"Hmm. Well, it looks like the two of you won the argument." Fischler, like many a new police detective, was obviously doing her best to seem professional - even in the face of the figurative tornado of Set's personality and the quite literal tornado that was Thrude! "Hey, is that Stratos and Weather Mistress? It is!" Her face actually lit up at that, at least until she evidently reminded herself that she was on the job. "Er...well, this is good news. Providence has had a lot of trouble with Stratos escaping; maybe this will get them to put him back in lockup where he belongs. Ever since Weather Mistress and her husband the Mad Maple left the Thieves' Guild, she and her husband have been a thorn in the side of law enforcement all through North America."

In a timely fashion, the front door rang. Ding-dong, ding-dong! Pulling up the security camera outside was easy enough given all the high technology in the room - and standing outside on the front porch was the person who had rung the bell. He was a new face for the kids, but after several moments of looking Trevor and Erin could recognize him easily enough - though it was a face they had not seen in ages! Quark, for it was clearly their former Claremont colleague, had grown into a tall, slender young man who appeared to be in his late twenties - his rainbow-colored hair had been cut into a short crewcut and his face had lost most of its adolescent discoloration, but there was no mistaking those flashing golden eyes or that familiar posture as he rocked back and forth, patiently waiting for the door to open. He wore a black, unlabeled jumpsuit and carried an artifact, a long staff that bore an hourglass on the end; which at the moment he was tossing back and forth from hand to hand as he waited.

"How dare you! I-WHOOP!" In the middle of rounding on Set, now with a smoking hole in her cape, Miss Americana had suddenly been attacked from behind by Caradoc! Knowing the robot's design, Steve was able to pin it against his armored chest, his sword coming up in front of her shoulders and pinning her arms in place. "You must not breach her skin!" Caradoc called, Steve thinking fast to cover for his girlfriend's secret - unfortunately confronted with the hard reality that he was a poor choice for such deceptions. She is so much better at this than I am. "Her powers come from...American radiation! Hence the red, white, and blue lasers!" I am lying and they know I am lying - look at their faces! He tore himself away from contemplating his failures to try and stop the rampaging robotic powerhouse. "If you breach her skin, she might EXPLODE in a shower of gamma particles and turn this park into a blighted cinder!"

That hits, whether or not she's flat-footed or not, but it's important to see if it passes! vs. Feint: http://invisiblecastle.com/roller/view/4620668/ = 26 Her defense drops to 14, giving Set +3 Since there's some question about whether or not her vulnerability applies here, I'll split the difference and say it applies half! vs Drain: Reflex vs DC 23 (DC 17+3 Autofire+3 50% bonus) http://invisiblecastle.com/roller/view/4620671/ = 27! She actually rolls quite well vs. Damage: Tou vs DC (7+15=23+3+3=DC 29) http://invisiblecastle.com/roller/view/4620675/ = DC 21 All right, bruised and dazed on the robot- 49 replies

"And so I shall," agreed Miss Americana, advancing on Southern Belle with intent burning in her eyes. "I've kept her bottled away since her death all those years ago, and back to the prison will she go. Come now, Mary," she went on, sounding honestly curious at her would-be victim's terror. "If you go above, you'll see her. If you go below, you'll see him. Better an eternity with me than your eternal reward." "Ah never...ah never meant to kill them," replied Southern Belle, her voice still shaking with fear as she confessed a sin beyond the understanding of anyone there. "He just wouldn't...wouldn't ever leave them alone! Not any of them, and especially not her!" Her pretty teeth set in that snarl again, and for a moment they could actually see the face of the policewoman beneath the ghost, as if her rage and terror were distracting her from the business of possession. "Always walking around with that look in her eye, and oh she may have said she hated it but I knew she must be a fallen woman to tempt him so!" She looked around, pleading for mercy from a world that had rejected hers a century and half earlier, even as Miss Americana moved in close for...something, it was hard to say what. "I knew he was doing it, again and again, every moment mah eyes weren't on him! When Ah came back, after Appomattox, Ah caught them together again, and he tried to apologize, and tell me it was all a big misunderstandin'! So Ah grabbed him by his lying mouth and I..." Her hands tightened into fists and she went on. "And then she started screaming, and I held her down until she was quiet, and then...then I didn't have the powers anymore, and the plantation was smashed, and it was all for nothing!"

Parker Psion was a Holocaust refugee - a Jewish eugenicist and scientific prodigy who emigrated to the United States in 1939 at the age of twenty-one. The Psions will often play games with heroes, testing them to learn more about their morals and heroic code, and sometimes will steal genetic samples for who knows what nefarious purpose.

Well, since that's not much, I can say this - the Psions are a family of meta-supremacist terrorists that's been active since the 1960s. The patriarch of the family, Parker Psion, recently committed >suicide by superhero and several members were arrested. Aura and Jump 'Joshua' Psion were not among them.

Kyogen flicked her wrist and a blade sprung into her hand - expressionless behind her porcelain mask, she drove the blade into the base of Cho's throat without breaking stride. "Quiet, child," she said bluntly, "adults are talking." The blade sunk into Cho's flesh, poison dripping from the wound, but soon became stuck in Cho's invulnerable skin, ultimately doing no more than a papercut. "Ah, damn," she said, sounding as annoyed as if she'd stubbed her toe, "I liked that knife." "Heyheyhey!" Clock Queen was exclaiming, her weapon in her hand like lightning, "Settlethehelldownyou-" Suddenly, the near-fight between the villains was interrupted by the arrival of the heroes - or as close as South Africa had these days, anyway. There were four of them; an armored man in orange, white, and blue, a woman in a black and white insectile costume, a dark-suited figure snapping open a rifle, and a woman in jeweled robes just in the middle of saying "-port!" "All right, you lot!" said the armored figure, exclamations of "Voortrekker!" coming from the already-fleeing crowd, the policeman Thoughtspeed had rescued leading the escape. "We've had enough of you, you bloody Yank criminals! It's time to put an end to your reign of terror. Today the Jet Patrol unites and fights for a free, WHITE South Africa!" And with that, the battle was on.

D42: This was Operation Rorschach - there are holographic programs in here that would have let the team go as far as 'Berlin in 1933', where they would have been presented with a moral dilemma. To prevent the bad future, the heroes would have had to kill Hitler, all the Nazi Party leaders, and their families; while the latter all begged for their lives. Either way, everything was recorded, and the Psions had plans to sell the footage to other villains as well as use it in their own research. Aura Psion, the woman who taunted them earlier, is mentioned as an illusionist whose powers will 'supplement' the holograms. Avorez: There's less to find here, most of these are leftovers from when this was a real warehouse. You do find what appears to have been Aura Psion's 'scratchpad' - she's been drawing pictures in blue and black ink of two young women pulled apart by monsters, reaching futiley for each other despite all that. There's one more sheet that is a little odd - a handwritten yellow notepad that is just "JOSHUA PSION" written over and over and over again in the same handwriting

With no risk of the team being crushed by a helicopter, with her boyfriend backing her up from below, with the French troops on their side and Midnight about to provide air support, Nina took to the sky to intercept her father and her siblings. Their conversation might have been too high to be overheard - except that Typhoon and his escorts approached close enough to the carrier that their shouts could be heard even over the gathering storm overhead. "WHY!" Nina demanded, and for all her fear of her father, darkly magnificent in blue-white armor that now showed significant battle-scarring from his fight with the French Navy, she was imperious as the princess she was when demanding answers from a king, her eyes red as blood as she confronted Typhoon himself. "Because these simpering FOOLS interfered with the application of Socotran justice!" He was still noticeably favoring the side he'd been stabbed in only a few hours earlier. "I am TYPHOON, the storm made flesh, and I shall fly where I will, be it over their fleet or anywhere else!" "What justice?!" Nina demanded, fists clenched in fury. "This is no kingly war of equals, this is a tyrant's tirade! You would do what, flood a nation because someone tried to kill you? Someone you once laid with and produced a-" "Keep your place, sister!" That was Kirogi, recognizable as the second-youngest, by his faint lisp and accented English - he'd adopted it while working for Japan's Imperial Resistance army. "None may question the will of Typhoon! Have you no honor left after you laid with that American dog?" "Careful, Kirogi," said Typhoon with a wave of his hand. "For your liasons have been no more pleasing in the eyes of Typhoon!" He looked at Nina and extended his hand. "Come join us again, daughter. You made a mistake once, but such errors can be rectified." Nina hesitated, diplomacy from her father evidently something with which she was completely unfamiliar. "Why did my mother try to kill you?" ---- "I have a clear shot at Typhoon," Mark was saying over his commlink, the swaying of the deck having stopped now that the al-Darsahs had fallen into a defensive formation. "I'm not really a sniper, you guys," he was saying, perhaps a little too loudly if any of the floating hydrokinetics had super-hearing. "What do I do?" He couldn't have been more proud of his friends for coming with him - or his girl for standing up to the monster who'd tried to drown them both just a little while earlier. Don't listen to him, babe! he thought. He's evil! Look at his palace! Admittedly he'd been having a pretty good time there not that long ago, something that made an unpleasant feeling of guilt twist beneath his washboard stomach. --- "I don't know, child," said Typhoon baldly. "Now, will you stand with your family as we seek justice?" "I..." Nina extended a hand to her father for just a moment, then curled it into a fist again. "Father...You're lying!"

"Don't worry about me," the Centurion told Paige reassuringly, and she could feel the edges of a mind as bright and sharp as ever even if his invulnerable body had obviously been taking a beating that day. "I've been away too long. Many of us have. We left the fight to those of you brave enough to carry on without us," he added to 1-800-Justice. "But never again. We will never abandon you again." He landed and extended a hand to shake Wail's, his grip rock-solid. "And if I've ever looked down on any of you," he admitted, taking all them in his gaze, "it was only because I was flying too high to see what really mattered." There were people among the crowd of evacuees, who wanted to see the Centurion, talk to him, even now - and he somehow found the time to see them all, shaking men's hands and embracing old women, reassuring everyone from the oldest to the youngest that everything was going to be all right. For his part, Richard had been mostly silent at the sight of the Man of Adamant - of all of them there, he'd had the most antagonistic relationship with the Centurion, even if it had mostly been tagging along during his mother's frequent duels with the "golden gargoyle!" When it was almost done, and the convoy was beginning their journey out of the city, Richard finally managed a handshake, his own hand feeling small and thin in the Centurion's grip. When those blue eyes met his, all he could muster was "Thank you." "No. Thank you. All of you. You're saving everything." And with that remark, and one last look around Lincoln, the Centurion was gone.

As far as the heroes could tell, they were alone in the smashed remains of the illusion so deftly taken down by Riff's application of sonic powers. A search of the warehouse did reveal what appeared to be the control room of the warehouse where they had been 'held' - there was a high-end sound and light control panel here, but again there wasn't enough to produce everything they'd seen. By looking at the live monitors, and cameras as well, they could make some conclusions about their captors - who had evidently watched them through a one-way mirror located at the side of this very control room! They'd certainly been watched the whole time, and filmed as well - the footage for the latter having been taken by their captors when they made their hasty exit. But what purpose had it all served? Without a more intense search of the discarded computers and folders in the control room (which had once been the warehouse office), there was no way to tell; only battered hard drives and dusty filing cabinets pushed against the wall seemed to offer any clues. "Do you need backup, Titan?" inquired his base contact.

"Hmm. Clumsily done, but done well all the same." Frost took out an old-fashioned magnifying glass and held it up to the damaged wheels of the first Humvee, commenting into his Freedom League commlink as he went. "No fingermarks in the metal, so no powerhouse at work here. Looks more as if the winds themselves did it, or perhaps great claws..." He moved along, examining the burnt-out Humvee and taking the opportunity to warm his cold fingers on the heated metal. "This was not the same man," he judged. "The fire is too neatly applied, and the damage inside is too precise. One who has the power to rip apart an armored vehicle like this, he does not just start small fires. This should be smashed, or torn apart, as was the other." "Do not worry, my brave fellows," he said to the injured soldiers, and for once that cool sarcasm of his was frozen and dead. "We will catch these villains and give them what they deserve. You have done your duty, and done it well, against mighty threats." Doctor that he was, he occupied himself with patching up wounds and giving first aid until Fleur arrived to heal these particular troops as well. Over the commlink, he said out loud, to Fleur and the others. "Multiple attackers, multiple powers. I see signs of speed, advanced weaponry, some sort of lycanthropy, and I believe weather control among the attackers. Your thoughts?" he inquired of the others.

All right - it's a little murdery, but I've certainly written backstories with much, much, much, much more murder! Just don't lose this supporting cast! APPROVED -
Eventually the deed was done and the heroes, for all that they'd had to go the extra mile to earn that particular title today, were standing outside the smashed remains of what had been Dr. Stratos' laboratory. Both Stratos and Weather Mistress were down for the count, leaving the heroes to explain the situation as the authorities arrived in the person of Freedom City PD squad cars amid a welter of flashing lights and sirens that quickly surrounded the place - despite having missed most of the festivities. No fools, they'd evidently stayed away during all the super-thunderstorms, explosions, and other superheroic shenanigans that could be awfully tough on mundane police officers! The fallen warehouse had left quite a gap in the neat row of prefab cinderblock buildings all around, but luckily the police were used to property damage and superheroes mixing. While a few uniformed officers went about the process of police-taping off the broken warehouse, Detective Fischler, a dapper young woman in a woman's suit and tie who looked fresh out of whatever program had elevated her to the major case squad, took their statements - starting with Set. "Set, wasn't it?" She gave him a professional smile, her freckled cheeks dimpling slightly, and asked, "What happened here today?"
