  1. "Things aren't as they should be for us, either. Normally I'd send a Republic Intelligence taskforce to assist you," this would be a destroyer or two, and ground personnel to go with it, "but we've tracked their escape from the forward Spectrum Knight base and it's taken into unaligned space along the old Khanate border. Current policy renders military deployment into Khanate space inadvisable at this time. The Senate prefers to maintain peace with the new regimes." She smiled thinly and folded her hands in front of her, her opinion on that subject clear but kept perfectly professional all the same. "So how about it, Captain Eclipse?" she asked the Horizon's commanding officer, still smiling. "Can your crew handle this mission? Cavalier tells me that you're the best in the business."
  2. "You don't sound too bad yourself," said Riley with a grin, kissing Robin on top of her head. He'd fought enough with his own hair that he was happy to shave, but Robin's hair was one of the many very cute things about her. "Could listen to you read the phonebook." He wasn't sure what that phrase meant, exactly, but he'd heard men say it to women on his homeworld so he said it here. He turned himself back to the conversation everyone else was having and realized he was equally lost. Riley had no idea what Phaedra was talking about - but he could understand the horns, and the flames, and the wings... "So are yademon, or what?" he asked the question out of curiosity, the same way he'd have asked someone what neighborhood they were from.
  3. "'Cept for Mechano but he's all right," said a new voice tipped towards the contralto, dropping down from a nearby tree in the middle of the quad. Short and wiry, Riley looked up at Jane and sighed inwardly. Another girl taller than me! He ran his hand over his shaved head, his dark skin gleaming slightly from sweat. "You see that, Cathy?" he asked her, rubbing his left arm. "Ten minutes with one arm, with a full pack!" In his green poncho and with a crossbow over his back, the boy looked ready for a hike through the woods. He grinned, looking pleased with himself, before looked up at Jane and offering her a strong, callused hand. "Riley Quinn-Smith. Welcome t'Claremont. We're s'posedta give ya the tour 'n show you the 'dmistress." His accent was odd by the the standards of Freedom City - clearly American English from the pronunciation, but with the words shoved together like the bolts in a crossbow's repeating magazine. "Where ya from?"
  4. "Yes, thank you," said Peyton with a calm levelness in her tone that didn't make her sound much like Riley at all - or maybe it did, when Robin listened closely to the nervous energy that vibrated at the edges of the woman's speech. This was what Riley might be like in a decade or three, with that crackling fire banked and redirected by life. If he lived that long. When the food was in the oven (and only needing the occasional monitoring from Peyton or the other two in the house, though it was Peyton who insisted on doing most of that double-checking), the family adjourned to the living room to watch football. Peyton and her Riley were both Heroes fans, and sitting on the couch next to her Robin's Riley admitted he liked the game too. "All it needs'just the green space, right? We did it on the plant lawn with flags 'n stuff." The two boys talked to their mother (and Riley talked to Robin), but the tension between them was still there - they didn't seem to have much to say to one another. Around the first quarter of the game, there was a knock at the door that caught Peyton in the kitchen with Riley, and another Riley upstairs. "Can you get that, Robin?" called Peyton.
  5. "Wait a minute, wait a minute," said Anna Cline from the hallway entrance, giving Daphne a very suspicious look. "Did you say Grue? You let a Grue into your house on-" "Nana, no!" said Holly, turning bright red and clapping her hand to her mouth in obvious shame, shiny new Apple Watch or not. "Miss Grue is so cool!" "Ma and I are just gonna take a little walk around the neighborhood," said an embarrassed Richard firmly, taking his mother's arm politely as they headed out the front of the house. "We'll be back in a little while." The group inside the house caught just the tail end of Anna's "She's actually called-!?" before the front door closed behind them.
  6. Technically this was Cavalier's case, Cavalier's mission, Cavalier's dead comrade - but the Grand Nauarchus just kept talking. "We've called you here because of the murder of Glort Ziolon, a canid from Rassilon in the service of the Star Knight Corps." She pressed a few buttons on the central table and produced an image of a dog-faced humanoid, first posed proudly in what looked like an official holo, then reposing peacefully in death. "We believe the killers are members of the Spectrum Knight Corps, a terroristic organization that's been working to undermine recovery in the Republic for the last several months - as well as operating in secret bases among the Grue and the old Khanate." She took a seat and steepled her fingers, looking around at the mercenaries. "We would like to hire your group to assist Cavalier and elements of the Star Navy in capturing these two rogues. Given the penalties for terrorism after the fall of Lor-Van, and the murder of a Star Knight, I think you'll find that for this assignment, we can match the last...what was it, three or four payments you've received on the open market?"
  7. Take an HP if you like, Kimber! Note that the Illusion only affects her if anyone else comes looking - they don't hear anything other than the panicking sounds of the Power Corps.
  8. Well, that certainly got the reaction Ghost Girl was looking for! The already-nervous Five screamed in terror right through the mechanical vodor of his helmet before running until he hit the back of the bank vault, covering his head as he called out Catholic prayers at the top of his voice. Five and Two swore blindly and began retreating hastily the other way, yelling "It's awake! It's awake! Everybody fall back!" "No, dammit, don't run!" called One, readying a weapon in shaky hands that he aimed at the demon. "We've done this thing before, we know their weaknesses! 3 and 7, you stay with the hostages - if anything comes in there that isn't us, you shoot and run!" But the Power Corps' escort tilted his head and studied the 'demon', his masked face invisible, and suddenly pressed his hand against the side of his temple - "Scheisse! It didn't work!" he called to the others, dropping his hand to his side, backing up into the vault in a fright. Behind him, Four was pulling a weapon from the holster at his belt, a big, heavy-looking pistol like the one that Kimber had seen while visiting, and with a tone of religious awe and terror in his voice, he sobbed, "I'll save you! I'll save you all!" He shot the psychic in the back, the heavy armored bullets bursting their way through the man's midsection and out the front, a spray of blood falling harmlessly through Kimber's phantasmal torso. As One turned, startled, Four shot him, too, this time through the head in a spray of metal and bone as the heavy slugs tore through the armor of the man's helmet, sending the Power Corps commander crashing abruptly to the floor. And then, Four pressed the barrel of the gun to his chin and declared "I'm a hero!"

  10. Well, at this point he's not a PL 10 character in combat. I wonder if you could put Accurate 2 on his Mimic so he's PL 10 when using the power? Even that would give him +10 with that +10 DMG from Density, etc.
  11. Hmm. Is there a way for you to get him up to caps, I wonder? Even a little accurate on that Mimic (possibly from his immunities for the moment) could work wonders.
  12. Riley's right hand twitched slightly in Robin's, but as surprising as Raina looked, she wasn't one of the faces he saw in his nightmares. So the hatchet stayed in its holster and the party kept on going, even if his heart was now beating considerably faster. "Jeez! I'll drink t'that, Sanderson." He tossed back his blackberry wine in one gulp, the alcohol burning its way down his throat, and coughed slightly against the potency of his own brew. "You got the legs too," he noticed, looking the zombie girl up and down. "Keep that'n mind. Lil' wet and bright, though. Whatdja do, diena paint shop?"
  13. Woodsman needed to see inside those crates - but how to do it with the guards circling the warehouse, and him without his nightvision gear? After a moment's consideration, he slid a smoke arrow into his crossbow and stood from behind the crates, firing a silent shaft at the office door still covered in police tape, the landmark furthest from his position in the darkened warehouse that he could clearly see. Despite the dim lightning, he struck the door (albeit low and to one side), bolt sinking deep into the soft wood as he ducked down next to the Venerado crates again. Within seconds, a cloud of stinking smoke was erupting through the building, emitting a strong stretch as it activated the sensors inside the room's many active smoke alarms. As the air howled with sirens and the guards began to curse and cough against the smoke in the air (and hopefully get themselves away from the sudden fire), Riley began working slowly and carefully, blind himself against the crate, working it open and waiting for the smoke to clear enough to see what lay inside.

  16. Gina sprung into action, driving the pointed barbs of her taser directly into the flesh of the nearest 'police officer', who she realized, with a feeling of sick horror, looked exactly like all the other officers. Perhaps that was why the electricial discharge, for all that she could see it working and even feel the hum of the inner batteries charging the makeshift device, didn't seem to phase the man for a second! He didn't so much as smile in triumph as he reached for her again, an instant before glowing black Terminus energy shrieked past the man's head, the sound up close almost deafening as it blasted a hole in one of the nearby SWAT cars blocking the other side of the street. The blast had come so close that Gina could see the clone's hair had actually caught on fire! It would be the last time Harrier missed deliberately that day. "Run." he pronounced as he advanced on the clones menacing Gina, heedless of the screaming civilians elsewhere on the street.
  17. Ghost Girl found that she and her friends had called the situation in the bank down to a T. The most that could be said for the Power Corps robbery was that they were professionals - the bank tellers and other personnel were zip-tied in the back conference room, while the patrons were standing with their backs to the glass against the front entrance, the better to put a quick and memorable stop to any attempt to force through the frosted glass. Two of the Power Corps (3 and 7 from the numbers on their helmets) were standing watch over the staff and the customers, one in the back room and one in the lobby, trading places every few minutes in what was obviously a prearranged schedule. The other four (1, 2, 4, and 5) were back at the Vault, where Five and Four were just opening the vault door, their armors glowing with the light of readied weapons. The bank manager lay unconscious at the feet of a figure Kimber didn't immediately recognize, a black-clad man in a jumpsuit that made him look like a ninja. He carried no weapon, however, and seemed to be scanning the hallway, head turning back and forth, finger pressed to his temple. When he spoke to 1, it was with a young man's voice, low and urgent, with the timbre of command. "There's someone here - I can't see her exactly, but I can feel her presence." He was not looking at Kimber - but he wasn't looking _away_ from her, either. "Damn!" swore One. "We're out of time! Everyone fall back to the main room. Four, Five, there's no time to search - just plant the charges!" "But we'll set the book on fire!" protested Four, earning him a cuff from the larger Five. "Don't be an idiot! You heard what they said, that thing's not gonna mind a little Willy Pete! Get to it, soldier!"
  18. "I'll talk to Dimitri. Damn his eyes, he said he thought all the Russians in town knew to behave themselves," Jack muttered to himself. Steepling his hands, he said to Nicola, "We do not typically destroy each other - but there are crimes among us that mortal laws have no powers to punish." Typically, for the sake of Jack's soul, if nothing else, that meant a semi-permanent exile to the Void - but there was no reason to dwell on that in front of the new arrival. "Can you tell us about what happened to you?" He phrased the question, and made it a question, for the sensibilities of a young religious who might have been through a grim fate before she came to his door.
  19. The Horizon crew found themselves with a smiling young junior officer named Garrek as their escort, a fresh-faced young Lor male in a saffron uniform who promised to escort them directly to the Grand Nauarchus and the Star Knight who had summoned them with a substantial offer of reward. The Grand Shipyards were certainly bustling with activity - the crowded corridors they passed were especially impressive when you considered how large the facility itself was. "Well, this is the largest single facility left to the Star Navy," commented the young man with a combination of youthful nerves and the edge of a too-adult grief, a grief felt by tens of billions across Lor space these days. "And between the Grand Nauarchus's time mapping the Outer Rim, and her years fighting the old Khanate and the Grue, and the years she spent as commandant of the Academy, almost half of the senior officers in the fleet have served under her command at one time or another. I was on my first rotation at the helm of her flagship when Lor-Van fell." - "Welcome, welcome," said the Grand Nauarchus with a maternal smile as she greeted the Horizon crew. "I'm Grand Nauarchus Bucklin Frankan, welcome to the Shipyards. I believe you already know Cavalier of the Star Knights?" She gestured for them all to take seats around the main conference table - there had at least been a space set aside for Rock to stand. "Before we begin, on behalf of the people of the Lor Republic and the servicebeings of the Star Navy, I want to thank you all for what you did in the war against the Communion. Your reconnaissance into the Khanate was invaluable in our intelligence-gathering on the enemy - and Captain Eclipse, my marine CO, Colonel Kavit, was at Garron-9, and he credits what you did there with saving the lives of every sentient in his squad."

  21. "You are concerned that this might happen whenever I leave the house," Steve told her with a quiet warmth, their conversation too quiet for anyone to overhear. "I will be fine," he told her, which was true enough. He peered over at the wrecked restaurant for a moment, trying to suss out the scene there and figure out if he was needed. "They have dug Bombshell out from under the restaurant and she appears to be largely unhurt, but the impact appears to have removed her clothing." He thought for a moment, then realized he had no idea how that could have happened. "What happened here tonight?" he asked her as the shadow of Geckoman's Tyrannosaurus Rex passed over them. "You came for me, as I knew you would - but what else?"
  22. "It truly is the mightiest of desserts," agreed Steve, "dominating the table with its power." He had made the assumption that was the reason for the outsize dish when Gina had ordered it - an assumptions reinforced by his friend's reaction. For all that the robot could hold up the chocolates forever, he opted not to anchor Gina to the object for long. "Where shall we put this?" Knowing what Gina would prefer, he let Miss Americana place the dessert, trusting that she would appreciate a moment or two away from the conversation. After all, he understood that sort of difficulty all too well. Ducking his head, he added below, "Good evening, Gina," with a polite nod to Erik's mother. "I don't believe you have met my woman, Miss Americana."
  23. Well, that was fast! said Frost's face to Talya. He had predicted they might be able to pry something useful out of the godly scion of Donar, but not so far and so quickly! Still, he was never one to turn down such a chance. "My every need, you say! Well then," he said aloud, "I shall take your offer of safe conduct, let us take small journey to large realm." He turned to Talya and said, "Will you be so kind as to accompany us on short excursion, Bombshell? Choosers of Slain may be more inclined to speak to ladies of war than old Frost. They have heard tales of my ways, I am sure!" He laughed, hands in his parka pockets.
  24. "That planet's been nothing but trouble since First Contact." She winced and put a hand to her forehead, her pale, lined skin coloring. "Present company excepted, of course," she added with an apologetic nod and maternal smile to Cavalier. "If it was up to me, we'd have invited your people into the Republic back when we could have really helped you improve your culture. But I'll help you do everything in my power to make sure we catch those criminals before they do any more harm." She turned and studied the display again, her spine ramrod-straight beneath her uniform despite being at least a hundred years old. "The Star Navy will find a way. And your private contractors, naturally." She did not like the word mercenary.
  25. "Look at you three," said Dimitri sociably, spreading his arms and smiling warmly. "Would melt heart of man whose heart was not made of ice." He patted his chest, where Talya at least knew a truly impressive scar lay where his heart had once been. "I tell you this, such a delectable fellow deserves some chocolate." He reached into his pocket and produced the very giant-size chocolate bar he had just stolen from their upstairs and handed it off to Jack, the chocolate having frozen solid in his pocket. "Must be season for romance among American superheroes. Three of you, young associate of mine courts dark wizardess, heir to Renard Rouge has that wendigo from Canada, young godling courts young man of dreams, what a country!" He hmmed, and suddenly realized he couldn't think of a single 'regular' (as he still thought of them) couple among them - then dismissed that as simply modern life for you. "But the life has always been so. Children of people Talya and I knew in old days are grandparents themselves. Such is time, eh?"
