Inside the house (the door was unlocked), Cobalt Templar found Leon Litwack sitting by himself in a cramped, fallen-down old house crammed almost entirely with old-fashioned electronics and chalkboards covered in frantic scribbles. At Litwack's feet lay a history book with the pages torn in half, a grim account indeed of this fallen world. With his hands on his knees and his face in his hands, Litwack wept piteously, his labcoat far shabbier and his hair much whiter than the last time they'd seen him. He didn't look much like Einstein now, instead more resembling a scientist left homeless on the streets. Whatever had happened, this transition from one world to another had been a disaster for the would-be mad scientist.

"Hey, here she comes! Maybe Thrude wants to-" BOOM! And then that was the end of Dr. Stratos talking, and as far as the two heroes could discern, the end of the fight. Knocked out and dangling from the sandy snare around his ankle, Stratos hung like a macabre pinata inside the smashed-up warehouse that had once been his home away from Providence. Up in the sky, the clouds had faded and the weather stopped, and it was by all accounts a beautiful sunny day, just the thing for two young godlings who had just savaged their way through two opponents whose greatest weakness had ultimately been themselves, and frequent blows to the face as well as divine magic. Two opponents. Hey, where WAS Weather Mistress, anyway? The spot where she'd landed was now noticeably empty, and the door to the alley outside was still swinging open.

One supersonic cobalt-blue trip through the sound barrier, the motley crew arrived at the home of Leon Litwack, a shabby, rundown place in what was Ashton in the place they'd left behind. This was a poor, rundown neighborhood, the preWWII slum that had been eventually torn down to make the suburban development they were all more familiar with. From the street names and storefront businesses, all closed against the late hour, this looked to be a Jewish neighborhood - and an unhappy one at that. Leon Litwack's house looked like most any other, a small one-story box-shaped house that looked like it had seen better days. Certainly not the home one would expect of a scientist who could build a machine like the one they had seen before, but who was to say what was true and what was false in this nightmarish mixed-up world?

http://invisiblecastle.com/roller/view/4602690/ = 19 That's a miss on the Reflex save. http://invisiblecastle.com/roller/view/4602691/ = 21 Ugh, missed it even with the HP! All right, so he halves the damage DC, so that's a DC 22 save. http://invisiblecastle.com/roller/view/4602693/ = 22 Which he makes! -
Slowly a cockroach crawled towards Haukea, then another, then another, and then a swarm poured over the glowing-orange heroine. "Yes! Yes, we will go to the surface! And learn your ways, all of your ways!" Over the swarm's head as it crawled over Stronghold shone shining bright images of the various heroes who had helped rescue it, the ones with visible mouths, anyway. "Yes! A great day has dawned for the Psycho-Collective. Let us go forth and feel the sun on our numerous faces and the wind in our antennae!" Haukea could feel the swarm all over her force-field covered skin, some merrily wandering their way right over her face. "Yes," said Caradoc, pleased that the maddened swarm had reformed itself. "Come, let us take ye out of this bondage, into the bright world of heroes beyond."

"That's right, Mary!" declared a taunting Miss Americana, whose manic intensity had now focused like a laser on Southern Belle again. "This is a united army of Americans of all shapes, sizes, colors, and species, come together to send you back to Hell! You dare lay hands on a freedwoman fighting for her liberties? TASTE LIBERTY'S FURY, MONSTER!" she boomed before raising her hands and firing a pyrotechnic array of red, white, and blue lasers from her lovely fingers - laser beams that slashed burning score marks across the nearly-invulnerable body of Southern Belle and the rather more vulnerable body of Temperance! "And then when you're out of that poor woman, we'll put YOU in chains and see how YOU like the taste of SHACKLES on your flesh!"

In the meantime: Liberty Americana sees that her antagonist is wrapped up in a grapple and takes this opportunity to open fire! She switches to the laser storm AP of her Energy Systems array and blasts upwards - targeting Southern Belle and Temperence (the latter by accident). Take an HP, TT! As they are both grappling, neither of them have their dodge bonus. http://invisiblecastle.com/roller/view/4601316/ = 27 hits Southern Belle, who has a pretty steep Tou save to make. http://invisiblecastle.com/roller/view/4601317/ = 13! But not that steep! I'll call that another bruised and say it drops her Impervious to 10 (normally it doesn't work that way, but I want the low-PL characters in the thread to hurt too!) That's a DC 27 Tou save for Temperance, or anyone who has Interpose and takes the hit for her.- 49 replies

"Hey, who turned out the lights!?" asked Stratos irritably. With something of a sigh, he crossed his arms and said in Set's general direction. "You know, you're lucky I'm still on my medication, because otherwise having a blind weather controller going medieval on your ass would be pretty bad for you, and this whole freaking neighborhood! Hey, that reminds me - Set, I need you to do me a favor. Get your cameraphone ready and take a picture of Thrude when she gets back, because things are gonna be great!" - Up in the sky, so far above the Earth she could make out the curve of Midgard beneath, Thrude felt the magic rod she'd grabbed grow hotter and hotter even in the intense cold of deep space - until it exploded in her hands with a powerful BANG! She tasted carbon as super-heated metal erupted against her face and hair, the latter being blasted backwards to stiffened expansion like a miniature sunburst, the former dusted with an infrablack coating of high-tech alloys and unnatural energies. Looking down, her armor was equally blackened by the blast - albeit curiously undamaged. - "...so anyway, I've been thinking, there are a lot of gods that nobody even worships these days. What if I went to one and said "Hey, I'll be your Earthly avatar if you power me up a little!" I'm not a chump like what's his face, Baron Samedi, I wouldn't go all crazy with it! Then I could be Dr. Stratos, God of THUNDER!" He demonstrated his point by making lightning jump from his fingers. (He'd been talking for a while.) "What do you think?"

Say what you like about teleporting gorillas, they aren't exactly subtle, mused Edge as the party from Gorilla Island arrived. A glowing circle in the middle of the hunting lodge complex gradually came into focus like adjusting the dials on a set of binoculars - then the circle itself rippled with fractal lines and patterns too fast for Mark to follow, a glorious show indeed for Hologram's show and Velocity's eyes alike. Of course, the arrival of the emissaries - a half-dozen gorillas of both genders, dressed in the elaborate finery of traditional Gorilla Island nobility, was deadly serious. The leader, a muscular silverback with an alert posture and flashing eyes, loped towards the main house and sought out the first super-looking person he could find - which in this case happened to be the Freedom League member on the scene. "I am Lord Harridan of Gorilla Island, and I have come for our captured citizen! Where are you holding him?" Still linked to Gargantua's mind, Hologram could feel the gorilla's fear and hope at the sight of other talking apes (well, besides humans, anyway!), even as her crew continued to film the rare encounter with the semi-reclusive gorilla government. Years of abandonment had made him curse his own people for ages, and the sight of other gorillas filled him with wonder and dread at the same moment. <I have not heard an ape's voice speak in an age. They would give me the animal-gorillas of this continent and expect me to mate with them, and I...are these real?> he asked Paige. "Hang on," said Edge suddenly, looking over at Velocity as the UN hero stood in support of the Freedom League agent on the scene. "Wasn't there supposed to be a whole army beaming in?"

They were walking across the hotel complex's vast courtyard, surrounded on all sides by relaxing guests who were occasionally recognizable as some of the worst criminals of the 20th century, when disaster struck. And like so much else that had happened today, it came at super-speed! First it was Clock Queen, who with her great speed had managed to don her costume again on the run back from Roman's apartment to poolside, where she took Kyogen and (reluctantly) Paulette aside for a quick confab. They spoke at super-speed as Anna touched them, one after another, and then Paulette was off, pressing her fingers to her temples and concentrating as she stood by the side of what was otherwise a normal-looking, albeit crowded, pool. As Kyogen suited up, Anna turned to the three timelost heroes and said, "Listen, we don't have time to round anyone up without starting a panic that'll set this place on fire, so I need to know if you are in. The Jet Patrol just showed up in downtown Capetown and announced they were hunting American supervillains, and we are going to go out there and knock them on their fat Dutch asses. They don't actually know where we're meeting, so if we hit them hard and disengage, they won't come down on this place. If Voortrekker thinks he can just waltz all over the Crime League, he can think again."

Though Nina shot Eve a look that would have shot daggers through a lesser woman, she fell silent as the heroes defended her people from even the threat of nuclear attack. When everyone was back together and dressed, Mark moved them a little away from Fatima's bedside. (Trevor's calls hadn't been able to get him much at this juncture - just that yes, Fatima bint Antar al-Darsah was listed as the seventh wife of Typhoon (and the picture on her Wikipedia article seemed to match the woman he'd seen, albeit aged); the former belly dancer had been the youngest of Typhoon's several wives upon their marriage and was the only one who (or so history had believed) had predeceased him of an unnamed cancer.) "We'll be right back," he promised her as he took Nina's hand. "We're superheroes, we can handle this-" - They appeared in the middle of a war zone. It was all pitching seas and rain pouring down in gobbets from the sky, but that wasn't the worst of it by far! Mark had, quite naturally, put them down on the flight deck of the Charles de Gaulle (albeit luckily not in front of where planes took off); but he hadn't been expecting a conflict like this! They were near the control tower of the carrier, not far from its helicopter pad. Light missiles erupted from the carrier's flanks to strike against an armored figure in the sky with explosive results while jets screamed overhead in a desperate aerial battle against Socotran royalty; figures wearing their own battle armor that deployed clouds and waterspouts against the might of the Marine Nationale! Suddenly, the huge ship itself began to tilt noticeably - and a nearby helicopter, only half-battened down by its overworked crew, snapped free and began sliding down the deck towards the heroes!

Sojourner walked the perimeter of the ritual circle, tracing out a circumference that included her, her maybe-siblings, her mother, father, and great-grandfather - and then herself took a position in the center of the circle, knife held high. None of the other heroes knew the language she chanted in, some dark tongue that fused English, Greek, Latin, and what was almost certainly a dialect of Lor - but the guttural words burst from her throat with a fervent, nearly throbbing intensity, as if they were being born. Suddenly the air rippled as Sojourner's eyes glowed a familiar black - and over their heads, a circle formed in the air to match the bloody one on the floor. This one throbbed and wavered with animal intensity, but Sojourner's chanting went on. As she did so, the blood at their feet began to ripple and glow, black and red mingling together with a strange, eerie light matched by the circle above - until the very stuff of reality seemed to give way as they watched! Inside the circle over their heads, all-too-familiar scenes played all over again; the rotting, the changing, the painful deaths of their beloved parents; until suddenly those scenes ran in reverse, then resumed as normal with no sign of the previous carnage! The scenes rolled backwards, faster and faster, from the most recent deaths (which turned out to be, from a quick glimpse, Mystery's parents) all the way to Tensile's, and they had a quick glimpse of Hendahwit at his ritual table; until with a sudden great infrablack flash, the circle flared, and vanished! Just as the circle disappeared, though, a body dropped right out through the closing magical passageway, landing right at their feet. Naked, semi-conscious, and looking decidedly unhealthy, it was Taddai Hendahwit himself!

As far as Corbin can tell, this world's World War II seems to have been a full-scale war between an aggressive Soviet Union under the murderous rule of Dimitri Peshkov, some sort of superpowered monster who overthrew Stalin in 1942 and instigated an all-out war with the West which saw the Soviets overrun much of Europe and Africa before being driven back by multiple nuclear strikes - and Peshkov himself is still alive. Western Europe is a charnelhouse and Eastern Europe no better, and it sounds like the US is at war with global Communism across most of the planet - he can find no mention of a Hitler or Nazi Germany at all.

Backing up, they found themselves in the personal library of the man who owned the house, whose name was evidently Frederick Dawson. Dawson was evidently both an amateur photographer and the kind of person who leaves books he's reading scattered around dog-leaved and bookmarked; making it easy, over the space of about twenty minutes for the heroes to get a glimpse of where they were. And it wasn't good! Dawson was a Grand Cyclops of the Genetic Purity League, an organization that (from the books left scattered around) seemed to borrow rituals freely from the Boy Scouts, Freemasons, and the Klu Klux Klan - and was obsessed with genetic purity. Graphic illustrated accounts in the rear of the books told stories about "mutant hunts" where "genetic deviants with Communist-given superpowers" were rounded up and sent to internment facilities in Canada. Perhaps unsurprisingly, every picture of a GPL member was a white man. Pinned to the wall by corkboard, Dawson had a letter from his son deployed to the 'Australian Front', a heavy redacted document that spoke of vicious fighting in the desert where "the abos called their phony gods, but we put them down, fast and hard." Dawson didn't seem to be a history buff, but they did find medals for military service on another wall that spoke of Dawson senior's service in "World War II" fought in France, England, and South America, with frequent badges for "ATOMIC SURVIVOR" inside a hefty chest of paternal decorations. Dawson Senior, a man visibly suffering from the latter stages of cancer in the pictures they could see on the walls, looked to have been quite the war hero. The last picture they found was one all too familiar - tacked to the corkboard in the kitchen was a newspaper cutout of the day's coupons that just happened to have a picture of "local physicist Leon Litwack teaching his science classes to a new generation of Americans", a man instantly recognizable as the operator of the time machine they'd seen. Litwack was even in the phone book, a resident of a neighborhood that looked to be on the other side of the "William Shockley Institute of Technology", which seemed to have replaced HIT.

"How-how DARE you!" spluttered Stratos as the sand sinously surrounded him and snared his legs tightly to a nearby piece of broken ceiling. "I am the victim of a crime! I am the injured party here after that crazy Weather Floozy burst into my house, blew up my perfectly innocent death, I mean peace, peace ray and locked me in a cage and you, you HOOLIGANS," he said, pointing a finger at Thrude and Set, "have the audacity to beat me with your giant hammer-murder thing and tie me up with sand!" He kicked futilely at the bound limb before adding, "You know what, I am tired of this. You both want to play with mad science? Well, you should know what you're getting into!" He fired a blast of lightning from his fingers, not at the two godlings who were so bedeviling him, not at the fallen Weather Mistress, but at the powerful weather-controlling wand she had dropped after Stratos had knocked her unconscious. The fallen vane leaped in the air, electricity crackling all up and down its length, but alarmingly it continued even after Stratos' purple lightning blasts had dissipated. "There!" he said, putting his hands on his hips as the Weather Vane continued to jerk and spark with a truly ominous glow and growing whine. "I overclocked her internal hypercell controllers, just like I did right in Thunder's gazpacho back in 91. And you don't even know what that means, do you? Is it going to explode? Is it going to do NOTHING? You don't know, and because you were such big jerks, I am not even going to tell you." He crossed his arms and looked away, full of superior pride.
