Suddenly Frost was as he had been decades earlier, considering the possibilities at the death of Stalin. He hadn't seized his chance then, and the Soviet Union, and then Russia, was what it was and had ever been. "There would be difficulties," he offered. "Hong Kong is Chinese city now, not British; harder to control. Sin's allies would move against you too. They know where money is worth." He sat down before the board, and realized just how long it had been since he had played this particular game. But he could fake it, anyway. He swirled the whiskey in the glass, immediately beginning to drain the heat out of it as he held it in his grip. "Unless you could do some demonstration that showed them the city is yours, hmm?" He drank, knowing that the liquid would soon be on its way to Nifleheim. "Some proof that there is new master."

Lady Horus: is tired of fooling around. She has no idea where everyone is, though! So she'll do the boring heroic work of going through the rest of the building at super-speed, making sure everyone is out of the building. Wadjet: sees the fire stop and considers her options, then uses her grapple gun to ascend into the building's lower stories. Let me know if I can just narrate that, or if you want die rolls!

Frost considered the situation carefully, then made a little gesture to the young speedster to continue his patrols. With that, he stepped inside the tent following the third Scarab, keeping his eye on the developing crisis. It truthfully was of no matter to him if these people proved untrustworthy; a layer of mistrust had been frozen across where his heart should have been years ago. But if they were a threat, well, that was something that would have to be dealt with now before innocents suffered.

And then, they woke up. There was nothing particularly dramatic about it; whether they were curled up in a ball like Judy or tightly wound, teeth grinding in their sleep like Ashley, they bolted awake in the early morning hours to find cereal bars being passed out to the kids and the soft sounds of Minecraft from the television. The long night was over - and if Mardo, Victoria, and Anna were waking with tear-streaked faces as a half-awake Miss Lupine moved towards them, they were waking up smiling too. Children are funny that way.

Bedlam It's an anarch city, as you'd expect given its small size and general crappy aesthetic. Rumor has it that the Hammer, once one of the greatest vampire hunters in the world, makes his home here - but those are lies. Well it is true the Hammer was a vampire hunter once, but those days are long, long, long past. Now a Nosferatu of low generation and even lower Humanity, he sits in the middle of the web of hunter society, occasionally luring "proteges" to his lair, plying them for their secrets about the Hunter community, and then drinking their blood or setting them against his enemies as suits his fashion. A survivor of one such horrific betrayal escaped his clutches after the Embrace, and to her great good fortune was rescued by the Lady. Rumors swirl around the Lady; Brujah antitrib? Toreador? Rumors swirl in the regional Cainite community about her dark past - she was once Sabbat, but what else? What matters is that she's taken the Serpent (as she now calls herself) under her wing, and together she, the Serpent, and a young Ventrue of their acquaintance are going make sure the Hammer's nights of depredation come to an end. Rumors swirl that the Lady has a hole card in her game of Final Death with the canny old Hammer; that her boon companion Nicola is no Toreador but the last of the Tremere anarchs...

As they walked down the hall together, going the opposite direction from anyone else they could see, Judy asked Corinne a question. "Corinne, Ah have a question, and Ah know this makes me sound really stupid, but you're the only friend Ah have here who knows anything about this stuff." When they turned down another hallway, this one a set of rooms that were mostly vacant, Judy whispered, "Can we, uh, go to your room about this? Ah don't want everybody gossiping." Inside her head, even as she kept pace with Corinne and Judy, Ashley was imagining herself somewhere peaceful - maybe on her knees in prayer at the Catholic Church that had dominated much of her early life. It was pleasant to imagine being there, even though she'd fidgeted and tried to think about other things at the time, because that moral certainty seemed quite far away given what she knew perfectly well she was about to observe. Behind Judy, she looked faintly nauseous for just a moment.

Judy made a small noise in the back of her throat, and for a moment or two Veronica could tell that the girl wanted to say yes to that more than anything. But instead she simply put on that prom queen smile and stood up. "Ah'll have to think about that one, Veronica. Thanks again for your advice; Ah really appreciate it. If there's anything Ah can ever do for you, just let me know." And with that, she turned and headed away, her ever-watchful sister walking by her side. Neither of them were saying much to each other.- 16 replies

During the events of New Arrival "So...so what is he?" Judy demanded. "Some kind of demon walking around like a person?" She hadn't taken Ashley's news about what sort of powers her scanner had detected in Tyler well at all, and was now pacing the room with a nervous energy she'd hardly ever seen from the younger girl. "I don't know," said Ashley, shaking her head. This conversation, now back in their dorm room, had started badly and was going worse. "All I know is that he triggered the Damien alarms. Probably not a full demon, just someone infused with demonic power." "That's just..." Judy paced the room, clutching the cross around her neck for a moment, then looking to the bust of Jesus on her desk to give her strength. "Does that really make someone evil?" "I don't know," Ashley admitted unhappily, "I don't think they'd knowingly admit an evil student, but I'm under orders to keep you away from anything infernal or alien at Claremont." "Ah still don't understand it," she said, turning to Ashley as she stood by her neat little row of books. "People here know demons are real! They get inside people and do things! They've seen them do terrible things - we even learn about it in class! Why don't people go to church all the time? Why do they let 'em just walk around among them like they're nothing?" Danger! Danger, Will Robinson! flashed in Ashley's head for a moment before she replied, "...because they fought them and they won. When you've seen Fleur de Joie tie a demon up and throw it in a flowerpot enough times, they're not nearly as frightening." She spread her hands a little, trying to think of what to say. "It's not that they don't take faith seriously, it's that they've never needed it to fight demons. And when you add that to invaders from the Terminus, or monsters from under the sea, eventually it becomes background noise here in Freedom City. I don't necessarily like it, but it is what it is." "But they've been invaded a bunch of times, right? Every time somebody bad shows up from somewhere else, they're usually coming here." "Yeah, and I think fewer of those things would have happened if they were a little more careful about who they let in here," admitted Ashley. "But they have a pretty good track record about trusting people. Even demons." "Ah thought it was all made up," Judy admitted quietly. "Ah mean, Ah knew it was all for a good reason, to make sure people behaved how they should, but Ah mean..." She was silent for a moment. "Ah believe that Hell is real, and that sinners will have their part in the lake that burneth with fire and brimstone, which is the second death," she said. "But when Ah was growing up, my momma told me that God hated Halloween, and that demons had fooled grownups into thinking they were doing something nice, when they were really just teaching their kids to sin. And that's...that's crazy!" she exclaimed, spreading her hands wide. "But now that Ah know demons are real, Ah just don't know what to think anymore." Secret Service Agent Ashley George, who was definitely not Judith Claudia Cahill's older sister in real life, was silent about that for a long time, long enough that she was worried that the girl was going to slip away. She wanted to have a few words with the First Lady, and entertained herself with imagining what that would be like for several seconds. "You know," she finally said quietly, "I am not your mother, Jaycee." She usually didn't call the girl that even in private, but she knew it was the way Judy talked about herself in her head. "I can't actually tell you what to do. If you want to make friends with that boy, or talk to other people on campus, or do things your parents wouldn't approve of, I can't stop you. It's my job to keep you safe, not my job to make your decisions for you." "But you'd have to tell them, wouldn't you?" asked Judy as she looked over at her guardian. "If Ah was doing something they didn't like?" "Well, if you were getting drunk and crashing the Dawg, I might have to say something," said Ashley with a thin smile. "But if you want to talk to someone who has power from some other dimension, I'm not going to stop you. Personally I think superheroes are too forgiving," she admitted. "Everybody wants to be the good-hearted Centurion type, they forget what happens to normal people when they let their guard down. But I also think that if somebody made it to Claremont, especially if they're walking around safe with another student, that means something." "But what about your orders?" "I must have misread the scanner," she said with an easy shrug. "One bad read isn't a reason to shut someone out entirely. And if something does happen, well, we'll deal with that when it happens." Because if he does try and kill you, I will give up my life to make sure that doesn't happen, so that'll be the end of that. "Just don't try and date him, okay?" Judy burst out laughing at that. "Ah...don't think that'll happen, Ashley. Ah'll be lucky if he wants to talk to me. But Ah can at least apologize. Apologizing is good even if the other person doesn't forgive you."
-
"Homeschooling?" asked Judy hopefully. "Ah know lots of people who were homeschooled, back, uh, where we were from. A boarding school's a lot nicer than homeschooling, though, you'll really like it here." "Sure he will," said Ashley, who didn't sound anything like she meant it. "Judy, you and I need to talk about Damien." At the codeword, Judy blanched, looked at Tyler, and said, "Well...well, okay" She reached up and touched the gold cross she wore around her neck, eyes wide. "Ah guess Ah'll see you around, Tyler." But she didn't quite pull away, yet.

Over on a nearby bench, two girls were sitting by themselves; both bundled against the cold, one with pink-tipped hair and the other long and black. They bore a slight resemblance to each other, and of course Veronica recognized the Smith sisters readily enough. As Veronica and Tyler approached, one of them rose to her feet and headed for the new arrivals, followed quickly by her hard-faced counterpart. "Howdy!" said the girl as she waved at Veronica and Tyler. "You must be Veronica's newbie. Ah'm Judy Smith, and this is mah sister Ashley." She smiled at Tyler, her tan cheeks pink slightly from the cold, and folded her hands before her. Ashley, seemingly much less friendly, took out something from her pocket the size and shape of a large pencil eraser and waved it in Tyler's direction. Already frowning, her face darkened. Seemingly not to notice her sister's mood, Judy said cheerfully, "Welcome to Claremont!"

"We're going to shake the dust of this town off our feet and get very far away from Freedom and its heroes. Judy's going to go to college somewhere safe, and I'm going to keep cleaning up the streets," said Ashley with feeling. "There's a lot of scum out there, and it's gonna be damn easier once we're out of Freedom. Never should have ventured onto the Raven's turf to begin with." "Ah'll probably be a nurse," said Judy quietly. "Ah haven't had an eruption of mah powers in a couple of months, so if that keeps up Ah can finish my degree somewhere quiet." Her face screwed up at that, and she laughed sharply for a moment. "Maybe somewhere where Lulu's from, or some place like that."- 16 replies

"Oh, yes," agreed Aquaria in response to Trevor's question. "I don't want to spawn with him, I just want to mate with him! Maybe often, if no one will mate with him but me." It was a sensible question, and she'd always regarded him as a sensible sort of Surface-Man. "But if I mate with him too soon, he will think I am desperate and not want to do it again, or he will not want to mate with me yet because I have not stirred his blood." She took a breath thoughtfully and let it out, throat sacs bulging noticeably. "He does hero things and he does them by the ocean, so we could meet again there." She hmmed. "I could fly to where he lives with my space armor, but I would get in trouble if I did. I do not think I will be allowed to cross the ocean just so I can mate," she throated unhappily.

The ghost advanced on Pan, voice dropping distinctly - "You fool. Margaret is dead!" But just before Pan could go for his weapon, or for that matter before Watchdog could shoot him in the head, the ghost vanished - and so did the train speeding imminently towards Forever Boy. Gradually the horrors around them began to fade, until they were alone with a little girl in the garden behind an elementary school. "You must think I'm awful now," whispered Victoria sadly, looking from one hero to the other. Suddenly Judy slipped past Ashley, the latter looking decidedly alarmed, and knelt down in front of the little girl. "It's all right, honey. Your powers don't make you do bad things, your powers are a bad thing that happened to you." She swallowed hard, the fire wrapped around her beginning to die down too, and went on, "When we're all awake again, nobody's gonna be mad at you. It's gonna be a new day."

"What do I want?" Frost considered that question. He thought of women lost, and one fiery woman in particular; he thought of a hot wind on his face, and standing beneath a summer sun and truly feeling its heat on his skin. "I am very old," he said with a shrug, "and you know how very old men can be. Careless, forgetful, heedless of all save themselves. Tell me of the game that lies beneath your game, and I will play it with you."

"There are no giants nor traitorous lovers of women here today," said Frost coldly. "Often Frost has companions but in the end, there is only ever Frost." He leaned back against the crate he had marked as his own and yawned exaggeratedly, "I do seem to recall that bit of business of yours, now that there is mention. Wonder how long Sin will be behind bars this time? And what revenge he will take on those outside?" he inquired as he studied not the Hornet but his men. "You know, I remember in days of Great Patriotic War, when some of his men abandoned cause for Japanese, he actually had them bound to the earth and did the bamboo trick with them?" He clapped his hands together. "The right strain, and oh it grows through a man's belly! An unpleasant death and perhaps a bit cliched, but Sin has about him a certainty. Your leader is not first to think himself above such a death." He looked back at Hornet, and suddenly felt a great wave of distaste for petty men who thought themselves gods shoot through him. "You see it is a difficult question. You know I am here to cause trouble, but you know that if you fear to banter with me, your men will know you are weak, and that will be as if I had snapped you as frozen twig. So what's it to be?"

"Hm." Ashley looked down at the puzzle and pulled back slightly from the building. "Not my favorites." As she did so, Judy looked around at the group in the room and shifted uncomfortably, then seemed to focus on Corinne. "Hey, Corinne, could Ah talk to you about, uh, girl stuff?" She colored slightly as she rose from the couch, extemporizing, "Ah need some, uh, fashion advice." She smoothed her knee-length skirt and nodded towards the door. With all this going on, Ashley rose to her feet herself.
