  1. The Smith sisters blinked at that, almost in unison. Everyone saw Judy pale as Octoman whispered to the group, her hands clenched in front of her, and for a moment the air seemed to get considerably warmer around where Octoman, Daystar, and Watchdog were sitting. Reflexively, her eyes flicked to Leroy, almost shouting his name inside her head. Ashley, of cooler temperament than Judy, considered the situation. She was reasonably confident that Octoman was talking out his ass (maybe literally) - while the kid's celebrity crush on Chris was cute, it was pretty clear that if he knew a secret, it would be all over the school before anyone had time to say anything. "Hey, Other Benny," she snorted loud enough for everyone to hear, making sure she was positioned so Octoman could see her face. "Everything you've heard about me is true. So you'd better move out of our personal space, don't you think?"
  2. "...wait, that was real?" said Judy, sounding confused. "Ah thought that was just a prank thing, like that poster about Not Trying To Date Your Double." Ashley made a small, indistinct noise at the back of her throat. "That was real. Not just birds," she offered, trying to change the subject from the rumors that had floated around the kids from Young Freedom - she _really_ didn't want to have the conversation about Mark Lucas with her ward when she'd already had it with the Pentagon _and_ the State Department. "Well that sounds like fun!" offered Judy, "Ah hardly ever get to go out of doors anymore, and going to other dimensions sounds fun. Ah should see if Ah can sign up for that. What do you think, Mia, do you want to do something outside that isn't just super-stuff?" Ashley looked a little peeved at this idea but that wasn't an uncommon look for her in Danica's experience.
  3. Judy looked at Nick and Claude, then looked away - she'd been warned about those two by her sister. But there was something about Nick and the way he glowed to the sight she would never quite admit to having that made her curious. Not in the way looking at Leroy and sometimes Micah made her curious, but something else. She concentrated a moment, hands resting on her lap. Hey! she thought at Nick in words that came to him in a burst of electromagnetic energy, seeming to stare right through him when he looked her way. Can you hear me?! And then Leroy came in, and her attention was thoroughly diverted. Conscious of Ashley's eyes on her, she gave Leroy a winning smile and a little wave. "Hiii, Leroy." She didn't even frown as he took Mia's hand, she knew that was just his way. He is my boy anyway. Giving Ashley an innocent look, she smiled and looked up at the teacher.
  4. "Making a difference is what this city needs. It's why I ran for office, and I think it's something you all can do for Vibora." She smiled, then admitted, "And Sagrado Corazon is right - I did have reasons for bringing you all here besides a thank you." The smile she gave Persephone, then the others, didn't quite have Persephone's wattage, but was warm enough all the same - certainly warmer than the nod Woodsman gave Persephone. He shook her hand anyway, though, a firm grip in gloved hands that certainly felt all-too-human. The mayor paused, given Betsy's arrival, then said, "As you all know, Vibora Bay has been without a municipal defender until today - because I want to offer that role to each and every one of you. Your team has saved our city from both hurricane and disaster, and deserves our recognition. This offer is for all of you, but if you're interested in individual roles, we can work with you on that." She made a little gesture to her window, then said, "Like it or not, whatever roles you've played before, you're all in the public eye now. I'm nobody's idea of a superhero - but this isn't something you have to do alone."
  5. Oh would you now? Ashley bit her lip and considered her next words carefully. Good thing I leave this phone in the room when I'm not here. Are you sure there aren't any regulations about that, spacewoman? I'd hate for you to get into trouble on my account...
  6. "Us too!" Just behind the Atlantean boy came the Smith sisters, as usual one looking interested and the other tense. "Ah need to learn a little more about computers, since they're in my head most of the time anyway." She was wearing one of several dark blouse and jeans she owned, the gold cross around her neck her only serious piece of jewelry. She smiled at Heroditus and said, "Hi there, Ah'm Judy and this is my sister Ashley. Hi Mia!" Ashley, who had actually entered the room ahead of her sister, gave the Atlantean a suspicious look. "Mmm." She grunted in Mia's direction before she took a seat between Judy and the others.
  7. Ashley Smith was not a happy woman. She'd never been entirely pleased with the fact that she and Judy were the only girls on the Blue Squad - though at least it made their bunking down together a little easier. Except that Judy doesn't sleep anymore unless you make her! While she liked the outdoors, her interest in it was primarily as a tourist - not as someone taking the kind of orienteering and outdoor survival training she'd passed at Claremont and then almost immediately forgotten. It didn't help that her charge was at once largely invulnerable to the hazards of the outdoors - and very much vulnerable to them, even more than an unpowered girl would be. Ashley was in the rear of the group, scanning behind them with binoculars to make sure they weren't ambushed. For her part, Judy Smith looked downright content. Like her sister, she was dressed in practical clothing - scuffed blue jeans and a T-shirt, her long hair behind her in a neat ponytail, sunglasses protecting her eyes from the glare. But she looked otherwise composed - she wasn't sweating or uncomfortable in the heat the way Ashley was, and hadn't even been encouraged to drink water by their guide, who was evidently all too aware of her powers. She did fiddle with the big, bulky bracelet she wore around her wrist a few times, the black band a bit of fashion she didn't typically wear around Claremont, and looked...expectant? It was hard to say of what, though she had murmured, "It's so quiet..." a few times after their arrival here.
  8. We'll keep it simple - nothing too deep. There's one beach around here where you can actually bellysurf if the weather's right, you'd love that. She smiled, then added We can always just work on our tans on the beach afterwards. She thought about the woman she'd seen in the pictures on the beach with her, and for a vivid moment could practically smell the sunscreen and the sweat. After that, beach-side shopping. They try and squeeze you if you're from out-of-town, but I know a few places. I'll introduce you to salt-water taffy, and cheeseburgers. Salt-water taffy required a little explanation, she figured, and so did cheeseburgers for that matter, so she sent along images and links as she did it. You'd like shopping here; there's usually a crowd, but it's busy enough nobody's staring at you. She also wouldn't have to spend the whole time with her eyes in the back of her head to see if someone was trying to shoot her companion, which sounded pretty damn nice to her. After that, dinner and a show; maybe with a local band. I'll introduce you to the local alcoholic drinks... And then? A voice in her head asked her. Well, she reminded herself, this is just flirtation in text. it doesn't really mean anything. After _that_...? ?
  9. Ashley considered typing back the difficulty of having given one's word to keep a secret, and how one lesson she'd learned over her father's grave was that oaths made were oaths kept, even unto one's dying day. But wallowing in what had brought her to this point would hardly give her the escape she wanted. Not for the first time, she wished she and Judy had a room with windows that could be opened outside of an emergency. Hell yeah. I'm less than ten minutes from the ocean here, assuming no traffic, and the beaches are great. Pretty crowded, but if you go at the start of the day or the end, you can really have fun. Spread out a blanket, get a fire going, pretend you're the only people in the world. She hmmed for a minute, then added, If I was going to take you for a date by the beach, I'd take you to this nice beachside place that serves real fried fish with lemongrass like my bà used to make, then out on the sand. Her lips curled in a smile as she wrote I'd get to wear a two-piece suit for once! I haven't done that in over a year. I have a tankini with blue and gold colors, maybe we'll get you a matching one. Do you know how to swim in an actual ocean?
  10. Ashley's eyes widened - and if she hadn't been in the presence of someone who needed significant application of superpowers to go back to sleep, she might have shouted rather than hissed the words that subsequently escaped her lips. I guess the Galaxy's not as big as they make it look in movies! Come to think of it, it had been a long time since she had taken Claremont's elective on Cosmic Cultures, and unfortunately information about the Lor was probably pretty out-of-date at this point. Nice deduction, she taunted herself, what are you actually going to say? The urge to bail was strong, especially when the dragged-out minutes made the quiet of that blinking reply block look more and more awkward. But Ashley wasn't one to bail if the situation looked survivable, and maybe this was. Sorry, I was talking out my ass there. I still have job stuff. Why don't you send her a picture of weak Earth tea while you're at it? I'm working with this kid, she finally admitted. Her powers are going out of control, and her family wrote her off. It was easier to admit that particular government secret than lately I've been wondering if I actually like women, or if maybe that's just the lingering effects of working at an LGBT center for a whole summer, or if I'm just really hard up for dates. She already knew Claremont was a lot like being in prison. If I get distracted with personal stuff, it'll blow back on her. So I've got to stay on text. She considered a moment, then added, I'll send you my real face when I'm not glowing anymore. I've got about four or five hours till I'm not an active source of about three kinds of EM radiation.

  12. Ashley felt a stab of envy for the woman being able to work in a society that let her openly serve like everyone else while having abilities nobody else had. Sounds like the powers might be a sore spot. That's still pretty great. So tell me about the Hopper - how big is it? I bet the Scout Service doesn't get the big battleships. She considered a moment, then said, Do they ever let you stop by and pick up lonely Earthwomen?
  13. Will this be the year one (or more) Squad(s) goes to Leroy's home and ousts his mother? - that's what Judy would like! I also plan to have Ashley and Judy's secret come out.
  14. Ashley bit her lip and closed her eyes, thinking about Fa'Rua's words for a moment, then wrote back: You're sweet. ? You sent me two great pictures and I look like I glow in the dark. She thought for a minute, then wrote back: It used to scare me a lot, but I've had the knack since I was fifteen. The important thing was making sure it only happened when I wanted it. Images of her teen years popped into her head for a moment before she wrote back, I have enough control I won't set myself on fire with a pyrokinesis or something, but it can still suck. Once I copied a guy with an iron body and I got stuck to a f*cking magnet for an hour till it wore off. Shaking off that memory, she added, Teleporter, huh? That sounds scary and awesome in your line of work. Can you do it from orbit to a planet, or do you need to match velocities?
  15. Posting this for Electra's character Hologram, since she doesn't have computer access right now. Done By AA Hologram has 41PP to spend - this build spends them all. Drop the Trance feat, replace with Luck Replace her current powers with the below:
  16. Nice! That was an understatement. Ashley looked at the woman in the picture and imagined what it would be like to - okay, get ahold of yourself here! She was a little hard-up for dates, but that didn't mean she had to moon over every flirty picture she got. She took a few deep breaths and typed: OK. I do have powers. If I touch someone, I can copy their powers. Not their thoughts, not who they are - just their powers. That had, at times, been a sore subject. Okay, if she freaks out about that, it's better now than then. So the picture I'm about to send isn't what I usually look like. She glowed with an inner fire that made it hard to make out any actual details of her face beyond outlines; a brilliant gold energy around the hair, eyes, and mouth, skin cast a shade of deep, iridescent red, hair spread around her on the bed she was laying on like a divine halo.
  17. Aquaria pictured the results of such an embassy in a series of quick, vivid flashes in her mind - and supposed some of the superhumans she'd met could probably survive the effort. But then she realized what was the most serious problem. "With Lemuria lost, we have no kings and no masters save the Gods Below - so there would be no one to hear them. Atlantis can send its diplomats and sing of peace, and Surfacers can come and be fed by them, but there is no one to sing for us. Except me. Even when there is war, it happens because someone like R'K'Vll thought of a war, not because we were told. We are free." Aquaria paused for a moment as the illusions appeared, sniffed the air curiously, then said, "You are not magic. You are psionic. One of those helped my friend - she took the bad thoughts from her head and put good thoughts there. But she still has some bad thoughts, so it did not fix everything Have you ever done that?" She sounded curious, not fearful.
  18. That would be awesome. I've heard of COVIC but you don't get to go there unless you know people. Most of whom know me but don't like me very much. She smiled and added I'll go incognito - I won't dress like a superhero. Maybe I can borrow something of yours so I can fit in...? She added a wink, wondering if she was coming on too strong. It's just harmless Internet flirting. It doesn't mean anything. She considered a minute, then added, If I could shoot lightning out of my eyes, would that be a + or a -? ?
  19. There's being alone where you're by yourself, and there's being alone where it's just you and the person you want to be with. Put you on the bike behind me, get somewhere out in the country where nobody's staring at us. Bring beer, bring a picnic. Get you out of those stuffy spaceships and me out of this damn city for a little while. She posted a grin, and added, Everything you've heard about people from Earth is true. Hope that doesn't scare you off! She paused in her typing for a minute, then typed Where would you take me on she blinked, bit her lip, and corrected before sending if you were taking me somewhere?
  20. Richenda Barker was elected Mayor of Vibora Bay about four years ago - a longtime Democratic Party policy wonk in Florida who tries to walk a fine line between promoting social justice and attracting sweet sweet corporate dollars to the city. She has an uneasy relationship with Vibora's Police Department, possibly because she's been much more willing to listen to criminal justice reformers than the old-line 'boys in blue' are comfortable with. But most of that's hidden today as the heroes enter her office, as Barker's strong support of Vibora's superhuman community is on full display. She smiles and greets the various heroes, shaking hands or bowing as appropriate, and no wonder with so many of her staff present. Maybe she's not ready to go out in the limelight with the heroes of the day yet, but it's clear she wants to be on everyone's side. She makes sure to get everyone's super-names, since not all of the group that stopped the monster is part of the public record. And Woodsman is there. Riley was tense, like a jackrabbit in a room full of predators, but it's the mayor's staff, and police escort, who seem nervous around him. There's no getting a look at him in his hunting gear, crossbow slung over his shoulder and hatchet at his hip, body concealed by his jacket and face hidden behind balaclava, sunglasses, and camo baseball cap. Reach out. Be a team player. Don't live alone in your cabin like a goddamned psychopath. He grunts hello to the other heroes as they enter, having beaten them all here by the expedient of arriving as soon as the building was open as a deliveryman with a box, then changing into his costume as soon as he was in the men's room. Place is a goddamn sieve. Outside the big Greek Revival structure that is City Hall and the broader city government complex all around, Vibora is waking up to the aftermath of a major storm - but it could have been so much worse. "That's why I wanted to invite you all here today," Mayor Barker is finishing. "To thank you for your service on behalf of our city. Vibora had a hard night last night. We lost a lot when Freedman's fell. But even if our soul was bruised, our heart is still here - thanks to what all of you did."
  21. "Good call. Feds'll lock your ass up if you start counterfeiting with your powers - believe me." Ashley looked down at the bear she held and hmphed, putting it under one arm. "That's cute. Thanks." "Aw, isn't he sweet!" Judy hugged the bear and grinned at Mia. "This is real nice! You must be a real talented artist even without your powers. Are you gonna do any pictures for the musical?" Ashley assumed a face that distinctly spoke the words 'here we go' as her sister went on, "Ah heard Claremont's gonna put on a musical this year, and Ah was thinking of trying out. Ah used to sing all the time back home but Ah hardly ever get the chance here since we don't really have what you'd call a competitive chorus." "Probably means the musical won't be that great, either," commented Ashley. "Oh it will be fun!" said Judy brightly. "Don't be a spoilsport. Ashley's gonna be in it too," she confided, "but in a supporting role."
  22. Ashley was not quite as comfortable with Corinne's near-proximity as Judy was. "Hands off the merchandise," she commented affectionately as she stepped away to get them all through the line and inside the club. Inside the club, Judy looked a little intimidated by the crowd and stuck close to her friends - it seemed like she didn't have a lot of experience with places like this. "There are so many _colors_ in here!" she whispered excitedly in Corinne's ear. "Ah can't believe it..." She was looking around the club, eyes wide. "It's just the fields from all the equipment in here," Ashley commented, hanging back with the other two. "They must have a really amped-up sound system."
  23. Ashley pushed up her sunglasses. "I don't see anything," she said blandly. "Oh, you," said Judy, just a trifle nervously. "Nice to meet you!" She gave Mia a quick hug too; hot enough to the touch that she had to be more than a hundred degrees. "But yeah, Ah wanted to make crochet hats for everybody we know, and you were the first person that came to mind." "Four solid days on that thing," said Ashley with an affectionate nod towards her sister's work. "Oh Ah've got the time these days," said Judy, twisting her finger in her hair for a moment. "So what kind of things do you make, Mia?"
  24. "Deep Ones have raided the Surface and they have killed your people. And the Surface has raided my people and killed them. Atlantis is...different." Aquaria had sometimes wondered how relations between the Surface and her people would have been different if Atlantis hadn't taught generations of Deep Ones that anyone who looked like an Atlantean was an enemy of their blood who would kill them and burn their eggs in the burrows - but there was no point in such speculation. She considered her words carefully, then said, "When there is a...fight, it is hard to be the first to stop. Like when your people tried to kill all the ones with dark skin."
