February 1, 2019 Common room Kord Building 1st Floor Even hanging Valentine paper ribbons hadn't solved Judy's tension, so as she and Ashley headed into the first floor common room (the latter first, as always) she kept an anxious eye out for Corinne. I really really hope she is not Zenith tonight because I need her to be here for me and not be up her own butt! I have serious problems! Having never liked a guy before, liking two guys was a problem as serious as anything else she had to deal with on a day-to-day basis. While Judy took a seat on one of the couches by the puzzles, Ashley scanned the room - a couple of people playing video games, a couple of people reading, a couple of people pretending like they wanted to study, a couple that was going to get a lecture about fraternization if one of the dorm monitors came in...honestly pretty typical for Friday night. She was looking forward to later when she could settle in with a book. Judy had bought her the book by Paul Chappell for Christmas - it was a nice gesture even if it was mostly good for helping her sleep.

Sun Dragon "You love me?" The light and heat guttered like a candle, but didn't go out. Judy made a sound was like a sob. "You don't even know me. Ah never wanted any of this." The light was going out now, and so was the room around them, gradually revealing the Nicholson library. "They will do no wrong, they will tell no lies..." Judy looked up at Leroy, sitting beneath a short bookshelf for kindergarteners. "Ah just wanted a normal life. But I guess that decision got made for me too." She looked down at herself and made a small noise, seeing herself wrapped in clothes of fire and light that clung to her like a second skin. "And this is not how Ah wanted you to see me...Ah think Ah need my jacket back," she said, laughing weakly because she was too tired to cry. "Ah can't go help Ashley looking like this..." She didn't sound too worried about her sister. Forever Boy "My worst nightmare!" exclaimed both Watchdog and her ward, the former snarling it and the latter crying in terror adding tearfully that everyone was dead they killed everybody and she just wanted to go home! The Raven-thing took the light and shrugged it off, writhing with an unholy inner energy. "Look at you," it taunted Watchdog in a growl that was almost familiar to Pan. "How many more like this boy? Daddy would be so proud of you!" Then something else in the language Pan had recently heard Ashley swear in - "When everything falls down, you'll know it was all your fault - just like it always is!" And then it whipped out shadowy claws - and went for them both.

Now that I think about it, that might be too creepy - but Aquaria tends to assume that all Things that live below the sea are alike. ?

Esperanza coughed - but didn't look at Anna or Jason. She'd picked the argument, nobody else - and she'd liked what she heard. She smiled at Sekhmet, politely. Anna locked eyes with Set - and suddenly realized the godling knew. Well of course ya idjit, she thought quickly, yer sittin' here with yer girlfriend next to ya at Thanksgiving like it's some kinda Norman Rockwell painting. She wanted to get up and run right out the door, cursing herself for her weakness, but instead she reached down and squeezed Nicola's hand. She locked eyes with Set as if to say "What are you gonna do about it?" Esperanza jumped when Set started poking her, then scooched her chair away. "What! Jesus Christo, are you some kind of puppy?" She looked at where Set was looking and said, "What, cause they're screwing? Yeah it's like The Kids Are All Right in here half the time." She took a good scoop of the cranberry sauce and dumped it on her plate; it looked like she'd already had quite a bit. Suddenly her eyes lit up as she turned to her mentor and said, "Wait, do you usually not-" "We do not discuss who we are screwing at the dinner table," said Anna firmly. "You'll have to excuse my protege here, she comes from what my mother used to call circumstances." Esperanza stuck her tongue out at Anna. "So...how ya been, Set?"

Sea Devil struck her trident against the floor a few times, sussing out whether or not these creatures were the masters of this place or mere servants. When they made no song the way living creatures would, she made her decision. "Asad, keep your distance," she croaked to him, voice sounding clear as a bell beneath the deep waters. When that was done, she focused on the robotic creatures bedeviling them. "Behold!" she declared again. "The might of our power!" She struck her trident against the ground and declared, "You have forgotten the embrace of your mother! Let me show you it!" And then something new happened - around Aquaria, the sea seemed to boil briefly and then out of nowhere there were tentacles, long suckered tentacles that erupted from everywhere around her and began grabbing onto everything they could reach. Walls, fish, robots, and dragging them somewhere else - someplace that had _teeth_. "You will sing at us!" Aquaria bellowed. "Pay attention!"

Sun Dragon There was no sound from inside except weeping, it didn't seem like Judy could hear him. When Leroy did enter, he found a scene of carnage. He didn't recognize the room, but he could tell it had once been grand - with fine furniture and beautiful art, all of it now carbonized to a cinder. There were bodies here too, curled in rictuses of agony; what might have been a man and a woman together, and two women. Ages and more than that were impossible to determine; most of their flesh had been blackened and burned away. It was easy to tell why. The thing in the middle of the room had once been Judy perhaps, but now was all fire and heat, a burning candle of pure light that glowed so brightly that it nearly blinded Leroy again just to glance in its direction. He could feel the heat on his skin, though, hot enough that it was uncomfortable just being in the room. He could hear the sound of distant explosions, and gunfire, echoing through whatever place this was supposed to be, through the broken round mullioned windows along the wall. "I prayed, Leroy. Oh, how I prayed..." Her voice was like the fire too, deep, resonant, and inhuman. "But the God who sees the fall of a sparrow couldn't fix me! Couldn't keep me from becoming this...thing!" The light around her blazed hotter and brighter. "And now they're all dead! They're dead, and everything's gone because I'm an...alien thing! This isn't a nightmare! This is the future!" Forever Boy Forever Boy followed the sound of gunfire and stepped out into the Nicholson playground - and into another scene pulled from the pages of nightmare. There were bodies here - Children. Teachers. Soldiers. And, from their costumes, superheroes. Some had been shot up against the wall, others torn to pieces by super-strength, others caught in the burning remnants of what had once been a large, people-moving truck. Watchdog was here, standing with guns drawn between a child he recognized as the little Russian girl Jack had befriended and something else a black phantom shaped vaguely like a person but towering some ten feet high, eyes glowing red and voice oddly resonant. "All your lies exposed - two worlds in collision! Deceiver - what will you do then?" Watchdog raised her guns and fired on the creature's midsection. "The best I can!"

Steve would have wept, if biology allowed for such a thing. "We have always been so. And no takebacks. I love you." He stepped around the table with a smooth economy of motion, picked her up with casual ease, and planted a long, lingering kiss on her lips. Perhaps in some objective assessment of reality it wasn't perfect - but it was still the best. When they were done, he set her down, trembling slightly for reasons besides fatigue. "We will decide what we want to do..." He smiled a little. "A few people have seen the ring," he admitted, "but all of them discreet. They had plans, but I thought something that was ours was better."

Watchdog's head turned towards Judy, suddenly taking rapid steps away from the door. "Wait, we need to-" The doors blew off their hinges. Because Leroy was standing closest to Judy, he heard her small, soft "No" at the scene of carnage within - the sounds of gunfire, burnt wood and charred bodies, and with a cry she raised her hands to shield herself from the sight within. "Ahhhhhh!" she screamed as she burned, an incineration that went beyond heat, beyond light, as clothes, skin, and hair burned away into an impossible outline of fire and heat and light. Watchdog caught her by the wrist and suddenly Judy erupted in a wash of celestial heat, blasting Watchdog away into the darkness around them as fire and a blinding light erupted over them all! When they could see again, the library doors were closed again - but they could hear the sound of weeping within; and burning.

Of course, they now were left with the thorny problem of where exactly to go. With Victoria their only certain case of a student inside the nightmare, they decided to head for her favorite part of Nicholson - the generously-appointed facility library. Watchdog kept up their marching order as they went, this time putting the 'injured' Leroy back with Judy. If Judy was angry at Leroy for running off, she didn't show it, instead clinging close to the boy with her hand on his back. "Ah don't like this place one bit," she commented, "but A guess nightmares aren't supposed to be nice places." Shifting uncomfortably, she was wiping the sweat from her brow by the time they reached the closed, darkened library doors. "Why is it so hot in here?" she asked as the cool night air inside the imaginary school clung to everybody. Watchdog, Miss Lupine, and Forever Boy were working on the library doors. "These aren't supposed to be locked," said Miss Lupine doubtfully, the wooden doors rattling against their hinges, "but it looks like the fire doors haven't been deployed. If either of you have the power, breaking them down might get us inside..."

"Yes. Now, and forever, I am sure." Believing in forever had been, if anything, even harder than making the decision about what sort of ring to buy. He opened the box for Gina, showing the band inside, a gold band set with diamonds cut close against the metal. The gems were cut small enough that her fingers wouldn't catch in machinery, and the diamonds themselves were made by science rather than naturally - but he decided she didn't need to know that just then.

The lizard-boy turned to the group, his mouth bloody and eyes full of anatomically impossible tears. "But I'm a bad monster!" Mardo's exaggerated teeth, much larger than when he was awake, were dripping blood. "I'm gonna hurt people just like I hurt my brother!" He cried, hot tears, and all but collapsed into Forever Boy's arms. But Pan could feel the nightmare around them fading beneath his illusory display, the horrific scene giving way to the pastoral display he was putting on, and gradually the little boy's tears and snuffles began to fade. Miss Lupine was right by Pan's side, patting Mardo on the back. "It's okay, Mardo, everything's going to be all right. Your brother loves you and he knows you love him too. Remember the picture he drew of the two of you playing?" Mardo nodded against Pan's shoulder. "Think of that picture, and the two of you opening presents together..." Gradually, the nightmare around them faded, faded, and so did Mardo, smiling, with a softly voiced "Thank youuuu..." With the bassinette gone and the illusion faded, Leroy realized he was not a weak, helpless, useless baby about to be eaten by a monster. Judy, sympathetically, was bent over where he was at ground level, pulling the bonnet off his head and wrapping her sensible denim jacket around him. "Are you okay?" she asked him. "Is Dio here too?" Ashley put her gun away and nodded in satisfaction, getting the 'rules' of where they were from the scene. Without a trace of her usual hostility, she put her hand on Pan's shoulder and said sincerely, "Nice work."

Sea Devil considered for a moment, then decided that stealth was obviously out of the question now that they'd blasted the inside of the gorge. She decided to handle this as she would wild Atlanteans, tribespeople who could well be won to her side but could also be truly savage enemies. She took a deep inhalation of burning sea water and bellowed, "Behold! We have come among you!" She struck her trident against her armored palm, sending further noises echoing through the underwater space. She swam quickly for the top of the great tower, stopping by the side of the great disk at its top. "You bring war to the sea!" She struck the side of her trident against the great disk, then gestured to indicate her companions. "I am Hydra's champion, and this is a mighty son of the Reef, and this, a powerful Surface dweller!" She struck her trident now, point-first, right into the heart of the disk. "Turn back, or face our wrath!"

"Wait, you...oh, I see how it is!" Ungrateful or not, Nick's actions seemed to have taken him by surprise. "You send your brainwashed lackey to get the book, because you think anyone who worships the Old Ones needs the master's touch!" He sounded a bit like he was trying to convince himself, while above them the rain gradually began to slacken, leaving them standing in deep puddles beneath grey skies. Catching the book was a near-run thing - Ms. Thursday wound up having to go rather deeper into the pit than she'd wanted. It was cold down here, and wet, and she could hear things...moving in the wet dark below. Then the book spoke to Ms. Thursday. "...I'm free! Oh, thank the Powers Above and Below! Do you have any idea what would have happened to me down in the bottom of that pit?" The voice in her head that began the moment she grabbed the book sounded...sounded almost exactly like her own! From outside the ruined building, Aquaria's voice boomed, "IT IS NOT FOR SURFACE-MEN!" and then a distinct human voice shouting back, "Not all men!"

"Maybe so," conceded Watchdog, "but taking hits is what I'm here for." The team moved out, down a dark, deserted corridor towards the sound of a crying baby. "That's the nursery," commented Miss Lupine nervously as they headed past physically and spiritually warped children's pictures with unreadable labels and class pictures distorted to look like something demonic. "It shouldn't have anyone in it at this time of night...but of course that doesn't matter now," she added, her voice a soft whisper. They opened the swinging, hospital-style double doors to the nursery, and walked into a scene of horror. The bassinetts were empty, all of them, but soaked with blood and gore. Empty or not the sound of screaming babies assaulted them as they headed inside, and as they watched something small, scaly, and toothed shuffled its way slowly towards the last occupied bassinette, where a familiar form was trapped. "Oh Jesus!" screamed Judy, stepping back and covering her eyes, while Ashley coldly and expressionessly leveled her gun.

They talked Freedom City for a while, places to go and people to see, while Miss Americana went about her work. Steve was not particularly charismatic or sure in his speech but he knew a great deal about Freedom City and the sort of places (and establishments) that wouldn't look too closely at a customer who clearly was not the baseline norm. Occasionally he'd chat with Miss Americana during moments when Delta couldn't speak, making plans for what Delta had learned was called a "dinner date" here on Prime. When Miss Americana's work was done and the machines were finishing their calculations, Steve turned his back briefly to let Delta dress again. "If we clear our calendar for this week, all will be well," he offered to Miss A. He just needed to finish writing that tactical report - or did he? "So of this visit, Delta," he inquired. "What more do you seek?"
