Horrorshow While Davyd & Elizabeth had many differences, they did have one common bond: the stage. While she was more often on it performing and he was more comfortable behind it assisting others, both knew the importance of setting the right environment. And so as they worked to unload and set up for the next leg of the rally, they soon found themselves working with surprising ease and efficiency. "Guess we just had to find the right thing to work on, yeah?" Davyd actually found the most difficult part was in working with himself, within the "no powers" confines -- no superhuman strength, no stretching or adding of limbs, no shifting into a centaur form to provide more carrying space. Just a standard humanoid form. Once they were on the road again, though... "Oh, I'm sure we'll adapt to any challenges," he responded with a grin.

The Espadas School of Self Defence and Swordsmanship! 202 Fall (early November), a Saturday morning (probably after So Cruel and Beautiful) Davyd Palahniuk had graduated from the Claremont Academy a few months ago, but still wasn't quite sure what to do with himself. He'd had a few ideas, and one of them -- after overhearing Uncle Sasha gripe about "government spooks" -- had been worming its way through his mind for about a year. He'd tried doing his own research on it, but, due to the idea's nature, he could only get so far. But then he remembered someone who had (it was rumored) fist-hand knowledge with the idea, someone he'd met (briefly) last April. The idea gained traction. And so he had returned to The Espadas School of Self Defence and Swordsmanship!, dressed plainly and simply -- brown khaki pants and a long-sleeved gray tee -- and knocked on the front door. Should I have called ahead? I probably should have called ahead. Or maybe not calling ahead was the right move? The initiative, the element of surprise...

Horrorshow Davyd nodded to Muirne, vaguely recognizing the her as one of the students who'd arrived the same year he graduated. "Hey! Shadow... Shadowburn, yeah? How're things at Claremont?" He turned back to Lucy and shrugged, "well, yeah, people tend to remember the villains, especially in horror flicks. Though at least in his case," he nodded towards the poster of Max Schreck, "his monstrous nature was limited to his on-screen portrayal. In the remake, with Kinski..," he exhaled slowly as he trailed off. Then a sharp intake at Lucy's next comment, "oh, yes! Theda would've been great as Carmilla!" He smiled at the comment on his appearance, "thanks! I did it all myself!," he said, unable to quite hide a grin at his half-joke. "It took me some time to get this together. Tricky part was sticking with just the classic Universal Monsters. I had thought of doing my head up like The Fly's, or one arm be a big plant like from Little Shop of Horrors, but those aren't Universal. Ohh, Hammer's got a good stable of monsters, too! I may have to do that next year," he said, his mind already spinning out possible combinations. He nodded to the Bride of Frankenstein and to Ghost, then did a double-take. "Grim? Grimalkin, is that you! Hey!" His porcelain (well, bone) half-mask shifted and peeled back, and she was instantly able to recognize the Ukrainian-American metamorph (despite the Dracula fangs), "it's been a while, yeah? How've you been?"

ooc Bedlam in Bedlam: Let Him In (OOC)
Dr Archeville replied to Brown Dynamite's topic in Bedlam City

Artificer Heroditus nearly jumped out of his skin when Aquaria appeared, and had to focus on slowing his breathing before responding. "Theodora is... adjusting to her circumstances." His sister had been changed into a Deep One, and while Heroditus and others got to her before the transformation had completed, and managed to save her mind, her body had completely changed. "She has kept up with her studies, as have I. And you? You are... well?" Ancestors, give me strength. He turned aside in time to see a cat that was not quite a cat saunter by, a witch who seethed with Egyptian magics, and the Master (Mistress?) Mage herself. He bowed to her and recited a traditional Atlantean greeting given by a student to an honored master, ending with, "I am called Artificer, and am a student at Claremont's Academy." He looked again to the gathering mages, seeing energies coming off the man in the overstuffed armchair that reminded him faintly of Pan the Forever Boy, was relieved to see familiar faces in Veronica Danger and Masque, then stopped to admire the assorted implements of the staff-wielder who had just approached. "Oh, those are exquisite! Did you make them yourself?"

Horrorshow "Oh, sure, no problem, yeah?" Davyd replied from the bottom bunks. "Better I'm down here, in case I start, uh, dripping in my sleep." He had reminded them all that he reverted back to his 'default' form when unconscious, so they wouldn't be too freaked out if they saw he'd turned into a vaguely humanoid mass of muddy, protoplasmic flesh. Davyd's family had been reluctant to see him go so far from home without them, but they knew he had powers, and knew the friends he'd be traveling with also had abilities, and this put their minds at ease. A bit. His father made the most fuss, but since there was a chance the teens would be going near Kiev, where his own parents were, he could hardly deny his son the chance to see them. Uncle Sasha was very excited for his nephew's trip, regaling the youth with tales of his own teen adventures in Europe (which drew many embarrassed looks from his brother, and irritated looks from his sister-in-law), and he slipped Davyd a few hundred Euros just before they left Freedom. Davyd's grandmother rained kisses down upon him, while her daughter, Davyd's mother, tried to be more stoic and practical, and had given all of his traveling companions a mildly threatening look, as if to warn them not to let anything happen to her son. He wore what appeared to be a simple outfit, soft brown leather boots, brown khaki cargo pants, and a forest green tee shirt. He'd brought a few other changes of clothing, as insisted on by his family, though his abilities meant he didn't need to worry about such things. Best not to argue, put their minds at ease. He grinned and waved off Micah's apology, "heh, no worries, yeah? Though I think I'll come with you, stretch my legs a bit, see what all is here." He rose and prepared to follow his bunkmate.

So Artificer can see magical energies -- he's got Visual Magic Awareness, and his Goggles add Analytical to all his Visual senses. Does he see anything unusual in the sandstorm, or the cave?

Artificer Heroditus had been interested in seeing more and different parts of the Surface world. And he could certainly appreciate the need for survival training. One never knew what sort of environment they might find themselves in, and some things could not be read about, they had to be experienced. But not like this. Not like this. He had barely said a word once they'd gotten off the plane. In minutes his exposed skin was lobster-red, though the alchemical sunscreen he'd made before the trip did seem to help. He'd tried to endure the withering heat with stoic dignity, as any Atlantean facing such hardships should, but it was clear he was suffering greatly. Why would anyone choose to come here? He had kept his goggles on tight once they'd gotten in the jeep, in an effort to prevent his eyeballs from completely desiccating, so he had a bit of protection from the sudden sandstorm. He took Paper's offered mask and slapped it on, and marched as steadily as he could towards the cave.

Artificer Heroditus would not refer to himself as a "mage," not in the conventional sense. But since Atlantean "technology" -- which he was quite skilled with -- was a weird hodgepodge of Earthly scientific principles, Atlantean magic, and weirder things, he certainly knew more about magic than most. Plus, he had the ability to see magical energies, and he had been seeing some very disturbing things of late. Nothing major, no gaping holes in reality or shredded ley lines, more like things just on the periphery of his vision, but he had a feeling those things would be getting bigger and more noticeable. And so, the Claremont Senior had snuck off-campus to attend the gathering. His magic vision made for a visual thrill in Parkhurst, and it took him a moment to adjust before he started looking for familiar faces. He recognized a few attendees, by reputation if not from personal meetings, but most were unknown to him. "I wonder if any other Atlanteans will be here," he murmured to himself.

Horrorshow "To Theda!," a voice behind Lucy repeated. She knew there would be all sorts of tonight's show, and Lucy had certainly seen a lot in her time. But when she saw who had just spoken, it may still have been a surprise. The figure's torso was gaunt, wrapped loosely in yellowed linen bandages. Its left leg was lean, covered in green scales, and ended in a webbed, clawed foot, while the right leg was powerfully muscles, covered in fur, and in a digitigrade configuration, ending in a clawed foot. The left arm looked to be completely skeletal, though she soon realized the flesh & muscle of that arm were transparent, while the right arm and hand appeared to be made from a hodgepodge of human parts, sewn together in a manner emphasizing form over function. The head was relatively normal, the eyes and nose covered by a white porcelain mask, covering skin that was almost as pale, leaving his slicked-back widow's peak hair and fanged mouth with blood dribbling from the corners visible. "She may not have exactly been a horror icon," he continued, "but she was a great Vamp!" He extended the Frankenstein hand to her, "have we met before? I could swear I've seen you somewhere before. I'm Horrorshow, though tonight I'm... The Universal Horrorshow!"

Artificer Heroditus paled upon realizing his faux pas with Bernadette, "oh, sports! Yes, those... those are things you Surfacers do. I mean, ah," color quickly rushed back to his cheeks, "we have sports, too, down in Atlantis. Many gladiatorial competitions!," he added, pumping his arms a bit. "Not really my thing, though. Maybe designing an arena or court, that would be more in my area." He gave his new roommate a quizzical look, curious about what sort of training would elicit such a reaction, but Ryder's energetic reply set him to a new train of thought. "Ah, we do have something similar! Well, we did, before The Sinking. A bit hard to do that now, though various attempts have been made with various adhesives and sealants mixed in with the dyes. The results were," he shuddered a bit, remembering the youths who had required skin grafts after using a too-strong batch, "unpleasant. Ah, but," a smile crept across his face, "but perhaps that is something you and I could work on?!" His heart fell a bit at Utsawa's response, though he was gladdened on seeing his willingness to help nonetheless. "Ah, then we can learn together! Wonderful! Oh, this will be a productive year," he looked to all assembled, "for all of us!"

Artificer The Atlantean scratched his head at Bernadette's reply, "La Cross? You had a religion coach? Oh!," he clasped his hands together suddenly, "you were part of a religious institution before coming here! Training to become a member of the clergy, yes? Serving the multitudes, tending to their spiritual well-being," he held his hands out to her/them and smiled, "a most noble calling!" "Oh, I am certain you can help," he replied to Utsawa, "or, at the very least, lead me to ones who might." He approached the Japanese teen, "over the summer I had a chance to speak with a master of Atlantean tattoo magic," he gestured to Utsawa's sleeves of art, "and had the idea to compare and contrast what I learned there with similar Surfacer techniques. And since you're the only one I know who has such mystical markings," he shrugged, "that seemed the best place to start."

Artificer He smiled as Cyan toyed with the battery, and continued offering one in an outstretched hand to Black. "So, you are as committed to your aesthetic as Ryder is?," he asked Charlie, glancing back and forth between the two boys. "I can certainly appreciate that - even with so much Surfacer influence on my works, their design remains unquestionably Atlantean!" Heroditus reflexively nodded back at Utsawa, then smiled broadly at him when it fully hit him who it was that had entered. "Ah, Utsawa! I was going to look for you later! I came up with a few ideas over the summer that may benefit from your input." His focus drifted slightly back to the RoBugs and the R.V.D., "that is, once we all get settled in, of course." He was focused on the R.V.D. again, paying special attention to its head and optics, then suddenly turned his head to face the Bernadettes. "Say, do you -- ah, apologies, Cyan! -- ah, do you have a mentor figure? These two," he gestured with his free hand to Charlie and Utsawa, "have had various mentors and trainers, even before coming here. Do you have anyone to help you, outside of Claremont?"

Artificer Heroditus noticed the cat, or rather the magical effect that appeared to be a cat. To his eyes, the magical energies making up the remote sensor were clear as day. Ah, right, I'd heard there are some cat-people among the new students this year. I suppose this is from one of them? He smiled and waved at it just as it darted off. He stroked the faint stubble on hearing the brief exchange between Bernadette and Ryder. "Yes, many tests are offered here, of both the mind and body. I am certain you can learn all manner of things about your abilities -- perhaps even some aspects which you had not even imagined before!" He clasped his hands in front of him when Ryder mentioned duplicating objects, "oh, that would be a trick! I- whoops!," his glanced up, "apologies, Cyan, I hope I did not disturb you up there!" He reached into one of the pouches on his bandolier and drew forth a tiny lithium coin battery, and offered it to the robug perched upon his head, "here, a small treat for you!" He held one in his other hand, and offered it to Black. He tilted his head slightly at Ryder's conversation with the robugs regarding the cat. They cannot see it? So what does that say about the spirits animating them? If they-- His train of thought was interrupted at the sudden appearance of Charlie's RVD. His eyes went wide, first in brief terror, then in admiration. "That is an impressive koronis! But," he glanced back at Charlie, then back to the drone, "you are controlling it directly, yes? With that?," he gestured to Charlie's watch.

Artificer Heroditus took a step back at Bernadette's display, and made several sounds not unlike those of a dolphin. "Amazing!" He suddenly found himself remembering tales of the Hekatónkheires, hundred-handed giants of immense strength. "Does your enhanced might persist through all your copies? Or does it change depending on the number of duplicates you have generated?" A familiar voice drew his attention, and he turned to greet the new arrival with open arms. "Ah, greetings, friend Ryder! How was your summer? And, ah," a look of mild disappointment flashed briefly across his face as he looked over Ryder's shoulders, "where are your little entomosautomatons?" He filed away what his new roommate said about a utility belt, merely nodding at his words. This year was looking to be very promising!

Artificer Heroditus blushed a bit at Bernadette's words, "well, I think being able to replicate yourself is a very impressive ability!" He cleared his throat a bit, "was that an ability your were born with, or something you sought out? If, ah, if it is not too forward of me to ask, that is." He was aware such topics could be sensitive, for both Surfacers and Atlanteans. He leaned slightly towards Charlie, "oh, I would be very interested in seeing your gadgets! Perhaps we can learn from one another!" He could sense the young detective's curiosity, and took that as a positive sign. "One area you Surfacers are far better at than Atlanteans is the field of miniaturization, like in the 'utility belts' some of your heroes wear. I have been trying to find ways to scale down the size of several devices, so I can carry more of them at once. Is that an area in which you are familiar?"

Artificer He smiled at Bernadette, though this time kept it tight, showing no teeth, "thank you. And, ah, yes, Atlantis has been," he paused again, thinking of a properly diplomatic word, "isolated for the past several centuries. It was only about 80 years ago that we started having more... open relations with America and other Surfacer nations. There are many who still believe we should keep to ourselves, remain isolated, but some of us see the value in sharing and trading. Why, I have learned more in two years at Claremont than I could have imagined in a lifetime back home!" "And that... flows neatly to your question," he made another click-pop sound as he turned to Charlie. "I am a mechano-mystic, or techno-mage. In Atlantis, we combine magic and technology in ways that Surfacers do not, and I have been attempting to figure out how our systems and your can interact. Which has been quite challenging at times!"

Artificer "Oh, I don't find it rude at all!," he replied to Bernadette with a smile, showing off pearl-white teeth. "I am Atlantean, which means that living up here has been a..." he paused a moment, seeking a properly diplomatic word, "a challenge for me. The temperature is always too hot, the lights always too bright. And, of course, all this," he gestured around vaguely, "dry, uncompressed air. So I made something that would let me feel more at home, at least while I slept. As I said, my first one was rather bulky and crude, but as my skills have increased, I've managed to make several refinements. My hope is that, some day, something like them will be used in the Atlantean Embassy, to let our diplomats and envoys feel less homesick." He turned to Charlie and tilted his head, "my... deal? I'm sorry, I am not quite sure what you mean. Are you asking about my abilities? Skills? About what I can do?" Heroditus knew little of his new roommate, so he still wasn't sure how they would relate, but this seemed like a decent way to start. "I'm happy to tell, if you'll share your 'deal'."

Artificer Heroditus smiled and made a click-pop sound, the equivalent of a brief chuckle, "yes, I suppose I should take what small rests I can." He took a quick look up and down the hallways, "things do seem to he slowed a bit." Ah, so this is who will be replacing Benny, he thought. Well, no, not replace, per se, but... oh, get out of your own head, Hero. He extended a hand to Bernadette, then to Charlie. "Ah, yes, while I still know little of Surfacer sports," he tried addressing all three simultaneously, "my understanding is that various team and squad activities here at Claremont focus on cooperative skills, rather than competitive play. Focus on responsible uses of one's abilities, both solo and as part of a team. And with a remarkable success rate, too!" He turned slightly to focus more on Charlie, "oh, you didn't have any trouble getting around my sleeping tank, did you? The one my former roommate had to deal with was much bulkier, but I think I have managed to slim down the design by a considerable amount." He was referring, of course, to the pressurized, water-filed tube that served as the Atlantean's bed, which was not much bigger than a single dorm bed.

Kord Dormitories, Second Floor Claremont Academy, Freedom City, New Jersey Saturday, September 4, 2021 Like the rest of the dormitories at Claremont Academy, the first floor of the Rita Kord Dormitory was a scene of somewhat controlled chaos. Classes were set to start early next week after Labor Day, so the dorms had opened up this weekend for new and returning students to get moved in. Trying -- with some small amount of success -- to control this chaos was one of the floor's Senior residents, whose towering 6 foot 4 inch height made it easy for him to oversee most everything around him. "Two lines, please, one in, one out... no, no, stay to the right side of the ha- no, your right... Ho! Lift with your knees, not your back! Wait there a moment, I'll- oh, yes, sir, that's right down there, next to last on the left..." Try as he might, there was only so much Heroditus could do to control the Surfacers, but he had grown more accustomed to and accepting of their ways in the past few years.
