  1. Citizen greeted Emerald Spider at the docks in his usual fashion - coming in fast and high, fists pointed straight ahead as he came in on a whirl of magnetic energy that blurred the air around him for a moment before he stopped just above Emerald Spider's location. With the sun behind him and his long coat rippling in the breeze, he looked like a man from another world. "Hello, Emerald Spider. Thanks for coming out." He smiled for a moment, his usual cool confidence, but then seemed to grow more serious. "Let's go - I'm going to go pretty fast in case anyone is watching us, so hang on." He scooped her up like the Centurion carrying a princess and took off, as usual veering up to dizzying heights above the river before swooping back towards onto the Archetech compound. They landed near where he'd left, by the roof access of the Archetech West building he'd left behind. "Sorry for the rough ride," he apologized, setting her down. "It's been an interesting week. Do you know anything about a company named Ming Xi Visions?"
  2. A lot of teenage heroes, stung by the taunting, would have stayed there and tried to get into a fist-fight, or maybe a hatchet-on-really-big-sword fight with the Sniper. But Woodsman wasn't like other teenage heroes - not only had he heard much worse from his fellow students at Claremont, he'd also seen the horrific consequences of people whose discipline failed them in a battle. And this is a real battle- Jesus Christ, those aren't rubber bullets! He rolled fast and came up with his crossbow, deciding that discretion was the better part of valor as he ran right past his surprised antagonist. A grapple line fired into the ground below gave him a way down - and with his hands on both ends of his hatchet, he slid downwards to ground-level where he rolled behind the damaged getaway car and promptly (as far as anyone could tell) disappeared. The sniper joined him a moment later, looking around in bafflement for a split-second before joining the fight, Spurning her sword, she made a one-handed grab for Hyperactive that almost got the speedster, the armored woman showing an uncanny (but not quite uncanny enough) ability to anticipate his movements even at super-speed. "You're already hurt, Texas, and we're going to hurt you a whole lot worse once we catch you." Her sidekick went in for the attack too, his extendable staff (which he'd kept despite the swipe his way from Mannequin) snapping out at the ready but not quite making contact. "You really want me to break your kneecaps because of something that _never happened_?"
  3. Woodsman really wishes he'd kept his smoke bomb arrow. Move Action: Uses his Speed and Super-Movement (i.e, a grappling arrow) to retreat to street level Standard Action: Hides! That's a DC 30 check to spot him, which neither of their antagonists can make New round! Sniper realizes that Woodsman has scarpered! Move Action: She makes her way down to ground-level too. Standard Action: She'll try and grab Hyperactive bare-handed - http://orokos.com/roll/496433 and miss! Spotter pulls out a staff and tries for Hyperactive too, since he's the one taking the hits. http://orokos.com/roll/496434 = a miss, okay. Hyperactive will be up as soon as I post IC.
  4. That does miss, I'm afraid! And don't forget you're staggered - you can hit the guy because he's in melee range, but you can't take a move action. You have either a standard or move action a round. Okay, Mannequin is now up, sorry about that, Vorik.
  5. Lady Horus put her hand atop Set's and smiled winningly. "No man will carry the power as he did, 'tis true. But I am no man."She patted her hand reassuringly, a gesture that was almost maternal - perhaps sensing she hadn't yet reassured the shapechanging god. She also took a moment to be glad she had the insulated shorts on under the kilt because it was _cold_ in Wisconsin. "I have warred against powerful foes before - and been their queen. If new foes come for me here in the lands of ice and snow, let them come." Because if it's the old ones again, I am screwed.
  6. Okay, that's two - if I can get three fresh volunteers, we'll start by April 1.
  7. "Now that you're making friends," snarked Nepthys quietly, "I will leave you to your work," before vanishing back into the Helm with a faint ripple of diamond-studded darkness. "Keep thy tongue in thy head," chided Lady Horus gently. "None know - and none can. You know why better than anyone." The many, many reasons why no one could know who Lady Horus truly was passed through her mind faster than she could blink. "I am pleased thou do not gainsay me here, Set." She had reasons to resent the godling, perhaps - but Set's approval did make what had to come all the easier. "Those above share your fears about the future," she admitted, her voice deepened and echoing from the divine influence of the power she'd borrowed. "There are few who would bring me to Freedom in a crisis. Thou art one, and thy guardian is another." Ankh in hand, she tapped Set lightly over the heart.
  8. Comrade Frost was all discretion on the way inside the dojo, his parka and jacket making him look like a Floridian or some other inhabitant of warmer climes in the dying days of a Freedom City winter. Once on the stairs, though, he dialed 'up' as he usually did when someone other than Talya or Ace was about - as he especially tended to do when he was going to be around the Espadas children. They were only periodically impressed but then American children could be cold. By the time he was knocking on the apartment door, he was all smiles, a gift bag dangling from his left hand and a chill in the air. When it was Talya on the other side of the door, he dialed things down a bit - especially when he saw her face. "Talya, my sestra, I bring gifts for your children." He handed her the bag, marked with the Champions logo. "And myself for you. Hello, Erik!" he added with a wave.
  9. Steve looked uncomfortable for a moment (a look so familiar on his features that the lines in his face seemed set like stone), then set aside his popcorn. "A dryad-entity would fit the pattern of those recruited in the service of the Terminus - and a being with your abilities would be a powerful tool in the service of entropy." He would not call the unnamed woman an Annihilist until he had no other options. Saying such a word out loud, even in speculation, would have dire consequences - if he named something an Annihilist, it would suffer an Annihilist's fate. He paused, and considered comfort - something he could barely manage with the woman who shared his bed every night, much less his friends. "You should not blame yourself," he finally guessed. "It is possible for any being to fall to the forces of the Terminus."
  10. Attack vs Mannequin http://orokos.com/roll/493570 = 35! She's getting a lot of mileage out of that thing. Okay, that's a DC 25 Tou save with the Autofire, Vorik.
  11. The slash sent the man to one knee, knocking him down but not out of the fight. "You stupid bastards," he hissed at Mannequin and the still-dazed Hyperactive. "Who do you think you're messing with? We're gonna send you back to the Freedom League in pieces!" Up on the roof, Woodsman took another shot at the armored sniper as she prepared to descend to the street level below, the bolt lodging at a seam in the armor over the shoulder. He heard her curse, and then, "What is this, itching powder, kid? Call me when you have something that can actually break my skin, maybe then they'll let you at the big boy table." She squeezed another burst of ammunition from her assault rifle, this time in Mannequin's direction, and ran for the cover Woodsman had taken after firing in her direction. Holstering the rifle on her back, she pulled out instead a sword! "Let's see how you fight one-on-one, boy!"
  12. "Emerald Spider - it's Citizen." There'd been no sign of Citizen in and around the city for the past several days - not unusual given his habit of disappearing off to Freedom City periodically. "I need to consult with you on an important case." There was no point in transmitting classified data over Terra's information network, not when he already suspected that his personal information was currently in the hands of who knew what around the Emeralds. At least my long-term memories would have been blanked when the robot transmitted the death signal - so nobody's going to be showing up at Gina's house or the Sanctum. Not that anything good would happen to anyone who did that, of course. "Are you free? I can pick you up, if necessary."
  13. "In these fallen days, we are all shallow reflections of what we once were, brother-husband," replied Nepthys. "Just as this age is a shallow reflection of what was." "Oh, well, thou has said it!" replied Lady Horus, sounding deeply skeptical of her erstwhile patroness's gloomy outlook. "I wore a crown e'en before I found the Helm - and now I am heir to the powers of a god!" She hesitated a moment, hand on that lovely chin, then actually interposed herself between the two deities. She was moving with kineticism as she spoke, driven by internal energies and some internal discomfort that had her gripping the ankh tightly with both hands, again holding it by the join between loop and cross, rather than more properly by the loop. "Hark, before you two do fall to calling each other strumpet and popinjay, I would have words with Set." She faced Set directly, looking down at the younger-looking god, not for the first time wishing these sandals came with heels. "If someone took up my brother's name and garb, I would want to strike the fool down with my two fists." She made a little gesture at herself. "But I am hardly passing for the Horus-that-was - nor disgracing his sacred name. I rob no tradesmen with the ankh, I fight with the goodly people of the city instead of its many lawbreakers, I walk the sunlit path even when the darkness is tempting. I _knew_ the Horus-of-old - I looked in his eyes and heard his words. He treated all with respect and compassion, and never once did his godly wrath, or godly passions, harm an innocent. If no one else is going to take up the burden of his sacred mantle, why not me?"
  14. Sea Devil closed her eyes tight beneath her armor and knelt low, spreading her three-fingered hands wide against the ground, slow, sonorous breaths letting her keep her composure. "They will come and scatter your people. Burn your temples and slay your chiefs." She swallowed hard, then smoothly rose to her feet again, bouncing slightly on her large, spread-wide toes, all of her covered head-to-toe in armor that glowed a faint iridescent green and looked nothing like a Deep One's at all - if you weren't paying attention to the body plan. Deep down, it occurred to Aquaria in the dark place that sometimes whispered to her when she was alone and the thoughts of what she had lost, that this was the perfect opportunity. From all she had seen and heard, the mighty defenders of the Surface could triumph over the armies of Atlantis, especially when the tribes Below moved against them. Everything could be different, but. "But there is no war." There was a grief around the corners of her words before she focused again, her voice a mechanical, booming croak that gained in confidence as she spoke. "Atlantis has planted its seeds among the surface; they have no enemies here. We must find what hatches here today." Without another word, as soon as their guards let them through, she joined Volcanic and the other females in bounding their way towards the scene of battle.
  15. Oh, I'm sorry, I thought I'd posted here! Okay, let's see. Toughness vs 25. http://orokos.com/roll/493158 = bruised and dazed again! Left alone with the Sniper, Woodsman takes a shot at her. http://orokos.com/roll/493159 = 27 He hits! Okay, let's call that his poison bolt - that's a DC 16 Fort save vs. a Dex Drain, and a DC 21 Toughness save. http://orokos.com/roll/493160 = 29 passed the Tou save http://orokos.com/roll/493161 = 13 Fails the fort save! Okay, she is down 3 Dex. To a mere 19 Dex. oh boy! Okay, let me post IC tomorrow
  16. "How articulate," commented Nepthys in tones as cold as the desert night, arms crossed over her chest. "This incarnation certainly has the same gifted tongue I remember." "Nepthys, do not rush forward an ass under the pelt of a lion!" demanded Lady Horus, taking this as an opportunity to intervene. She didn't quite get between the couple, though, not when she knew that one couldn't be hurt by the other. "Thou promised good counsel with thy 'amicably parted' spouse, not petty bickering. I can handle such things well enough on my own without godly intervention." Nepthys made an irritated noise that Set had produced from her too many times. "Very well, Horus. Set, my companion and I are shadows of the Heliopolis of old - the Heliopolis that you knew in ancient days. We have empowered this woman so that she might do our work in these modern days - and redeem her own corrupted soul." "My soul is as pure as it ever was," said Lady Horus breezily, titling her half-hidden face towards Nepthys, "but I do carry burdens in their names. It was a sweeter draught than what I had before me 'ere we met."
  17. Sorry to hear that, Bluefish! Good luck with what you're doing. You're always welcome back here.
  18. Let me handle this. Are you sure about that, honey? I know Set better than any god or any mortal - if you would keep him from our purpose, none is better-suited than the Lady of the Temple. But you two have a history - and it ain't the best one! Maybe you should let me talk to him- A bargain was fairly struck and fairly made. Will you keep it? ...fine, but if you start giving him the business, I'll have a few things to say! The conversation inside Lady Horus's head lasted only for a moment or two - before a new voice spoke. "There is much you fail to understand, brother-husband." A form shimmered to life beside Lady Horus, one intimately familiar indeed to the one who had once been Set the Destroyer. But had the Nighthawk, her dark skin dappled with stars and wings folded behind her back like a cloak, had such an aspect recently? "Does even a shadow of Heliopolis belong to you now?" Lady Horus shrugged, almost apologetically, and gave the former couple space to talk.
  19. They stared each other down - and suddenly the lady Horus erupted towards Set with fantastic speed, mystic ankh gleaming with divine power. Set readied herself for divine combat even as it all happened so fast - but the false Sunhawk plunged down directly behind the quartet of police officers! With her free hand she disarmed one mustached officer by means of grabbing the gun out of his hand and squeezing, then backhanding him against his cruiser door. She leaped in the air for her next target, striking him in the back with the ankh, then stopping his sudden forward descent by catching his face with her knee. The third got a blow across the torso that sent him spiraling over his car, just as his partner came up with a shotgun! Lady Horus stared the other woman down, ankh glowing with solar power. "Foolish woman, do not toy with me." The fourth officer lowered her shotgun, stared at Lady Horus - and began tending to her partner. It had all happened so fast. Whirling, Lady Horus stalked towards Set. "Lo, Deceiver, now that these sty-born boors, blockheads, and louts will not spill the blood of the innocent in their petty rage, let us indeed bandy words. I know you a sibling of Horus-born, but my doings here have a purpose - and are blessed by those of Heliopolis." That is a somewhat dubious characterization. Oh c'mon, it's close enough!
  20. Ah, just to clarify, Vorik, the spotter has already moved down to ground level - do you want to move down and try and hit him, or do you want to hit the sniper?
  21. Set's mighty display of divine puissance, albeit somewhat attenuated from days of old, was certainly more than the average citizen of Bedlam had seen! Lacking experience with superheroes, most of the people in the park fled in terror, parents scooping up their children and even young bloods running away (though a few of the members of that gang Set had been speaking to earlier were now hanging around the edges of the park). The flashes of light went on and on, and after a few minutes it was becoming increasingly clear that Lady Horus, whatever abilities she did or did not possess, did not have the park under 24-hour watch. Trying again produced more light, and more noise, and now people in the crowd were taking pictures and filming her - it was clear whatever was about to happen was going to happen on film. Just when Set was beginning to consider a new strategy, some ten minutes into her display, two things happened nearly simultaneously. First the police arrived - the Bedlam constabulary having far less patience with superpowers than their Freedom counterparts. Two of those big, old-fashioned squad cars skidded to a halt near the entrance to the park that Set and Sekhmet had used, the officers boiling out with weapons drawn. "Freeze and cease your use of metapowers! This is your only warning, slimeball!" There were four officers so far, service revolvers out and aimed, but more would be on their way soon. An instant later, with a sound like thunder and a flash of solar-bright light, Lady Horus appeared in the inside of the park, landing with Set and Sekhmet between herself and the police - from the way she cracked the asphalt of the basketball court when she landed, wherever she'd come from she'd come _straight down_. Up close the helm was certainly different than the one Horus had typically worn, completely hiding the upper part of her face, and standing taller above her head. In a slight crouch, platinum blonde ringlets hanging below her shoulders, she held an ankh in her left hand that glowed with visible power, her reverse grip holding the ankh by its head rather than shaft. The three were frozen in a tableau for a long moment. Ah, jeez! I knew this was coming one of these days! Don't worry. I know how to handle Set.
  22. Lady Horus watched the superheroes enter the museum, those she could see, anyway, and was reminded of other times and other places, when she hadn't been so different from the mortals entering the room. Except I knew how to have a good time! She figured they were probably all here for the same reason, since they'd surely have been preparing if this was the ambush she'd honestly been expecting for months now. Better do something to get their attention! To most of those watching she seemed to simply appear near a subtly marked door labeled Museum Staff Only, one positioned between the men's bathroom on one side and the Egyptian wing on the other. "Lo, thou wastrels!" she called, "the office of our quarry lies within! Come hither!" She took advantage of divine strength to open the door without bothering with the old-fashioned lock on it, then zipped down the corridor to Dr. Stoppleman's office. "Stoppleman! Your rescuers are here!" And with a mighty blow of her mystic ankh, the door was cleaved inward!
  23. "There's no rush here," said Sharl thoughtfully, still feeling a little awkward taking a leadership role around so many older scientists. He was still glad he wasn't actually in charge of Archetech West - and not just because of all the additional work it would mean. "If there are bad guys out there, they'll probably expect me to fly out and avenge my death or something. Let's do it this way - you use your gadget to try and get at the data they hacked out of our systems while I contact Emerald Spider to see if she's heard anything about Ming Xi Visions." Of all the heroes in Emerald City, he liked her the most - maybe because she was another scientist and engineer. He nodded. "After that, I'll get into the system and probe them myself. If they're used to dealing with Terran technology, they won't be ready for me to come at them through their systems. After that, well, maybe they'll turn out to be innocent. But it won't hurt us to look. Thanks, everyone." Brusque though he could be, he knew better than to be disrespectful to the people who helped keep him together - and who did so much for Gina's company. While the Archetech staff got to work, he walked away to the window to call Emerald Spider, looking out over the northern "Emerald City". Using his internal radio communicator meant he didn't need to use a Terran device at all - it was a simple matter to tap into the city's communication systems.
  24. As the spotter dodged Mannequin's attack, Woodsman popped out of cover to fire off a bolt at the injured man, the sizzling bolt flashing out and away over the street below as it whizzed past the man's head. Riley did not speak in anger in the middle of a fight but he indulged in some cursing inside his head as he dropped back into cover, snapping open his weapon to switch out the bolts in the magazine of the auto-firing crossbow. What the hell do I need, a bolt with a damn radar on the head and rocket on the end? Meanwhile, the sniper still hadn't let up in her efforts to target Hyperactive, chasing him up the side of the building with another spray of bullets. She paused, ducking down behind the railing at the end of the building - and when she came back up, she had a grenade fitted to the high-tech rifle she carried! Before the others could shout a warning, she fired, deliberately missing the speedster by shooting ahead of him. Used to dodging bullets, Hyperactive stepped the wrong way - and was blown off the side of the building by an explosion that immediately deafened him. No longer in contact with a surface, he fell, hitting the roof of a van below with a sickening crunch. The two assassins spoke for the first time now, or rather the spotter did as he limped to the edge of the roof and grabbed hold of a grapple line already attached there. "Ah, geez, he landed on the car!" And with that, he slid below.
