In order to make sure the Refs accurately count all your IC posts and award you the due amount of power points, please post with a list of all the threads in which your player character, NPC or sidekick posted IC this month (including the News forum). Also list any threads which you are GMing. GM posts count as double and can be assigned to whichever of your characters needs a 'push'. This topic will automatically close on the seventh day of the following month (i.e., August 7th, 2022 at Midnight EST). When you make your list, post a link to your first post for the month for each IC thread so we can jump right to it. When you start a thread, make sure IC is the first tag and topic prefix of the In Character thread, and OOC is in the first tag and topic prefix of the Out Of Character thread. It's not required, but additional tags including the major players and locations are viewed as a courtesy. Please list your threads in alphabetical order. Please clearly note any threads in which you are both player and GM/running an NPC. In threads where you are both player and GM/an NPC, please be sure to mark each post so we can tell who it should be allocated to. Please list your threads in a timely manner. Extending the deadline one week into the following month is already a grace period. If you've done any "extracurriculars" -- artwork, HellQ, 20 Questions, NPC, vignettes, guidebook pages, etc. -- please be sure to list them along with your active threads. For more information on ways to earn power points, see Character Advancement and Awards in the House Rules section of the Guide. Post counts should be formatted similar to the following: To make clear how many posts from rollover and GM posts are assigned to each character. Failure to comply with these guidelines may result in being fed to Tanngnjóstr and Tanngrisnir your post counts being postponed or skipped completely. If you missed the deadline, see this thread.

Horrorshow Davyd reached out with one hand and placed it gently on hers, smiling warmly at her. "Hey. Hey. Like I said, I am sorry things didn't work out between you and Adam. But I'm also glad you reached out to me to tell me about this big milestone in your life." "Now," he pulled his hand back and sat up a bit straighter, "while you gather yourself, this might be a good time for me to do a bit of talking." And.... 'talking'. "You remember our talks about what we'd do after Claremont, yeah? Well, most of those didn't pan out. Especially not that one really dubious idea," flashes of his chat with Bombshell and with Ace Danger bubbled up to the surface of his mind. "But, thanks to some help from Veronica and her Uncle Ace, I've found some very rewarding work, both behind and in front of the camera!" He brought out his phone and pulled up the Danger News Network app, and showed a few pieces of his reporting -- including clips from his first interview, with the new Patriot -- though in all of them, he wasn't Davyd, he was in an oddly familiar form. "Funny where life takes you, yeah?"

Horrorshow Lulu sensed his reaction first, but soon almost everyone in the restaurant heard the full-throated belly-laugh coming from Dayd! Hold on, hold on, he thought, trying to compose himself. "Phew... okay, so," he ran his hands over his hair, trying to smooth it out, "I am, of course," he made his tone as somber as he could muster, "sad for you that you & Adam split. I won't press for details, I'll let you decide how much of that you want to share. As for my... outburst," he stifled another giggle, "well, ah, the way you'd reacted to what I'd said made me think that you thought that I'd never had anyone. Which is definitely not the case!" He clasped his free hand over hers, "I've never had anything as deep as what you and Adam had, yeah, as serious, but I have had plenty of relationships." He took his hand off hers and leaned back a bit, but kept his other hand under hers, "one-night stands, friends with benefits... I think the longest one lasted just under a month. So, yeah, I do know have some idea of what it's like to have loved and lost."

Horrorshow Yeah, probably so - fear of a telepath taking the answers from the proctor's mind is hard to shake. Then again, there may be some parts where they do test your abilities, to see if you really are psychic and not just trying to run some co- Davyd winced as soon as he thoughtcast that, as he knew that cons & scams were the sort of "family business" that Lulu wanted to be very far from. Sorry. The sudden shift -- whether Lulu did it for her sake or for his, he could not say -- offered a welcome change. "Oh, yeah, yeah. Well, uh, no, not really," he added, suddenly very interested in the contents of his plate. A moment later, he looked back up at her, "I've, uh, never really had anyone that... well, anything like what you and Adam had. But, uh, I can imagine, sure."

Horrorshow I'm still a theatre kid at heart, he thought back, grinning, I'll always be a bit dramatic. He had ordered a similar sampler platter, blinis with a variety of fillings and toppings. He offered to share a few with his companion, in exchange for a few nibbles from her plate. He kept up a light verbal conversation, so the other patrons wouldn't see them just eating and staring at each other, while continuing a mind-to-mind convo. Telepaths do get a bad rap, there's still a lot of fear and mistrust. There's Psyche, and The Scarab, but the fact that so many of the most well=known psychics -- like Professor Psion and his kids, and the Cosmic Mind, and Lady Lunar -- are supervillains hasn't helped. But if you're open with your patients about your abilities, show that you'll only use your abilities in a way they consent to... well... yeah, this idea of yours could work!

Second verse, same as the first! Artificer: Bruised, 1 HP Move Action: Move back away from Snap-Maw, trying to keep at least 30 feet between them. Standard Action: User Create Object to re-create that coral cage around the villain. He'll need to make a DC 19 Reflex save. Succeed, he's fine. Fail, and he's trapped in a Toughness 9 cage.

Artificer That went down quicker than I'd hoped, Heroditus thought as he danced back from the Man-Shark, but it did slow him some. And that might just be enough.... He slapped his gauntleted hand upon the ground again, and another pulse of transformative arcane energies spread out. The shattered bits of coral on the ground melted and slithered towards Snap-Maw, reaching out like rocky tentacles for his wrists and ankles. "Which of the Seven Seas did you swim out from? And how did you come to be working with these Surfacers?" He wasn't really expecting an answer from the near-frenzied foe, but pondering such things helped keep his fear at bay.

Horrorshow Davyd's head turned sharply towards Eira, and he opened his moth as if to speak, but quickly snapped it shut. So she does have some misgivings! Good to see she's not totally caught up in the glittering promises of Talos and Rurland. Good to know. But there's still a lot more to uncover... He cleared his throat, and pivoted to face Kay. "I believe this particular avenue of investigation has reached an end. Were there other institutes or exemplars of Rurland's culture you wished to share with us? Or would now be a good time to meet with other members of Rurland's leading body?" He glanced at Eira, then back to Kay, "I'd like to speak with as many Ministers and other Cabinet members as possible - I feel my reports at this time would best be served by going for breadth rather than depth."

Horrorshow Davyd studied his menu with some care, being sure to note what was offered, and what he was sur his mother and babusya would think should be offered. Their brunch menu had a decent number of selections, and he ordered a sampler platter to try as many things as possible. Options look good, but how will it taste? He smiled warmly at her first statement, "well, you know I'm happy to help however I can! So what's gnawing on you, hunh?" Her final statement came faster than he expected, and his jaw, already open to respond, fell another inch or so -- far more than any human's should. He quickly composed himself, closing his mouth and steepling his fingers before him. "FCU's a good school," he began after a deep breath, "not as strict as some, not as lax as others. And I can definitely see you as a psychologist," he nodded, "you've always been a good listener, and your abilities could give you an edge in dealing with some patients. That having been said...." He lowered his hands and leaned forward a bit, then laid one hand on the table, palm up. He locked eyes with her, then looked upward; if she followed his gaze, she would see lines of tiny bumps rippling across his forehead, like Braille text. Psychics being open with their abilities is nothing new, he thought, making his forehead go smooth again, we've all seen the video of Alexandra Albright 'coming out'. And we know the issues she faced, though she had a lot as she was both a psychic and a Terminus Baby, so she faced double the stigma. Do you think you'll be ready for that?

Horrorshow Inside, they could see a beautiful mural running along the wall behind the tables, showing children running through fields of golden wheat, under a clear blue sky. The rest of the walls were light wood paneling, matching the hardwood floors, and behind the bar was a long mirror. The furniture was simple, dark wood, with green tablecloths and matching napkins. Soft chatter from the customers and staff filled the air, as did the scents of baked goods, fresh fruit, and the subtle hint of alcohol. "Welcome to Smachna," a man not much older then them said, "just two today? Table, or booth?" He lead them to their seat, and pulled out Lulu's for her. "Your server, Denys, should be along soon," he said before making his way back to the entrance, where a trio of new customers were waiting. "So," Dayd began as he sat opposite her, "how have you been? What have you been up to? Did you do any more traveling?"

Horrorshow "Thanks," he answered, a touch more bashfully than he'd expected, holding their embrace a few beats longer. "And you look great, too! What a difference a year can make, yeah?" He turned his head towards the doorway, then to the patio, "want to go in, or dine outside?" The restaurant, Smachna (Ukrainian for "delicious," he revealed), had six small tables under a vibrant yellow and blue awning, and another dozen out fully exposed to the elements. A trellis fence, with willow branches woven along the top and draping down, surrounded the patio. Peering through the entranceway and large front windows, they could see a cozy interior, with a bar along one side, and numerous small tables and booths along the other, illuminated by numerous (electric) candles. About half the tables had people at them, and the waitstaff all wore what Lulu presumed were Ukrainian-inspired outfits, floral skirts and vests, black trousers and white head kerchiefs.

A few blocks from the Freedom School for the Arts, Riverside, Freedom City 2022 May 1st (Sunday), ~9:45am. Clear skies, calm, about 60o F. Davyd Palahniuk hummed random tunes as he made his way down the Riverside street. He was in a good mood, which readily showed on his face -- and it was his own face which he was wearing. He'd let his hair grow out a bit over the winter months, and it now reached just to his shoulders, rising and falling as he bopped along. His outfit, as usual, was fairly simple, a yellow long-sleeved cotton shirt, with plains cuffs and collar, blue jeans, and well-worn brown sneakers. He'd had many reasons to feel in such a good mood. The successes he'd had in his new job with DNN, and the challenges he'd recently overcome, was certainly a factor. And the day's pleasant weather didn't hurt. But one thing was foremost in his mind at the moment, the reason he was walking down this particular street: a call from one of his former classmate, Louise ("Lulu" to her friends) Beaumont. She'd called him a few days ago, asking to meet, to catch up over a meal. There was a new Ukrainian restaurant which had recently opened in the area, and he'd wanted to check it out -- maybe to treat his family for a Mother's day brunch next Sunday -- and this seemed like a perfect way to combine his interests. He'd not seen much of her since their Euro-Trip, and that was almost a year ago! I wonder if she'll have changed much? He didn't see her when he got to the entrance, and waited a few moments...

D'oh! Sorry, thought I'd done this. Davyd's morphed right now, so his STR is 20/+5, and he's got Super-STR 5 from his Shapershift VP right now, so that'll be a total of +10 on the roll..... 1d20+10: 24 [1d20=14] Not bad!

Horrorshow I wonder if Farah -- this iteration of Farah, that is -- could pass a Turing Test? Such thoughts often popped into Davyd's mind, as he could not help but think of all the science fiction horror media he'd consumed that featured artificial intelligences and mental uploads. But this was no fiction, this was fact -- or, at least, some version of it, some elements of it -- and the Claremont graduate knew full well that truth was often stranger than fiction. He strove to remain polite and professional, asking open questions that Farah could answer in as much detail as desired (which turned out to not be much). Each response lead to more questions, though most were ones he kept to himself, as he knew he'd get nowhere with them. Not at this time, anyway. 'Deeper than recall allows'? Okay, this Farah is an incomplete version, but who decided which memories got pruned? And where are they stored? When will digital!Farah get to access them? He nodded politely at Kay's remarks, but before he could say anything, Eira had shot up to her feet and was giving her own responses. He continued with his own trains of thought, but this time gave voice to them. "I don't know much about the 'mass functioning of millions of synthetic minds at once,' but I do know a little something about organic hive minds. Those generally have lots of drones, workers, soldiers, and a few kings and queens. Is that what's going on here? The newly-uploaded form a large base of semi-sentient laborers, and they move up the ranks as resources become available?"

Horrorshow "Ah, so you were... critically injured? Chronically ill?" Davyd's eyes flicked briefly to Eira, "or a futurist, hoping to go beyond the limits of a standard human body?" Davyd knew something of the body mod scene, and the many reasons behind it, but he wanted to know Farah's reasoning. "Was this something you'd been researching on your own, or did someone from Rurland reach out to you with an offer?" Is Rurland reaching out to others? Recruiting from among both the willing and the desperate? There's certainly no shortage of people in need to advanced medical care who might see roboticization as a viable alternative... "Oh, you said you wife and son have not yet chosen uploading," he repeating, emphasizing those three words. "So they're not on a, ah, a waitlist? Are they here in Rurland? Could we speak with them?"

Horrorshow Okay... okay, let's talk this through. Davyd took a deep breath, feeling a slight tingle as the chilled air filled him. "I apologize for that," he nodded to Eira and Kay. "I should be striving for objectivity in this, and I am letting certain... preconceptions color my views." He could have said 'prejudices,' which would perhaps be more accurate, but he'd decided otherwise. He turned to face both Kay and Farah, "also, it is clear that there are some nuances, to both your technological capabilities and to your culture, of which I am ignorant. So, if I may be allowed a second take..." He cleared his throat, ran both hands through his hair, and turned to fully face the floating holographic entity. "Hello, Farah! So, you are a 'smart system emulation of an organic mind.' I suppose the question that would be foremost on my reader's minds is, how did you come to the decision to transition into this state?"

Artificer Heroditus instantly responded to Leon's words, finding comfort in the orderly instructions. "My people have not seen flames in 12,000 years," he called back, already rifling through his pouches, "but I may have an idea on how to deal with it!" He had, in fact, several ideas, but what he didn't have were an abundance of time or resources. Too far inland to bring the ocean in, any wind-generating devices would just as likely spread the fire as it would snuff it out... ah ha! He drew out a small bit of crystal, dull orange in color, about the size of a fingernail. A bit of ignaetium, crystallized fire. If I can construct an elemental inverter around it, so that instead of emitting heat, it draws it in.... yes, that could work! By the time he reached the building, he'd constructed a cylindrical cage of fine wires and thin metal plates around the tiny crystal. The plates were etched with a variety of Atlantean runes, for drawing and releasing elemental power, but he had installed them backwards, along with a few other hasty modifications. He considered telling his comrades that there was a slim chance that his kit-bashed device might project flame, or simply explode in a massive fireball, but no, they have enough on their minds already. He sent a pulse of magical energy into his device, and hoped.

"Hulklivia" is charging ahead and is going to try smashing the door in. Would that be just a Strength (+ Super-STR?) check?
-
Horrorshow "Hulklivia" nodded and followed Patriot's lead, charging through the smoke she'd just laid down. Oof, that's a weird effect, Davyd thought as the gas flowed past -- and blocked -- his olfactory senses. Most gas grenades have their own scent, but it's not powerful enough to block others. This must be a new formula. Wonder what other high-end tech she's got? Ah, no matter, she's got solid support and assistance, and that's what matters. Speaking of assistance, let's see if I can clear a way for her... Hulklivia leaped ahead of Patriot, bounding over her on inhumanly strong legs, then leaped again towards the door of the building, ramming into it with a broad shoulder.
