Why is Slick suddenly developing regenerative capabilities?

Ok, we got a pretty major overhaul for Dynamo here. I’ve included a list of all the changes that have taken place. You’ll note the changes net to +2, which is the power points he just received for October. He therefore has no power points left over. Eli sat there dumbfounded for a second before a wild, manic grin that mirrored the one that could often be seen on Dr. Archeville only a little too closely spread across his face, consuming it entirely. "Hold that thought." said Eli before quickly darting out of the room, clearly enthused. He came back trotting into the room with a sign reading "CAUTION: SCIENCE! IN PROGRESS" which he placed in between himself & Fulcrum and the rest of the Interceptors. Clapping his hands together, he continued "Okay, first thing's first, we got to see how fast you can go." He held up his pointer finger and then began moving it back and forth, up and down, much like a sobriety test. "Just follow my finger, and I'll increase the speed up until I lose ya. But if you keep up with me at max speed I will be quite cross." cautioned Eli. Eli lost the other Interceptors in short order but Fulcrum was able to keep up with him for quite a bit*. "Allllllright, that about seems to be your limit. Incidentally, this puts you at about a class 3 speedster, which puts you pretty near the top. Right, Science! OK, so all this junk occurred way back with Newton and his 3 laws. We're initially concerned here with laws 1 and 3: an object in motion stays in motion & equal and opposite reaction. This spawned the idea of perpetual motion, which is entirely theoretical. In order to get an object moving requires an external force of some kind, once in motion it will stay that way unless something reacts on it. Unfortunately for us, friction reacts on everything as do plenty of other forces. But, if you somehow made perpetual motion, you have an infinite power supply contained within a loop. This is where I first come in. My ability to convert energy into "GO FAST" is nearly unparalleled, because I not only bypass friction, I can convert it into energy as well, both in a form usable to run my muscles and pure electricity. Bugger all if I know how it works, it just does, so for now roll with it. Relative to what it would cost a normal human to do what I do, I require no energy, in this case, food. I figured it out once, I'd have to eat roughly 3,000 tons of pure nectar for every 0.000000001 of a second I spent at my top speed. So while I'm not a perpetual motion machine, I'm really, reeeeeeeeeally close." "Ok, so due to a loophole in physics I can generate damn near infinite energy. So what now? The process that runs, well me, is highly efficient, but also highly specialized. I GO FAST, that's my deal. If we want anything more out of that energy, we need a converter of some kind. But if we've got infinite energy, we need a converter with an infinite capacity." Eli sticks his hands out at Fulcrum as if to say "Ta-dah!" "To paraphrase you earlier, 'my powers break the fundamental laws of everything' in a nut shell. If you were able to selectively use the Terminus to mitigate the final few forces preventing me from being perpetual motion, I would become it. If I could funnel the energy I generate into the energy sink that is the Terminus, your powers would become infinite. You would literally have more energy at your disposal than is in the known universe, and the scope where you can utilize it. Right, with me so far? Now let's see what the egg heads have to say, and then we can start cracking on the white board there..." said Eli before he launched into a more in depth look at everything he's explained so far. He starts citing different cases, studies, papers, dissertations and books. He intersperses it with talks of all of the different facilities and such that have been looking into this. He also highlights some of Archeville's work. Once he gets a grounding in what's known he starts diving into all of the theoretical stuff, and gets down to the nitty gritty science of advanced mathematics. Wormholes, blackholes, alternate dimensions & time lines, alien technology, unknown phenomena, you name it, it's been given a number. There are also a few spots in he just shrugs his shoulders saying "this is where they lose me" or "this is their best guess, but it's a blind guess". Clearly there are some unknown variables at work here, but if not for a few gray areas, it seems pretty darn solid. "... Aaaaaaaaaaand that'll be that." says Eli returning to normal speed. * The rest of this conversation occurs at x5000 speed.

Tropes! Take 2: The Gruevasion & Atlas' trip to Russia offers examples of: Darker And Edgier And it's only getting worse. Atlas strays into a darker mentality which is started by his continuing troubled past, and his continuing struggle to keep a perspective on the world given his great power. It offers a Deconstruction on what happens to the hero after they deliver their World of Cardboard Speech and have to go back to the way things were. It takes a cynical approach than is normal and takes itself quite seriously, as it starts to explore Atlas' origins .

"So my first night out as Atlas, I killed two people and hospitalized 7 others, two of which will stay there for the rest of their lives. Not exactly the greatest start." Confessed Sam to Vera. "After I calmed down, I swore I would never kill again, and I never have. I've never told any of the other heroes about this, but I suspect quite a few of them knew, they just didn't say anything about it. They just didn't force the issue out of some sort of professional courtesy." Sam paused for a few minutes to collect his thoughts before continuing. "But I never felt it was wrong. I knew it was bad, but I didn't feel it was wrong. It was a necessary evil. That's why I fell into place with the Midnighters. Their views on morality were a little more... pragmatic than the other heroes. It's why I kept my distance from people like the Freedom League, I didn't think I could measure up, and that by even trying to join their ranks that I was lying to them." "But I kept at it. I was involved, I kept heroing, but I kept my distance for the most part. Then it all came to a head when the Grue invaded. Try as I could, I couldn't shake off the Grue influence. But was I really trying my hardest? I'm physically stronger than anyone else I know, period. I always hold back, just a little bit, even in those life or death battles. To go all out, to feel that sort of power only I can truly bring to bear and to legitimately try to deliberately cause someone as much pain as possible... it was a release and it felt good. These are good people Vera. The best. They'd die for a complete stranger. In the face of complete annihilation they won't back down because they know a friend needs their help. These are the people that will always bet on that one glimmer of hope and go all in every time. And all I could think about was how good it would feel to have their bones break in my hands. I-- I'm not even sure who I am anymore."
-
Eli looked at her dumbfounded. "Do we really look like we have anywhere near that level of structure?" He chuckled a bit. "It's a drill, it's people using their powers and abilities to just relax and have fun. No drills, no time limit, and no rules except for the ones you make up on the spot. We make super hero teams because we know nobody can go it along. What's the point of doing a team exercise if you have to exclude people in order to do it? You gonna get in there or not?" replies Eli sounding a little more mature since last Erin talked with him.

Eli had gotten a little consumed in his book, he wanted to finish up the paragraph on diminishing returns before he joined in the discussion. "I'll vouch that German food is most excellent." supplied Eli. "Now this is your special day and all of that, so it's not my place to interject, but... are you really sure that having it outside of the country is the best idea. Seems like that could create a lot of headaches, like getting passports for everyone and getting the marriage recognized in multiple countries. Now I'm not an expert or nothing, but that's something you may well want to think about first before you start booking flights."

So recently my teammates have just started to realize that I've been putting in a lot of work into my studies. From all the formulas and jargon I've been using, it's really started throwing them for a loop. I mean, I go from using "brosef" every other word to understanding complex physics equations and using them in casual conversation in like the 6 months that I've known them. But see the thing is, my 6 months is different from their 6 months. See when ordinary people just sort of zone out, they can miss great swaths of time, time moves faster for them. I've got the opposite problem, when I zone out, I unconsciously start using my powers, time goes slower for me when I zone out. It's actually why I really started applying myself to math and physics. It's not that it had useful life skills or would be good to know for heroing, but it was because it could keep me busy for a long time. Math was my worst subject in school. If you took all my grades in math they'd spell "FFFFFFFFFFFFFFF-D" I needed something something hard to eat up hours of my day so I wouldn't have so much time on my hands. But then the worst thing happened: I got good at it. Really good. I'm acing all of my math and science classes without having to speed up to do all the calculations. I can do them normal time. I'm going to have endless hours for the rest of my life, and I don't think I'll have enough things in the day to fill those hours.

"Aw why not? It's fun, you should try it! Besides, it's not coping a feel, it's giving myself a handicap to make sure I get the most out of training." Eli jokingly retorted, as he clung to an upside down triangle spinning rapidly. You could see electricity arcing across his hands and feet. "Trying to see if I can stick to walls with static cling alone." explained Eli. "...Needs work." he told Erin midair as he went bodily flying past her a moment later having been thrown from the simulation. Recovering from his failed attempt, Eli stood next to Erin watching the scene before them. "Not really your thing is it? Or is this just so far outside your comfort zone you're not even sure where to begin?"

Kwame Patterson. That was the name of one of my killers. Specifically he was the one who had hit me in the back repeatedly. He was the first and only fully normal person I hit with my full strength as Atlas. The force of the blow reduced his body to something between chunky salsa and red mist. I would later say that I was horrified at what I had done, and it was a mistake brought about by not knowing the full limits of my strength. That was a lie. I really did enjoy turning that waste of flesh into nothing more than a stain. The other thugs turned tail and beat feet, screaming "monster". One of them was brave enough to squeeze off a couple of shots, trying in vain to stop me. I threw him into a brick wall for his efforts, but I was nice enough to pull my strength enough to not send him through it. And I kept at it, picking them off one by one, like a killer in a horror film. And then there was just one left, the ring leader behind it all. His name was Vinny Nickles, or at least that's what he was known as in certain circles. He had made his way to a little hopped up muscle car. He sped off with the tires screeching, reducing me to a red smudge in his rear view mirror. Or so he though. I leap high into the air, making up the distance between us almost instantly. I land bodily in front of his car. He tries desperately to swerve out of the way. But I swat the hood of his car, practically pancaking it, and I bring it to a complete stop. But in his hurry, Vinny never got to fasten his seatbelt. He was thrown from the vehicle, he did not survive.
-
I would later learn that I was shot 26 times. When you're shot, you don't really feel pain. You just feel part of you get really hot, and then get really cold. In case, this happened to be my entire torso. This would also mark the first time in my life that I would die, or at least I believe it is. There was no one qualified on scene to truly determine if I died. But believing otherwise is foolish. I fell unceremoniously to the ground. I was my attackers - no, my killers - turn and walk away laughing and joking before my world went dark. And that's where the story gets weird. I felt something stir inside of me. That's an overused expression, but I mean it quite literally. I felt something move inside of me, something was stirring, something was changing me, in the most painful way possible. My eyes snapped open and I vomited blood and dinner all over the street. All of the bullets in my chest began to force themselves out of my skin and fell to ground. My broken bones snapped back into their proper place before being snapped out of it again. Everything was stretching, growing, tearing and contorting. When it was all over I towered over my murderers who cowered in fear. I was a god.

"I will grant you that in your line of work, that fire does indeed have its uses." replies Tempest as he disperses the ice/fire ball. "But the same sort of qualities that make it practical also make it more dangerous. As you are well aware, once fire is released, it becomes more difficult to control and it can continue to do damage all on its own. The other elements simply revert to their non hostile default state. Though perhaps my perspective is lacking, I have never been wanting for a singular element, they have always been at my disposal. I believe you humans have a saying 'If God gives you lemons, make lemonade.' That is a way of saying use what you are given to its greatest benefit yes? While I do believe that is a good addage, it also points out a flaw in human rationalization. How often do you believe humans are truly aware of everything they have at their disposal?"
-
The beating continues. I don't know how many more shots I wound up taking. I couldn't string any thought together. Everything was in a haze, and the world was getting muted and dark. I was dying. And I realized there wasn't a damn thing I could do about it. I'm dimly aware that the thugs aren't bludgeoning me anymore and I'm leaning up against a wall or something, probably one of the buildings. It gets real quiet in the alleyway for a moment. All I can make out is my own ragged breathing, and the slow plitter platter of my blood hitting the pavement below me. My eyes are rolling back into my head, I'm barely conscious. And then I hear the reason it's gotten so quiet: I hear a gun being cocked. The guys who hadn't been doing anything up until this point have all pulled out guns and they're about to deliver the coup de grace. "You should've just gone back inside old man." calls the leader, with his gun leveled right at me. He pauses for a second like he's expecting me to spout off some kind of one liner. It's not coming. After the beating I took, I can't even gurgle a response. Finally they pull the trigger and I'm the target of a hail of gunfire at point blank range.
-
I spit out some blood, while I'm vaguely aware that there's quite a bit of that on the floor of the alley already. There's a rather painful throbbing where my left arm should be. My back feel like I slept on a bed of nails, and I can't stop my knees from shaking. But I'm still standing, that's something right? No, not really, no. I had to do something now. It was do or die. I cock my fist back and I belt the guy who's been hitting me in the back this whole time. Or at least that's what the plan was. I never felt my hand connect. I had missed. My one shot and I blew it. I got a nice boot to the head for my efforts. The force of the blow knocks me for a full 180, and I stop just in time to get a 2x4 to the side of my face. It knocks more than one tooth out, and my mouth just kind of hangs open, definitely broke my jaw.
-
Seeing their opening, the thugs all just start swinging at every bit of me that they can see. I'm able to block the sloppy shot from Mr. Broken nose. But Mr. Cheapshot from before hits me square in the back again and now I'm really not seeing straight. One of his buddies takes a pot shot at my head, but I cover up well enough that my head isn't reduced to chunky salsa. But the arm that blocked the blow's pretty messed up. I don't think it's a break, but it's damn close. While I'm still reeling from that last hit, the other guy with a crowbar catches me with a shot to my lower ribs on the right side. That one I know is a break. If the loud crunching sound wasn't enough to tip me off, the fact that the world suddenly seemed to be slipping sideways and I'm starting to loose vision.
-
So this is a fine situation I got myself into. I really wish I still had my bat. I backup a little bit so I don't get completely surrounded. I try to keep my arms in so I can intercept any incoming attacks, and I stay pretty light on my feet. When one of the guys pulls back to take a swing at me, I pop him one right in the nose. I break the darn thing judging by the amount of blood leaking out of the guy's face. His swing goes wide as he's distracted by the pain, which would ordinarily be a good thing, but I was really hoping I could knock the guy out in one shot. Now all I did was make him angry, though pretty inaccurate. Keeping my arms in was a good idea. I managed to avoid the next couple of wild swings. I'm looking for an opening so I can counter attack. I'm just about to make my move to elbow one of the guys with a crowbar when one of his buddies catches me square across the shoulders with a solid his with his 2 x 4. Pain explodes across my back, and my vision goes blurry for a second, but I'm still up, for now.

Round 4: Sam can't take that kind of punishment again. He'll spend an HP to shake off the stun. He's just going to use straight DA 2 this round. Sam Atk roll vs Thug DEF 12, DA 2, DC 22 (1d20+4=6) But it'll miss! Gang Attack Round 4, DC 19, DEF 17 (1d20+2=5, 1d20+2=14, 1d20+2=15, 1d20+2=21, 1d20+2=21) Sam Toughness save, Round 4, #1 DC 19 (1d20+3=8) Sam can't take a disabled so he'll use his last HP to reroll. Round 2: Sam is going to use our awesome sauce house rules to Defensive Attack 2 / Accurate Attack 2 (as he had neither of the feats at the time) this time, and tries to pop another one of the goons with a bat, while keeping his guard up. Sam Atk roll vs Thug DEF 12, AA/DA 2, DC 20 (1d20+6=14) That'll hit. Thug toughness save DC 20 (1d20+2=20) but the thug stays up! Thus Attack rolls vs Sam, DEF 17, DC 19 (1d20+2=3, 1d20+2=12, 1d20+2=3, 1d20+2=21, 1d20+2=9) 1 hit. Sam Toughness vs Bat round 2, DC 19 (1d20+7=11) Injured, Bruised & Stunned. Sam's in a world of hurt next round.
-
Without saying a word, I just heedlesly charge right into the fray. If I had said anything then I would lose my one shot at a surprise attack. The "oh crap" look that spread across the thug's face made it all worth while. The bat catches the thug full in the chest, lifting the thug clear off his feet and slamming him into a dumpster some 10 feet away. Good news: he ain't getting up. Bad news: I broke my bat on him, so now I've got another 8 guys to deal with and now I'm unarmed. The rest of the gang members suddenly all get brave and charge me, swinging their weapons wildly. The first guy to reach me swings overhand. A dangerous blow, but an easy one to avoid. The second one is a bit more dangerous and swings at chest level, and I barely get my hands out in front of me to cushion the blow a bit before it slaps me across the chest. It hurts, but I can still keep my wits about me. The others don't fare much better, only one of them is able to score a glacing blow on my shoulder, but now I'm surrounded.
-
And its time for battle. Sam gets 1 HP for being caught in a trap. Sam's stats are that of PL 10/150pp Atlas, minus the entire powers section, making him effectively PL 6 ish. But by being reckless, he gets to go first in initiative. He is squaring off 8 thugs, modified for whatever weaponry they have, and the Gang leader. Sam's first attack provokes an impossible save from the Thug, so he passes out. However, the DC mod provoked is higher than the Toughness of the bat, so the bat breaks. The guys with the bats and crowbars (minus the one who was just KO'd) are closest to Sam, so they'll attack first. Sam's Defense is 13 due to Charging this round. Thugs vs Sam DEF 13, DC 19 (1d20+2=10, 1d20+2=22, 1d20+2=11, 1d20+2=20, 1d20+2=5) Minions can't score critical hits. Sam Toughness save vs Bat 1 DC 19 (1d20+7=8) Eww. HP to reroll. Sam Toughness save vs Bat 1 DC 19, HP reroll (1d20+7=14) Pass. Sam Toughness save vs Bat 2 DC 19 (1d20+7=20) Knife guys can't get in range yet. Gang Leader hangs back. End Round 1 Sam: 2 HP, Uninjured Thugs: 7 remaining Gang Leader: Unharmed
