Woodsman knew a secret that his friends didn't know - a secret passed down to all the children who'd grown up in the shadow of the Forest Primeval. Sometimes heroes failed. Sometimes the most powerful people in the universe did everything they could to save the day and it didn't freaking work. He'd been on edge throughout the crisis, an edge grown worse as word of the extent of the crisis had spread through the campus community. But he'd kept his cool and avoided the arguments that would have gotten him 'campus service', kept his cool because there were more important things to worry about than his anger. When the darkness came, he was in his room, bow half-strung and bolts baking in their chemical baths. Glancing outside his window, he didn't wait for the campus emergency signal - instead whispering a single soft curse before he began reassembling his gear. The new stuff would have to wait for tomorrow. If tomorrow came.

"He doesn't belong here," said Jayaman, staring down at Kyle. Jayaman seemed to have forgotten about his problem with Kyle for the moment, and instead seemed more interested in persuading him of his point of view. "He doesn't even have any powers, he's just a psycho with a crossbow. Everyone knows Bowman just sent him here so he wouldn't wind up in jail," he added, glaring at Riley. Looking back at Kyle, he said, "Look, I overreacted before - the magic you do doesn't make you a bad person. Just because I channel the powers of a god doesn't mean I am one. If you want to talk to people who aren't a bunch of future supervillains or their girlfriends," he added with a glare Cathy's way, "I'll be over there." Jayaman's departure left Riley fuming and unsettled for a long, uncomfortable moment before he finally grunted, "Hm. Bad intro, Kyle and Lee. Sorry 'bout that. Not everyone here's like me. Or like Garuda," he added, cocking his head at the table where Jayaman had joined a group of other boys.

Nina leaped along after the other hydrokinetics, then reluctantly took to the air to join them, flying alongside Tsunami and Temperance with her scimitar drawn, carefully positioned in her left hand and away from where the other women could run into it in the air. Monsoon's head was already beginning to hurt - but luckily it wasn't far to the pier. "A fair concern, water-witch," she said seriously to Temperance. The words were just a guess - but generally people without magic didn't talk that way. "My hydrokinetic abilities are diamagnetic. They work on blood - and all other liquids containing water." It was an innocous enough comment - save that Tsunami had heard of other hydrokinetics whose abilities had the same origin. "We must be mindful if we face one who controls blood. I have...seen this done. It is a terrible thing."

"We can help you do what you like," he said reassuringly, moving his hands to hers once she seemed to have lost any desire to bolt. "Control it, find out what happened to you, we can do it, easy-pie. In Russia, I handle cases like yours all the time, and these Americans, well, they eat it with their Wheaties." He hmmed, thinking about her case - and trying not to think about the sensation of all that heat creeping up his bones. "I tell you what, I was around all those fifty years, you want to know what happened, I tell you. Are you hungry?" he asked her. "Don't worry about complaining to us, if we gotta find you stuff that's fireproof, better know it now than later."- 48 replies

"Boy we met wouldn't cause trouble if it wasn't caused to him," said Richard, speaking in the slow, deliberate tones that meant he was dead serious. He looked over the pictures, a quick glance telling him as much as an hour's examination by another man, then back at the detectives as he took a seat on the couch next to his wife. "What happened? These guys have anything to say for themselves?" He found himself unwilling to talk much about Errant's friends - Will, certainly, that big Atlantean girl who Holly liked so much, and a couple of others he couldn't really remember. "My boy says he's New Freedom - I know they cause trouble sometimes if their people stick their heads out."

"Not gonna get boils unless damned thing can give it to corpses - and even then, is not gonna stick." Comrade Frost was animated but professional, speaking in the tones of a man who might have had a big pot of coffee - if he could drink coffee. "If hitting it in head doesn't work, I get in its way, see what it makes of ice. Bet it doesn't like those boils frozen." He put his hands in his pockets, his eyes wide as he studied the situation, and the conflict in the city. This was far from his first apocalypse - but they never did get much easier. "Why the hell would Boils attack here?" he demanded of no one in particular.- 29 replies

Nina indulged a few thoughts about the land of giants she'd emigrated to - and despite herself, missed Socotra's society where all lived under the watchful eye of Typhoon and the authorities. "There is a missing child!" she declared, leaping onto the top of a lightpole, then onto another down at the other end of the 'block' made by the log ride, trying to let her impressive voice reach as many people as possible. "His name is Ty and he is lost! Ty, your father worries for you! He-" She swallowed unaccountably, wondering if it was starting the day at mosque that made her so emotional today. "He is waiting for you! You are in no trouble! Everyone look for Ty!"

"They sent me a trident, the holy symbol of my people. All I had to do was take it in my hand and I was transported to their island - along with Jessie." She didn't speak of how the trident itself had been worked and reworked by her under Bie Yie's guidance, first into armor she could summon with a thought, then into armor itself - she didn't understand how the magic of that worked, and she was still afraid that the armor would be taken from her if she spoke about it too much. "They promised me justice," she croaked sadly, throat inflating and deflating unhappily as she looked down at the table before her. "Do you know what that meant? We have nothing in this world but the gods whose marks I bear," she croaked, looking up at the Praetorians. "My people starve in the barren parts of the waters and are hunted like animals when we try to feed ourselves. All I wanted to do was to try and be a hero for them. But it was all LIES." The last word was a deep bass bellow.

Richard Cline may have lacked his wife's sixth sense - but he caught her mental signal quickly, and was downstairs behind her in practically the time it took the last echoes of her words to die off. For all that he didn't like cops (at all, especially not at his house), he was all smiles for the detectives as well. "Hey, everybody," he said with a slightly overcaffinenated air - his usual way of talking when he was doing his level best to be polite. "You guys like this weather we're having?" He didn't say a single word about what they'd just left, the cunningly redecorated bedroom that he'd fixed up at super-speed to avoid a precognitive's senses. It wasn't like Paige couldn't get him back later anyway. He leaned against the foyer entrance behind Paige, wearing a white T-shirt and jeans that looked a bit more working-class than his wife's choice of fashion. Things had been...more sober around their household lately - which was one reason why he liked this holiday so much.

Comrade Frost pulled Leilani in for a hug - the exact same kind of hug he'd given Bombshell the day she'd come to tell him that Alexander Rhodes was dead, not that anyone here had been there for that. She was from a more tactile era, just as he was. "I'm sorry, child. I'm so sorry." The effects of the heat transfer on his embrace were immediately obvious, his pale skin flushing ruddy red, his bluish-white hair flushing a dark blonde - but he didn't push the moment too long, for fear of agitating her further. He stepped back, his hands still on her shoulders, keeping eye contact to pull her focus from her inner thoughts, or on the others, or the cavern itself for that matter. "We will do everything we can for you, and to find those who you have lost." His Russian accent was altogether gone - and for the first time since anyone had seen him, his eyes were brown. "You are not alone."- 48 replies

Behind Kyle came a gasp - and a flare of magical energy. When he turned around, an unfamiliar figure was standing there, a humanoid eagle with spread wings, mighty claws, and a white dress shirt and slacks on? "What do you think you're doing, freak?" the eagle demanded, a disapproving scowl on its face. "Right in front of the first-years, too!" The eagle pointed towards a table of freshmen, a couple of whom were watching with rank fascination, but others who seemed to be trying to eat their lunches and gossip to each other at the same time. They didn't seem terribly scandalized by the appearance of an imp. "Don't think yer his boss, Jay," said Riley, glaring up at Jay with real animosity, his voice a low, venomous growl. "Why don't you run back to yer little nowhere island and leave the rest of us alone?" "You don't scare me, psycho," Jayaman spat at Riley, his wings and eagle-head receding, revealing a thick-eyebrowed young Asian man with a scowl still present on what should have been a handsome face. "One day you're going to cross the line, Woodsman," he seemed to put a special bite on the last syllable, making direct eye contact with Riley. "And not you or your little demon-summoning goon squad is going to stop the real heroes from bringing you down."

Aquaria ducked down just long enough to remove her shoes, then jumped up on one of Ray's stools, her three-toed feet making a faint squishing noise as she squatted on top of the leather. Rather than interrupt Jessie as she studied the potential designs, instead she watched avidly herself, her big, bulging eyes wide as she watched the artist and his canvas, a look of great interest on her face. "This is very exciting," she finally said. "You should paint our walls when we are home."

Aquaria looked across the table at the Praetorians, her big goggle eyes swiveling forward to look Moon-Moth up and down for a long second. "Behold," she croaked after a moment's pause, her voice the deep rumble of an aquatic species on land. "Welcome, Praetorians, to the World." She spread her hands on the table, big, thick-fingered the triple digits wide apart as if she was thinking about springing. "I remember you," she said, focusing on Paradigm. "You were the one who was there. You said bad things." To Moon-Moth's eyes, the aquatic humanoid was adorned with tattoos and other markings that bespoke an ancient arcane legacy - he'd come looking for a science-terrorist but found a female from a species that worshiped some of the great and terrible gods of Creation, the symbols of her people arranged in blue layers across her green and white hide.

"But hey, you were lovely lava woman, and now you are lovely flesh woman. Things are going on up and up!" sand Dimitri sociably, giving Leilani a reassuring wink. Sobering quickly, hands sliding into his parka pockets, he said, "Much has been happening in Hawaii recently. Tell us your story of today, from moment and place you awoke to last thing you remember, so we can help find the people that have lost you. Can you tell us date?" He didn't mention the year, or whatever she thought it was, - now was hardly the time for that. Normal people do not discuss what year it is. "Don't worry, we find them, we send someone people like like Fleur de Joie here - not Communist ice monster!"- 48 replies

Aquaria sat down awkwardly in one of the chairs, its rounded interior not shaped quite right for her posterior, and squeaked around on it a few times until she settled into a posture that looked like she was leaning back from the opposite side of the table. At the sight of the water, she first poured Jessie a glass, then set the pitcher directly in front of her. "Thank you," she croaked softly. "Will they be here soon?" Shifting nervously in her seat as Daedalus spoke, she reached down and suddenly pulled off her hoodie, exposing her muscular, tattooed upper torso, and began spreading her hydrating cream over her back and chest. She didn't want to be the least bit dried out when the Praetorians got here.

Wednesday April 27, 2016 Washington, DC AEGIS Headquarters The AEGIS headquarters in Washington, DC is not where most of the field agents are posted - the single largest AEGIS facility is located in Freedom City. This building, one of dozens of other square glass boxtowers built along the Anacostia River, is a place of bureaucrats; payroll clerks and human resources types, archivists and pension planners, the thousands of other workers whose unglamorous jobs keep the glamorous agents of AEGIS fed, happy, and well-paid. The MAX Armor agents kept on staff here are there mostly to deal with supervillains whose research for major super-battles consists of Googling "AEGIS Headquarters." With a heavy BOOM, the last of the MAX agents hit the parking lot asphalt, the sound of impact soon drowned out by the cataclysmic storm overhead. As millions of fist-sized hailstones rain down on AEGIS, tough windows cracking but not shattering, as lightning splits the sky overhead, a voice breaks the heavens, carried by the thunder itself. Although it seems to crack the air above AEGIS headquarters, it echoes across the city, reflected by nearly every surface in an intimidating feat of acoustics. "LADIES. GENTLEMEN. HERE WE ARE, AT THE HEART OF THE CANCER THAT CALLS ITSELF 'POLITICS.' FOR TOO LONG, YOU HAVE DEFIED THE WILL OF THE EARTH! YOU HAVE CRAFTED LAWS THAT ENABLE AND SHELTER THOSE WHO SPILL POISON UPON THE LAND AND THE SEA! YOU HAVE SHELTERED THOSE WHO IMPRISON AND TORTURE THEIR FELLOW CREATURES, DOING NOTHING AS THESE BUTCHERS CONDUCT A BLOOD-STAINED CAMPAIGN ENDING IN THE DEVOURING OF FLESH! YOU WASTE YOUR TIME WITH SENTIMENT AS PEOPLE ARE ENCOURAGED TO WASTE THE SEED AND THE EGG, DENYING THE CREATION OF NEW LIFE! THE STORM WILL COME TO SWEEP AWAY ALL YOU PERVERTS, POLLUTERS, AND OTHER FILTH - AND I AM THE STORM! WHEN THE HARD RAIN FALLS UPON YOU, YOU WILL KNOW YOU HAVE A CHOICE TO MAKE. REPENT YOUR SINS... OR BE WASHED AWAY."

Tuesday April 26, 2016 3PM Palermo Time - 9AM Freedom City time There's an English-language newscrew in Palermo this afternoon, the BBC crew's report on Italian tourism having been transformed into a worldwide spectacle by means of the Internet. "Some sort of hideous monster moving its way through the city-" A hazy image of a warped parody of a man, some eight or nine feet tall and nearly nude, dressed only in rags and covered in hideous, pustulating boils. "seemingly emerged from the bay and is now making its way through the heart of this beachside community-" It becomes abundantly clear as it, he, passes, that whatever he is is infectious - a wave of that giant fist, and a barricade of the city's Carabinieri, military police posted here for anti-Mafia duty, are on the ground, screaming and writhing as boils erupt from their own flesh. "rampaging through this historic city like nothing we've ever seen before-" He doesn't even bother to knock down the house at the end of the seaside street, instead simply powering through it as he heads into the older, more built-up, more populated parts of this city over half a million. It's abundantly clear that there is no power on Earth - or at least no power in Palermo, that can stop him. "With the current Papal crisis occupying Italy's defenders, we may be alone. This is-" The newscaster screams, his handsome face writhing in agony as the boils erupts from his flesh, and the camerawoman drops her camera and screams as well, catching one last image of the monster leering at them as he passes by. - This is the fourth day of the crisis. By the time the Freedom League arrives in Palermo, everyone knows what they're dealing with. This is Shkhin - this is the Plague of Boils.

"I have little knowledge of the culinary geography of Earth-Prime," conceded Steve, "but Miss Americana informs me that the local food is excellent." He hmmed, remembering his conversation with Gina - who was always one to plan trips and other visits outside of Freedom City to the utmost. "The restaurant adjacent to the Crowne Plaza Hotel came highly recommended." He fell silent again, trying to keep himself talking in order to make the conversation palatable to the active young woman. "I believe the men can finish the work without our supervision. Will you accompany me?" - As they talked, Raina was beginning to feel something - a sensation of pressure all around her, not physical, but like the humidity in the room was growing at an exponential rate despite how dry she knew intellectually it was both inside the air-conditioning and in the near-desert city outside. She wasn't feeling this with her skin, though, or any physical nerves - but rather with the innate sensory abilities tuned to the magical planes all around her. Something was about to happen...
