"Both. They hide from what they do not understand - but they keep the people safe," she admitted begrudgingly. "I cannot bring this there," said Sea Devil unhappily. She explained what she meant by driving her trident into the ground, hard, its tines disappearing into the pavement with a faint crunch and pop of electric energy from her suit. "But they cannot keep me out," she said with great absurdness before leaping up into the air and over the top of the gate. She gave a short, quick bellow as she went, singing the counterpoint to the song of the wards so she could make her way through unscathed. On the other side, she ducked her head to the ground, then croaked triumphantly, "I can smell them! They have been here, with meat! A pig! Oh it is alive..." With Sea Devil on the other side for comparison, it could be clearly seen that the grass inside the compound was distinctly the wrong shade of color, a shade of lime green that was no natural grass's shade. - Reaching out his senses, Nick had the sensation of a wooden barrier beset by termites - the wards around this place did indeed still stand but they had been worried at and worried at over the course of some time, until a strong enough blow would send them tearing down. Even now something not far away was worrying away at those barriers, a slow, gradual pinprick of a ritual that for all its weak power was another chink in the complex's armor. He judged it to be near the center of the place, or what had been its center before all this began leaking out.

With a soft sigh, Judy stepped into inspirational fiction where Micah couldn't see her face. I don't know most of what he was talking about! Ugh, I'm so stupid! She looked at the books before her, not quite seeing them, and then looked beyond - luckily the place was small enough that she could call out to him without making a scene. "Ah like Star Wars too," she said out loud, which certainly was true. "My mom..." she swallowed. "um, mah momma used to say it was a great way to show the redeeming power of good even for a secular audience." -
Steve looked levelly at Erik for a moment, then smiled slightly in return. "The words are as hard to hear as they are to say," he said with a nod. "But I have said them." He reached into his pocket and pulled out a jewelry box; snapping it open to reveal a band inlaid with diamonds. "The gems are buried in the metal so they will not catch while she works, and they are the gems of science, not raw earth and suffering." The ring certainly wasn't cheap, but Miss Americana could probably afford quite a bit more. "I also know," he added, "that privacy is key. There will be no public embarrassments. But beyond that...you are the friend I have who knows of these things - as a man does them." "Ladies can do them too," said Yolanda, an echo of a conversation that he knew had been had around his sister and her partner. "Right, tio?"
-
Down in the alley, Lady Horus didn't even bother removing her helmet - instead simply barging in through Dr. Thorne's backdoor and forward into the office where the dual-bodied detective was hard at work. "Zounds!" she boomed with her arrival, a flash of brilliant solar energy briefly shining in the office as she made an appearance. "This town is made mad, crude asses! What light can there be among heads so stuffed full of darkness?" At least the language...whatever it was...hadn't interfered with the helm's ability to translate her speech into the weird faux-Shakespearean English the Egyptian pantheon spoke in. "Thorne, what causes this and how might we smite it?"

Behind him, Steve kept up conversation - somewhat roughly, remembering the dialogues they'd both have heard from the Nightmare Nurses and things like them. Better to be frank than overly reassuring. "The recent invasion awakened many long-neglected fears in the citizens of Earth-Prime - but you will find plenty willing to greet you as an ally against the forces of the Omnicide." He paused reflectively, then admitted, "You should use a disguise. One can tell oneself that fear in the minds of the citizens is good - that they should never look on a denizen of Nihilor as a friend." He looked down at the scarred backs of his hands before saying "But it can be a hard thing to see their terror."

Judy looked back behind them for a moment, but then shrugged and focused on the interesting question of Micah. "Ah've been reading Narnia again since I got into, uh, that tabletop game that Adam runs, it's pretty fun." She considered that she probably shouldn't tell Micah that she'd tried loyally to read her father's books but found them much more boring than his speaking voice, and her mother's book on Christian child-rearing was a lot less strict than how she'd actually grown up - which had annoyed her when she read it more than she wanted to admit. "Finding books that have, um, good values can be hard to find." Twirling her fingers in her hair, nervously she wandered over to Inspirational Fiction. Watchdog was too cool to shop at a place like this - and Ashley's tastes for entertainment weren't the sort of thing you'd like to see expressed in a suburban big-box bookstore anyway. So she leaned close to the wall, casually moving closer to stay in the vicinity of Judy and Micah. -
Lady Horus hit the ground hard enough to crack it, her three-point landing somewhat marred by the hands clapped to either side of her head. I'm gonna die, she thought distinctly. There was no way she was making it back to Freedom City or Los Angeles in time, and there was no way a Bedlam hospital would have the know-how to treat a strange metahuman. I'm having a stroke and I'm gonna die here in this alley in the middle of this goddamned city - Thief, stop-. She pulled at the helm, cursing, but couldn't quite manage to dislodge it. After all these years I'm gonna die in this stupid alley, and I want to - CLOCK QUEEN Wait, no, I need to go back and try and find Esperanza - she looked up at the sky, the Bedlam winter cold against her skin. Make something - ANNA! Anna slumped against the alley wall and decided she was going to die talking to a god's ghost, sure, why the hell not? If you're gonna tell me to get right with Ra, honey - You are not having a stroke - some foul spell has set words against themselves in this city! Taking divine reassurance for what it was, Anna had a few more words with Nepthys, then took off, leaving a rocketing trail of solar energy behind her - she only knew one magic specialist in Bedlam and she knew this was an emergency. She took a moment to call Wadjet first, though; a little glad to find that Esperanza was as annoyed as she was. By the time the goddess landed in the alley behind Dr. Thorne's office, she knew her sidekick was on her way.

"Yes," said Steve, putting his hand behind his head for a moment. "I know your approach to these matters was outside the boundaries of Earth-Prime's typical..." He fell silent, which was not actually common for a man raised with the rather florid speaking style of life in the Terminus. After a moment's pause, he took a breath. With great effort, he locked his eyes on Erik's and said, "..I have purchased an engagement ring..." "Yes!" said Yolanda, pumping her fist. "I knew it!" She got up and hugged Steve, which even with the muscle she'd been putting on lately was still quite a sight to see given the differences in their size and builds. "You should do it at Christmas!" she added helpfully

Ashley looked backwards automatically when Danica hesitated, meaning she for a bare instant was stuck on the sidewalk while her charge was headed inside another store. Dammit, not in the! It wasn't that it was her job to take care of the tortoise totem but dividing the party always had its share of risks. Oh well, she thought as she headed inside the bookstore after Micah and Judy. Despite the occasional nightmares where she'd been transferred permanently to guard Claremont, it wasn't her job to take care of super-teens in general - just one in particular. The agents in there know what they're doing. Inside, Danica found a jewelry store that was unusually crowded - and with an older clientele than she'd been expecting. A man in a suit and two women in casual tracksuits were standing together in front of the display counter, one of the latter with binoculars, and she had a feeling that a conversation had abruptly stopped when she pushed open the swinging doors. "Oh, uh, hello," said the young man behind the counter with a cheerful saleman's smile, "how can I help you today?" He did indeed look cheerful enough, despite a short, military-style haircut and a lean swimmers build that looked a good deal fitter than your average store clerk. "What would you like?" -

Whoops, think you may have forgotten this one, @TheAbsurdist! @Portia Labiata, Idon't see anything wrong with it minus low exotic saves, so I'll go ahead and get an APPROVED on there now. -
Dunwich It was pouring the rain when the Pale Horse deposited the trio outside the former site of Dunwich Prep, the sort of thick, freezing rain that'll mean mud for days and an apocalyptic freeze if the weather gets any colder. Aquaria had stayed secure inside her armor on the ride up, which kept her warm and wet but meant she hadn't eaten anything for a while. She was peckish and irritable as she hopped out onto the street outside the sealed gate, and more so when she saw what she saw. The local powers-that-were had sealed the site's main entrance well by Surface standards; a high metal gate like a prison's had been placed across the main entrance to the property, and something metal had been placed atop the stone fences around the edge. This close, Aquaria could feel the spells the Surface-Men had placed around the place like a buzzing inside her head. She made a small noise inside her armor, an uneasy croak, and studied the arcane signs that the Surface-Men had engraved into the metal of the gate. She ignored the rain, and in fact opened crevices in her armor to let it enter her suit, the better to replenish fluids that were getting a little tired after lubricating her skin during the trip up. She liked the bracing cold; like the very bottom of the sea. There was something amiss here, something more immediate than the old songs of glory this place had forgotten. Someone with a song of their own had breached these walls, and recently. Opening her armor wider, though still not enough to show her face, Aquaria snorted, trying to inhale scent, but it was all covered by the driving rain.

"Mechanics make better money than some people with college degrees. You'll probably be pulling down more money than half the-" That was entirely more pleasant than Watchdog usually was, but luckily Judy stepped out of the changing room with clothes in hand, freeing Ashley to walk with her over to the counter and pay with money from a wallet she pulled from her pants pocket. With that done, they were out on the mall's sidewalk and headed for the bookstore. The pattern of their travel put Ashley closest to Danica (except for her charge), keeping pace with the Segway as they headed down towards the double-open doors of the big-box chain bookstore. For her part, Judy was quite happy with her purchase, hauling around the bag with her new dress (and shoes, too) with a pleased look on her face as she kept pace with Micah. She could tell he liked her; and even if it was just harmless fun, she liked him, too. He was a bit like Leroy, she supposed, a boy her mother would probably not want her to bring home. "So what do you like to read?" she asked Micah as they headed inside the bookstore -
"None that you could do alone," Aquaria croaked in a not-unfriendly fashion - though it was hard to tell. "Come, I have given your names to Janet at the parole office," she made a few words there sound carefully memorized, "so I have two days to help you. Before I must call her again, as long as we are beyond the state line." Privately Aquaria didn't want to be gone anywhere near that long, not when she'd be so far from good water and her friends, but there was no reason to dwell about that now. She hopped up and down uncertainly, then said, "I My name for fighting is Sea Devil. But my name for your people is Aquaria Innsmouth. I can show you my face if it will help you trust me. But you may not like it."

"The cause was sufficient." While Yolanda gave Erik the little wave that was a sign she was in a good mood these days, Steve stroked his bare chin and said, "Erik, I would like to speak to you about your marriages." He shot a glance at the children, who weren't paying attention, and at Yolanda, who actually smiled before going back to her phone. Well no wonder, since she'd been asking about this for some time. "It is not an inappropriate question." He sat down the glass of cider that he'd been nursing and said, "The beginning. How did you accomplish the actual...transition?"

Winter 2018 It wasn't exactly the Interceptors' Christmas party - but there was a tree up and lights in it, and there were children watching Christmas movies, eating cookies, sword-fighting with boffer weapons, or truly doing all of those things at once. It was a well-spent afternoon, anyway. Steve was sitting by himself on the couch in one of the upstairs bedrooms, just having finished a discussion with Yolanda about how these movies were just for babies that had left him feeling pleased at her emotional progression, when Erik entered the room. Despite the half-dozing children on the carpet by the couch (Yolanda on her phone) and the Santa hat perched incongruously on the Omegadrone's bald head, his face was serious as he asked "Does the evening go well?"

Ash peered at Micah from behind her glasses for a moment, her face expressionless, then looked back at Danica. "There's all kinds of jobs where you don't have to wear a stupid costume and you can use your powers, I heard. That must be nice-" They were interrupted by Judy, stepping out of the dressing room in a dress that went just a bit below the knee - about as liberal as Ashley had seen her charge go. The lace pattern and antique blue colors fit Judy's coloring and personal style, and Ashley nodded her approval before Judy popped back into the dressing room to change back into her regular clothes. "How about you?" asked Ashley of Micah from the security of her sunglasses. "Could make good money with what you've got." -
"We shall meet her inside," said Steve, stepping out of the car as a way of showing Delta they had nothing to fear here. The sun shone on his bald head, his brown skin polished bright where it wasn't scarred. And it was scarred in many places. They weren't that far from the main building with its distinctive A-frame shape, but entering through this entrance would get them inside the Archetech facilities without sending Delta through the lobby or exposing him to the psychological risks of walking through their front door. "I will not abandon you inside," he offered, suddenly thinking of how an encounter like this would go in the realm both men were from. It was additionally true that if Delta did prove to be a hostile invader of the facilities, the Omegadrone would be in an excellent position to remove his limbs.

Brek-ek-ek..."I know that a place so touched by the gods is no safe place for Surfacers," she croaked, after another long, considering pause. "Especially if the walls are thin there, and some sing the songs of other places." She'd heard other things too - of how the heroes of Freedom had closed in and made sure that no one would dare worship the Gods Below in the presence of their younglings, but she knew better than to say that in front of these people. "I will help you. I have helped before. If you go planning to kill the gods, child, you will fail," she croaked in a buzzing bass that was no threat but was perfect sincerity. "You go to silence the voices of those who would wake them." Aquaria knew (and had known since the invasion) that the time had come when the stars were right and the first would be last and the last would be first - but she would go on living her life with those she loved until she was called, and that if the gods were called by Surface-Men to a place that was not theirs, the consequences would be disastrous for them all.

"I ask myself that question every goddamn day," said Ashley with perhaps more sincerity than she'd intended. Blinking a moment, she readjusted her sunglasses and said, "Somewhere far away from all this. Where Judy can go to college and I can take out the trash." The first was true enough but the reality of the latter was hopefully going to involve the Presidential Protective Detail and maybe some goddamn Scotch while she was at it. She looked Danica up and down and said, her tone softening a little, "What about you? Any plans?" She could think of several different agencies that would love to get Chelone on their payroll. -
"She...is my woman," replied Steve, his voice just as even as if he were talking about the weather. Even with his armor retracted and his skin exposed, he knew it was hard to believe he could have a mate - especially if one was familiar with the Terminus. "And beyond that, she is a woman of uncommon character, who faces foes greater than most." Which was all true, though details beyond that were certainly not Delta's business. With that, their car reached the Archetech compound and headed quickly inside, passing through a high, double-layered security fence before circling around the main buildings of the facility to head around the back of one of the many large, grey and white 'boxes' that made up much of the institutional architecture of Earth-Prime. They stopped in the sunshine, albeit the sheltered sort; alongside an open metal door, it would be better for Delta to enter the building on is own.

"Then you are to be commended on your integration into Earth-Prime's technological network," said Steve neutrally, having overcome his earlier embarrassment. "Be mindful that there are many in this realm with abilities that give them mastery over that network." He didn't need to explain Delta's need to be concerned about being compromised technologically - it would have been on par with explaining to a vermin that it needed to be concerned about predators. It was a concern he knew only too well. He turned his head and peered outside at the trafficked, all-too-human world of Earth-'Prime' (for after all many worlds called themselves that) that lay beyond the window. "We will arrive at Archetech shortly. Do you have any questions?"
