  1. As the icy fog poured across the battlefield, the two remaining Nazi commando teams vanished beneath its chilling embrace. The heroes could hear shouts in German and running feet from within, proof that the fight wasn't over, but from the sound of things the Germans had no idea where they were going. It was only a matter of time before they used some of their heavier weaponry, but for the moment they did indeed have some time."75%!" Citizen was yelling on everyone's commlink, even as the robots around him assumed the combat positions with murderous tension visible in cybernetic limbs. "The first German in the room is dead," called Rogue to the others, a look of determination on her projected face as she flitted from body to body. "Make sure the others can see it done, so they remember! " came the chant, a mechanical echo on the commlink.
  2. Nazi Commando Team 1 is down! Nazi Commando Team 2 will make a break for it towards the source of the obscuring effect. Wraith is up as soon as I make a Gm post
  3. The enormous crash of the distant lightning bolt, clearly audible even inside the ruined Brownstone, made everyone jump and cut any response from below. When the echoes cleared, everyone could distantly hear the sound of a clearly identifiable voice singing, "Daisy, daisy, give me your answer true..." Opening the door revealed a Brownstone basement that was untouched by the attack, albeit with a musty smell to the air that suggested just how long it had been abandoned. The untouched room was almost entirely dark after this many months off the grid, with just a few red glowing emergency lights here and there and a single, half-visible electronic spectre sitting on the table. VINCE looked up at them with hollow eyes as they approached, his Archetech jumpsuit looking as tired and tattered as the rest of him, as if not only his signal but his program itself had degraded. "Hey, Jill," he said wearily. "I don't suppose you're here to tell me that this is all just been one really bad feedback loop and you're gonna drop me back in the real world? Gonna have some laughs about ol' Vince, stuck in the end of the world on his hard drive?"
  4. Sure, why not, AA said portentously:
  5. They're both down, with the bonus from Autofire
  6. Freedom Hall was an eerie place as Bee-Keeper and Blue Jay explored it. Opened storage lockers with their contents spilled on the ground, security robots in position at the broken windows, decayed food in the cafeteria still on turned-over trays, heavy security doors long since slammed shut and sealed, all speaking to frantic activity and an alert against a disaster that had swept everything away anyway. The building was still secure despite what looked like months of abandonment; as sturdy as Freedom Hall was, the building would stand for years without any further repair. But there was still something _off_ about it: there were no people, no animals, and no remains inside: despite the months-decayed carnage outside, the inside of the Hall had no bodies, no bones, and no sign that any had ever been there. Behind them, Dr. Stratos (who was not a young man) was resting inside the garden, walking around and chuckling over the statues of dead heroes. - Steve didn't look satisfied with his conversation with Erin, but fell silent and kept rear watch without a word of complaint once they were inside the building. Perhaps I'm wrong, he thought disconsolately as they walked through the wildly disordered lower floors of the Brownstone. The building looked subtly _wrong_ to Jill's eyes, it was certainly not the place that she had left behind however long ago that had been. There were clearly signs of wild activity here; scorchmarks inside the building itself, but still no bodies or visible remains of anyone she'd known. She did find the melted remains of what might have been one of Colt's rifles near the window, but otherwise the place was eerily silent. Despite the damage outside, the place was largely intact. They were just reaching the doorway downstairs when Steve suddenly spoke aloud. "Careful. There is a trap below, one that might still be active if the batteries in the lower areas are still empowered. A machine intelligence wielding advanced weaponry." It was getting harder and harder to forget as they got closer and closer. "It was well-armed." - "Wait a minute." Blue Jay and Bee-Keeper could hear Stratos in the garden, his voice echoing through the broken windows as they explored the building. "He's dead? He's DEAD?" Stratos was standing before the statue of the dead Captain Thunder, a gleam of pure fury dawning in his eyes. "NO! I won't be tricked by Thunder and his lies! He's not dead! It's this place that's dead! DEAD! I'LL KILL YOU AGAIN THUNDER!" he shouted and suddenly there was a BOOM and flash of light as a bolt of lightning struck the ground inside the hall, hitting Stratos again and again, blue-white electrical fire sizzling around his body and into his eyes as he floated up into the air, the light and sound show visible even across town in the Brownstone: after all, the lightning strikes were the first real 'weather' anyone had seen in the city. "First I'll huff, and I'll puff, and I'll BLOW YOUR HOUSE IN!"
  7. "And I have something for you as well," Steve promised without hesitation. If he showed any sign of thinking about what an important day this was for a social butterfly like Miss Americana, he showed no sign of it as he spoke to her handler. "I will see you tonight, Gina." And sure enough, around the eight o'clock that was his usual time Steve marched up Gina's shoveled walkway with box of chocolates under one arm and wrapped present under the other. It had been a while since he'd seen Gina's house but there was no mistaking its familiar shape in the darkness. He wondered where Gina's electronic sidekick was today, but supposed that wasn't too likely to be an issue. Since catching the two of them together, Sharl had generally avoided Gina's house at night. Particularly with him with such ruffled relations with his mentor, too. Steve had heard all about that, taking note of how upset Gina had been about her security being violated. Was that why he'd stayed away, in retrospect? It was tough to say.
  8. Prompted by his conversations with Mara, Erin, and Jill, Steve finally did call Gina on the night of the 22nd. In retrospect he'd gone too far in his desire not to shake up their relationship with a lot of visits, avoiding her could cause as many problems for what they had together as being there too much. He certainly didn't want to make Gina unhappy with him, especially when so much was already going on in December and January. Making her upset now could ruin all their plans for the future. "Hello, Gina, it's me," he said on the phone in his usual dry, flat voice. "I was wondering if you'd like me to come over tonight. I have a supply of holiday-themed chocolates, and thought we could watch a Christmas movie." He fell silent at that, listening for her response patiently.
  9. Busy as she was helping her still-in-the-doghouse sidekick organize his January expedition to Erde, Gina didn't see much of her boyfriend as the month of December rolled on and as the holiday season approached. Spending the holidays together was one thing they'd never really discussed, since for all she'd seen Steve didn't celebrate any Earth holidays. It certainly seemed like he was busy enough at HAX, or maybe with FLSCH, given that he wasn't coming over and wasn't calling. And indeed Steve was quite busy with his work at HAX and elsewhere, putting in time at the soup kitchen where he volunteered or just walking around as he took in Freedom City in December. His relationship with Gina, and with Miss A, was certainly on his mind, but there was so much else to deal with during the holidays in Freedom City. Dating Gina was a potentially dangerous thing with emotions occasionally so raw between them, and with her formidable mind always at work. So he kept his distance, figuring it was better to do that than risk a blowup during the holidays. It wasn't that his feelings for Gina had changed, but he wanted to make sure she stayed happy. It was very important to him that she not think that anything had changed between them, and it was easier for him to believe that when they weren't together. Maybe it wasn't the right decision to make, but when he was honest with himself, his grasp of romantic behavior among people on Earth wasn't the best. So he walked the streets and worked late every night in December as the snow began to pile high on the streets around him, his mind occasionally going back to Gina as he wondered what she was doing.

  12. Under siege from a bombardment of paper cranes, the helicopters crashed to the soggy Earth below amid muffled roars and explosions! Papercut couldn't see the crashes clearly from his vantage point, just catch glimpses of red and black armored vehicles tumbling to the Earth and falling to pieces on impact, at least until the last helicopter exploded on the ground with a deafening roar and torrent of flames! Lit by the continuous red light pouring from the burning, wrecked chopper, he could see a now truncated group of commandos pulling themselves out of the wreckage and gathering their high-tech looking weapons. The Nazi hit squad had come expecting a fight, but not from a horde of magical paper cranes! The broken chopper had fallen across the perimeter fence, knocking down a hole big enough for the commandos to advance through and sure enough they seemed intent to do just that. Inside the warehouse, Citizen called to the others. "Upload's at 65% percent! I can't leave this now, and if they use another magnetic weapon near the building, all of this could be for nothing! I'll stay here, you guys deal with the Nazis!" For their part, the Erde-Tronikians were grimly taking up defensive positions at the perimeter of the building, from their raised steel fists and improvised weapons like a whole car ready to strike lethally and fast against their attackers. From the damage to their bodies, and marks on the walls and floor near where they stood, it looked like this wasn't the first time they'd ambushed Nazis in this building.

  14. "I do not notice the lack," said Steve truthfully as he considered Jill's words. "My parents maintained much about their old lives with me as a child, but we did not celebrate holidays for which there was no longer any purpose." His face grew clouded for a moment as a deep rumble entered his voice. "My girlfriend's life has been difficult. Problems with her parents," he said, sharing more than he ever had about the still-unnamed woman with whom he occasionally shared his life. "But you two, will you be with family this year?" he asked, knowing full well that Jill had access to the kind of extended family shared by no one else in a position at HAX: i.e., alive, sane, numerous, and not corrupted entirely by the forces of evil.
  15. "...I have seen this city before," said Steve suddenly, pushing past his fear and guilt to speak out. He'd mentioned it before, but they'd all been too busy, but the thought of Jill going into her brother's headquarters where his body might lie was enough to make him talk. "This city...and its like..." He walked away from the group for a moment, studying a long burn scar that lay across the center of the street. "I was confused at first, because so many of the bodies are gone, and the forges unbuilt, but...The scorch marks, and remains, there and there," he said, pointing to scars on the street and at the corners of buildings. "Those who fought back. With powers, and those without. The damaged buildings, the same. The damage to Freedom Hall, from a carrier landing on the roof. And the marks, and the Hall as it looked, and the Brownstone here...This is a city killed by the Terminus. I know because I was there." He pointed to the ground, and though he could look at Erin when he turned back he could not meet Jill's eyes, or even look at the girl with them. It was hard to hear his own voice over the screaming in his own ears."But that is impossible, because it is gone. This world burned to ash and I witnessed it with my own eyes." - "Oh, it's you, Barry," said Stratos sociably, putting his hand on the Bee-Keeper's shoulder in a familiar sort of way. "Little young for you, isn't she?" he asked before adding, "Heh-heh-heh! Anyway, it's good to see you, I thought you were in the nuthouse because you were CRAZY." It was easy enough for Blue Jay to make her way up to the building, despite a few hair-raising moments inside the shaft when Stratos' lightning jetted past her to fry the security systems where she was hidden. The grate turned out to be not even bolted down at the top, a decorative copper plate that led her up into an overgrown, sad-looking memorial garden on a dead world. It was getting dark overhead, and there were no lights in the open garden surrounded on all sides by Freedom Hall. Looking around to get her bearings, she found herself standing between a group statue of the Allies of Freedom on one side and another of a flying man with a cape in a heroic pose. DEDICATED TO OUR GREATEST HERO, CAPTAIN THUNDER, WHO DIED SAVING THE WORLD, 1996.
  16. "People are in the street with joy in their hearts, singing songs and embracing their families as they never have. That is something to celebrate," said Steve seriously. "As for the rest, I do not worship any of the gods celebrated in this season. I would only insult worshippers if I pretended to believe what they believe, and that would be unwise." He took a candy cane and began slowly unwrapping it, the plastic crinkling in his scarred hands. "As for my own holidays, I generally spend those alone, even now. My girlfriend prefers to take her holiday season alone as well, so I imagine I will spend it working with impoverished people at one of the feeding kitchens in town, and then rendezvous with her for the new year."
  17. None of them can beat that, so they all start falling. Go ahead and post, Electra: initiative time, everybody!
  18. 50%... "Sides? What sides?" demanded Rogue of Glow. "We are alone on this planet. Alone in this part of the galaxy, even. The Grue have overrun all of near-space, and the stars are silent. We may be the last outpost of Lor civilization in the galaxy. As for the humans, would you have me believe that after twenty-five years of watching us do the dirty work of the Reich, the Resistance will just accept us with open arms!?!" She waved her hand in frustration. "We were used to kill them, you know, and they returned the favor. They've sent assassins after us in the past, you know. People with bombs. Magnetic powers. They were dealt with. And you tell me that they'll side WITH us, after all this?" Outside the warehouse, Koshiro heard the jets against the backdrop of the still, cloudy night a moment before there was a flash of light in the sky, bright enough that for a moment it was bright as day outside. A second later, every light in the Wonderbus went out and the door popped open. In English, a warbling voice said from the dead screen in front of him "Beginnning eeeeleccctrooomagnetic repaaaaaiirrssss..." Inside the warehouse, both Sharls, Rogue, and the other Tronikians screamed and clutched the sides of their heads when the light flashed in the sky. "EMP!" Citizen yelled as he pushed past the wash of pain that had nearly knocked him out, frantically checking the connections to make sure they were all secure. "We're still live here! Transfer underway!" "They've come for us!" said Rogue, her holographic eyes wide as she stared up at the warehouse roof. Sure enough, everyone could hear the distant sound of helicopters. "You children wanted to see the war?" she asked as she stepped into the armored robot behind her. "Well, here it comes!"

  20. When Mark smashed Jason off the roof and down against the floor, the air around the man rippling briefly as invisible hands lashed at him to toss him up and down, he didn't see the hero of song and story anymore. Just a man who had let his own ambitions cloud the humanity who had once been his, one who had fallen from his lofty heights to become somebody who played with other people, other lives, for his own agenda. "Listen, buddy, I don't care whose father you are!" Edge shouted, the air around him beginning to hum ever so slightly. "We're taking you down, and we're not going to let you wreck this world for your own twisted ambitions! This is Freedom City, where we stop people like you!"
  21. "If you say so," said Stratos equitably. Having someone to talk to seemed to be calming him down, even if the look in his eye was definitely not healthy. "I think I saw a drain back up that way," he went on, pointing down the sewer line in the opposite direction from whence they'd come. "It leads up to their fancy garden of heroes or something, or as I call it the mushroom garden, because of what they have to fertilize it with!" He chuckled and said, "Anyway, sure, I can probably breach the defenses if I hit it with a big enough bolt of lightning from down here. A little tough of any of the old sewer gas, but they don't call me Dr. Stratos because I like to do things small! Aheheheh!" Dimming his lightning, he clapped Blue Jay on the shoulder and said, "Do you have anything to eat? I've been cooking those weird green geese whenever they fly over, but I think they're learning to avoid me. Too bad!" - "Mara has one of the most brilliant minds of your world. She and...the others will find us. It is only a matter of time. I am greatly reassured by the fact that we still live," he said seriously. "And face no horrors greater than this first one." He looked around at the city again and added, "Did I ever tell you how I was captured by piscine humanoids during that incident?" Steve was not a subtle guy, but he was trying hard to tell his friend something reassuring. "It was aboard their large submersible. They were very surprised indeed when I broke out of my restraints and began to beat them with my fists. And then I freed those roe into the harbor. That was...like this. Bad, very bad indeed, but it could be much worse." He smiled, but she could tell he was nervous too. Steve's mind was back on Earth too, thinking about Gina. Would she think he had simply left her if he disappeared? It was a grim thought, she knew he loved her, but doubted she could love herself. When they reunited with the others, Dorothy still carefully wolfing down the food Erin had set aside for her, it was Steve who said, "I think we should try and find the others. If not now then, then after first light." He could fly, and see in the dark perfectly well, but given how they had reacted to the sight of him in the day, Steve was no fool. "We have seen no sign of other survivors, no sign that there _were_ survivors, it..." He pushed himself past the thoughts that invoked and said, "We cannot leave them here. And they may have more answers than we have yet found ourselves."
