Lady Liberty Having regained her composure by the time she reached her fellow Leaguers, Lady Liberty quickly pulled both Fleur de Joie and Velocity aside, Beth Walton-Wright's formidable force of personality enough to let her persuade her teammates to join her in a small conference room just off from the banquet room. Looking at the two women, Beth hugged them both before stepping back, hands folded over her stomach. "Stesha, Megan...I have some big news, and I promised myself you'd be the first two I told." The composed, calm diplomat was obviously bubbling over with repressed emotion, but it didn't seem to be unpleasant news. "I'm going to have a baby. I know, it's a big surprise!" she added. "I'm fifty-four years old and I'm going to have a baby!" She laughed, still obviously hardly able to believe it, her expressive face torn between giddy anticipation and dread at the same moment. "Trevor and I, we thought we were too old, so we stopped trying...and I guess that was all I needed."

Fast-Forward "You're telling me. Jeez, half these kids were born after '93." At the mention of his son, Richard had his wallet out at super-speed, showing pictures of a handsome, track-suited kid who did indeed look more than a little like Richard had back in the day. "This is my boy Will, just turned sixteen. Not quite as fast as me, but he's getting there. He's at that school for the hero kids these days." Another flip, and there was a girl of about eight with the family, looking a little more sullen than her sunny big brother. "This is my Holly-girl, she's eight this year. I tried to get her into My Little Pony, but she's a Disney girl through and through. She takes after her mom...thank goodness." He was a good dad, and would never discuss the problems his daughter's powers had caused the family with somebody else, even a friend of his. Richard was also smart enough not to dwell too heavily on family, knowing the magnitude of Keith's all-too-recent loss. For a man who woke up in a cold sweat when he thought about times he'd come close to losing Paige, it was all too easy to know what topics to run around. "You should come out to the West Coast sometime, man, let us do a classic 70s Supercrime! special. We could get what's her face, the one who turned the first Lady Liberty into an animal mutant, on the show, tell the kids the difference between a wolf-mutant and a real werewolf. Gotta make sure the kids know what's what, right?" He zipped away for a moment, from his perspective the party slowing to a crawl, and came back with a hot toddy for himself and Paige. "Just saw Beth take Velocity and Fleur de Joie aside, but she went behind a locked door. I guess we'll know...soon enough." Worry mixed with impatience was not a healthy combination for him, so he tried to stifle it.

That does indeed leave him flat-footed. His Fort save is +12 currently. Personally, I prefer to let Sneak Attack boost exotic save attacks - I find it pretty inelegant to do otherwise. http://orokos.com/roll/156853 So he is dazed! Good news! Crimson Tiger is up

Hologram wasn't able to find anything, that lingering mental impression having vanished entirely, and her husband came to pick her up after another hour or so - it was getting late and this all-night heroing thing was a young woman's game. There'd been no further kidnappings by the next morning, but there was a police bulletin warning young women between the ages of 16 and 20 to be on their guard when they went out late at night. While Temperance pursued an investigation that let her identify the monster that she'd encountered in her battle on the Lincoln rooftops, Cobalt Templar was dispatched in another direction entirely - Jack Washington, the officer who'd met Temperance at the crime scene, knew one of the few people in Freedom City who could reasonably be called an expert on the Anglo-Saxon culture that had produced both Beowulf and the mercenary Unferth. Eleanor got the email message that morning. Doctor Churchill, I don't know if you remember me, but I gave that paper on the medieval bailiff system at the Free City Conference last year. I've referred a superhero to you for consultation about a Dark Ages case. Look for Cobalt Templar to stop by your office sometime today during your hours. Officer Jack Washington

Elsa is a socially stunted queen [the first Disney princess to actually _be_ Queen] of Arendelle, a far northern Scandanavian kingdom built on a fjord. She's pretty enough, but terrible with people - she also happens to be nigh-unto a god walking the Earth compared to the rest of the bystander-to-PL-5 cast. She's not a great fighter, and she is all too mortal (that Shield takes the form of gigantic ice walls raised before her in combat), but I think I've captured her tremendous power here. I'm deliberately avoiding spoilers for Frozen in this writeup (go see it), but I think this build captures the walking juggernaut that is the queen of Arendelle. Basically if not for the fact that Elsa is a Disney heroine (and had the kind of childhood Jean Grey might have had if her parents were Disney royalty), she could have disposed of her enemies in the movie (and most of the city around her) with a few well-placed icicles. I wrestled a bit before deciding to just give her a tremendous dynamic array; this is a version of her who lives in a society where people with superpowers can actually get some combat training. Outside of the powers she has (which have strengthened her health a bit), she is all too human - one thing she does not have is significant combat training. Her lack of Super-Senses comes up in the movie, and when we see her on the move she's faster than a horse - but not that much faster. (The basic idea with her power allocation is that I'm representing Queen Elsa, defending Arendelle from outside attack.) Treat her Summoned minions as powerstunts, particularly since she had no idea one of them was even there. I think she works fine as a Claremont student, a princess of a far away frozen kingdom, but if she's from a healthy family she should probably have more Charisma - as it is she's pretty enough but isolated so much that she has a lot of trouble dealing with others. She could be a princess of Nifleheim or Jotunheim (maybe with some Growth!) for that matter, or maybe just an ordinary person. You could tweak her descriptors and immunities as well, depending on what kind of powers you wanted her to have. Now go see Frozen. -

[2PP] costs abilities 40 + combat 16 + saves 11 + skills 11/44 + feats 9 + powers 61 = 150 pts ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Design Notes: Atlanteans in comics are usually pretty generic Namor or Aquaman clones. Freedom City is a little unusual in Nereid and Siren, a water elemental and sonic controller, respectively. With that thought in mind, I've created this guy - an Atlantean mystic who is more of a spellcaster than powerhouse or summoner. I've built his magic with the idea that he's a mage who works as part of the Atlantean government/military. His magic is organized around supporting front-line warriors like the royal family, banishing summoned monsters, casting away treacherous illusionists, and freeing people brainwashed by evil cults. He can also blast away with holy Atlantean magic too, using light-based spells which are particularly threatening to the menacing creatures that rise from the lightless depths to manhandle Atlantean warriors. He can also turn a dim battlefield into daylight, perfect for impeding creatures that fight at a penalty in the day. Note that he's a bit squishier than many of my other Atlantean builds; he's something of a city boy and doesn't have Survival for getting along on the ocean floor. He might eat fish, but he's never had to catch one. He's a friendly sort, more like Superfriends Aquaman than the gruff, bearded pirate or his half-naked Marvel Comics double, and there's nothing wrong with that! One would think someone with experience in courtly politics would not be a raging jerk to everyone around him! (Admittedly, the surfacers do often push Namor and Aquaman, push them so hard...) What has led him to leave the decadent Atlantean court (royal courts are always decadent, even if run by heroes) and adventure on the surface? Maybe he wants a chance to learn more mystic lore and thinks this is the best place to do that, giving him an advantage over seabound Deep One casters, or maybe he's just gone to look for the adventure he's heard so much about up here in the sunshine. Or maybe he just wants to be the strongest guy in town for a little while. -
Getting over fifteen will tell you not only the broad strokes of who these people are (a family of metahuman supremacists) but that so far only 2 of 5 have shown their faces...

The OOC thread. I'll call it a DC 10 check (made on whatever skill you think is appropriate) to recognize the Psions.

At that moment, a flaming woman crashed through the glass skylight with a sound like a bomb going off. Glass and burning fragments fell on the arena floor as the halftime show, a local high school marching band, fled screaming in terror from the monster that had crashed into their moment of triumph. Cameras zoomed in on her face as she landed on the hardwood floor, her fiery body igniting the wood beneath. She looked like flame made flesh, her long red hair cascading backwards into sizzling fire, flames crackling along her skin and in her eyes, her low-cut, red costume drawing the eye as much as the heat glowing from her body made her almost difficult to look at. With a cold sneer on her fiery face, she stretched back her arm and began hurling basketball-sized chunks of liquid flame that spattered and spread like napalm. She didn't target the stands or the crowd, instead with deliberate, targeted intent, she hurled flame against the doors and exits of the arena itself, not a spreading fire, but covering the exits with searing flame that made them impossible to approach. As she did, a new voice broke over the arena's loudspeakers, a woman's voice - rich, warm, and soothing that somehow managed to stop the fleeing, panicking crowd in its tracks. "Attention! This is Empath Psion!" There was a camera shift, and a picture on the big board cut away to reveal a smiling woman in the broadcast booth, surrounded by awestruck-looking casters. "My cousin Ember," and the fiery woman glanced up angrily at that, "is just sealing the doors to make sure we aren't disturbed. We don't want to hurt any of you, really." She smiled. "We want to protect you from your enemies. But we need your cooperation. Everyone just needs to sit tight for a while and not worry, and everything will be fine."

January 12, 2014 Stone Stadium Freedom City College It's halftime, and the Harlem Globetrotters are in fine form. They've packed Wading Way Arena to nearly two-thirds of its 10,000 seat capacity and have held the crowd's attention with their trademark brand of basketball shenanigans and good fundamentals. Freedom City appreciates people in funny costumes with fantastic abilities, and between the cartwheels that scored that last three-point shot and the backflip slamdunk, the Globetrotters have the crowd eating out of the palm of their collective hand. Will they come from behind and make up their current two-point deficit against the hated Washington Generals? The crowd certainly hopes so! But it's half-time now, time for a bathroom or stretch break, or perhaps to make your way to the famously overflowing concession stand. Freedom City College has always been particularly international in its cuisine, and whether or not it's true that the concession stand's manager Maurice is really an alien, his hotdogs really are 'out of this world'! The crowd is happy, the game is going great - It's a good day to be alive.

Freedom City University January 4, 2014 It was late on the night of January 4th when the alarm began ringing at Freedom City University's Physics Building; the clang-a-lang-a-lang of the old brass striker in the big red alarms located high above each of the building's original entrances. The campus was mostly quiet right now; classes weren't back in session and most students were still away lingering over the holidays with their families, and it was late enough that most of the people who used the campus for other purposes were home. Under dark, cloudy skies and a mostly empty, snow-covered campus, lit only by the ever-present glow of security lights, the alarms rang again and again - while dark deeds were carried out in the shadowed Physics building and a man's life lay in the balance.

Caradoc snapped up his blade and interposed himself between the robots and the technopaths, taking quick tactical action. Nanites meant the danger of infection in melee attacks - nanites meant ranged attacks. He pumped the action of his weapon as the blade began glowing with an unearthly light, a shriek of murdered molecules briefly splitting the air before he fired a sizzling black and white cone of energy from his sword's tip, blasting the robots and shoving them back out and away from the door. He pressed on the attack, sizzling, shrieking energy scorching the air as it knocked the metallic drones backwards like a firehose of energy. As the robots smashed into the wall, one fell to pieces entirely, two others left smoking ruins as he raised his blade and pointed it at the most intact of the two survivors. "If there is a remote intelligence operating this system, you will not be deactivated if you surrender to us."- 62 replies

Gina's timing proved fortuitous because no sooner had she emerged from the bedroom, dressed, coiffed, and bathed, than the caterers did indeed arrive! With list in hand, Steve took over as she disappeared downstairs, speaking in slow, careful tones as he took in the small catering crew that efficiently went about the business of producing a holiday dinner (complete with all the trimmings and equipment) from the back of their white panel truck outside. "Money is no object," he assured the catering crew, "you should all be well-compensated for this." The spread was impressive, even by Earth-Prime standards. Between the gigantic turkey, deep dishes of mashed potatoes and gravy, cranberry sauce, thick layers of stuffing, apple and pecan pies, and various other goodies beyond Steve's limited ability to recognize, Steve had a feeling he and Gina would be eating from this meal for days - a thoroughly pleasant thought for a man who still had his own cache of food in the basement. When it was done, he paid them well, using the cash Gina had left behind, and as she preferred waited until they had actually boarded their van and left before he knocked on the door to downstairs. "It is all done. Come see it, and let me see you."

"If struggle comes, I hope it is in very depths of the molten rock, yesss. It will be delightful." At the sound of combat, Frost dropped the act like an old hat - when there was a crisis, Comrade Frost was on in an instant, his body erupting into icy fog as he tumbled down the tunnel after the others. "Experience has proved that, on certain very important questions of the proletarian revolution, all countries will inevitably have to do what Russia has done." He snorted. "Let us hope that things have not gone quite so far as that, however..." Experience with living in a revolutionary society hadn't convinced Comrade Frost to embrace the institution - just the opposite, in fact. He continued, awfully chatty for a red-eyed cloud of white mist, making sure to keep his distance both from Fleur de Joie and Tiamat as they ran. "Suggest we concentrate on separating combatants first, deciding the guilty second."
-
Fast-Forward Oh sh-it, it's Wail! It was hard not to think that, after so much conditioning over the years. "LaMarr, look at you, you old son-of-a-gun, how's it hanging, man?" He pumped Keith's bigger fist in his and went on, "You don't look so bad. You're not getting older, dude, you're just turning into a polar bear very slowly." He winked. Up close Fast-Forward didn't look exactly like the punk kid who'd fought alongside Wail and the rest of 1-800-JUSTICE twenty years earlier (and neither did Hologram), but as he knew he certainly looked a hell of a lot younger than fifty. "It's good to see you, man." "It's good to see all of you," added Lady Liberty. "Keith, Richard, Paige; it's been too long since we were all together. I had selfish reasons for inviting you all here tonight, but I'm glad we're together again anyway. There aren't enough of us..." Suddenly, and completely unexpectedly for people familiar with the calm, level-headed diplomat, Lady Liberty burst into tears. "Oh! Oh, I'm sorry," she said, wiping her eyes, "it's these damn...look, I promised myself I'd tell Velocity and Fleur de Joie first, but I'll see you all later tonight. Thanks so much for coming." She headed off at that, wiping her eyes with her hand.

"Radical," said Richard sincerely, glad to see the new arrival. He knew how much his daughter dreamt of flight, even if that was one thing she couldn't get from her parents. He zipped over and pumped Elias's hand fast. "Richard Cline, nice to meet you!" He winked. "We're just showing my boy Will here around campus before his big day. Good to see somebody's watching the skies!" He knew Will wasn't as fast as that Bolt kid, but that guy was long-gone from all he'd heard - and you had to big somebody up if they were going to success. My lips are sealed, Richard thought back at his wife, a zippered lip and winking eye in his mind. He and Paige shared a mutual distance for the violence-loving, closeted, mysterious culture of dojos and back alley brawls that ninjas ran in, but he knew she wasn't quite as concerned about them as he was. "Son, you're a supersonic speedster, you don't need a car! Cars need you!"

"A jerk, probably," replied Stratos to Starchaser's question. "Not Roman, that's for sure, he is way too old and that daughter of his, woo, she is quite a character. I mean, c'mon, Saturnalia, honey, that thing with being the kingpin's evil daughter who tries to get with the heroes worked when she was twenty, twenty-five, but now she's what, thirty? Thirty-five? More? You know what you call a forty-year-old broad who lives in her dad's house and wears a toga all the time? A weirdo, that's what you call them, even if they are a real looker." He nodded in satisfaction at his bon mot. "Orion's got no powers and doesn't like being in charge anyway, Devil Ray's just some punk, Hiroshima Shadow's loco crazy, and Medea's not any better..." He went on, "I thought for sure we were gonna get Gamma the other day but now he's on hiatus after that thing with Ember Psion. I guess she showed him how they cook the meat where she's from, haw-haw! Hey, do you know Quickstep? I met her when we were on this crazy ringworld together but apparently her mom and dad don't want her hanging out with me because of all the times I tried to kill Captain Thunder!"

They do not seem to be within a mile of you, more's the pity! (Or maybe that's not so bad, since it's not that much more than a mile to where your kids are sleeping). But something else _is_ nearby, almost at the edges of your perception, as if a third spirit is present for the whole affair - a bubbling cauldron of spectral frustration that seems to vanish as you look too closely, as if half-visible itself or wise to your scrying. With the DC 25 on Gather Info, you remember what I posted above as far as Unferth's 'story' - so that TT will have something to find in the investigation period, I'll add that the monster that attacked her will turn out to be http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hr%C3%A6svelgr .
