  1. "Mm, yes." For all that Dimitri and Stesha had a tempestous relationship, he didn't want to bandy words about her love affairs in public. He filled his silence the way he had for seventy years, whipping out a Zippo lighter and cigarette and lighting up. He took a long drag into his frozen lungs, then exhaled the smoky air thoughtfully. "So, tell me about Russian community in West End," he said with an air of seriousness. "You have that leetle Orthodox church with Teodor, the old dissident priest with the great beard?" He made a gesture over the lower half of his face. "And that cafe with all of the Jews. How are the people there, are they happy?" he inquired.
  2. The worst part was that Hel was watching him, sitting on her throne and smiling. She approved of his actions - and that was never good. Wait, no, the worst part was Talya, laying there almost-certainly-dead from an ether overdose, her abdomen split open as he felt around inside it. If Dimitri was honest with himself, it was not the first time he'd found himself in this situation, but it was a hard thing to do it to his best friend in the world, especially when so much was riding on these children. "All right, there you are..." The girl screamed and screamed again as he cut her free, small and vigorous in his arms with the eerie animal cries of a newborn. Things had been hard before - but he knew there were two in there! The girl's brother came easier, too easily. Dimitri Peshkov had held dead babies in his hands before and he wasn't going to let that happen again - he stared down at the small quiet boy with the glowing eye and willed - he was never quite sure if that was what raised that single, feeble cry and the slow movement of breath. Remembering that striking a child to make them cry was no longer recommended by medicine, he cut the children completely free of the mother, then wrapped them up, waiting for Talya's wounds to begin to heal. "Ssh, ssh, children..." He placed them alongside Talya, letting her residual bodyheat give them what he could not. "Soon all will be well!" He said with a bright smile.
  3. I like the Graviton thing - what if we say it's a breakout at Buckner Ridge, the new federal super-prison in Cooper County, Missouri? Because it's away from Freedom City, it makes sense to send the new guys and not have backup handy when it turns out to be a big problem. I think it's time to give another one of the Red Tier Blockbusters a chance...
  4. The gator hissed again at them - this time a warning, as Freedom Eagle sure enough dropped out of the sky and through the treeline to join them. The red, white, blue, and gold figure standing before them was unquestionably not any of the 21st century figures who had worn the armor, but clearly the original holder of the title and designer of the famous patriotic flight suit. The Eagle's face was hard to see behind his flight helmet - he hesitated only a moment before spreading his wings and raising a gauntleted hand. "Citizens! Please be careful; that creature is the Alien-Gator, a monster responsible for the deaths of several hunters over the last few months. If you step away from the creature, I'll be able to apprehend it and take it into custody." The alligator hissed again at Leviathan and Punchline, its scaly eyes widening - a plea? "Crap!" hissed Edge, ducking out of sight inside the shop lest his grandfather's old friend catch a glimpse of him. Everyone had always commented how much Mark Lucas and Jimmy Lucas resembled each other - except that the latter had always favored the bow tie. Despite his desire to stay hidden, though, Mark couldn't help but watch from the doorframe, keeping an eye on the original Freedom Eagle in his prime.
  5. "'M fine," said Riley, which was true enough. He'd bled a fair amount down the side of his face and neck from the sword stroke that had cut his ear, but it was nothing that wouldn't heal on its own. He didn't think Garuda's sword was liable to infect him with anything. Except maybe being an ass. "Jay got himself hurt bad, though. I guess just standing up in the middle of a firefight and yelling about how I should be in girl's prison isn't the smartest fucking thing to do, huh?" The last sentence was practically a shout, directed at the now-human Garuda, whose scorched chest was the worst injury still in the room. Raptor had probably taken the biggest hit of the fight. "You're the freak who started this whole thing-!" Injured or not, Jay looked ready to get up from Madison's grasp and go for Riley before the headmistress interposed herself. In a voice as cold as Frostbyte's ice, she hissed "Both of you. Quiet - now." Reluctantly, both young men did so - Riley stepping back to Robin's side, Jay back to his team. As Next-Gen left, Callie Summers turned to address Robin's team. "What happened tonight is going to change things at this school." She took a breath, and let it out. "Thank you for your efforts on behalf of peace. You can be assured that blame, and responsibility, will be handed out fairly. You are dismissed - and Ms. Sanderson, at least provide the service of lowering your voice."
  6. "We must act quickly," croaked Aquaria, moving to keep Temperance between her and the police officers. Eliza could see the peculiar way Aquaria hunched down at the sight of the police - and no wonder, given what she'd heard of the Deep One's past. Her voice was a low, guttural whisper behind the now-raised opaque face-shield of her armor. "A ssstarspawn might obey a Sssurfacer for an hour, or a day, or a week - but their minds cannot grasssp the true name of the one below. I will help you, Temperanccce. I know the true language of the ones that came before - and of the piping songs between the stars. It's beautiful out there."
  7. What the hell? He'd vaguely listened to Set's speech (as usual envious of people who could just stand there in the middle of a firefight talking without being torn to pieces) - but the sudden strike of lightning, the feeling of real power flowing across his limbs and over his flesh, was more than he could have possibly imagined. For an instant it was tempting - until the cold, liquid knowledge of that pwoer really meant came pouring through him. He took that power and shoved it out and away, off the frame he was determined to keep all-too-human and into the bow that was like his right arm. Woodsman popped out from behind the cover of the fountain in the middle of the green and fired. The bolt, crackling all over with green and gold lightning, struck Chosech in the middle of the chest and exploded with a loud bang, a sound matched a moment later by a bolt of lightning that came crackling down out of the darkened sky and struck the shadow-controller in the hole in his shadowy armor blown open by the bolt, an unnatural bolt that lingered, and lingered, as Chosech howled in agony - Until finally, he dropped. His face set and his pupils round, Woodsman leaped out from behind the fountain - trading his bow for his hatchet. "Tell me," he growled as he stalked towards the helpless man. "Do you bleed? You will."
  8. Woodsman shoots Chosech with his brand-new toy! He'll use the Lightning Bolt arrow. http://orokos.com/roll/439405 = 27 That's a crit! 6+5+5+2=18+15 DC 32 Toughness save for Chosech. Let me know how much damage that does - I'll spend my last HP to force a reroll here.
  9. Oh, forgot - Impervious is an extra, not a PF - so all you have right now is one rank of it. Not really worth investing in.
  10. Nope! Looking for new names. Plus, everyone likes Stesha and Tarrant.
  11. Sounds easy enough. For ease of organization, here's a new thread about the people who are staying on (or rather, joining) the Aux. http://www.freedomplaybypost.com/topic/9281-freedom-league-auxiliary/
  12. Okay, folks. The Freedom League Auxiliary is many things - a backup to the 'main' team with people you call in for specialized situations - like magic specialist and thermovore Comrade Frost! a team of relative 'part-timers' who have commitments elsewhere - like Comrade Frost, who works for the Russian government and is actually paid by them a team of people who for whatever reason the Freedom League may want to keep away from the main publicity - like Comrade Frost! Comrade Frost is their commander! Ideally other people on the team will check off the above list too. Who else do we need?
  13. Some things. It looks better aesthetically to put Enhanced things together in the same 'box' - so you'd have Enhanced Abilities 24 (STR 8, DEX 12, CON 4) [24PP] for example. Do the same with skills and feats, please. Indicate where you've bought PFs like Mighty like so Strike 6 (PF: Mighty) [7PP] Put in your Leaping Distance, you can find the spreadsheet calculator for that on the Green Ronin site. Looking good so far!
  14. "No," said Riley, shaking his head. "She said she's not gonna give me a curfew I'll just break - she told me to just be back by dawn. Guess she doesn't think I'm gonna get in trouble when I'm out with you." It had been slightly embarrassing to realize that Peyton had a pretty good idea of his intentions for this date - but having lived in a confined space his whole life, Peyton's good instincts hadn't been terribly threatening to his privacy. "I was thinking we could go somewhere-" That _did_ make him nervous, since Robin's feelings about his intentions were a lot more important to him than Peyton's were. His voice dropped to a whisper as he leaned forward, pressing his forehead against hers. "One of the spots. Maybe the theater roof."
  15. "That was no elemental," croaked Aquaria. Her faceplate went translucent, revealing the amphibious face within, as she hopped from foot to foot in a dance too precise to be anything other than ritualistic. When she was done, she settled down on the ground nervously - arms folded before her, powerful back legs folded behind her, and inclined her big eyes towards the sky. "That was..." She croaked again, and admitted, "I do not know what the word is in your tongue. We would call it-" She made a noise like a croaking bellow. then went on, "the hatchlings of the stars. Their home is-" another booming croak, "the eye of the one below - whose name we do not speak. It is..." She looked up at the light-polluted sky overhead and pointed one long armored finger at a barely-visible star. "There! From there, when the one sees sin, fiery starspawn come bringing doooom!"
  16. That hits! Let's double the DC since he's so unholy! DC 35 http://orokos.com/roll/438703 He is bruised!
  17. Edge's nod sent Leviathan outside - right towards the alien alligator that walked like a man! (There was no better word for it.) The creature took one look at Leviathan and hissed, eyes widening and nostrils flaring, and immediately began grunting and popping at the reptilian hero with great and ferocious animation, teeth bared for special emphasis. It was all very interesting and no doubt exactly the language that a humanoid alligator would speak, but it was not within the realm of languages spoken by Tristan Delacroix. Up in the sky, a man with bird wings swooped overhead above the treeline, his form half-obscured by the overgrowth. "Alien-Gator!" he was calling. "You can't hide from me forever, monster! You'll pay for what you did - so swears FREEDOM EAGLE!" "Oh my God," said Edge aloud, staring up at the canopy. "That's Freedom Eagle! The original Freedom Eagle...have we gone back in time?" "Quirk has never had that kind of power, has he?" asked Monsoon, standing next to Mark by the shop window as if this sort of thing happened all the time. "This must just be a recreation of the past..."
  18. Despite the name, the Karre Mountains weren't actually that high - the Central African Republic was a low-lying, hot nation and even its highest points were closer to hot, dry Appalachians than anything else. Mark's teleportation put the Liberty League, and Triakosia, down alongside a hastily-built military road at the edge of the Massif proper, the scene of the massacre. The CAR troops there were uniformed and armed, but it looked like with nothing more than rifles and machine guns. They seemed to recognize Triakosia straight off - and within the space of a few seconds, amid shouted orders in French, the weapons were aimed at the woman who was theoretically a prisoner against the Liberty League. "Gentlemen, gentlemen, it's all right!" called Mark, "She's with us." He knew Colonel Ngaoui's English was good enough to carry on a conversation, and of course the men there would remember his previous visit in Monsoon's company. "We're going up the road to investigate." The rifles lowered at that, rather quickly - the soldiers obviously knew what they were dealing with. Mark carried on a quick conversation with the mustachioed, slimly-built commander of the small force while Monsoon took over talking to the Liberty League - behind her the CAR troops opening up the pro-forma barricade they'd erected on the steep trail up the mountain that looked recently cleared - enough for Redbird, anyway. "The UNISON team has already pulled out to the capital city for diplomatic reasons," she said, her own rather diplomatic disdain just audible in her augmented voice as she spoke. "It'll be just us inside the mountain. None of you are afraid of closed spaces, are you?"
  19. That's interesting. My outer shell was built by Miss Americana's staff at Archetech. With the plane deflected, the robotic heroes were left with one serious problem - while they had managed to significantly alter its flight path through some carefully applied force, neither of them had the strength to actually lift a fully-loaded 747. After some fast consideration, and consultation of his GPS map of the Emerald Cities, Citizen said Put it down in the river. He was vaguely aware of the helicopters that were in the air, keeping a respectful distance but filming their rescue efforts, the buzz of electronic communications filling the air all around them at a density that approached that of Freedom City - but his focus was on both his load and his companion. We can keep the velocity slow enough to lessen the impact - and slow the sinking long enough to get the passengers off. He thought about the other entity's description of herself and her role and said I'll hold up the plane as long as I can. You get your maker off - and everyone else.
  20. Sea Devil twirled her tridents and yanked them apart, scraping their sizzling tips against the ground with such force that she left deep gouges on the wood beneath. The starspawn made a sound that wasn't a shriek but was as it tore apart into two halves, the fragments themselves tumbling away into diminishing sparks. She took a moment to breathe, her tridents vanishing away to nothing with a slight vorp, and belatedly she remembered the building they were in. "The walls will fall! You'll drown!" she croaked at Temperance, tumbling over her English in her hurry. "We must go!" The creature she'd been rescuing had long since bolted from the burning building as she warred with the starspawn - so with a mighty leap of her powerful back legs, Aquaria propelled herself up through the hole the creature had made, and then out the window nearby!
  21. I think this is ready for the Guidebook, olopi.
  22. I'm inclined to some variant of what durf made 1 and 3 - in other words, what Gizmo suggested. I don't know if we have a good way to make this an event without lots of carnage or, worse, lots of having to write NPCs at the expense of PCs - and I don't think anyone's inclined to that.
  23. I always liked the way Wargames did it with the superheroes working for the US government - OK, the prestige is less in the superpowered community and your options are more restrained, but OTOH you get a steady salary and benefits, you can do things like retire with a pension, and you get to serve your country. I think the same could be done for a US team here (heck, we could even name it after the Wargames team and pull that towards more continuity) as well as a UN one. Is this really a story about the US government being more authoritarian, durf? I'd use that word if we were talking about a Civil War-style event, not just a change in policy that leads them to funding a superhero team. As far as NPCs, beyond my innate lust for NPC bloood do we actually need to push any of them off-stage? I'd suggest we only do that with people who can be plausibly replaced by PCs for story purposes - so an Atlantean princess can be mentored by Glamazon rather than Nereid, a psychic can be mentored by Hologram, or Psyche, or Blue Fox, rather than the Scarab, and an up-and-coming speedster can be mentored by Fast-Forward or Velocity rather than Johnny Rocket. To my mind, the big thing is the changeover from a Justice League-style team to an Avengers-style team - which is certainly an event, but doesn't need to be a bloody one.
  24. I've been waiting for international heroes to join the UN (like Edge) for quite some time, Vahnyu! Sometimes I think I'm the only one who finds UNISON and UNIQUE to be interesting-sounding organizations. Right now their super-agents are the world's most powerful builder and a hydrokinetic martial artist - plenty of room for moe.
  25. "Might I make alternate suggestion?" inquired Dimitri delicately. Turning to Leilani, he gave her a confident smile. "Why don't you lead the way under railroad crossing, from _under_ railroad crossing?" He smiled cheerfully. "Really shake things up a bit. We will teach common thugs fear by showing them that we are most uncommon. I know you can do it, Volcanic," he added reassuringly, "your powers have grown with your control. I will be honored to follow you onto scene to continue our leetle masquerade of fearsomeness." He considered suggesting that Bonfire pose as Leilani's mate - but then realized he didn't like that idea at all. "This fellow here can follow - and Pax can perhaps come from above?"
