It was a sign of how unsettlingly wrong the police officers were that the response of the closest to Harrier was to advance on him, hand at the sidearm at his waist. "Please step back, sir, this is-" Harrier didn't hesitate. He brought up his pike and stepped close, catching the man behind the head in an embrace that lasted just long enough for Steve to ram his spiked head directly into the man's face. There was a crunch as teeth broke, and the man dropped, bleeding heavily from a deep cut on his forehead and shallower ones on his cheeks. The hardest part had been in not crushing his skull like a grape. Walking forward with a slow, deliberate stride, Harrier swept his pike downward and caught the second clone in the groin, then smashed the man under the chin with enough force to send him cartwheeling backwards and against the pavement with a heavy thump. The third officer actually had time to get his gun out and fire a shot that ricocheted off Steve's armored chest. Without breaking stride, Steve pulled the gun out of the man's hand with a snap of breaking finger, then brought the gun around to smash the man across the face and smash him backwards and onto the floor. It had been fast and brutal, but he'd taken the three thugs apart without so much as slowing down. He could have killed them all if he had wanted to - and as he looked across the car at the two remaining 'policemen', his intentions seemed nakedly obviously. He distantly heard the screams of terror from the other vehicles, saw the people running _towards_ the police in the other vehicles...and hesitated.

As the women headed into the kitchen to cook, Steve gave Erik a serious look - knowing a smile would only betray his second-hand nerves as Miss Americana went out among the women, knowing how Gina must be feeling back in her basement. "Come, let us watch hockey," he told Erik as if discussing plans for a warrior's bonding ritual. "And then we can feast. I understand the Blades are against the Panthers this day - and I know they are our cause." He patted Erik on the arm, then took a careful seat on the living room couch, the springs groaning in protest under his great weight. "Your children look healthy," he commented as he made himself as comfortable as he could.

She found Riley sitting in the tree, his legs around one great limb like he'd been born there, staring at the house where he had been. But not this house; not in this world. "He left them," Riley said quietly, his voice level, his accent stripped from his words as he kept them calm and controlled. His voice was low and almost a whisper, the sound of a hunter waiting in a blind. "He left them two years ago, when Riley started taking hormones. He said he didn't care what Peyton thought, that he wasn't going to let his little girl turn into something she wasn't, and that if he couldn't stop it, at least he didn't have to watch." He gripped the branch in front of him tightly, tighter than Robin knew he needed to in order to hang on. "Riley told me about it." He turned his head, slowly, and looked at Robin. "Do you think my dad would have been like that, if he'd lived?"

Paige caught flashes of an argument at super-speed outside, mostly Richard firmly telling his mother that bigotry was not acceptable in their household and that if she wanted to spend time with Richard and Holly, she needed to keep that to herself. Anna didn't have much to say to that (she tended to wait until she and Richard were really alone before unloading on him, Paige knew from long experience), but she could feel her mother-in-law seething as she stepped back into the house. Anna was smiling, though, as she came into the kitchen just long enough to say "I'm so sorry, Ms. Celeste, I'm just overtired. I'm sure you're a lovely-" was there a momentary pause there, the kind you'd only pick up on if you'd lived thirty years with a time controller? "-person. I'm just going to sit down for a while with my son and talk. You're welcome to join us later if you like." Holly went out to join her grandma, given her cold, and Paige caught a quick Jeeze, sorry! from her husband (who couldn't think too loudly with Holly around, who could always listen to her father better than her mother) before he went out in the living room too to turn on the football game.

"Dad!" The voice coming down the stairs sounded very much like her Riley. The tension on Riley-Prime's face, the body suddenly drawn up tight like a bow-string, that was familiar too. The boys were both at a loss for words, but their reactions were very different as Riley-Prime stared at his biological father. "Hello, Riley, Riley," said Casey, echoes of Riley's contralto in his own deep voice. "Robin." He didn't quite say hello to Peyton, but the two of them did lock eyes for a moment. "I'm sorry, I know I should have called. But when you mentioned Riley's dimensional duplicate was here, I thought I should stop by to say hello." "So you think you can just walk back in here, after everything you said to me? Everything you did to your son?" demanded Peyton, her eyes flashing with banked fire. "What, were you hoping this one was a girl?!" There was old hurt, and a shared resolve from Riley and his mother. But Robin's Riley had turned and was running out the back of the house, bolting for the yard and the towering oak tree in the backyard, its leaves yellow and red beneath his feet as he began almost racing his way up the bark.

"They were sent a document containing information that could have been used to summon a demon," replied Seven. "I'm afraid I'm not at liberty to discuss the situation while the investigation is still live - just be assured that the attempt failed and that you need not be concerned about that." They were done, and they could go - albeit with an escort. Seven rode with Talya and Raina all the way down inside the island, their tram humming as it made its way down the circular, winding path deep inside the naked bedrock. Raina vaguely remembered that digging these tunnels had required significant superhuman exertion back in the day, but her Claremont training was very far from her mind as she descended, powerless, deeper into the mountain! The room where they finished, some two or three levels 'down', was more like a bunker with the thick, heavy steel door mounted into the rockface and the two armed blackguards stationed on either side. "Your parents will be arriving here in a forthcoming car from the lower levels," said Seven, her black costume a strange color in the glare of the artificial lights outside the meeting room. "Why don't you go ahead and step inside and wait for them?" she offered as the big, heavy door swung open.

The older man standing at the door was unfamiliar to Robin, his greying black mustache and hair, together with his suit and tie, probably typically gave him an air of dignified authority that was at odds with the startled look on his face. "Oh, ah, hello," he said cautiously as he looked Robin up and down, his eyebrows crinkling together. "You must be a friend of Riley's. I'm Casey Quinn, I'm Riley's father." From behind Robin came a strangled sort of noise, and turning around she realized it was her Riley, staring at the door like he'd seen a ghost. "...Dad?" Just behind him was Peyton, a look like flint in her eyes. "Well, look who the cat dragged in. I guess you got my message." She folded her arms and glared at the man, the house silent except for the sound of television.

The Deep One blinked both its sets of eyelids, looking edgily from Wander to Midnight and back again. "It...a trident. A ssspear with three blades, ssshowing Dagon, Hydra, and their children." It waved its long fingered arms and for a moment looked very much like Aquaria before it spoke in a tone unlike hers - Aquaria was never quite so conniving in her speech and manner. "The glowing trident appeared, the apossstate took it in her handsss, and she and the one that looks that you vanished. The priessst thought it wasss Dagon and Hydra banishing them, but, ha-ha, what are the odds that would happen while we were right here?" He looked at the Orb in Midnight's hand, then admitted, "The priestsss say it can open a doorway to Dagon and Hydra, but they ssssay that about every pretty bauble we common folk bring them."

What Seven wanted was Raina to submit to a magical scan that felt like spiders running up and down her skin (or so she told herself, anyway) while Seven chanted to herself in Latin and made arcane gestures in the air. Evidently satisfied by what she saw, she did the same thing for Bombshell before joining the two women for the walk through the outer perimeter of security, where another set of guards were waiting for them - this time with equipment. They were inside now, past the outer fence and gate, waiting next to what looked to Raina a little bit like a parking garage elevator, its walls thick and shiny. "These are standard magical nullifiers," said Seven, demonstrating them for Raina and Bombshell's benefit. "Worn on the wrists, they interfere with somatic gestures and they contain enough blessed cold iron and silver that casting spells with them is essentially impossible. I'm sorry, Sparkler," she said as she handed them to Raina apologetically, "I know how clean your record is, but given the circumstances, the prison's not willing to take any chances. We've had rumors of one escape attempt already."

"Yeah, prolly not," said Riley, watching Jane work with an unreadable expression. In the back of his mind, he was seeing darkened fists crashing through concrete barriers to get at the all-too-human beings on the other side. "Better get you offta see the headmaster. So whaddya do?" he asked her as they headed towards the administration building, the campus bustling with students of all shapes and sizes - almost literally! One mechanical teenager, his silvery body looking like something from a silent movie about robots, passed them with a nod, hardly looking up from his hand-written notes. "That trick. Just make yerself stronger, or what?"

"Yes. Though she wears blue." The lost members of the Allies of Freedom were not something Dimitri joked about, and for a moment he fell silent, looking down at his fuzzy reflection in his drink. "She has had the name for some time. You must be careful, young fellow. World can change around you quick, like child becomes woman." He swirled the liquid, watching the tiny few flakes of frozen condensation floating in the alcohol. "You know, I met fellow who was goddamned clone of Human Tank last year?" he suddenly asked Talya. "Little ublyudok in Washington says it was 'previous administration', huh. And British say 'previous government' authorized it, so goddamned clone of hero walks around like no one gives damn. But you probably hear about that from Ace, hnh?" He turned to Erik. "You fan of old days?" He smiled. "Go ahead! Ask anything, I tell you tales."

At Cavalier's words, holographic images of their two targets sprang into life. The aquatic humanoid seemed to leap in front of the 'camera', screaming something that the displayed subtitles read as "No! Leave her alone, you monster! Space is full of MONSTERS!" Neglecting the double tridents she held in two long-fingered, triple-digited hands, the amphibious creature dealt out a savage kick that knocked the 'camera' (now recognizable as a Star Knight's suit recorder) backwards some half-a-dozen feet. An instant later, a blue flash showed where the Star Knight had been stabbed from behind, the vitals displays on each side of the screen suddenly and almost immediately going dark. But the camera kept running, though, giving the Eclipse crew a clear look at both the green-armored aquatic woman and the person she was protecting - a semi-conscious, battered-looking humanoid who looked very familiar indeed to Captain Eclipse. She'd seen her before, tearing apart drones with her bare hands. "As you can imagine," the Grand Nauarchus was saying, "we're very concerned about that kind of technology in the hands of unknown Terrans - especially what appears to be a Class Five clone of the woman code-named Wander. Some of our scientists believe that the modified Spectrum Knight armor allows the wielder to tap directly into the Zero Zone, putting potentially unlimited power in the hands of people with a decidedly limited view of the Galaxy and its citizens."

"Fightin'," said Riley laconically as Naomi introduced herself, trusting Jane could both read and carry on a conversation at the same time. He didn't know the mute girl that well, but he was full of sympathy for her condition. A disability like hers would have been very problematic on his homeworld, where clear and rapid communication was sometimes all that saved your life, and the life of everyone else. And he also knew what it meant to be trapped in a body that just wasn't right. "And huntin'. Nobody's better at it than me here." That much was certainly true, even if some people here on campus could have kicked his ass within an inch of his life without trying too hard. Well, he corrected himself mentally, not that many.

"And you'd do this why, out of the goodness of your heart?" challenged Freebooter. "Are you really such a white hat you'd just upload me with no strings attached, just because you feel like doing something good?" She could feel the rage, the defensiveness creeping into his radio-projected voice, all the emotions McGinnis hid as Freebooter in costume. "I don't want to be another one of your charity cases, dammit!" But he hadn't said no yet either... - There were no immediate response to Argonaut's message - but Miracle Girl got a response. "That makes sense," agreed Hanson to Miracle Girl, the bearded sergeant who had been tagged as Magpie by Cannonade's memory. "Gentlemen, I suggest we take him directly to the base hospital at the Pentagon. That's both shielded from outside attack and has the facilities to handle superhuman care. If this man is a superhuman." His aura was smooth and professional, and soon the military escort was helping the medevac team prep McGinnis for travel, with Miss A next on the triage list.

Paradigm wound up having to beat Bie Yie bloody to finally force him to surrender, his armor cracked and sparking bizarre energies that didn't look anything like Star Knight energies to her eyes. Even now it wasn't so much that he's surrendered as he'd been beaten into unconsciousness, eerily silent now that they were out on the ocean and away from his fellow Knights. When she returned, she found that the Spectrum Knight facility had been locked down by her fellow Praetorians and their Star Knight ally. The prisoners, held in an emergency stockade in the middle of what had once been their parade ground, were a sullen lot, made up of the most despised species in Lor space, glaring sullenly out at the heroes who had defeated their plot. There were families in the stockade too, mates and children, weeping at the horror they'd all survived. Only one tower, gleaming a brilliant salmon, still towered above the shattered remains of the complex - all of it destroyed by the orbital bombardment that Cavalier had been investigating. Cavalier and Traveler, meanwhile, had finally managed to get through to Mentor and track their location - they were over the edge of Lor space into what had formerly been Khanate territory, a wild, contested region that the Republic had officially promised to keep its troops out of. That didn't apply to the Star Knights of course, but it did mean things could get tricky if any number of regional warlords found out they were there. Of course, said warlord would have to explain what a Spectrum Knight base was doing in their territory in the first place. The Lor commander Traveler managed to reach promised to send word directly to the Grand Nauarchus herself - proof of just how seriously the Republic took this incident.

For all Raina's worries about a witch hunt on board ship, no one looked too closely at the teenage witch on the ride out to the prison. If anything, the boat crew seemed more interested in the very pretty, and very famous, Bombshell. An older woman who seemed to be the boat's pilot turned out to have been a guard in one of the women's blocks during Talya's time in prison, but with her interest in taking a picture for her kids, she seemed to let bygones be bygones. The ride out was smooth underneath them, the sea like glass beneath and the sky blue like sapphire overhead. The good times lasted until they reached the dock - where someone was waiting to meet them. Raina remembered Seven, the witch (and other things that she knew Talya didn't like to hear) on the Freedom League, a member of the attack on her parents' home that had brought her old life to an abrupt and painful end. In her black costume, cape draped behind her, Seven looked every inch the dark magical avenger of the night. "Ms. Sanderson, Bombshell," said Seven with a polite nod as they disembarked. "I don't think we've met, Bombshell, I'm Seven. I'm here to let you know that I'll be, ah, facilitating the meeting with your parents today. We've had some concerns about security, so I'm here to make sure everything goes...smoothly." She arched an eyebrow.

A Still More Glorious Dawn Awaits (IC)
Avenger Assembled replied to Avenger Assembled's topic in Known Space
The arm came off in Singularity's hands. For some reason, this didn't strike her as terribly unusual. What was unusual was there was no blood or sound of cracking bone, just the startled look on the man's face as he pulled away, mechanical limb twisting in her implacable grasp. Soon that startlement turned to fury, however, as slippery black fluid poured from his billowing sleeve, transforming itself into a tentacled dark limb until the humanoid digit Singularity had accidentally pulled away. "BOUNTY HUNTERS!?" he declared, bellowing a malignant laugh as his left eye glowed with unnatural eldritch energies. "YOU THINK BOUNTY HUNTERS CAN STOP THE CHURCH OF THE MUTILATED GOD?!" As he shouted, face flushing white and mustache shaking, the barflies were sensibly retreating behind Ruby Voxxx, the hero of the hour. "I WILL DESTROY YOU ALL!"- 60 replies

"Gotta stay in shape," said Riley, tilting his head and rubbing the joint of his shoulder. "Do lotta stuff up in trees, fightin', huntin', gotta practice even when I'm not learnin' stuff. Don't have any powers ta make it easy." He gave her a challenging look for a moment, as if expecting a response to that, then relented. "Houston, that's in...Texas, right? Whatmadja come here?"
