guide gab Freedom League lineup and role
Avenger Assembled replied to Ari's topic in The Lighthouse: Catchphrase!
Here are some thoughts: Ari wrote: If you think there's a story to tell from a given setting NPC being on the Freedom League, just go ahead and do it. I don't think we need to hash out the fate of every Claremont alum/older NPC - if there's a reason for them to be there, just put them there. Raveled wrote: That does sound interesting - though I would want a suitably worthwhile story to go with it. Alder wrote: I absolutely agree - let's encourage people to work with PCs rather than NPCs- as long as we're not breaking any toys in the process. Durf wrote: I...don't think anyone has actually asked, have they? I certainly wouldn't have said no! Ari wrote: Yes, the powerful characters with a strong connection to the site's history - with players with a proven track record. TV wrote: I'll be honest with you, TV, I have generally treated Velocity as an Aux member because it didn't feel fair to the other players to have her be 'ahead' of them because she was approved during an earlier generation in our story-telling history. Heritage wrote: My thoughts have always been similar. I agree with the issue of opening up more narrative space - that's why I've sent at least one PC out to the Emerald Cities, and I encourage other people with similar concerns to do that (or send them off to Bedlam). I'm making a point to push for Citizen as the Superman of the Emerald Cities because that's a niche it's tough to fill in the homeland. So I suppose I don't really disagree with anybody - sure, let's put more NPCs on the Freedom League if that serves somebody's story, but let's make sure we're keeping the focus on the PCs. Let's keep the NPCs around, because they make handy story tools. I don't really have an issue with opening up some variant of the Freedom League to more people, but I would definitely want a hard veto on any particular PC joining it based on how well that PC fit. The days of the really bad players are mostly gone - so I'm not too worried about that. I always rather liked the Aux designation - it amused me that the Aux team was actually much more powerful than their NPC predecessors. I don't really have an issue with the designation essentially fading away, however. Just one guy's thoughts. -

Do any seem disposable? Like one could kill them off and no stories would be lost? Asking, uh, for a friend! -

Catchphrase! -
Things were not going well. Talya, ever the professional, had suggested the leather strap from Dimitri's bag to silence any involuntary cries that might distract their defenders at a critical moment. That decision had proved particularly wise - because there had been more cries than needed. "They have not turned. They are bound together." Dimitri looked at Talya for permission, finding it on her sweat-covered face, and reached into his bag for his scalpel - and the anesthetic. It was a strong dose - enough that even Talya's perceptions faded under the ether. But he knew how fast she would recover, even from a dose so high. He was out of options. He had precious little time to prepare, even as his grip on the scalpel nearly rimed it over with ice, killing any bacteria or virii on it. He thought first - God forgive me. And then in an order from his youth, when immortality and the world were new. Ni shagu nazad! And he brought the blade down and he cut.

Dawn of the Cyber Empire IC
Avenger Assembled replied to EternalPhoenix's topic in The Emerald Cities
Is that...another cyber-intelligence? There were precious few of those on Terra - enough that Sharl was briefly distracted from his task to study his new companion. No he messaged her urgently these planes aren't designed for that kind of damage - if you take off a wing, I'll lose control of it. Not that he had perfect control yet - he shifted downward a few feet, trying once again to find the plane's center of gravity to push against. And you'll drop debris down on a populated area. It was still hard to remind himself that people actually lived in the dwarfish, broad cities of Terra - the Emerald Cities being more so than Freedom City. Listen - here's what I need you to do. I can stop this plane - but if I do it alone, I may break it up in the air and kill the humans on board. I need you to provide a counterweight up by the starboard front fuselage. My name is Citizen and we can do this together. -
+32 on the check now. http://orokos.com/roll/434736 = 35 Man, uh, the dice are not on our side here. I'll spend an HP and make it automatically next round, if I understand the mechanics correctly.

ic A Dark and Spiteful God (IC)
Avenger Assembled replied to Avenger Assembled's topic in The Realms Beyond
Steve's lined eyes flicked from Tarva to Daphne and back again, putting together the naive young woman's reaction with what he knew of the people who lived in the DuTemps Building. Silent though he was, the look on his dark face was as if lightning had flashed in the stormclouds brewing over his head. "You are, uh, here because the League suggested I bring associates..." said the shadow-witch shakily, looking briefly at Daphne and then at Daedalus again. She didn't look at Kimber at first - but the ghost could feel the tension in her lover's body, and knew how grateful she was for the touch. Tarva had been a bundle of nerves, shaky and tense, since the news of their summoning had arrived. "Y-you should-" She did look over at Kimber now. "The city would swim in death - and that world. You should not go alone." "Yes, well," said Daedalus. "Murdock and Tarva represent two very different perspectives on the Terminus - both are valuable. Before we debate the point of dimensional travel, there is another matter. Before our probe went into automatic shutdown, it intercepted a SOS signal, one with enough signal variation that we're confident it came from a live sender. Not powerful enough for direction-finding, not with the equipment we use, but enough to tell us that it was coming from somewhere in that version of Freedom City." "It...is likely it is a trap," said Steve reluctantly, his voice a low, unhappy rumble. "Such things are not uncommon. An entropic fission device would be within the reach of almost any Annilihist - and it would create an opportunity for further destruction. A detonation would obliterate an investigating party - and any survivors could be tracked easily to their home. I advise caution." "How-how can you be so cold?" hissed Tarva at the former drone. "Survivors on that world could be hunted by drones even now." Steve shifted in his seat, the slight creak of leather a sign of his great weight. "Yes. And their master would think nothing of destroying those drones if it meant luring enemies to their doom." He locked eyes with the shadow-witch - who Kimber felt wilt. "I...yes. M-maybe caution is the best idea..."- 51 replies

"Over the weekend, the Ligue de la Justice de l'Afrique Centrale was deployed to the Yade Massif in the Central African Republic in response to rumors of local people going missing. The Ligue handles metahuman incidents in central Africa too big for any one hero to handle - they have volunteer members from Angola, Chad, Gabon...all people who could have made themselves millionaires in the private sector but who give their time and their lives to protect their people." Mark actually choked up briefly at that, letting Monsoon take over the conversation. "They're dead now." Monsoon was, when it pleased her, straightforward. "Yesterday, park rangers found the partial remains of thirty missing villagers and the five Ligue members. They had all been killed, and dissected - and from eyewitness testimony, DNA evidence, and recordings, the murderer was you, Triakosia." Mark took over again, having recovered - or had he been choked up at all? "Central Africa's been on the edge of war for years. With the disappearance of their metahuman defenders, that war may happen - especially since there's evidently someone loose in central Africa who can massacre an entire super-team and escape undetected. What do you think the UN should do about this?" Mark asked Triakosia, giving her a level look.

Still gamely in the fight, Garuda staggered towards Nighthawk, flaming sword in his hand. It was becoming increasingly clear that he was groundbound, Sparkler's searing blast having burned his heavy pectorals and scorched many of his once pretty feathers - but injuries aside, he wasn't down yet. "She's a monster, just like all of you!" he said in a voice that was in all honesty a screech - somewhere between a human's shout and an angry eagle's cry. "None of you even belong here!" He pointed at Woodsman, who looked ready for a fight. "And you're the worst of them! I know what you are - I can see inside! This is all your fault!"
-
"Oh yeah," said Riley confidently, "I could-" He hesitated a moment, then realized that that wasn't a euphemism for something. Stay on target, Woodsman! he scolded himself. "Could get into the records room," he said. "Fens is easier 'n some stations, hardly anyone there." He'd learned that from working with Robin - but the geography of your standard Freedom City police station was something he'd learned about on his own. "Records room is gonna be downstairs tucked away somewhere, prolly with some old guy watchin' it." What were the odds that it would be a nest of Ferals - or maybe bears? Slim, he reminded himself, slim. "Fens station has 'mergency exit out to the street down there, come t'think of it..." Or they had fifteen years earlier in an alternate world, anyway. He looked at Robin and squeezed her shoulders, his way of showing he was in with whatever she was suggesting. "

Approaching, Dimitri looked from Talya to Erik and back again for a moment or two, then seemed to change course from whatever it was he'd been about to say. "I am doctor," said Dimitri, "and that is probably good idea. You never know what things can shape child in womb." He scratched his chin, then turned to Erik. "Pardon just a moment, Erik, need to speak to my friend on urgent matter." He'd opted not to share his thoughts about immortality with the younger man - this was not the time for that. Turning back to Talya, he switched to Russian to ask, "Why didn't you tell me you were pregnant?" He threw his arms wide. "In the Devil's name, Natalya, we've been friends for seventy years and I am your...your occasional physician, when there are no human physicians about," he conceded. "I know you play your cards close to the vest, but for pity's sake, you told me you were going to prison before you went in!"

Lookit his eyes. He sees Huang. He sees Huang. Woodsman fired from the shoulder a bolt that exploded in Chosech's face - the flash was impressively bright and loud, and the cloud that doused him foul-smelling from the the way the shadow controller began to cough and gag. Running like Hell, Riley joined the small group of his friends, taking shelter behind one of the quad benches to work on a second bolt. He didn't exult, didn't issue commands - he waited for his friends to begin their own attacks on a target that was now as blind as he'd tried to make all of them just a few moments earlier.

Mark took the information and began looking it over with a serious look on his face, letting Monsoon continue the conversation. As the two women talked, he took out his phone and began taking pictures of Triakosia's, obviously sending her information somewhere. "That's very fortunate," the hydrokinetic commented. "But on the other hand, we all know the formidable extent of your powers. An alibi for a normal woman is not the same thing as an alibi for a metahuman." She steepled her gauntleted hands on the table in front of her. "If you were going to fly from here, to, say, central Africa - how long would it take you?" They both were watching her intently now - suggesting that her next answer was an important one indeed.

Standard: Woodsman fires on Choshech - using his Dazzle. (Note that this is visual and olfactory). Not sure what range penalties there are right now. http://orokos.com/roll/434179 = 12 is unacceptable! http://orokos.com/roll/434180 = 24 with the HP is better! That's a DC 21 Reflex save to avoid being visually and scent-blind this round, and a DC 21 Fort save to shake it when that time comes. Move: Riley spends this one joining the other heroes.

"Most people don't know this," Mark began, "but Monsoon and I are part of UNIQUE - the group of superhumans that work for the United Nations. That means that when there's a real international crisis, we're likely to be called in." Mark folded his hands on the table before him and said, "Triakosia, can you tell us where you were over the Labor Day long weekend?" "An alibi witness would be nice too," spoke Monsoon, her Received Pronunciation slightly muffled by her mask. "Not that we don't question the word of a superhero - but you understand." From the skeptical tone in her voice, it sounded like she actually did question the word of a superhero.

Reflex vs. 20: http://orokos.com/roll/433818 = 13! I'll HP that and pass the save. With one rank of Evasion, Woodsman is fine.

Woodsman took this opportunity to make his descent - dropping down by line from above with speed enough that no lurking snipers could target him. He was reasonably sure that no one could be left in the scenario like that. After all, they'd have shot at Nighthawk or Nevermore first. But he kept his eyes open during his rapid descent anyway - letting his line dangle as he ducked away into the shadowy places away from the direct illumination of the skylight. Once he was down with the others, he decided to test the patience of anyone watching them, firing a brightly burning flare that zipped its way into the darkness all around them.

Aquaria wasn't entirely sure what position to adopt when playing volleyball - it was pretty clear she'd never actually played the game other than watching it on television. But with a little help from the others, who after all had actually gone through high school gym classes (albeit atypical ones), she was able to figure out where to stand and what position to adopt as everyone got ready. She was looking forward to playing with their friends - Kimber the cheerful and Indira chaos restrained, and in helping Jessie have a good time. She still smelled distinctly of fish oil, but the wind and salt air were beginning to drive that away. Soon she'd need to soak herself again - but not just yet! "Good surfing! We should let them shoot first," she croaked merrily to Jessie, "because we have challenged them to the duel!" For his part, Baxter settled down on Tarva's lap, knowing from experience that the tall shadow woman was a soft touch when it came to dog treats and scratching behind the ears. She sang a few bars of an old song to the dog as they watched the players on the makeshift field, one in a language no one quite recognized but was beautiful enough for that. "Show them your power!" called Tarva, "Give them a show they won't forget!" With Kimber busy with the game and Leilani heading out to sea, Dimitri walked down to the edge of the surf and watched Leilani and Daphne begin their lessons. Standing on the edge of the wet sand, the liquid beneath his feet was beginning to crystallize into ice did he step back, a wistful smile tugging briefly at his features before he stepped back to begin taking pictures. "Magnificent!" he called. "Like watching Esther Williams brought to life!"
