  1. "Ooh, is this our new squadmate?!" A pale redheaded girl had just entered, accompanied by a plain-looking brown haired boy who walked a few steps behind her. He was a few inches taller than her, but he hunched a bit, making them appear about equal in height. The girl, wearing pink furry boots, denim jeans, and a denim jacket over a pink shirt, strode forward. "Well, hey there, Mia! And Leroy, you ol' so-and-so! Oh," she looked around, "but where's Abby? Oh," she waved a hand, "Ah'm sure she'll show sooner or later, all mysterious-like." She offered -- thrust -- a hand towards Eira, "hey there! Ah'm Lousie Beaumont, but all mah friends call me Lulu!"
  2. Reputation: Horrorshow Gather Information DC 5: There's a new metahuman active in Freedom City, Jumpscare. He's really freaky and scary! DC 10: Not Jumpscare, Horrorshow. He's a shapeshifter, able to assume a variety of animal and monstrous forms. But he's not a villain, he's been spotted opposing criminals. DC 15: Horroshow can also imitate the appearance of others, and stretch and distort his body. He cannot assume energy or gaseous forms, or shapes involving moving parts (like machinery). DC 20: Causing Horrorshow to involuntarily change form causes him pain. Horrorshow's first appearance was April 2019, during Fear Master's attack on FCU. DC 25 (or 20 if can access his medical records at ASTRO Labs or ArcheTech) : Horrorshow is Davyd Palahniuk. He gained his abilities when exposed to experimental formulae in an FCU biology lab. DC 30 (or 25 if can access his medical records at ASTRO Labs or ArcheTech) : One (or more) of the formulae Davyd was exposed to contained Grue biomaterials. How FCU labs acquired them is still under investigation. Reputation: Davyd Palahniuk Gather Information DC 5: Davyd lives in an apartment in Riverside, with his family. He's Ukrainian, and was a student at FDR High School. Davyd's parents and grandmother were born in Ukraine, but Davyd was born in the US, in Freedom City. DC 10: His father's a musician, his mother's an auto mechanic. Davyd recently transferred to another school. DC 15: Davyd's uncle, Sasha, does lots of odd jobs for the Ukrainian immigrant communities in and around Freedom City. His grandmother had worked as a cleaning lady, and still does so from time to time, but not nearly as much as she used to. Davyd transferred to the Claremont Academy. DC 20 (15 is can access FCPD records) : Davyd's uncle Sasha is a low-ranking member of the Mafiya, suspected in a number of illegal activities though nothing proven. His family does not appear to be aware of his criminal ties, though that may be a front.
  3. Artificer Identity: Public, though largely unknown Alternate Identity: Heroditus Fabricus Stylianos Birthplace: Atlantis Legal Status: Atlantean citizen (minor) with no criminal record Base of Operations: Claremont Academy Residence: Claremont Academy Dorms Occupation: High School Student (Sophomore as of 2019/2020) Affiliations: Atlantis, Claremont Academy Family: Xyles (father), Yrdoste (mother), Theodora (twin sister); Baelrath (distant cousin, deceased), Barbara (aunt); Aueivokans, Epatoeuns, Kinoibios, Teptavopos, and Yttapchos (renowned ancestors) Age: 16 (Date of Birth: September 1st, 2003) Gender: Male Species: Human Offshoot (Atlantean) Height: 6 ft 4 in. (1.93m) Weight: 210 lbs. (95kg) Skin: Olive Hair: Black (very dark green) Eyes: Sea Green APPEARANCE Tall, sleek, and reasonably attractive, with a long Aquiline nose, sharp cheekbones, and strong jawline topped by sea green eyes. He keeps his hair -- a shade of green so dark is appears black -- long (sometimes up in a ponytail or man bun, sometimes loose), and is trying to grow in a beard; he is certain it shall be magnificent. His preferred outfit is dark blue short breeches that end just at the knee & a dark green short-sleeved tunic, cinched together by a brown belt and bandolier which are covered in pockets o5 various sizes. He is also often seen with a pair of goggles -- left lens purple, right lens green -- set on his forehead when not in use. He’s still getting used to wearing shoes, but currently favors gladiator-style sandals that lace up to his mid-calf. HISTORY Thousands of years ago, the island continent of Atlantis was home to a civilization of Preserver-enhanced humans, advanced far beyond anything else on Earth. Atlantean “technology” was a strange combination of scientific principles, the alien science and technology of the Preservers, and their understanding and use of magic, including ley-line energies, enchanted crystals, and tapping into various elemental forces. Much was destroyed or lost during the Sinking, as was the knowledge to make and maintain it (hindered by the fact it was all hand-crafted, never mass-produced), but several scraps remained. The Stylianos clan has long worked to recover and restore these lost artifacts, which has given them some sway in Atlantean culture; while none are part of the nobility, many serve as favored artisans or in the military. Heroditus and his twin sister Theodora are the latest in this long line of techno-mages, and received both practical education and formal training in mechano-mysticism since they were eight. Theodora had a surpassing talent for manipulating magical energy, and focused on sorcery and spellcasting -- unusual for the family, though not unheard of -- while Heroditus proved quite adept with the artifacts and devices that made Atlantis (and his family) so great. In an effort to expand his knowledge and skills, Heroditus applied to and was accepted at Claremont Academy. He hopes to learn about surface world technology and magic, to see if those techniques can be used in recreating lost Atlantean artifacts. He might also give the superhero thing a try -- he’s not eager to get into combat, but not averse to it either, and what better way to field test his creations?! PERSONALITY & MOTIVATION Heroditus is proud of his people and his family, and is eager to learn all he can and bring further honor to himself and his house. He misses the family workshops, but will learn to make do at Claremont. He’s strong minded, strong willed, and totally dedicated to his craft. He has some trouble understanding others who aren’t as dedicated to their pursuits, especially if those pursuits don’t involved magic or technology (ideally both). Atlantean society as a whole tends towards being conservative, haughty, proud, and reserved, valuing predictability & stability. It is martial but not violent, valuing peace & friendship and preferring diplomacy to battle, but also believes in the precise application of force when & where appropriate. Given their rigid & reserved natures, Atlanteans also tend towards xenophobia -- particularly against Surface Worlders -- though they regard such dislike & distrust as normal & sensible. As in most cultures, their adolescents often run counter to this. However, the typical rebellious Atlantean teen would still seem calm and cool-headed compared to the typical rebellious Surface Worlder teen. Most of this applies to Heroditus, though he is more open-minded and innovative (some would say iconoclastic) than most of his peers. He is the one who volunteered to go to the surface world and study at Claremont Academy, and he looks forward to seeing Surfacer magic and technology (which most of my peers dismiss), and how it might be integrated with Atlantean devices. POWERS & TACTICS Like most Atlanteans, Heroditus can breathe water, not through gills but because the lining of his lungs was adapted (due to arcanogenetic modifications performed on his ancestors) to allow him to extract oxygen from water and to withstand considerable water pressure. He can also breathe air, although he’s most comfortable in an aquatic environment (and can dehydrate over time if not immersed in water). His eyes are sensitive to light and able to see in dim lighting in the ocean depths, although not in complete darkness. His muscle tissue is denser than human; though he’s built like a swimmer (who sidelines as a blacksmith), he can out-perform most (non-metahuman) weightlifters. Another arcanogenetic modification done to him, thought up by him but designed & performed with the help of his mother, added magic-sensitive photoreceptor cells to his retina. This allows him to see magical energies, which appear to him as auras of various colors. Heroditus is able to generate magical energies, though only roughly; he can generate omnidirectional bursts of magical energies and create mystic shields around himself. He can channel his mystic energies into an assortment of mechano-mystical devices -- effectively acting as a battery for them (or, rather, the Devices provide Alternate Powers for his Magic) -- to generate a variety of effects; he’s always tinkering with them, refining and adding new abilities. His current kit includes a multifunction blaster, a gauntlet that can create, shape, and transmute matter, goggles that enhance his vision and hearing, and a headband that can generate light and holograms. ALLIES His family. His roommate, Benjamin “Rebound” d’Amato. His intramural squad/team (Green Squad): Danica “Chelone” Holmes, Veronica Danger, Monica “Lady Liberty” Gutiérrez, Astrid "Ms. Thursday" Torsten, Benicio “Octoman” Wang, and Micah “Thunderbird” Roebuck. ENEMIES No personal enemies so far, though he has little fondness for Deep Ones. MISCELLANEOUS Behind the Scenes I’d been toying with the idea for some sort of spellcaster. That idea morphed into a technomancer -- somewhat like Marvel’s Forge, in that they’d specialize not in magic spells but in magic items. (I’d thought of giving them ties to Ogoun, loa of metalworking & rum-making, since vodou loa are supposed to be as big in Freedom City as the Asgardians are in Marvel and the Greek deities are in DC, but I could not get that to gel properly.) Flipping through Atlas of Earth Prime showed that Atlantis’ technology is technomagical, so that became my starting point. (I also drew bits from the Champions superhero RPG, as technomagic is also prevalent in both their Atlantis and Lemuria.) The idea of “fish out of water” soon bubbled up, as did “exchange student,” so my technomancer became my second Claremonter. One visual difference I’m going to try to play up between him & my other gadgeteer: while Doktor Archeville’s tech is more art deco (with Kirby Crackles), Artificer’s -- and most Atlantean stuff -- will be more art nouveau. COMPLICATIONS Accident: While Heroditus is quite skilled with Atlantean technowizardry for his age, there’s still a lot he needs to learn. And there’s even more he needs to learn about Surface World technology and magic. So when he tries to test some new bit of mechano-mysticism he’s come up with, or tries combining Atlantean and Surfacer gear, unexpected side-effects can occur. The GM can give him a Hero Point in exchange for declaring that Heroditus’ experiments have created some sort of hazard, which he must drop his current task to deal with. Dehydration: If kept out of water for prolonged periods, Heroditus will weaken, first becoming fatigued, then exhausted, then unconscious. Exposure to intense heat or other desiccating effects can also cause this. Open Space Anxiety: Heroditus grew up in an environment that constantly pressed in on him, and not experiencing that gives him some anxiety. He sleeps in a pressurized water-filled tank, and when out and about wears a compression vest. The GM can give him a Hero Point in exchange for declaring that Heroditus experiences a major anxiety flare up, rendering him helpless and unable to take any actions. Where Are The Crystals?: The technology of the Surface World -- modern electronics, or even simple combustion engines -- are as weird and alien to Heroditus as Atlantean techno-magic is to Surface Worlder engineers. The GM can give him a Hero Point in exchange for declaring that his unfamiliarity with Surfacer technology causes significant setbacks. Heroditus is also invited along! At the outpost, the young Artificer learns of experiments done on changing Deep Ones back into Atlanteans, and finds evidence of atrocities. But not all the atrocities had been committed by the Deep One assailants. (And Carrions Bests) August 28th: Heroditus moves in to Claremont. He meets several students: Leroy aka “Sun Dragon” and Dio, Kameron aka “Red Lynx,” Lulu aka “Crystal Gazer,” and his roommate Benny “Rebound” d’Amato. (It’s Mov(in)g Day!) September: Heroditus meets a few latecomers to Claremont: Mia “Soliton” Mustafic-Markov, Danica “Chelone” Holmes, Judy “Daystar” Smith & Ashley “Watchdog” Smith, and Maxine “Spectre” O’Brian. Something about Heroditus deeply unsettles Danica, though he does not catch on to this. (Late Arrival) A few days later, Heroditus joins Claremont’s tech club (hosted by Valeria Velásquez), along with Benny, Judy & Ashley, Leroy, Mia, Claude “Gnomon” Jergens, Benicio “Octoman” Wang, Micah “Thunderbird” Roebuck, and Nick “Vox” Brown. At the first meeting, he sees Leroy create a block of “programmable matter,” OctoBen gets the idea to connect the block to the internet, and Heroditus helps with that by building a psionic-optical communication bridge. (Tech Compliance) A few days after that, Heroditus is summoned to Dr. Marquez’s office, to be made aware of an incoming guest speaker: Sea Devil, a Deep One! He shares some information about the conflict between Atlants and Lemuria, and agrees to behave himself during Aquaria’s speech. (Fish Out Of Water) He does indeed attend the speech, along with Atlantis’ Prince Telemachus and General Dalekos, Crystal Gazer, Octoman, Red Lynx, Soliton, Adam “Specimen” Lanchester, Sun Dragon, and Vox. The presentation goes… awry. (Dagon the King) October: Artificer, Ms. Thursday, Octoman, and Red Lynx get caught between tech smugglers and Red Lion & his New Freedom mercenaries! (Daka Rush: Claremont) November: Heroditus takes his roommate up on his offer of boxing lessons, and is joined by Claude, Judy & Ashley, and Octo-Ben. (Punching Up) Headmistress Summer introduces Giang “Tsunami” Trang to Heroditus, hoping the two might help each other. (Still as Water) Heroditus and his Claremont Squadmates (Chelone, Veronica Danger, Octoman, and Thunderbird) visit the Hanover Zoo. But Fear-Master and Goanna are there, too! (Reptile Brain) December: Deep Ones have attacked Atlantis! They injured Xyles, and Theodora is nowhere to be found! General Dalekos brings in Heroditus (and he brings in Octoman), while at the same time Aquaria (and Miss Grue and Wraith) investigate the attack. But what both groups find may unnerve all of them -- Theodroa was changed into a Deep One! (Hydra the Queen) 2020 February 9th: Heroditus joins Benny in another sparring session, along with Àjàṣorò "White Lioness" Tafari. (Again) March 7th: Heroditus and the rest of Green squad accompany Veronica Danger to find two lost archaeologists in the Taklamaka Desert, in Western China. (Ancient Enemies) The group is separated, leading Heroditus and Danica on An Unexpected Journey! April 1st: Heroditus is kidnapped enlisted to aid Princess Thaelia (aka Glamazon) and Giang "Tsunami" Trang, taken to San Juan, Puerto Rico and from there to an abandoned Atlantean outpost near the Bermuda Triangle -- one Thaelia's grandfather had used! (Spring Cleaning) April 7th: While studying in the library, Heroditius meets one of Claremont's newest students, Muirne (aka Shadowborne), and her guardian, Dee (aka Synapse). (New to Freedom) April (Late): It's prom time! But Heroditus is not interested in that. He is interested in the alternative event being put on by Professor Gale al-Salaf, though. Benny and Danica are there, as is new student Leon (Paper). But who is al-Salaf's special guest speaker? (Just Like Fire) October 31st: A Lemurian curse turns approximately 1% of Earth's population -- that's about 8,000,000 people -- into werewolves! Davyd & Heroditus are out walking Claremont's Quad when it hits the shapeshifter -- can his Atlantean associate aid him? (Night of the Wolves) 2021 April 24th: While at the Millennium Mall, Heroditus sees an AlienGator and Freedom Eagle ∞, falling through some sort of portal in the air! Fortunately, Muirne (Shadowborne) and Natalia (Nocturne) are also there, and the three Claremonters help protect civilians and subdue the reptilian mensace. And then welcome Freedom Eagle ∞ to their city (?). (Future Freedom, Today!) September 4th: Heroditus helps guide the incoming Claremont students to their rooms, with some success. He also chats with his new roommate, Charlie (Nevermore II), as well as with Bernadette (Multi-Girl), Ryder (Chitin), and Utsawa (Kensei). (Hut Two, Hut Two!) October 4th: Heroditus and the rest of Blue Squad (Chelone, Effigy, Invisigirl, and Paper) attend a "survival class" in Arizona's Painted Desert. So dry, so arid -- he hates it! And that's before they.... (Survival Class: Prussian Blue) October 31st: Heroditus attends A Gathering of Mages at Parkhurst, to discus some recent disturbances they've all been sensing. November 3rd: Artificer, and Freedom Eagle ∞, begin receiving mentorship from two Claremont alumni: Geckoman and Phalanx! (The Kids are Alright) December 17th: While accompanying some classmates (Neko Musume, Luke "Nightscale" Landers, Owain "Kid Gawain" Jones, Leon "Paper" Moore, and Alice "Shooting Star" Armstrong) to a pre-Christmas party in a Riverside warehouse, Artificer & friends stumble across a robbery happening at the Benedict Sans Office Tower. It's up to them to rescue the hostages and stop the bad guys! After they're done, Gawain turns the heroes into birds so they can quickly fly away, which Heroditus hates. (Party Crashing) 2022 June: Graduation from Claremont. 2023 December: Artificer decides to try the "be social" thing an attends the Freedom League Holiday Party. (Holiday Cheer!) 2024 February 14th: While on a tour of the Lighthouse with Ghost, hosted by Velocity, Heroditus bears witness to the (new) Star-Khan's (Kinarr's) attempts at heroism, which is undertaking in order to prove how different he is from his father (Kinan) & to woo Paradigm of the Praetorians! (Written in the Stars)
  4. "<Crantorium?>" He was obviously impressed at her visiting the noble's resort town, though he quickly subdued his expression as he sat next to her. "<Well, of course our Princess would take you there. Was it as decadent as the stories say?>" Now that he was closer and could get a good look at her, he noticed a strange aura about her. Thought I'd caught a glimpse of something on her while I'd walked around her, but wasn't sure if it was a trick of the sunlight. Now I can definitely see it is within her. But what is it? Something to do with directing and redirecting... something... something elemental, primal... water, yes, but something else... "<Apologies,>" he said after a moment of silence, shaking his head, "<I was distracted by... so you said Headmistress Summers is the daughter of the former headmaster? Is that typical here? I know academic institutions tend towards some degree of insularity,>" he clasped his hands together, fingers laced together, "<but an institution such as this being lead by a single family?>" At the mention of roommates and classmates, he cocked his head slightly, lets his hands fall to his side, and made a few pop-click sounds, the Atlantean equivalent of non-lexical fillers. "<Even back home, I was... never adept at dealing with people. And my interests are very rare, even among my people; up here they are nearly unique. Tell me,"> he leaned forward a bit, "<what do you know of Atlantean technology?>"
  5. Heroditus remained quiet at first, letting Dalekos take the lead (and because he wasn't sure he could restrain himself from making rude comments about the Deep Ones around them). But as soon as he and the Harbinger began talking, an even slimier sensation came over him. Dalekos said we would be playing the part of a barbarian warlord and his vassals, come to parlay with Deep One chiefs. But Harbinger says he 'has been in their camp for some time'? Dalekos sees the Deep Ones as monsters, he wouldn't be in league with them... would he? He did a double take at the chest Dalekos' men offered, such a gift would fit with the proposed ruse, but are those worthless baubles, or true Atlantean treasures? Has he been covertly aiding them? If so, is it for their benefit, or his? His family were true barbarians, assimilated into Atlantis only a few generations ago -- could he be trying to rally aid to conquer Atlantis for himself? And then he saw his sister. He darted back reflexively, then moved back in to get a better look at her. "<Theodora!? What... how... sister, what have they done to you?!>"
  6. Heroditus nodded, "<I had heard you were Princess Thaelia's roommate, but was not told of the extent with which she had shared our culture with you. Which parts of Atlantis did you visit? Was it just the primary city, or did she take you to some of the other colonies?>" He scratched his chin, thinking for a moment of the full beard he would one day have, and being able to stroke it while in thought. "<I myself have only been to a few of them, though do hope to visit more someday.>" This one projects a calm and thoughtfulness I have not seen in most other students here. More... Atlantean than most. A welcome difference! Is that her own persona, and why she was paired with Thaelia? Or was that something she picked up from her trips to our homeland? He smiled warmly at her personal revelation, "<so, we are both fingerlings far from our spawning grounds, and isolated from our peers. Summers is quite the matchmaker, I will grant her that. So, shall we get to know one another better?>" He pointed to the bench he'd been sitting in with one hand, and gestured towards the paths with the other, "<and would you prefer to do so while seated here, or while walking among the flora?>"
  7. Davyd had considered joining Victoria and Pan up in the air, but the recent troubles he'd had with turning into a bird (and back) discouraged him. Why do I have so much trouble with avians? Is it the hollow bones? The feathers? The aerodynamics? No, probably not that last one. I really should practice more. His eyes wandered from the two airborne comrades to Lulu, and Adam, lingered there a moment, then looked towards the approaching shoreline. He politely declined a ride in a tender, instead diving off the Horizon and swimming ashore, starting as a moon jellyfish, then a sting ray, and finally coming ashore as a large crab. He scuttled up to Lulu and Adam and resumed his human form, "so, how much time do you think we've got until we head down to the wreck? Think we'll have time to entertain some of the locals?"
  8. Miss Grue has been working with me on that, but there's been some difficulties. Seems the Grue bio-stuff that bonded to me was mostly what coded for their physical abilities, the shapeshifting stuff, not their psychic stuff. But maybe some human meditation techniques would be just what I need. Like you said, take stuff from different places and combine them into something new and unique! "Afraid I'm not familiar with that movie," Cousin Olivia replied, "but, yeah, that sounds like the right idea." Rather than actually trying on the outfits, Davyd shifted the morphic molecule unitard he wore to different configurations. When Olivia emerged from the changing room, her blue jeans & gray tank top had been replaced with a short pink dress with red & yellow floral patterns. "Oh, that looks amazing on you! I may not know much about fashion, but I do know complimentary colors!"

As such, it does not work on mindless robots (and similar constructs), nor does it pick up on nonliving objects (like buildings and vehicles).
  10. While Heroditus' eyes were directed at the viewcrystal (is he wearing my father's hand as a...?!), his ears were focused on the conversation between Dalekos and Galena. What are they up to? More 'military secrets'? What is 'it'? And what 'collection'? There is always more going on under the surface, but which is more dangerous: the things out there, or the things in here? He turned and nodded to the general, hoping his expression did not betray his inner turmoil. "I am, General," he replied with a sharp salute, then began going through the components in his pouches. "I have blasters of various elements and energies, and my alchemical gauntlet to reshape matter in the battlefield, both tried and tested devices. My image caster may be less useful," he pulled two strips of metal half out of one pouch, which OctoBen recognized from their time in tech club, "but I am sure I can repurpose it for the coming engagement."
  11. "General Dalekos said Theodora had gone missing," Heroditus interjected, "after the attack. That does not automatically mean she was kidnapped," he said defensively, "she may well have pursued them as they retreated. She is not some coy damsel to be rescued, she is a... a..." his eyes darted around a bit as he searched for the proper English word, "a firecracker, very active, aggressive-" Some would say too active, too eager to prove herself. "- and I can easily see her moving to take the fight to them. But she may have rushed in where prudence would be more advisable." He shook his head, made a few whistle-click Atlantean murmurings. "If we are very fortunate, we shall catch up with her as she readies an assault. If we are less fortunate, we may find her as she retreats from a failed attack." He was clearly considering other, more dire options, but did not voice them for fear of giving them power to manifest.
  12. He bowed again to Headmistress Summers as she left, then did a double-take at Giang. "<About as well as one might expect. It is not my preferred environment, but I do not stumble as much as I used to when walking up here.>" He walked in a circle around her, making an exaggerated show of wobbling. "<And as long as I can stay adequately hydrated,>" he patted the waterskin attached to his belt, "<I can get along fine.>" He knew other Atlanteans -- warrior Atlanteans -- would put on more show of bravado, claiming they could stride across the dryland as well as any Surfacer. But he had no use for such displays. He knew where his strengths lay, and where they did not. "<I can see you have learned much of my people,>" he touched fingertips to his lips and ears, "<and I am given to understand that you shall do the same with me. But I do not plan on being just the student here,"> he shook his head, then held both palms up, "<for I am quite willing to share what I can of Atlantis' culture and history with you.">
  13. Ah, sorry! Sorry! Sorry, his panicked mental voice came through. I really do need to work on that. I mean, I want to work on that. Shielding my thoughts, that is. I mean, being a master of disguise is all well and good, but a simple telepathic scan would see through that, right? But if I could mask my thoughts... It took "Olivia" a moment to respond -- Davyd had the physical part of his Grue "heritage" down, but the mental parts still eluded him, so there was some lag when switching between mental and vocal communication. "Oh, yeah, definitively! I just love looking at animals, seeing all the shapes life can take. And I've heard that some of the birds we'll be seeing are... unique to that habitat! I bet Darwin would have a field day there!"
  14. Doctor Galena? I have heard my mother speak of her. Blunt and unconventional, stubborn and intense, but unquestionably skilled. Though I also recall something about her disdaining most mechano-mystical devices, and favoring older, simpler medical techniques, such as herbalism and direct spellcasting. But why is she here? Wait, there was something else about her, an interest in Deep One culture... is she here in a diplomatic capacity? Heroditus had seen many ships like this before -- even been on a few, as a child, with his father and grandfather -- but always in dock, and usually incomplete. He'd never been in one with active engines, and when it thrummed to life, he placed a hand on one wall to feel the vibrations through the hull. While doing so, he did his best to stay out of the soldiers' paths, which wasn't too difficult given how well-trained they were in moving about the cramped vessel. Hrm, seems a bit out of alignment. Nothing too bad, not now, but in a few months that could become an issue. Once this mission is over, and my sister is returned, I shall have to bring this up with the arcanengineer.
  15. Heroditus nodded at Dalekos' words, and OctoBen could tell he'd been given a stern talking to. "As you know, General, my sister," he began, in English so his squadmate could understand, "is a highly skilled sorceress. She possesses mastery over water, and a lesser control over air, earth, and sound. I have seen her project bolts that damage or ensnare, create defensive shields or other crude shapes, and propel herself at fantastic speeds. I know she had also dabbled in mental effects, communicating with animals, or with other spellcasters, but her tutors had urged her to focus on her elemental studies. She had also tried her hand at transmutations -- trying to upstage me," a grin crept onto his face, then quickly faded, "but she could only manage such with water. Salt to fresh, liquid to ice, and so on." He saluted the gathered soldiers, and thanked them for their condolences. He eyed the submersible warily (and wondered if -- hoped that -- it was sturdier than it appeared) as he was escorted to the changing area. When OctoBen saw him again, he looked like something from a fantasy art calendar, all thongs and straps, with his pouch-belt and bandolier nestled among them.

  17. In order to make sure the Refs accurately count all your IC posts and award you the due amount of power points, please post with a list of all the threads in which your player character, NPC or sidekick posted IC this month (including the News forum). This topic will automatically close on the seventh day of the following month (i.e., February 7th, 2020) at Midnight EST. Also list any threads which you are GMing. GM posts count as double and can be assigned to whichever of your characters needs a 'push'. When you make your list, post a link to your first post for the month for each IC thread so we can jump right to it. When you start a thread, make sure IC is the first tag and topic prefix of the In Character thread, and OOC is in the first tag and topic prefix of the Out Of Character thread. It's not required, but additional tags including the major players and locations are viewed as a courtesy. Please list your threads in alphabetical order. Please clearly note any threads in which you are both player and GM/running an NPC. Please list your threads in a timely manner. Extending the deadline one week into the following month is already a grace period. If you've done any "extracurriculars" -- artwork, HellQ, 20 Questions, NPC, vignettes, guidebook pages, etc. -- please be sure to list them along with your active threads. For more information on ways to earn power points, see Character Advancement and Awards in the House Rules section of the Guide. Post counts should be formatted similar to the following: To make clear how many posts from rollover and GM posts are assigned to each character. Failure to comply with these guidelines may result in you being sent to the acid mines your post counts being postponed or skipped completely. If you missed the deadline, see this thread.
  18. "My father has always had the tenacity of a barnacle," Heroditus said solemnly. Of course losing a limb would not stop him from his duties. I hope I show such- And then their guest spoke. "I appreciate your offer, Squadmate Ben," a wide-eyed Heroditus quickly replied, eyes darting about nervously to the others Atlanteans, "but it is not necessary. My mother, Yrdoste, is a skilled medical engineer, specializing in medical devices and prosthesis. I am not certain if she has any that can reliably regrow limbs," he said carefully, always uneasy to reveal what Atlantis had lost over the millennia, "but if not, I know she can provide him with a prosthetic that will function as well as his original arm."
  19. Hunh. So he can show a softer side. There's hope for ya yet, buddy, an' I'm gonna make sure ya cross that threshold, even if I have ta drag ya, kickin' an' screamin'. Dead Head didn't both responding, since a] he wasn't sure Strix would be comfortable receiving acknowledgement of his thanks, and b] Strix was likely already out of earshot. (The last one wasn't actually much of an issue, since he'd worked out how to telepathically communicate with other undead, but he wasn't going to push it. Especially as he was feeling a bit light-headed from his recent exertions.) So instead he took one final look at the two guests auras. Finding no trace of the Red Death curse/infection in them, he headed back up to the ground floor, whistled for Mutt, and began walking towards the shelter. Srix'll probably still get there 'fore me, fast as he is.
  20. Dead Head nodded at Strix, then pivoted his head back to face Emily. "So, ya wanna head home now? Or," he nodded towards the Nowhere Men's kit-bashed entertainment system, "d'ya wanna finish the film you was watchin'?" Dang, seein' that does take me back. I saw that one in theaters, when it first came out, an' I weren't much older than her. "And, ah," he glanced over at the prone Woodchuck Man, then back to the girl, "I'm sure that -- if'n you wanted to -- you an' Murray can meet up again some time, hang out for a bit. Maybe I can even join y'all!" His rictus grin widened a bit, "ooh, we could be like Th' Wizard a' Oz! You as Dorothy, Murray as th' Cowardly Lion, an' me as Scarecrow, searchin' fer a brrraaaiiinnnsss..." An' maybe hangin' out with a few monsters will help ya learn how t'deal with some a' th' people you'll meet in Bedlam.
  21. His phrasing may be a touch vulgar, Heroditus nodded along to Ben's rundown of their squadmates, but he is not wrong. "General, now that we are out of Headmistress Summers' hearing, could you reveal more of what happened, exactly?" He glanced at Ben, then back to Dalekos, "my squadmate will need to know, to, so that he can be prepared for what we encounter." He glanced again between the two, "you said that Deep One raiders attacked father 'at his work.' Did you mean in his workshop, within the city? Or at the facility which you brought he and me to a few months ago?"
  22. "'Regulators'?" Heroditus called out as he chased after Ben, "is that what Green Squad is calling itself now?" He filled Ben in on what he thought would be most necessary while not giving away vital Atlantean secrets. "Some months ago, shortly before coming to Claremont, Deep Ones attacked one of our research outposts. General Dalekos brought my father and I in to investigate, to see what could be salvaged." He pushed the memories of blood and gore and unspeakable runes away from the surface of his mind. "Deep Ones recently attacked again, at one of my father's worksites. He was injured, and Theodora -- my twin sister -- has gone missing. While I have no doubt she would have fought valiantly, and pursued the raiders as they retreated, I fear she may have been captured, and... changed." Ben recalled him bringing that up at Aqauria's lecture, and understood why he now shuddered. "I need to see to my father, and assist General Dalekos in chasing down the raiders and locating my sister. And I know I can do this better with assistance from my squadmates." Ben detected some actual emotion creeping into the Atlantean's normally stoic voice.
  23. Heroditus had run back to the dorms to gather his belongings. He'd already had most of his gear on him -- he didn't like being apart from his tools and certain devices he'd been tinkering with for months -- but many of his more experimental devices he'd left on his desk or in his closet. He gathered them up and crammed them into the pockets on his belt and bandolier, scribbled a quick note to his roommate (gone home family emergency hope to return soon), then ran to the door of the room across the hall from his. A melange of electronic sounds -- musical and otherwise -- could be heard on the other side. Appearance and certain mannerisms aside, he is a skilled warrior with a good heart, and I am certain he will be eager to assist me. He pounded on the door to room 213, "Octo-Ben, attend! I... I request your aid. With a family matter. In Atlantis."
  24. "<What?!"> Heroditus had known of Deep One attacks on Atlanteans, even seen their aftermath, but he'd never imagined one might happen to his family. A dozen scenarios raced through his head -- especially concerning his missing twin sister -- and he had to place a hand on the nearest wall to brace himself. The shock quickly wore off, and he stood ramrod straight before Dalekos. "<Of course, General. I shall need a few moments to gather my gear, including some experimental devices which may prove useful.>" Dalekos may have blanched at the last bit: this called for tried-and-true methods, a bulwark of conformity and tradition against the chaos of the Deep Ones. But technomagic is what the Stylianos clan excelled at, and innovation was what Heroditus excelled at, so perhaps there was something useful there. I was supposed to have drills tonight with Green Squad, but I am sure Headmistress Summers will tell them of- oh! My squadmates may be able to help! That is what we are training for, to work together. Oh, but there is only one who could survive in Atlantis, and he... He saluted the General, and turned to run off to his room, but suddenly stopped and turned back. "<General, I... I have been made part of a small squad of students while here at Claremont, who are also learning and testing their special abilities. One of my squadmates in particular may be able to assist us -- he can survive in our world as well as we, and is a highly proficient warrior -- and I feel he could be a valuable asset to our party. May I bring him in?>"
  25. Dang, her adorableness transcends species. Man-Bird!Davyd was very glad Chelone's words had had their desired effect, and strutted -- gingerly, slowly, making as few sudden movements as possible -- back to be closer to his comrades. "Goo-oo-ood work, Danica! And Mia, too-oo-oo, that bread was a goo-oo-ood idea." He glanced back at the flock, and tried not to make eye contact with the ones that were still watching him. "We can do-o-o great things when we wo-o-ork to-o-ogether!" He suddenly crouched and pecked at one of several crumbs that had rolled his way, realized what a faux pas that was, and brushed the rest back to the flock.
