  8. "Argh!" Mastermind growled in surprise, clutching at his face, his aristocratic bearing stolen from him in a moment of surprise. The heroes couldn't see his face behind his full silvery mask, but as he wobbled briefly in the air, it was clear he couldn't see them, either. "Maître!" declared the Fire, flames coiling at her fingers. "Si vous ne serez pas parler avec le Maître , vous allez parler avec ses atavismes lieu !" She hurled a ball of flame at Spellbound's eyes, trying to repay her tit-for-tat, a flash of fire that exploded harmlessly in Miss Americana's face when the fast-moving patriotic paragon intercepted the blast with her own body. "Merde!" she added in a fiery curse when her blast had no effect. She took off into the air, leaving a flaming trail behind her as she went. Suddenly, a shadowy form appeared behind Spellbound - a tall, angular woman dressed all in black, her bone-white skin a contrast to a tightly-fitting black jumpsuit and cape, her eyes rimmed with black kohl and short black hair in a bun atop her head. "You strike a king, you best kill him, girl!" she taunted before hurling a blast of her own at the helpless Spellbound - a wave of slow-moving shadowy flame that erupted from her hands towards the pregnant former villain. "By the flaming shades of der Schattenwelt!" Bombshell leaped forward to catch this one and caught the flame across her torso, and - disintegrated. As Talya's ashes hit the ground, the Beast pulled himself to his feet. "Oh merde , regardez ce que vous avez fait aujourd'hui !" he shouted at the Darkness before leaping over to where Dragonfly was still pulling herself out of the crater, wrapping a massive arm around Dragonfly's neck, so close she could smell his sweat and blood all mixed together. "You had better stop before I throw this one into the sewers!" he called to the other heroes. The last of the Atavisms made his appearance now - flying quickly on what turned out to be a miniature white dragon. In his traditional Chinese robes and immobile white mask, the Withering landed behind the Beast, turning to hurl a blast of glowing white light into the Beast's back, making the powerhouse's already-healing wounds zip closed even faster, as if his healing was being accelerated as if he'd been placed on fast-forward! "Or you will wither," he hissed in a stage whisper that reached the ears of the heroes, heedless of Talya's still-drifting ashes.

  12. That hits! Reflex save vs 18: 11
  13. Jack of all Blades slipped through silvery-bright corridors that would have looked out of place in 2015, never mind the rugged West of the 1850s! The corridors were surprisingly empty, but on the other hand it made sense that the local thugs working for the Master were confined to wherever it was they were making the cybernetic corridors, didn't get access to the goodies. Peering around, Jack could find some interesting things as he explored the single level of the spaceship. One open sliding door revealed the laboratory where the dinosaurs were being made. Hiding out, Jack could see the bones being lowered (by means of a weirdly out-of-place rope and pulley system that had obviously been brought in by the workers) into a glowing, soupy vat of chemicals that disgorged comatose, wriggling dinosaurs that were then loaded by another vast pulley system through a porthole that clearly led to wherever the cyborging was taking place. But the smooth inner walls of the spaceship didn't offer him much in the way of clues as to Steve's location, or the location of the Master and his 'Four' - at least until a sliding door opened just as he walked past, nearly colliding full-tilt with a woman in black who was just coming out. He caught a quick glimpse of Steve, shirtless and chained to the wall, as the door snapped shut too quickly for him to leap through. She was long and lean, her Victorian dress the same reflective black as her hair and eyes, and at the sight of Jack she swore in explosive French before demanding, "Where in Satan's name did you come from?", crackling magic beginning to pool around her fingers. - Meanwhile, there was wild confusion in the dinosaur paddock! Some of the T-Rexes did indeed go stampeding down through the valley, their drivers generally fleeing in terror towards their barracks or hanging on and screaming for dear life as their maddened cyborg rides fled in terror and rage! The Batalie brothers made their move on the tent barracks, a quick rattle of gunfire from over there telling the heroes that they wouldn't have to worry about any rallying from the hired mercenaries in this part of the valley! Geckoman and Echo had bigger problems, anyway - three giant ones! Three of the riders had managed to scramble aboard their mounts and keep control of them despite the stampede, and now the trio were closing in on Geckoman and Echo, the ground shaking as the massive lizards (oddly featherless given recent paleontological discoveries...) charged. The T-Rexes themselves were all slightly different; the one on the left of Geckoman was missing a forearm, the one directly facing him had nearly bone-white scales under its armor, and the third, closest to Echo, was noticeably larger than the other two. The riders were yelling something on board their T-Rexes, but nothing could be heard over the roaring of dinosaurs and echo of gunfire from the mercenaries camp as the battle began amid a din of noise, the stink of blood and enraged animals, and drifting clouds of smoke and dust!

  15. Paradigm spoke, even as another blast from the orbital bombardment shook the entire complex. A few of the Spectrum Knights seemed to be listening, as were the other heroes and Praetorians involved in the police action, but the former seemed skeptical at best of the paragon's words. But Aquaria, Jessie, and the other Spectrum Knights, relying on the translating program in the Spectrum Knight complex, heard something very different. "I am Paradigm of the Praetorians. We came here to destroy the enemies of galactic peace - the Spectrum Knights, who freed a criminal revolutionary from his just sentence. We do not wish to harm anyone. Surrender and lay down your arms, and we will ensure you will be fairly and justly tried, and given a proper sentence for your crimes." "You see!?" demanded Bie Yie of his fellow Knights. "You see what their peace is!? Run while you still can, my friends! I'll hold them off!" A vessel launched itself from the hanger just then, a small shuttlecraft that made a desperate swerve around Paradigm, forcing her to get out of the way before the fragile craft could splatter itself against her invulnerable body. "
  16. Have an HP for doing the heroic thing, Paradigm! Traveller is up.
  17. Jack Faretti diplomatically let Ellie and the other volunteer taste-testers sample that Ellis guy's absolutely repulsive-smelling garlic steak, a name that sounded like a bad joke and probably tasted like one too. "Just a few bites of each," he joked lightly from behind his sunglasses, "like we're wine tasting." Instead, he concentrated first on Richard Cline's steakburgers, which he made a game show of chewing up and swallowing, and even washing down with a little beer. Erik Espadas' shwarma came next, and he once again took a few careful bites that he finished off with some beer. "Well," he said, turning to his fellow judges and staying carefully neutral on what he'd just eaten, "what do you think?"
  18. Dragonfly's proximity alarms suddenly went crazy - the wild beeping that told her of a bogey, incoming fast! But before she could reach, suddenly something grabbed her in the sky, hard enough that the alarms screaming now were damage sensors as plates buckled and energy crackled against her own skin. A moment later, the force pulled her out of the sky, smashing her against the concrete just a few feet away from the melee with the Beast with tremendous force, actually digging a crater in the pavement like a child falling into packed snow. But this was not snow, but steel and asphalt! This was another damaging blow, hard enough now that some of the alarms had gone quiet - because of just how much damage the armor itself had taken! "HOLD!" declared Dragonfly's assailant as he revealed himself - and revealed that the heroes were in a great deal of trouble. A god had come to the West End; his silvered full-face mask, his red and black costume, his billowing black cape - this could only be Mastermind, the mighty would-be world-conqueror who had fought the Freedom League, the Vanguard, and many of the other mightiest teams of global heroes. "There need be NO war between us! My Atavisms and I have come on this day to SAVE all of mankind from the greatest of all the foes of humanity - the TERMINUS!"
  19. Okay, Spellbound is up
  20. Riley had expected praise for his one-in-a-million shot when he emerged from the forest, but by the time he'd made his way back to rejoin his friends he'd heard what they'd had to say about his strategies. Rather than chew them out while they were in the field, he settled for a short "That's stupid," before studying the cage. "Okay, uh, here's an idea. This is something for catching someone from other dimensions, right? And it runs on electricity?" Even as he spoke, Riley was working on his crossbow, setting it down on the grassy patch at their feet and kneeling over it. "So you use something that drains electricity, like copper from another dimension..." Taking a length of shiny black cable from his belt, he secured one end to a bolt which he fired deep into the ground, then took the other in his hand and tossed it at the cage, targeting Phantom herself as closely as he could. "And you give that power somewhere to go!" When the lightning bars crackling around the cage had died down to a more manageable level, Riley took out two more bolts, insulated them with his heavy gloves, and lodged them in the sides of the cage to lift it up, straining his muscles as he tugged against the device's bizarre weight. "Can you...get underneath?"
  21. Riley tried to loosen his tightly-wound anger, aware it was impressing neither of his companions. The unfairness of it still gnawed at him, though, as he watched the dog chew up the sandwich and kept rear watch as their little group entered the alley. He'd seen, and eaten, worse things than this in bad times when the harvest hadn't come in or the scavenging was poor. Hell, he'd helped shovel crap onto the fields personally during planting time. But that was different. People lived the way they did at Raymond because there was nothing better than what they had, because it was all they had left. People lived this way here because other people didn't let them have enough.
  22. Aquaria waited as long as possible before she put on the hateful Surfacer device, burning with shame at her tribe's inherited weakness in the temple of their gods. When they actually caught sight of the Surfacers, though, she put pride aside and fitted the device over her face, the breather smelling of the Surfacer canine it had originally belonged to. At the sight of her people's enemies in the temples of their gods, she swam with powerful strokes before the group of interlopers and pointed at them, not for the first time missing the trident she'd lost in her fight with Nereid upon her arrival on the Surface. Shouting in Surfacer, she declared, "Wretched outlanders! Your blood is not fit to stain these exalted walls! Flee now or be beaten, devourers of excrement!"
  23. Riley poured a small glass of iced hard lemonade for Robin, and then after a moment's thought himself. He wasn't a drinker personally - but how could he avoid a toast with his fine lady? "Cheers," he said, raising his glass and clinking it against hers before tossing his head back for a long drink. The hard lemonade was fizzy and sweet, but he could certainly feel the kick of the alcohol inside. "Much better'n rotgut," he pronounced, giving Robin a cheerful grin.
