  1. Archeville hrmed and nodded as he listened to the two, and jotted notes down on a clipboard. "Sounds like he is doing alright as far as his coordination und motor skills go," he aid as he peered into Jack Jr's ears, "but you say he is not talking at all yet? Not even attempts at it?" The Doktor put aside his scope and picked up a wooden tongue depressor. With his free hand he placed a finger on the baby's chin, "alright, little Jack, I need to take a look at your gums und teeth now, und at your throat. You are not going to bite me now, are you?"
  2. "Danke," he said as he took the offered roast beast, "oh, do be sure to get some of de cheek -- dat is de most succulent part! As for finding de vines used, vell, I do keep a very vell-stocked vine und beer cellar in mein home at Hanover. Helps to make de place feel more like home. It also makes me qvite popular at de local block parties!" As Mona went on about her thoughts on Germany, Archeville's grin spread, and his eyes got that twinkle again. When she ended with her observation on France, though, he actually let out a knee-slapping laugh, nearly choking in doing so! "Too right!," he howled before taking a few gulps of beer. "Dis may sound odd coming from a German, but I haff never understood de bizarre reputation of de French 'surrendering mitout putting up a fight'. De French Resistance alone, not to mention Layfayette, de Gaulle, Leclerc..." "In fact, de Norman-Saxon conflicts can be seen even on de dinner table! Look... ahh... ah, here!" He looked around the table for a moment, and brought over a bowl of chicken and dumplings. "Now, see how de dumplings here are small, flat, und slightly chewy? Dat is common in mein homeland, as vell as southern England -- both settled by de Saxons -- und vhich carried over to de South of de United States. Compare dem to de dumplings you vould find in Northern cities und states -- such as Freedom City -- und you vould find dem to be big und fluffy und light, like de vons from de northern parts of England, und northern France... vhich de Normans conquered."
  3. Probably for the same reason Sailor Moon and Voltron don't start each battle with their most powerful attack (In-game, it takes time to build up energy; out of game, it makes the drama last longer.) Arrays of Alternate Forms have proven to be unwieldy at best, for both the player and the GM overseeing the adventure. And the Limited (only when X happens) flaw isn't granular enough for most applications of what you'd want.
  4. Dok's Know (Tech) is currently +21 -- 14r, +7 Int, no Enhanced Int from Tentacle-Brain or Enhanced Skills from Gadget. He's got Skill Mastery so he can take 10 and get a 31. But Taking 10 is for people without HPs! Knowledge (Technology) roll (1d20+21=40) Can't do much better than that, so I'll keep it.
  5. 16 April 2010 Following Captain Knievel and Malice's break-in of the Hanover ArcheTech facility, and of the "Dracula" incident at the same locale while helping Jack & Taylor deliver their child, it has become clear I must redouble the security at my facilities. While I am at it, I may as well improve the communications and sensor systems for the facilities. And while I am doing that, I may as well look at overhauling certain aspects of the special ArcheTech facilities (ArcheStern, Fjölnirskraft, and Schloss Wissenschaft), and my own home in Hanover. On a more personal note, I also have some ideas for improving my own gear, as several flaws became apparent during the recent battles. I will address those later. I had used the Darts, Inc. systems as a base for the ArcheTech ones, since doing so was quicker and easier than starting from scratch. I thought I had erased any backdoors which Eric Micheals could have used to hack back in, but I clearly mistaken. So I am writing an all-new security routine, with fractal-encrypted protocols. Scanners will now verify both the security badge that all employees and guests must wear as well as the person wearing it, to insure that a person is not wearing someone elses badge, made possible in part by improved facial recognition software and galvanic skin response meters unobtrusively concealed in all doorknobs (which is not a method of identifying someone, as a fingerprint or retinal scan would be, but can detect other variances in a person's bioelectric field, which may be enough to detect an otherwise undetectable shapeshifter, or a cyborg, extraterrestrial, or certain types of metahumans). Ultra-security areas require at least two passwords, and the passwords themselves are encrypted. The first password is routine enough, and causes a short personalized greeting to appear, which includes the time down to the hundredths of a second. The second password for a given area consists of a series of alphanumeric characters (chosen by the account owner) ending in a three-digit sequence. The hundredths of a second included in the initial greeting must be added to that final three-digit sequence of the second password, and any invalid entry is assumed to be an intrusion and the system locks down. Thus, even if a password is left laying around, it will do a would-be hacker no good unless they also know about the additional time factor. Projects deemed sensitive enough to require further security will require more and more complex passwords. Communications between facilities will now be conducted via an uplink with a dedicated satellite (I may need to add more as ArcheTech grows), as well as the systems at ArcheStern. I am also going to add force screens to the ArcheTech facilities, as well as to my own home in Hanover, Schloss Wissenschaft, Fjölnirskraft, and ArcheStern. The first three get attacked a lot, and my super-sub and space station can certainly benefit from the increased protection. I am also going to add a new type of repair drone to all facilities, similar to the ones I worked on for Scarab's Lair. My Hanover Home, Archestern, and Fjolnirskraft are all also benefiting from a new type of repair drone, similar to the ones I worked on for Scarab's Lair. Now, my own, personal gear. I have plans for further improvements to my Gravimetric Belt, and the assortment of items kept in my "Utility Labcoat." I will add deflective properties to the Belt's primary force field, so it can turn away some blows as well as absorb their energy to protect me from harm. This will free my mind for other combat applications, such as calculating the angles and vectors needed to get off a precise shot. A drawback is that some of the parts needed for this deflective function will need to be cannibalized from the flight and teleportation systems; I calculate that after I am done, the Belt can only reach a top speed of 4,000 mph, and teleport me a maximum of two hundred miles (which is still more than enough for my day-to-day activities). My "Utility Labcoat" will receive a bigger overhaul, for just about every component in it. Improved chemical reactions can increase the efficacy of the assorted explosives, and streamlined cases combined with raised braille-like labels (and some training from Colt) will make it easier for me to draw them when needed. I also have ideas on an assortment of collapsible weapons, similar to that bat Erin White carries around. 30 April 2010 Two weeks to finish it all. Not bad. Unfortunately, I was not able to find the power or space requirements for the force screens for ArcheStern or Schloss Wissenschaft, but I am sure I can eventually. The composite construction of Schloss Wissenschaft has thus far proved too confusing for the repair drones, so they are not present at that location. Also, I decided not to include them at the regular ArcheTech facilities yet, due to some 'bugs' that are still being worked out. (If they are to run rampant, I would rather it be at my home, which I can quickly lock down, or at my most remote locations, Archestern and Fjolnirskraft, to minimize their impact.) The improvements to my Belt's primary force field required more components than I anticipated; the impact countering function has been removed, though it is not as if I ever used that function much anyway. On a more positive note, as I worked on improving the Primary Force Field I hit upon some ideas to improve the Cloaking Field (improved stealth capabilities), Interphase Field (better cohesion of form, reducing damage from any attacks that can affect me), and the Shrinking Field (improved molecular cohesion, for better protection). Attempts to crate an Interphase Cloaking Field, rendering my intangible and invisible/undetectable, thus far remain unsuccessful. (See here for game stats of upgrades)
  6. Correct. And since Wealth is entirely optional anyway, I felt all we needed was our own House Rules on it.
  7. Only if those stories were their origin stories. And maybe not even then. I.e., just b/c a char was approved in August, and first started in IC threads here in August, doesn't mean they couldn't have been active before August. Look at the Justice League or Avengers or X-Men: the first ish of their comics -- their first "IC thread" -- wasn't their origin, they were all active as heroes before those took place. Or, look at most of the Ref's chars -- active for years before their 'debut' here, having had adventures before their first IC thread.
  8. I think you need to reduce your Gravity Control, like Avenger said. It's an area effect that provokes a save, it's limited to PL, so you cannot have it at more than rank 10.
  9. FC:PbP is offering the community another "vignette" opportunity. If you'd like to read about our previous vignettes, check here. For the third time, the Grue have invaded Freedom City. They have attacked the very infrastructure of the city and seeded their agents into every organization. They stir up unrest and chaos where ever they go, before they step out as enemies proper. Will the third time be the charm for the insidious alien invaders?! Not if our heroes have anything to say about it! And that's precisely what this Vignette is about! This Vignette is all about how your hero stepped up to the plate and helped kick the alien invaders right back into space. Now you might be wondering: What exactly is going on in the Invasion? Grue sleeper agents are keeping the heroes occupied and spreading them thin combating various threats throughout the city. They're also slowing the evacuation process anyway they can. Atlas is a Grue/human hybrid is being controlled by the fiendish Grue Meta-Mind to attack his former friends and allies. But this is all a diversion from the Grue's true sinister plot: the destruction of the entire Earth! Amidst all this chaos the Grue Armada descends from the deep regions of space and begins laying siege to the city, unleashing their super-weapon: the aptly named Planet Cracker. The heroes have to stop the weapon in time to save the Earth, but also keep the Grue forces in check to ensure that there is a city left to save, and they have to free Atlas from the sinister alien control. It is highly recommended that there's a collaborative effort from the players to create a cohesive story, and gives everyone time to shine. Who: Any player who is interested, for one or both of their characters. What: Write a one (1) page (single spaced) vignette featuring your character giving those alien invaders a good what for, saving civilians and generally doing things reserved for the season finale. When: The deadline for submissions will be Thursday, September 30th by 11:59 PM EST (GMT -5). The vignettes themselves will take place in late May of 2010. Where: Anywhere. When you submit your vignette, please make a note clearly indicating in which forum it should be posted, as well as when it would be happening. Why: To enhance our community, to flex your writing muscles, to think more deeply about your character, and to earn a bonus PP for your character for the month of September. How: Once your story is finished and proofed, PM it to one of the Refs (angrydurf, AvengerAssembled, Ecalsneerg, Geez3r, ShaenTheBrain, or myself). When all the stories are in, one of our staff members will post them to the appropriate forums (which is why we need you to be sure to tell us where it should go!), and provide links to them in this thread. DO NOT post them in a forum yourself, otherwise it will not be counted for this exercise. Post here with questions.
  10. Breakdown? Fleur? Hellion? JoAB?
  11. Ah! Yeah, that is. Also, gimme an initiative roll for Colt.
  12. Archeville was chuckling, "ja, most people find dat dings in mein native tongue sound much more intimidating dan dey really are. Dose two vars may haff had someding to do mit it. But," he continued, without missing a beat, "I like to dink dat, given all de musicians und philosophers und scientists dat mein homeland has produced, it also sounds rich und historical und hearkens back to a... a more enlightened time." "Plus, mit de, as you said, 'theme-park' name, it puts de locals in a more receptive mood. Vhen I first started remodeling de place, I had initially intended for it to be a home for meinself, nutzing more. But mein family has... a reputation in dese parts, so I hit upon de idea of opening it to de public, und helping to educate dose who came here. Having if also act as a branch of ArcheTech vas also a natural progression." An odd mix of emotions raced across Archeville's face when Mona mentioned meeting her mother. Too fast for most to see, but Mona was not like most. "I... am not sure vhich vine de chefs used, but I can check. A local vintage, I am sure." He turned slightly and made a sweeping gesture towards the table, "care for seconds? Dere is plenty left, dough be sure to save room for dessert!"
  13. Archeville tapped his chin with one end of the Screwdriver, stopping when he realized the roller coaster effect it was having on the holoprojections of Fusion's medical records. "Dis facility does haff several pools, und chambers dat can be filled mit vater, for aquatic aerobic therapy as vell as for de care und habitation of sealife or metahumans who require aquatic environs. If you vould prefer dis interview be conducted in such an environ, I vould be more dan villing to accommodate you. Dat is de purpose behind ArcheTech -- to make ozhers feel accepted und understood, und to help dem accept und understand demselves."
  14. "Oh, ja, de first few tests vere quite difficult," Archeville said as he gently tweaked the baby's toes, then began tickling his feet. "You gave us all qvite a scare de first time you disappeared, ja, you did!" The Doktor made several quick measurements of the baby, height and length and weight, and several more on his head. He checked his hearing and ability to visually track objects, and checked to see if he would grab for things placed near him. "Haff either of you seen him attempt to roll over, or sit up?" he asked, though he continued to keep his eyes on his tiny patient and kept a happy smile on his face.
  15. Are we still doing round-by-round turns? If so, I believe it's Gossamer's turn.
  16. The building doesn't have a fire escape per se, just the three sets of stairs at the back. Like the one Grim is on. You only need to make a check/use Acrobatics if you want to climb those steps in an especially smooth manner ;)
  17. He did also scan Malice's armor, though.
  18. "No, de robot gorilla is in mein house in Hanover," Archeville replied nonchalantly. "Betveen dere, here, und de ArcheTech facilities across de globe, und assorted ozher duties, I haff little time to meinself. But vhat time I do get, I prefer to spend on ArcheStern or Fjölnirskraft -- I find de cool metal corridors und de hum of mein machinery... soothing." "Dough I try not to let such remote places affect mein vision. Now, as for dis place," he continued between small bites, "Schloss Wissenschaft -- 'Science Castle' -- is highly automated, mit a permanent staff of only 50 people, und approximately 300 robots. I could streamline operations more -- less humans und less robots, via more automation -- but I chose not to, because people coming here expect to see robots, und appreciate seeing ozher people. Und in case you are vondering," he added, grinning, "de people you saw earlier, setting de table, vere all real people, not androids." "I am glad you haff taken to de hasenpfeffer," he said, smiling warmly. "It is von of mein favorite dishes, dough von I do not haff often. De secret to making a good batch is twofold: cooking low und slow, und de marinade -- de right vine und spices, as vell as a bit of de hare's own blood." The Doktor's eyes went wide for half a moment, then bit his lip, then settle back into a relaxed smirk. "Alcohol, pork, und blood -- three strikes against halal laws. Ja, I am going to be really popular mit your mozher...."
  19. "I shall do my best," Archeville replied after a moment's pause, "though you must know dat dere are hardly ever assurances dat are von hundred percent certain." He withdrew a slender wand-like device from his pocket -- his Electromagnetic Screwdriver -- and flicked it on, causing a 3D holographic display of Fusion's medical records (which she'd sent over some days earlier) to appear between them. "Bodyvide mutations are tricky dings, und yours exponentially more complex due to de fact it involved compounds derived from a number of different species, from an entirely separate phylum." "Animal-Human splices haff been done for decades," the Doktor continued, and a smaller window showing a number of animal-human hybrids appeared next to Fusion's records. Many of the ones she recognized from reports on the Circuit Maximus super-fighters, or a few of the weirder Iron Age villains. "Un de closer de animal is to human, de easier und more stable de process is. Many traits from other mammals can be spliced to humans, mit a fair degree of stability, as dey are all in de same Class. Cephalopods like octopi, dough... vell, as I said, dey are in an entirely different Phylum. Dere is less in common, so more vork is required to haff all de components vork togezher in a stable matrix." "Haff you felt any different recently? Noticed any changes in de vay your body reacts? Any odd cravings, either for foods or environmental conditions?"
  20. Lucky for you Bluff can be resisted by Sense Motive or Bluff ;)
  21. "" the young woman repeated. "" Yeah she was full-on star-struck. For the moment, though, she remained alone, as the party continued on in the apartment with no one else leaving for the stairwell. "" the first one blatantly lied. Well, blatant to Grimalkin, anyway. " "" the second added, still caressing Chica!Grim's ankle... and calf... and reaching for her thigh, "
  22. "Nutzing out of de ordinary," he replied to Erin's query. "Second doses of de Diphtheria/Tetanus/Pertussis, Haemophilus influenzae type b, Pneumococcal PCV13, Rotavirus, und Polio immunizations. In two more months, I vill administer de third dose, as vell as his first flu shot, if Jack und Taylor decide dey vant it." As he talked, he began puling items from his black bag. Pen flashlight, measuring tape, a reflex hammer, a clipboard with numerous charts and notes on it, and an assortment of other small items. Then he pulled out the scale, and it was clear the bag was bigger on the inside than the outer dimensions implied. The last item he retied was a small black case, which he opened to reveal several small glass vials filled with clear liquid and an odd, slender device. By then, Avenger had appeared. "Ah, Jack, good to see you again. Your pride und joy seems fine so far, dough I haff yet to truly begin my examinations in earnest. I vas just discussing mit Erin here your son's general behavior und activity; haff you noted anything odd or disconcerting?"
  23. "Ain't been able t'find out," the Revoltin' Revenant replied with a worried look, "which either means somthin' reeeal subtle, or reeeal pow'rful an' intimidatin'. Neither'a which make me feel any better 'bout it. Best I can find is that there's someone -- or a bunch'a someones -- messin' with the doorways 'tween this side an' th'Other. But it ain't t'bring someone back... least, it don't feel like that's what's goin' on. More like... like they's jes' tryin' t'wedge the door open, but I dunno why." The zombie glanced back at Kid Cthulhu, and could not help but recall the line "even death may die." Kid, fer yer sake, I hope y'ain't messed up in any'a this. "'Course, even jes' leavin' th'doorways open is trouble 'nough, all sorts'a spirits eager t'cross over. But if it is jes' t'cause chaos, is that th'ultimate goal? Or is that a distraction fer somethin' even bigger?"
  24. That's too short to count as a post, Rav.
