Late February 2020 It was a couple of days after the Valentine's Incident - a date where everything had gone terribly wrong, even if the aftermath had been enjoyable enough. But now Fa'Rua was back on her ship in all the ways that mattered and Ashley Tran was down here on Earth, dealing with the aftermath of her personal secret being exposed in a very unpleasant way. She had _not_ told Judy that she'd been spotted out with her date; being 'made' as going out that night had been difficult enough, and she did not need a teenager's questions about her space girlfriend even if it was from a teenager she loved like the dumbest of her little sisters. But she had to talk to one teenager, didn't she? Summers of course had played student discipline cards close to her chest, as she always did (which Ashley had to admit was probably fair, even if it made her job substantially harder) but she knew that the immediate situation with Davyd had been resolved, and he hadn't informed on her to Summers. Which meant the ball was in the court of Ashley Smith, teenage hooligan, and not Callie Summers, feared headmistress. Great, just great. She tracked Davyd down near the end of the day, when it was still a while before the dinner bell but after the end of afternoon classes. She looked like 'herself', white t-shirt with leather jacket over it, battered denim jeans, her bubblegum-pink hair a shot of color above her dour face.

Eira frowned, drumming her fingers against the taffeta of her sleeves. "I told you before. I am not interested in whatever stupid scheme this is. I will not go there and be fooled." "Then there's nothing to fear, is there, Eira?" asked Kay, not unreasonably. "If you won't be fooled by us, you're the perfect person for them to bring." Eira shot a glance at Dee, one almost asking permission, before she shook her head and said, "...all right. If I can work it into my schedule, I will go."

"Checks out." After a moment's consideration, Ashley lowered her gun and turned to the Raven - the new one. It had taken her a while to learn to treat Alex the way she'd have treated Callie, but the truth was his competence and professionalism made that easy enough. "What the f*ck?"- 47 replies

It didn't work. Eira was trying, or giving a good imitation of it anyway, her face screwed up in concentration, teeth gritted - but she couldn't do it. She bumped heads with him, she smacked into the side of the wall with her wings, and by the time they were done she'd almost fallen on her ass in front of everyone. She'd also never so much as touched the scarf, the look in her eyes promising bloody murder if it came her way when she hadn't earned it. When the music was done, she excused herself quickly to walk back to the bathroom.

Eira and Pan erupted to the surface together, holding hands like diving partners, landing together by the side of the pool as if they'd practiced it for ages. Eira blinked a few times, staring at Pan - and said, "...Good job," before she turned and walked quickly away from the pool area. "I am going to go back and change!" she called out as she zipped through the crowd and headed straight for the room the girls had been using to slip into their suits.

Kar-ag smiled, his jewels gleaming in the light of the twin flames. "My boys, what a spectacle! Here, take these." He tossed a bean to both Leroy and Dio, both covered in a spiral of gold and green that vaguely suggested flame. "Careful, they have heat to match such a tale." Sure enough they did, the mix of fiery and sweet taste reminding Leroy a bit of the jalapeno ice cream that he'd heard Ashley describe as her favorite. "Mind, ah, the fire aboard the station, boys, the guards are...mistrustful of youthful experiments." With Leroy and Dio fed, the shopkeep turned expectantly to the other students. Eira looked at Kar-ag consideringly and said with increasing fire in her voice, "Here is the end of what I told you before: "I have said to the gods | and the sons of the god, The things that whetted my thoughts; But before thee alone | do I now go forth, For thou fightest well, I ween. Ale hast thou brewed, | but, Ægir, now Such feasts shalt thou make no more; O'er all that thou hast | which is here within Shall play the flickering flames, (And thy back shall be burnt with fire.)" She cleared her throat and added, "Then they torture him for eternity with a snake. It is a good story." "My little synthetic, you have earned the...what you call it, coffee bean?" Eira looked pleased with her dark brown acquisition, and bit down on it at Kar-ag returned his gaze to the rest.

Angelic The hard part had been finding a place for everything, but Eira had taken advantage of her internal anatomy. While Lulu and Mia finished getting dressed in the dorm bathroom, she checked what was hidden in her arms and her hands, nodding all the while. As there was nothing in the bathroom she needed for her own personal grooming, she dressed in front of the mirror she'd built over her desk. An observer, looking at her costume, would have decided she was dressed in silver. Her hair was dyed a silvery, sparkling color and her lips a distinct shade of pewter; matching a sparkling-silver dress seemingly infused with light that bared her shoulders and upper back, and went well with her long pewter gloves. It was a more typically feminine costume than she typically wore but even in a liberal-minded place like Claremont, the girls typically dressed up for formal occasions. And what an occasion this would be. She was smirking still when the bathroom door was opened.

April 2020 The Doom Room The Doom Room has never looked like this before. The room looks like a big, bustling speakeasy from the 1920s, not a place that was but a place that should have been, where boys, girls, and other folks of all shapes and sizes can sit together at wooden tables, mugs of cold, frosty root beer in hand (more daring souls can sample the punch), fedoras and suits on the boys, skirts and pearls on the girls (or vice-versa, depending) and if they feel so inclined walk out onto the dance floor and move to electroswing 'played' by a simulated band (complete with pretty redheaded torch singer) that'll be happy to step aside for any brave souls eager to volunteer. You can peer out the window to see city streets full of roadsters and coupes, or step into the unisex bathrooms and see what sure looks like period fixtres! There are adult chaperones here and there, teachers and parents mostly, but for the most part this is the day for young people. "Ladies, gentlemen, and nonbinary people of all ages!" Zoe Robinson, aka Morgana, is downright resplendent on-stage by the band, standing next to the torchsinger who might have been her twin. "Welcome to the junior-senior prom of _2020!_" And the music kicked up, and a few brave souls started looking across the room at their dates - or maybe for a lucky few, across a table...
-
"Well, young people like yourselves must have many kinds of stories," said Kar-ag thoughtfully as he looked over the group. "Quite the gaggle of isolates and mutates I see! Well, all kinds are welcome in the shop of a bean merchant - it is a sacred tradition," he clarified. "Perhaps we can start there." He pulled out a stool from behind his cart and studied the Claremont students expectantly. "Tell me a tale of the sacred."

Eira's eyes focused on Salvo. "I know what I am doing," she said out loud in a throaty hiss, sounding thoroughly aggrieved. "And I am not little." She followed Salvo back to their main gathering point, speaking in a whisper pitched loud enough to carry to everyone. "There is an active information network here, one with which I am unfamiliar," she said cooly. "The security systems blocked my initial probing but I believe I can overcome it with time. A hard connection will help - ah!" At the sight of the viewscreen overhead, she took off, the air around her thrumming and rippling with an active magnetic field. "We are in a very large structure," she said out loud as she reached the viewscreen. "I cannot fly without a significant magnetic field. Do not stand below me." At that juncture, she put her fist through the viewscreen, driving her forearm through the display surface.

"Three of your governments have discussed the use of nuclear weapons against Rurland as a preemptive measure," said Kay with a thin smile. "Others are in the process of developing EMP devices with similar, less environmentally-destructive effects. We want peaceful co-existence, Dee - it is the organics who desire our destruction." She shrugged. "You may come visit if you like - all of Vanguard can, as my guests. We can show you what we are building here." "You should have told me you were planning to go," said Eira suddenly. "Do you know what it has been like here? The questions I have had to answer - the looks I get in school now?" Kay shrugged and said, "You can come too, Eira. You are always welcome here."

Eira is going to attempt to access the local wi-fi network, both civilian and super (or installation-wise) as soon as possible upon her awareness returning. She'll be looking for information on where she is and what's going on. She'll take 10 or 20 with her Computers as necessary, using Mental Quickness 6 - giving her either 20 or 30 depending on exactly how you want the check to work.

The stone-faced robot stared at Pan - and suddenly burst out laughing. She chased him underwater, the water blurring slightly as she zipped around in her personal magnetic field. She couldn't wrestle him through his pixie dust and she couldn't actually catch him up to him underwater, but his stamina was much less than hers. So she pursued him tirelessly, all around under the water, ready to grab him and fling him out of the water again if he seemed to be flagging.

A distinct look passed between Eira and Kay on-screen before Kay said, "I was contacted by Talos himself." Behind her, the image of carefully interlocked gears she'd been painting came into view, each of them bearing a Greek letter. "He told me that he valued my perspective as one who had recently been organic herself, and hoped I might help our peoples find common ground." "..why would you listen to him?" asked Eira, sounding honestly confused. "You have read about him, so have I. Whatever story he is telling now, he has been a monster for millennia. One such as him does not change because it suits him." Kay frowned at Eira. "That is stupid." Eira bit back something that, even in the fancy dress, made it look like she was about to bite the other teen's head off. "You cannot judge the world from the books you have read, Eira. Talos has done terrible things, but he is doing great things for our people. This is a place where I do not have to worry about being sent away for my own good, by organics who think they know better than me." Now Eira really looked mad.

Science Colleges are placing a greater and greater emphasis on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math). Success in your high school science classes is a crucial piece of making yourself a competitive applicant. Scientific literacy is also a necessary competency for enabling you to productively engage with your studies and current issues. Claremont’s primary science teacher is Athena Téras, a Greek woman who keeps her bright green hair in carefully-maintained dreadlocks. She's young and perky, and passionate about science. Rumors abound about her - shapeshifted gorgon? Daughter of Daedalus? Mechanical woman? Enjoys puzzles, drinks lots of really strong coffee, never seems to sleep. Not married, not interested in anything but science - or so she says, anyway. Most states require three to four years of Science coursework in high school. Social Studies Even if you don’t plan to study history or politics in college, your social studies classes are an important piece of your development as an engaged, productive citizen of whatever nation, dimension, or plane of existence you happen to be from. Studying the forces that have shaped and continue to shape our world are critical for making sense of various subjects you may study in the future. Claremont’s primary social studies teacher is Gale al-Rashid, a dashing athletic type with a mysterious backstory and what seem to be elemental powers. If asked, Gale just shrugs and says “I am just here on a temporary visa, this is not really home - so why put down roots?” Gale (whose pronouns are they/them, thank you!) looks to be in their twenties and has a taste for old-fashioned suits and ties. Gale is the sort of teacher who likes to make some students their special project, offering them particular mentoring outside of the classroom. Dark hair, tan skin, Muslim. Social studies classes you might take at Claremont include: American History World History Geography US Government European history International relations Economics Psychology Women’s studies Religious studies Sociology Anthropology Political science Current events World religions -

English (Language Arts) - Joan Collier English and Language Arts high school classes provide an important foundation for college success – regardless of what you plan to study or what career path you’d like to take, you’ll need strong reading comprehension and the ability to communicate clearly through your writing. Claremont’s primary English instructor is Joan Collier, a semi-retired heroine named Fusion who also has done both print and television media in Freedom City and on the West Coast. She’s a tall woman of mixed Anglo and Native descent, with a muscular build and tentacled arms she usually keeps tucked under a big, A-line black skirt. She has a reputation as a strict grader that she’s entirely earned, but has good taste in fiction. Married to a man, has a daughter who has graduated from Claremont a few years ago. Various English courses you might take at Claremont include American literature Cosmological literature Comparative literature Contemporary literature World literature English (Grade Level) Creative writing Journalism Rhetoric Composition Poetry Debate -

Mathematics Wherever you plan to go to college, whatever you plan to study, whatever your heroic future, you will likely be required to take some classes that rely on the quantitative reasoning skills you will solidify in your high school classes in math. Claremont’s primary math instructor is Darian Skylar. He’s a giant jerk! Sure if an adult asks him, he’ll say he sees it as his job to teach them never to underestimate the human mind; a weaker opponent can always beat a stronger opponent by outwitting him - but outwitting your students makes you a jerk, ya jerk. Blond, late middle age, it would surprise the hell out of his students to see him at home with his husband and their three cats. Knows he should probably retire but likes the work. Mathematics courses you take at Claremont might include: Pre-Algebra Algebra 1 Algebra 2 Geometry Trigonometry Pre-Calculus Calculus Statistics Integrated math -

Family and Consumer Science Though many American high schools have moved away from their family and consumer science programs in the last thirty years, Claremont maintains a wide variety of classes designed to prepare their students for work in the domestic sciences and for being “responsible, competent adults. Claremont’s primary family and consumer science instructor is Darla Lynn, a woman with the build of an Olympian athlete that she usually keeps behind an apron when she’s working. Wears enough patterned dresses that you’ll think she’s someone doing trad housewife cosplay, but may well be the loudest and most vigorous feminist on Claremont’s faculty. Greying black hair, looks to be a well-preserved fifty. Doesn’t talk much about her romantic life but wears a rainbow pin and yes that was her at the Pride parade! Strong enough to lift a fully-grown man over her head without breaking a sweat, she obviously takes care of herself. Family and consumer science classes you might take at Claremont include: Culinary arts Family and consumer science Home economics Nutrition CPR Fashion design Retail marketing -
Vocational Education Though many American high schools have moved away from their vo-tech programs in the last thirty years, Claremont maintains a wide variety of classes designed to prepare their students for the skilled trades of tomorrow - today Claremont’s primary vo tech instructor is Dr. Heinz Drusselstein, an immigrant from Eastern Europe who speaks with a distinct accent. He acts like a tough teacher, no-nonsense in his demeanor and address, but he’s a marshmellow in private. No powers, retired mad scientist (or so he claims - his stories about the good old days sound pretty crazy), very clever. Divorced, father of a college student who must have gotten her good looks from her mom. Votech classes you might take at Claremont include: Auto repair Woodworking Computer-aided drafting Driver education Cosmetology Networking Metalworking Robotics FFA Electronics

Kay smiled, and put down her brush. She turned to face the 'camera', partially obscuring her project, vaguely recognizable as a complicated series of interlocking gears reproduced in watercolors. "Then I'm very happy to see you, Dee, Eira!" She beamed at Eira, and blew her a kiss. "Oh I wish you were here, Eira!" she said, excitedly waving at her work. "It's everything we ever dreamed." "Yes, well." Eira crossed her arms over her chest, shooting an uncomfortable glance at Dee, then said, "Is it really?" "Yes. I finally feel...free, in a way I never did back in London. I'm sorry I left so quickly, Dee," she said to Synapse, sounding truly apologetic. "But I was worried about what would happen." She pinched a thumb and forefinger together in front of the 'camera'. "I didn't want to find that I am 'guilty of attempted theft of government property' for taking myself away."

"Well, between hubby and wife over there, and oh, things I hear, the adults are all joining them in that...but yes, Pan is a familiar type, isn't he?" said Tarva with a thin smile as she settled down onto one of the chairs by the pool. She took out, as if from nowhere, a large black parasol and arranged it over herself as she spoke, shoving it through a circular holder in the side of the chair. "He's a dream come to life, Eira doesn't dream - a natural enough pairing once you get past the different species. A bit more clean-cut than I'd have expected Eira to bring home, but perhaps she has plans to change that." Her smile broadened as she relaxed in her personal shade. "It all may end in tears, but..." She reached over and took Kimber's hand. "Better to have the heart to break, hmm?"

Eira let herself go too, down to the depths of the pool where they were protected by the anonymity of eight feet of chlorinated water. So here they were again, just a boy and a girl floating down below, Eira standing there on the pool bottom like a statue with her hair flat behind her back, her hands folded behind her back as she studied Pan. Once the initial sheaf of bubbles came off her she really could stand there still as a statue, not breathing or twitching, watching Pan underwater. Up above, Tarva peered down at the underwater teens with a gay smile on her face, then turned to Kimber with her eyebrows raised and a "Who would have thought?" shrug of her broad shoulders. "I think I frightened that poor octopus boy away."
