"Run!" declared Mustache and Big Nose (those two being the only one of their group that had avoided the tendrils from the door - the latter being the group's leader.) They ran for the rear fire door and soon were gone, their unhappy parters shouting angrily after them. "You dumbasses!" yelled Glass Eye as the steel door slammed shut. "You think Devil Ray's gonna let you come back without his armor?" "Geez, Jerry, shut your stupid mouth!" yelled Scarface in response, the bindings pinning him down having both his legs and his arms, forcing him to twist his head to a painful angle to glare at his counterpart, shooting a meaningful look back at SFX as if to suggest that perhaps shouting that they were working for a notorious Crime League member was a bad idea!

The impact of the blow was like an explosion under the water, sending forth a wave that briefly sent up a curtain of silt that blocked all from view. By the time the silt has been dispersed by the magic of the golden sign, Leviathan stood by the floating body of the unconscious Ikatare. Being unconscious underneath the waves was no particular problem for a species with gills as well as lungs, though Naia did despite her injuries take the opportunity to catch him before he floated to the surface. Meanwhile, Aquaria and Leviathan were the heroes of the hour! Strangers though they were, the tribe of Deep Ones hooted and gamboled in their honor - blowing horns and cheering, stamping feet and driving tridents against metal and rock to make joyful noises! Aquaria and Leviathan both had crowns placed on their heads, twisted circlets of worked metal that just barely balanced there, and soon some of the females of the tribe were smearing Aquaria with a goop that looked black underwater to Leviathan's eyes. "It is a rare thing, to celebrate in song," croaked Sees-in-Darkness as he stroked over to join the couple, "but we have seen Dagon and Hydra's power at work today. Water-Bearer, Leviathan, we thank you for coming among us." "It was my pleasure," said Aquaria, who for her part was practically beaming - her eyes big and bulging, throat sacs billowing with emotion as she spoke. She let herself stand close to Leviathan, and pretend for a little while as she remembered the way his words had rung out under the water. "And ours. I am a better swimmer than my mate; once you can move, I will guide you to the currents away from the city." She didn't say aloud what they all knew - with all the noise, moving would be sooner rather than later. As she spoke, one eye flicked to Naia, who was pulling the still-unconscious body of her mate inside the sunken Surfacer wreck. More work to work yet.- 46 replies

"It's nothing," said Citizen, shaking his head. "You were lost and now you're going to be found. Somebody did that for me when I needed it, so I want to make sure I pass it on." It was, all in all, one of the things he believed in the most strongly. He was silent for another few moments, lost in cybernetic thoughts. "Yes, it's wonderful how this area is so, uh...unspoiled!" He kept up some not terribly convincing chatter about nature for a while, then said "Okay, here's the plan. I've contacted Hologram, and she's going to be waiting for us in a place in Freedom City with a lot of visibility but not much people. That way the two of you can talk about your powers, you won't have to worry about the people around you, and we can help find you a place to go. What do you think?"- 25 replies

It was a good trick - but these guys were harder to scare off than that. "Jimmy, you and yours take care of this! We'll meet you back at the lair!" said the one who was evidently the leader of this group, gesturing to three of the other thugs who immediately went for SFX! They were of a type, this gang, their costumes too similar to each other to be anything other than a deliberate design choice - even their personal appearances looking awfully similar. With short hair and muscular, tattooed forearms, they looked like ex-servicemen or cops, though of the three facing down Alexa she could make out one with a mustache, another with an artificial eye, and a third with a long, hook-shaped scar along one cheek. But right now they were going for her! Glass Eye reached for her with thick, meaty fingers that just missed grabbing on, while Mustache's attempt to feint to her left left him grasping only hair. Scarface was more successful - snapping open a tonfa from his too-tight belt and cracking it fully against her sternum, the shock vibrating her like a struck bell but not actually hurting her in any meaningful way. These guys were strong, maybe, but they didn't have the kind of firepower to take her on!

Riley kissed Robin in public, basking in the moment - then did it again. "That's 'cuz you're so nice," he said with a grin. "And 'cuz I'm so cute." Maybe it was just the holidays, or maybe it was just the freedom of the tow of them being out together without worrying about any judging looks - well, not worrying too much, anyway. "Let's go get some-hey, thanks!" With the order placed, he decided to saunter over to Klara and greet her properly. "Much obliged," he said, looking at the taller woman. Glancing around, he recognized Moe from Claremont and nodded to her in a friendly way, then ran his fingers through his own teenager's goatee. "Merry Christmas!" -

"Apologies," said Citizen, who wasn't entirely sure he believed Moe but figured this wasn't the right time for an argument. "If you are that mechanically inclined, there are plenty of people in Freedom City who might find a use for you. My mentor Miss Americana," an instantly recognizable name for anyone with an interest in technology in Freedom City, a beautiful paragon of all-American genius, "is always looking to hire people." Miss Americana was another person that the young mentat could be around safely, he mused, given that Miss Americana wasn't really 'there' at all. He looked down at the river as they went, and commented, "It still amazes me, the rivers here. In places I've visited, all this would be dammed up or underground, providing power and water to cities all around," he gestured to the banks of the river, which were mostly unspoiled this far inland. "the towers as high as we're flying now. It's beautiful here," he added, knowing people on Terra usually didn't like his views on urban development.- 25 replies

December 9, 2017 Freedom City Maritime Museum The Waterfront Alexa Xieng's homework had taken her to the Freedom City Maritime Museum, a small private museum that discussed the history of Freedom City's shipping industry. There was actually quite a bit of history to see here, much of it going far beyond the age of heroes that had begun in the late 1930s. In her walkthrough so far she'd passed everything from a birchbark canoe like those used by the Lenape Indians who'd once lived all up and down the New Jersey coast to the cunningly hand-crafted model of one of the Nantucket whalers that had docked at Freedom's ports from the late 18th century on. The museum's tour guide, an older man with a white-streaked beard and a merchant marine cap, was obviously much more eager to talk about this part of Freedom's history than the "new wing." "Don't get me wrong," said "Captain Craig" a little awkwardly as he glanced into the newly constructed wing of the museum, its metal-walled rooms a sharp contrast to the rebuilt Victorian brick that made up most of the rest of the museum - which had once been a shipping baron's house, a century or so before Alexa's birth. "We certainly support Freedom City's hero population - but there isn't much to say about their maritime history. We discuss the Deep One invasion and the Atlantean one last year, of course," he went on as the two of them crossed the central foyer of the museum to the "hero wing", "but you can find that on your local websites. But don't let the curator hear me say that," he added with a wink. "We do have some fine artifacts preserved," he added, "all of them donated to us by the Freedom League. Behind Captain Craig, peering through the doors of the new wing, Alexa could make out the newer exhibits the man was speaking about - the Deep One invasion of 2011 being one of the main centers of attraction. In fact, a nearly intact Deep One suit of battle armor was in a glass case at the center of the room - but a half-dozen seeming-'tourists' were in the process of opening the case! The half-dozen men, all of them in Hawaiian shirts and Bermuda shorts that clashed oddly with the chilly weather outside, were intent on their work - and hadn't noticed them yet.

Riley felt his heart skip a beat as Robin hit the ground. Knowing a superheroine when they saw one, the guards went for their weapons and leveled them at Nighthawk, only Woundmaker's raised hand keeping them from opening fire. The Sandersons moved protectively to shield Raina, her father's hands glowing red and her mother's eyes the same in a familiar surge of protective magic that was all the more _unfamiliar_ from the breath of smoldering power Raina could feel from her parents. This close, with their magic up, that unwholesome feeling returned again - whatever Raina had detected from outside, whether it was the portal or something else - it was coming from her parents. "We're in the middle of a business transaction here, honey," said Woundmaker, his slightly muffled voice thick with sarcasm. "So why don't you put your hands on your head and come over here?" he inquired of Robin, drawing a large pistol he wore at his side. "Apologies for the interruption, Ms. Smith," he said politely to Peyton, "uncontrolled metahumans are one of the downsides of operating on Earth-3." "What _about_ that portal?" Riley demanded, trying to draw attention away from Robin without actually admitting he was with her. His mother caught his tension, and he could feel his eyes on her. "Aren't you worried about...infection?" "They've done it before," said Peyton, shaking her head. "The other end is in my office. They've come in and out there, and elsewhere, maybe twenty or thirty times that I know of. Our Forest likes home soil," she admitted. -

"Now honey, that ain't right neither." The scene changed - and they were back in their regular clothes. Well, Phaedra was. Phaedra was exactly as she usually was, a beautiful princess between Heaven and Hell. And Cathy was old, impossibly old, long white hair cascading on the pillow behind her, her aged body shriveled and perpetually cold, wearing only high-tech silvery hospital gown. Freedom City's best medical practices of the late 21st century meant the machines inside her gown kept her alive and broadcast her vital signs to the monitoring stations in the next room, where cybernetic nurses waited to pump in the latest in high-tech drugs. But even as the 22nd century approached, death was death and age was age. "Every love story ends with somebody dead. Nature of the beast," said Keith philosophically. -
"Curses, my ankh!" declared Lady Horus, her arms thrown wide as Witchfinder ripped the ankh right out of her hand. "Without it, I am-" She put her hands behind her back and came back with two ankhs, each one blazing with the fury of the avenging sun, just as the ankh in Witchfinder's lash vanished like a candleflame being blown out. "-HORUS REBORN, FOOL!" She punctuated the last two words by leaping into the air, arms spread wide, and smashing the butt of her swords into the sides of the Witchfinder's head enough to make it ring right through his armor. She leaped backwards, calling to her newfound ally, "Lo! It seems this blaggard doth protest too much!" "

Figuring out the logistics took a little work. But the motorcycle was easy enough for Citizen to carry. Moe was a little harder, but only just. Opening up some compartments in his back gave him access to metal discs that he gave to Moe to attach to her clothes, highly magnetized metal that easily clung to Citizen's own ferrously conductive flesh once she climbed on his back. After a few minutes to adjust themselves, the two of them were up in the air. He kept things low and relatively slow at first, not wanting to alarm his passenger, flying no higher and no faster than one of the Terran civilian single-engine planes that he could so easily outfly if he was so inclined. They kept their route over the Columbia River, glittering blue-brown water beneath them. The height meant Citizen was losing some of his radio connectivity, but he'd already sent out several important messages. "Does the bike need to be dropped off with its owner?" he asked Moe delicately, a thousand feet or so above the river.- 25 replies

Though he (along with his companion) were in similar company to Moe, right down to the Xs on their hands, Riley had gotten to Morley's early that Christmas. "C'mon!" he was declaring as he pocketed a fairly substantial wager from a disgruntled-looking guy with about six inches of height on him. "Who'll step up and have a friendly wager against the reigning champion?" Riley wasn't usually this relaxed in public - but what the hell, it was Christmas and his best girl was at his side. The short sleeves on his plaid jacket showed off his muscular arms, while an innocuous hand-knit red and green hat perched on his closely-shaven head. When nobody seemed interested, he headed back to join Robin at their table, leaning close to plant a big kiss on her cheek. He had egg nog and he had swagger, and he had the prettiest girl in the bar. If he was back home the egg nog would have had liquor in it - but on the other hand it probably wouldn't have tasted very good. "Don't worry, baby, you treat me nice, I'll share some with you," he grinned as he set his money down on the table. Most of the money was probably going to go towards one of Robin's missions at the end of the night. But that was still some time off. -
Lady Horus will attempt to Bluff Witchfinder into thinking he has her ankh- -5 as Move Action http://orokos.com/roll/574639 = 25 with the penalty. Well, that's pretty good. Gambling that'll leave him flat-footed, she'll power attack for +1 http://orokos.com/roll/574640 = 29! OK, that's a DC 30 Toughness save. She'll apply any knockback straight down.

"Hah-hah, don't worry," said Sharl reassuringly, gesturing for emphasis as he spoke. "I'm not going to just fly you somewhere and drop you off at a school. I'll take you to a place with mentats who can talk to you about your powers and help you control them - after that, we can figure out where you're going to go next." He'd also have to call her parents, of course, but that was something that could wait until he got her back to Freedom. "We're not in any hurry. Do you like the show Supercrime!? It's the one on the Discovery Channel, with the hosts Fast-Forward and Hologram, the speedster and the mentat." For his part, Citizen loved the way that show had disproved so many Terran superstitions and false beliefs over the years. "- 25 replies

"Oh yes," said Citizen, as conversationally as if she was discussing winning a cheerleading contest, "I think I heard about that." There was no point in dwelling on it if he didn't want to freak the kid out, but even in Freedom City, that story had gotten out. He made a point of taking a breath, then said, "The best thing for me to do is going to be to take you back to Freedom City. There are people there who are experienced in dealing with mentats with uncontrolled powers - especially teenagers. It's a half-hour flight for me, and if I put up a magnetic screen, you won't suffocate along the way." He smiled a little. "How about it, you up for a trans-continental flight? I can take you to a place that serves great breakfast."- 25 replies
