend-Americana's approach," the strange robot said flatly, would work the best. Start with prostheses that approximate standard organic functioning, then add on extra abilities as requested. Modular systems that could be changed as needed would seem ideal, though an acceptable medium between ease of removal and coherence of systems would be a notable issue. This would appear to be a safer and more reliable method of granting metahuman-equivalent abilities to an organic being -- of improving all qualities of organic life. Though I should add that my research into granting metahuman abilities via other means, such as mutagenic chemicals or radiation, has not been very thorough, and it is my understanding that the results of such techniques have been very hard to predict and reliably replicate." "Alternative energy sources are a very worthy goal," it continued, in the same flat tone. "Do you work mostly with solar? Biofuels? Wind? Tidal? Geothermal?"

As Grim looked over the unconventional undead, she noticed he did look different. When she first met him, he looked more like roadkill, wet stains here and there, bits falling off (though rumors she's later heard made her wonder if the falling-off parts weren't an act on his part), and smelling to high heaven. But now, well, he was still clearly a hideous animate corpse, but he was more dried out, more mummy-like, and even smelled... well, not good, but less horrible, like he'd been stuffed with spice pouches. "Oh, no worries 'bout that," he said, smiling, "ever since all that mess in October, I's stopped leaking an' putrefyin'... well, okay, I don't do it as much." [bg=#0040FF]"Hey! Hey!"[/bg] He suddenly turned his head down to the ground next to him, "what? Whaddayawant now?" Grim neither saw nor heard anything, nor could her keen nose smell anything other than normal graveyard smells. [bg=#0040FF]"Who is she?"[/bg] "Aww, man!," he exclaimed, smacking his forehead. "Where are my manners?" He looked back up to Grim, and pointed to the spot on the ground, "Grim, this here's Mutt. Mutt, this here's Grim. She's good folks; you c'mon out an 'say hey to 'er." A great black form faded into view on the spot, a dark furred mastiff, nearly as big as Lynn herself! The smell of dog -- wet dog -- wafted off of it, and the eyes shown with an inner greenish light, but it seemed like a pleasant enough animal. "Hullo."

Archeville's eyes lit up when he saw the box of cookbooks. "Oh! Were those something passed down from your parents? Or from your own shopping? They, uh," he ran a finger over the lid, leaving a trail in the dust, "they do not seem to have been used in a while." He turned and gave her a wink; it was good for both of them that he approached cooking with the same enthusiasm and joy as chemistry and physics. He switched gears again, "ah, Sue, Sue Johanson. Lovely woman; started out as an RN. Opened one of the first birth control clinics in Canada, back in 1972, and later earned degrees in counseling and sex education." He floated to the center of the room and spun around slowly, giving the place a visual scan. "She had a popular radio show for many years, and that was later turned into a tv show, but a few years ago she went back to focusing on radio. She's written some books, does tours, even has her own line of sex toys. And she was appointed to the Order of Canada, one of that nation's highest honors, due to all her work work educating and informing the public about birth control and sexual health... which made a lot of right-wingers quite upset," he chuckled. He floated back down, eye-level with her, and reached out to brush one of her ears with his fingertips. "Oh, and the German for 'mind your own affairs' would be 'Kümmern Sie sich um Ihre eigenen Angelegenheiten.' Well, that is the formal phrase; a more informal one would be 'Kümmere dich um deine eigenen Angelegenheiten'. A more vulgar phrase would be..." he smirked and winked, "eh, I will tell you later."

The Bracing pf on Super-Strength converts your Str bonus to ranks in Sustained Immovability. But since Arc's Super-Str is itself an AP off his Enhanced Str -- something I'm kicking myself for missing when I did his approval, as that's not a good construction -- he can't use his Enhanced Str while using it, so his Str mod is only +4 (from Str 18 [base 10, +8 from being Large]), so he'll gain Sustained Immovability 4, which will improve his Knockback to -13 (-5 base form Toughness 11, -4 more for Large, -4 from the Bracing/Sustained Immovable). I've edited Arc's sheet to show his Str score when using his Super-Str, as well as his effective lifting Str. (Your numbers had been off b/c you were still counting the Enhanced Str with it.) The move you describe -- planting feet in ground (Bracing), setting to resist the charge, and using the beast's momentum to flip it over -- sounds like Readying an action to punch (and doing enough knockback to knock it prone) once it's hit you with its charge.

"An interest in science -- nay, in the future!" Archeville exclaimed, drawing more than a few looks from the crowd, "is all the reason one needs to come to The Lab! Or, for that matter, to ArcheTech!" "Ah, you have met the cheetah-man before?," the Doktor asked. "Was it in his capacity as a superhero, or 'between jobs'?" As Carrie talked more about clothing, an odd look came across Archeville's face. Partly scowl, partly... congratulatory? "Now, now, I think you are selling your skills far too short. I know the 'simply scaling up' can be trickier than it seems," he glanced over at the jewelry/regulators he had made for Mona, "and I have seen firsthand the quality of your work. I feel you could do similar work for more exotic body types, and do it well. And while you are correct in pointing out that the Albright Institute does make Morphic Molecule suits available to metahumans, those are all basic, utilitarian outfits. They can work with the Atoms to get something special whipped up, but I am sure they would appreciate more designers with which to work. You could make quite the career out of making outfits -- both heroic costumes and day-to-day wear -- for metahumans." He glanced over at Mona, and saw she was (or appeared to be) eying the appetizers section of her menu. "See anything good, liebchen?"

The strange golden robot had been silent and still since the arrival, a fact not noticed (due to concern over Blueshift) until now. One would easily think that it had become damaged during the teleportation. This, however, was not the case. The robot slowly panned around the area, scanning above and below as it panned left to right. It abruptly stopped when its field of vision passed over Blueshift and the others. The robot at last moved towards the heroes, and addressed Blueshift in its flat tone. "Apologies for not noticing your distress sooner. Are you doing better now?"

It must feed---you, if you are hungry [IC]
Dr Archeville replied to Dr Archeville's topic in Hanover
"Thank you," it said flatly, "I was not certain if Global Emergency Paramters were still in effect or if they had reverted, either automatically or due to an 'all-clear' signal from you. I shall first check on Siren, whom I deposited on the helipad, and then down to check on Electrolux and Blue Wall." "Apologies appreciated, but unnecessary," it replied, in the same flat tone. "Security protocols are understandable. However, I do hope that, as I continue to work with our Lab-Friends and with other organic beings, I am able to earn the privilege of being permitted freer access to The Lab." Protectron jetted back to The Lab, keeping an eye out below for anyone in need of assistance. -
It must feed---you, if you are hungry [IC]
Dr Archeville replied to Dr Archeville's topic in Hanover
"Acknowledged," it said flatly. "Will you be requiring my assistance in the Infirmary? If so, you will need increase my security clearance so that I may enter level 12. If not, I shall proceed to the kitchen to prepare post-conflict refreshments. Do you anticipate Friend-Americana regaining consciousness soon?" "Also, shall I release the detained heroes in The Lab's holding cells? If so, you will need to increase my security clearance so that I may enter sublevel -5." -

Reading now... Communication Link should be under Super-Senses, it's not a standalone power.

I think some no-namers (cultists of Baron Samedi or Malador who were planning to use that spot as a summoning circle, plant monsters from Green Man's lab, robots from the nearby Foundry workshop, etc.) might work best. I'll keep an eye on things, to make sure nothing too wonky happens.

Date: March 6th, 2011 (Sunday) ((Continued from The Conquering Mind)) While awaiting a reply from the heroine, the futuristic robot's strange mind began calculating the best meal options for her. This was a task it had done many times nine weeks it had been an inhabitant of The Lab. Fortunately for the Lab staff for whom it seemed so interested in providing proper nutrition, the snacks and meals it made did not taste that bad. This was partly explained by the presence of an olfactory sensory suite, as complex as any human's, discovered during one of Miss Americana's examinations of the robot. "If my help is not required," it added, "I shall return to The Lab and see to the heroes held in the nullifier chambers, and to Siren, whom I deposited on the helipad."

Think of the poor homeless robots! I'd still prefer that canon NPCs be run by Refs, so that there's some consistency in how they're portrayed.

Random ideas for what the home-building heroes may run into: * Green Man (if building on the outskirts of the city/near a forest) * Foundry or Labyrinth labs ("okay, dig here for the septic tank... wait, what's this heavy duty power conduit doing here?!") * Megalodon or Devil Ray or Trawler (if building near the ocean) * random supers battle that's spilled out into the area, or random villains running out of town after some nefarious activity

"College?," the affable undead said, face lighting up, "that's great t'hear! College is where I became the man I am t'day!" A beat later, he expressed a good knee-slapping laugh. "Me? Oh, same ol', same ol', fer the most part," he said with arms spread wide. "Been havin' ta re-learn a lotta ma old tricks since Papa Ghede vacated," he knocked on his forehead, "but Nick's been a real good sport 'bout helpin' me get mah mojo back." Grim's shift in tone as she described what brought her to him caused an equally intense shift in him, a flaring of the emerald light in his eyes from a pale glow to a burning torch. "Wish I had some answers fer ya, Grimlin'. I've chatted with ghosts from all walks, on both sides'a that conflict -- an' a host'a others besides -- an' I ain't ever heard a good answer fer it. But I do know one thing." The revenant unslung the shovel from his back, "beatin' on folks like that always feels good."

As soon as Protectron was within a mile of Star Island, it switched on its internal comms and contacted Dragonfly (and attempted to contact Miss Americana). "Sharl and I are on the way, ETA 31.68 seconds. Do you require assistance?" The reply received was Dragonfly's grumblings. "May I assume that your statements are indicative of a successful use of the nullifier against the 'Conquering Mind,' and that much of the danger is passed?," it said flatly. "If so, do either of you, or anyone else at your location, require medical attention?" It turned its head slightly to address Sharl, "I hypothesize that your ability to transmit across digital communications systems would allow you to 'piggyback' on my comms systems, and instantly teleport from here to the receivers at our Lab-Friends on Star Island. Do you wish to attempt it? If so, it may prove a useful tactic we could employ at latter times, especially if I can improve the range of my transmissions."
-
"Possibly," Protectron said flatly, already heading back to wards The Lab with the unconscious Siren in hand. "Scenario One, Friends-Americana and Dragonfly have successfully neutralized Grue/LV-13 Hybrid, and this unconsciousness is a precursor to true freedom from the hybrid entity's influence. Scenario Two, is that Friends-Americana and Dragonfly are in combat with the Grue/LV-13 Hybrid Entity now, and it is either 2a] losing the concentration needed to sustain its telepathic connection to the infected hosts due to their assaults, or 2b] focusing its attention on a few top-tier agents in its control in order to ward off their assault, or 2c] focusing its total mental energies on those two, in an attempt to pull them under its control." Reaching the Lab, it gently laid Siren down on the Lab's helipad, "in any case, now that this organic is safely down, I advise heading to the Star Island complex with all haste." The golden robot jetted off towards Star Island, though its speed was such that Sharl could easily leave it behind.

"Oh! Heya, Grimmy!," he said with a broad smile. "Ain't seen ya 'round in months! How ya been?" He glanced over at the speeding truck, "eh, graverobbers." He shook his head, "older fella was the pro, but I think this was the younger fella's first time out. I don't think the gal was in on it, she was jes' taggin' 'long wit her boyfriend," he said with a shrug. "But if'n our lil' show not only stops them from doin' stuff here, but stops 'em from doin' it ever again, well, it don't get much better'n that!" The revenant suddenly looked down at the ground beside him, "an' some help you were! What, were you chasin' after another raccoon again? Or was it a 'possum this time?" He looked back up to Grim, "so, whatcha need help with? Got a murder mystery what's bafflin' the cops?"

A soft whirring sound accompanied Protectron's optics refocusing. "In the two weeks I have been online, I have interfaced with Internet on a regular basis for observation and intelligence gathering. Thus, I do know of the recent Grue Invasion. However, I had not seen any mention directly connecting you with it. It pleases me to learn the other superheroes were able to free you from the Grue control and routed the shapeshifting aliens." Speaking of Dr. de Havilland, her request for a scan of Atlas caused another soft whirring to come from Protectron's optics. It looked at Gossamer, back to Atlas, then back to Gossamer. "I regret to inform you, Friend-de Havilland, the robot said flatly, "that the extent of my optical scanners function is to extend to the infrared and ultraviolet portions of the spectrum. My only other onboard sensors are audio receptors which can pick up infrasonic and ultrasonic frequencies, and the ability to pick up radio frequencies. However, if supplied with the equipment with which to generate an ultrasonic pulse, I believe can function as a medical ultrasonograph."
