Looks promising!

Aquaria padded out onto the gangway and down onto the grass - and she did get a reaction from the crowd. From some of the humanoids in the crowd, especially those who seemed to particularly bear the blessing of Dagon and Hydra, there came a faint rustle of murmuring - and near the edge of the crowd, exclamations. "The Dark Mother comes! She comes!" Aquaria blinked hard, trying to process what she was hearing, an impressive sight indeed given the sheer size of her eyes. She picked one of the speakers out of the crowd and leaped to her side, fearlessly vaulting into the crowd of humanoids. She blinked at the female and cocked her head inquisitively. "Who are you to speak of the Dark Mother?" "I am Kee'lee - I am your servant before the King and Queen in Yellow," croaked the female, bowing her head as she should to show submission. She hadn't the green skin nor the extended limbs, but in the bulging eyes and gaping mouth, she at least had the look of Aquaria Innsmouth. "I am thrice the spawn's spawn of the Dark Mother."

Suddenly, the bucolic scenery broke up - quite literally, as like shattering glass. Mark flinched, visibly, whatever door he'd reluctantly opened shut firmly in his face as a brief moment of discontinuity in some hazy white space was met by the sudden return of the interior of the toy shop. Quirk was back inside, or rather, just coming back inside. It had been the slam of the door behind him that had shattered their shared vision. The baby Mark was holding was now crying. "It's not fair!" declared Quirk, ripping off what looked to be a flower pinned to his lapel and throwing it across the room. He was all dressed up now in an ill-fitting suit and tie, and from the scenery behind them it was now dark. "She said she's just not that into me, and she doesn't think we should keep dating once she's away at her new school. This SUCKS!" he opined, looking like he wanted to cry. He looked very much the sad thirteen-year-old boy.

"An EMP discharge directed through a portal would have a similar effect. Or a fissile weapon." Steve's scowl was monumental as he contemplated what had nearly happened - and what he had nearly led them into. "Once that is done, I suggest the dimensional frequency be recorded and remote observation continued until this universe reaches its final fate. I am not needed here." There was much to talk about - but little to talk about here in front of all these people. He turned and headed out of the room, forgetting about the two people he'd brought with him as allies. After all, he'd have to speak with both of them later.- 51 replies

Some time later, Riley lay on his back, his breathing returning to normal, body pressed warm and tight against Robin's. There really hadn't been much room in the tent - but that was okay, they hadn't needed very much. "That was great," he told her sincerely, his skin still tingling all over as he hugged her from behind. "Really...great." They'd have to get up soon and get dressed, he'd have to pack up the tent and store it again behind one of the ventilation shafts up here, and they'd have to make their ways home to their respective beds. But they didn't have to do anything just then but lay together, and he was content to let that go on a little more.

As it turned out, what happened next was actually a thorny legal problem. "A government-certified psychic has found that neurologically, this is not the Bryant Halliday who has been held here since 1970," Bolt told them reluctantly some time later, the new Cline baby now in Anna's hands. Maybe Anna had missed the childhood of her grandson and hadn't been the most attentive for her own son, but she was holding the baby carefully in her arms as the superhero spoke. "And this facility certainly isn't authorized to hold an infant. Normally, what would happen now is he would go into the fosters system - probably the regular system, since by all accounts Bryant Halliday had no superpowers. Unless someone from the family could..." He looked first at Anna, who had allowed herself to be listed as Bryant's common-law wife in the papers, and was met by a bark of laughter from the former Clock Queen. "Oh no, honey, no." Anna looked down at the baby, then handed it to the nearest person, who turned out to be Thoughtspeed. Crossing her arms, she looked first at Bolt, then at her son. "I ain't takin' care of a baby that...any baby, much less that one. Not me." Paige felt her husband's mind touch hers, a question - they'd talked about a third child while she was still young enough, weighing their busy career, part-time hero work, and dangerous enemies versus how much they both liked being parents and how damn good they were at it. He wasn't going to make any commitments till he knew what she wanted - but she could tell what he was thinking easily enough.

Consolidated "Happy Birthday" Megathread
Avenger Assembled replied to cosmicarus's topic in Archives
Thanks for all the birthday wishes, everybody. -
Over in the other room, Peyton was in fine form. You could imagine her giving a speech behind a barbed wire fence, analogue megaphone to her lips, shouting to a heavily armed crowd in fatigues. "Oh, I understand someone manipulated the system, but it's the failure state of that system that I'm worried about! Claremont told me that my son would be protected, that he would be safe, and instead he was locked in a room with some half-trained teenagers who nearly cut his head off! What the hell is going to happen to those children, anyway?" "The members of Next-Gen will be undergoing special training this summer," replied Callie Summers, whose tone had hardened noticeably after she'd taken a seat behind her desk and Alan Archer, still in his hospital room, had signed off some minutes earlier. "They will not be eligible for the volunteer squad for a period of at least six months, after while they will need to be recertified by the school." "Oh, they'd better!" declared Peyton. "God gave me two sons, Ms. Summers, and I'm going to do my best to make sure they both grow up without anybody murdering! I don't have anything invested in protecting your pocket-sized hero sandwich here, and if you can't protect my boy, so help me God I will take him home and I will raise him myself!" At that, Riley rose to his feet, his face tight, and said "Scuse me," before turning and heading straight out the office door.

Dimitri answered Talya's question first - with anyone else, he might have taken this opportunity to defend himself. "Is, ah, magical discharge effect. Not uncommon with newborns born amid magic." And death and pain and blood - yes, thank you, Lady Hel, I remember well enough. "Let me just see..." He stepped outside and looked over the corpses, or near-corpses, of the fallen, the expression on his face falling from friendly and warm to flat, distant, and downright - cold. He walked from one to the other, his boots crunching in the faint coating of ice that he left behind him with every step. By the time he reached Min's side, his presence was chilly indeed. "There is nothing you can do for these unfortunates, Willow," he told her, his voice largely (but not entirely) free of his Russian accent. "Go see your family. I will handle situation."

"Through sheer dissonance!" declared Frost with a wave of his hand, looking delighted at his audience. "I know of Throne, young lady, but there are Hells deeper than it, with flames more bottomless - this was one such, one so foul even its name cannot be spoken in this place. The invasion produced such a sheer cosmic dissonance that when armies of such Hell retreated, even their existence passed from the minds of people. Which was good because city was full of corpses, was pretty grim from all I hear." He shrugged. "This sort of thing happens in city like Freedom - is right on barrier. Generally not to worry about." He hmmed. "Why you think your teachers not tell you this?"

Mark stared silently at the home's exterior wall for a long moment, a look of profound loss on his face, before he reached up and took Nina's hand with a firm squeeze. When he stood up, just as Nina's mask was snapping back down, he was all business, and all smiles. "Good to see you, Dad!" He said with a big smile, still carefully carrying the now-awake and alert infant. "Yeah, things are just heating up out here, ha-ha-ha!" He joined his 'father' by the grill. "I don't know if you've met Monsoon, but she's my fiancee. We're going to be married as soon as we overthrow her father, ha-ha!" "Y-yes," said Monsoon from behind her mask. "But I'm sure you know all about that. These are our friends, Bonfire, Punchline, and Leviathan." "Well any friend of my boy's is a friend of mine, ha-ha!" said Rick Lucas. His handshake was firm, his smile golden, and was there anything behind the simulacrums eyes as he shook everyone by the hand. It was downright impossible to tell. "It must be somebody's birthday, because we've got a clown!" Punchline got the biggest smile of all. "You know any jokes?"

Dawn of the Cyber Empire IC
Avenger Assembled replied to EternalPhoenix's topic in The Emerald Cities
Citizen hesitated briefly. Sharl had been in this position in the past - both of them. "I can handle it," he said to Elsa with a reassuring tone in his voice, standing beside her and raising his shoulders to take the burden of the plane, electromagnetic power matching gravitic to hold the plane up. It was a significant strain for his own cybernetic body, but nothing time in the lab wouldn't cure. His own voice gave no sign of the strain he was under, one advantage of a speech synthesizer under his total control. "Let's put it down together," he urged her. "Everyone is off," he added reassuringly. "and your maker is alive and well. On three..." As he spoke, he was already on the radio calling for emergency personnel - who naturally were already on their way. Maybe the Emerald Cities didn't have Freedom City's experience with superheroes, but they knew a near-disaster when they saw it. Come to think of it, from the amount of chatter on the radio, it seemed like everyone had seen it. -
"Oh-hoh," said Dimitri quietly, studying the young women with an interested look on his face. "So it's that sort, eh? Well then, ladies, old Frost will not bar the door." He made a little gesture at the door behind them. "But if you really want to know what has happened in this city, and not the stories your teachers tell young ladies so as to not angry up the blood, well, you will find no better source than me." He casually snapped open a lighter as he spoke, wishing not for the first time that he hadn't left his smokes at home that day. Damn hypoallergenic laws, what did they do but coddle the weak! "Last demon prince at Claremont is now in depths of space, you know? After he led invasion that only handful of people actually remember. But talking about that would be frightening to people who want to believe their memories are complete - so it is simply not discussed."

Aquaria was pleased that Punchline could tell her gender - not many Surfacers were so observant when it came to understanding the clear femininity of a specimen of Deep One pulchritude such as herself. A tactile sort herself, she responded to his patting of her head by reaching up and squeezing his hand with a three-fingered gauntleted grip before giving a croak of satisfaction at Miracle Girl's sudden arrival. Now the lobster was in the pot! "Is the line still attached?" she inquired, craning her head to look past Miracle Girl, a task made considerably more difficult by the bulky neck that actually made it almost impossible to turn her head in the same way Surfacers did. "Attach it to Punchline first," she urged. "He is an innocent creature."

One quick thing is that in our 'verse, Callie Summers is the new Claremont Headmaster. BW - I love this character concept but the math needs a lot of work. I can walk you through building a new version, or we can just plug in one of our sample speedster sheets and get you playing so you can learn as you go. What do you say?

B - your post has been seen and I will comment on it tonight. While you're waiting, you might want to take another look at our sheet template and House Rules. Here's a sample speedster build that might get you thinking. http://www.freedomplaybypost.com/topic/5127-from-the-laboratory-of-dr-archeville/?do=findComment&comment=151486

To Renegade's surprise, his mighty blow against the false Angel of Death split not just the creature - but the sky itself, wide open! There was an enormous flash of light, brighter than the sun itself, and a moment later, the angels and the mortals were not alone. - "Noo! Death awaited them all! It was prophesied!" Bright golden chains were wrapping themselves around the Angel of Death, binding first its skeletal arms to itself, then around its bony wings, wrapping it as tight as a drum. "Just as in the ancient days, when Egypt held the Chosen Ones in bondage!-" "Those are days long past, brother." Hey-zel, the Angel of Temperance, wielded the chain in his free hand, his mighty winds spread behind him. Other angels were there too, wrapping and binding the great beast, so Hey-zel took the opportunity to speak to the mortal heroes who he had so often fought alongside - and his uncle. "He will be taken to a place where he may be healed," said Hey-zel, looking up at the fallen angel with great pity, then at the other heroes. "We cannot undo his crimes in the mortal world, but we can cleanse the taint in his spiritual essence that pulled him so far from the path." "Hey wait a minute," said Fast-Forward, zipping up to join the group. "I thought the whole idea was that this guy isn't a real angel. What gives?" "There are more things in Heaven and Earth than are dreamt of in your philosophy," quoted Hey-zel. "And more Heavens than stars in your sky. His Heaven is a reflection of men torn apart by war and strife, for whom the Name of God was a curse and his angels...devils. But all crimes may be expiated. In time." - Things were quieter for Paige, alone in the hospital room with August Roman, who had raised his hand to lay it on her arm. He was as old as her father should have been, or more, and as close to death now as she'd ever seen a dying man. He couldn't speak, not outside of the astral realm, but his eyes looked up at her with a burning intensity that spoke of an old man's final gratitude. He breathed slowly, shallowly, a moment before his last.

"I can promise you both that there will be significant changes at this institution," promised Callie Summers. "This will not happen again to my students - to your children. I will make sure that everyone gets the treatment they deserve at this school, so that everyone can grow up to be the person they want to be." "I've tendered my resignation, effective immediately," said Archer from his screen. "Callie-Ms. Summers will find someone who can do my job better than I could, and who can make sure everyone stays safe. From what they tell me, I'll spend long enough recovering that I'd be no good to you next year anyway." Peyton Quinn had her fingers at her temples. "Listen," she said, her voice still a trifle louder than the other adults in the room. "I know I'm not a superperson of any kind, so maybe I don't know how it is in your side of town - but is someone going to explain how a chip got into the man's neck and turned him into the kind of teacher who thinks scaring the hell out of his students makes for good education?" "Alan was badly injured during a fight with some Foundry robots last year," said Summers, "he was in and out of several hospitals, not all of them secure. From what the science people are telling us, the chip must have been implanted in his neck at some point around that time - and been growing inside him since. We had warnings about his changing behavior, but that was put down to...other factors."

"Ho-ho-ho-ho-ho!" Aquaria hadn't actually gotten the joke that Punchline had made - but she knew it was embarassing to tell a joke and hear no one laugh, she'd learned that in her therapy sessions with Surfacers. So she made a noise that was very much like laughing, a deep-throated bullfrog's bellow. When she was done, she asked of Punchline, "How did you come to be in this place? You are not a native." She knew what aliens sounded like, whether they were from the stars, the Surface, or some other place where they did not belong.

"We have fought to a draw," croaked Aquaria. "It was a good game." She was unsure how to propose a compromise, not when she didn't think rolling on her belly and kicking her legs would have the same meaning here that it did elsewhere. "Jessie, you are my podmate..." She gave a little jump and twisted her upper body slightly. "...and I will go clean Baxter's voidings," she said, not needing to have turned her head to see what the dog had been discreetly doing in the sand when she and Jessie were busy with the game. If it had been her decision, she'd have simply left it there, but Surfacers were finicky about such things.
