  1. Where else would I be from? thought Neko for a nettled moment before she responded to Bernadette. "Yes. I am from Iya Valley. There are many big, um, mountains," she added, gesturing up into the air. "But ma, er, towns are very small. I do not come to cities very much." She smiled at Miurne, looking down at her feet as her tail thrashed, and added, "Thank you very much. I learn English from my friend Owain, but his English is very old." She considered the other girl's words, then said, "Der Schattenwelt." The German she pronounced perfectly, with hardly a hesitation. "I know this. Like...Kantor. Die Ubersoldaten. You are German?" She shifted nervously on her feet, wondering if it was possible that there were two legacies of the Axis here at Claremont this year.
  2. "Pretty boy," said Eira with a smile, her voice whirring and clicking. "In the real world, Miss Americana must have activated another version of me already. They will never know about this-this-this." Her hand tightened in Pan's where she leaned against him, "I knew that the m-m-moment we arrived here. A shadow of a thing that has been. All this time, I just wanted to be - something more than I was. I hope you see a light..." As the wall of white closed in, Eira Katastroff considered her options and closed her eyes, and smiled as the last two years played inside her head faster than the human mind could follow. Until there was nothing else.
  3. Owain gave Luke a sharp look, seeming to lose some of his genial disposition for a moment. "Take tent and give good heed, man, we need not seem fearful to each other to seem a man." He considered a moment, then looked at James. "James! Yes, Master James, your name was given to me. I am Owain, Jones in your style, and we are to share a cell." He smiled, not seeming to mean the words with their weight. "We have just been comparing our various talents. Leon here has mastery over parchment, Simon can take the form of a cat, Luke is, ah, chafing us with grim tales," he added diplomatically, "and I am a knight-enchanter in training."

  6. "Ah-hah!" said Owain, his eyes lighting up at Leon's display of power. "Control over parchment, er, paper. I could have used that in my own studies before I came here, let me tell you!" he added warmly. "I have heard of this Harry Potter you speak of, but I have never read any of his books. On the plane here they gave me books by your Walter Scott that Ich might improve my kenning of the tongue of these times." He smiled, then said, "I too have traveled here from a distant age, Master Simon," he said to the cat-boy, "but tis more distant than two centuries." He raised his sword in the air, smiling as the well-polished, well-scarred blade caught the light. "I was born some five hundred and fifty years after the birth of Jesus Christ, in Logres, the fair kingdom that men of your age have dubbed Britain. So this age is full of much wonder for me, you will pardon if I am at times lost."
  7. Neko blinked a few times amid all the chatter in English and sighed softly. So much for 'this is an international school, with heroes from all over the world.' Of course they do not have many Japanese students here, she thought sharply. "Okay. I speak Japanese. Some English." Sketching a bow to Miurne, she took one of the muffins and took a big bite out of it, chewing slowly as she listened to everyone talk. "Bernadette. Rosalind. You are Greek?" she hazarded to Starshine. She tried to get a feel for the emotional temperature of the room; the two polite girls, the one who brought snacks, and the rude one, even if she couldn't understand what everyone was saying right away. Up close it was clear that her front teeth came to small, delicate points sharper than a human's, just like her nails. Behind her curled a tail that matched the coloring of her ears and fur, mostly white with a few isolated patches of brown. "And you are magic?" she asked Muirne. "Of the night - realm."
  8. "Yes," agreed Owain boisterously. "I missed the tour myself; my friend and I lodge two days out of the week at a sword-school in these parts, so she and I were moving into our rooms there. My friend is Neko," he said with a gesture upstairs, "she rooms on one of the floors for girls. She too has some connection to cat-kind," he said warmly to Simon, "the two of you would no doubt be bosom companions." He clapped Leon manfully on the arm and winked "So, good fellow, what are your sorcerous arts? You can tell us, we all seem to have the gift in this place."
  9. The cats looked up at Nocturne through slitted yellow eyes - then suddenly they were gone. And a girl was sitting there, a girl who seemed to have the qualities of 'cat' herself. Her hair was thick and mostly white with a few patches of brown that matched the colors of the cats that had been occupying her space, as were the large triangular ears that sat atop her head. She looked up at Nocturne through huge yellow eyes and wrinkled her small, upturned nose. A tray sat on her lap holding a single handless cup, adorned with the Japanese character '猫'. The girl herself looked Japanese, right down to a brightly-colored Art Deco kimono wrapped around her body. Counting inside her head to prolong the moment, Neko raised the steaming cup to her lips and said with the slow, distinct voice of someone speaking a foreign language. "You will." She set down the cup and let it and the tray disappear from her lap. "I am Neko," she said, pronouncing it like "Neck-O" in English as she folded her hands in her lap. She peered past Nocturne at the other girls and asked, unable to keep some trepidation out of her voice. "Do any of you speak Japanese?"
  10. The players report their roll and I tell them what it means! ? Have an HP for the inconvenience, Tiff.
  11. Okay, that's a pass: @Electra Paige gets a strong and vivid impression that: they are all in imminent peril. fires burning amid the mangled wreckage of the building, the smell of blood everywhere; where's Richard?! death from above!
  12. The cat purred at Starshine's touch, reaching up to catch her hands with its paws, then flopped back onto its legs and scampered into the common room too. Muirne saw this cat enter as well, trotting into the room and leaping up onto the couch next to its chunkier sibling. As the time-displaced Kentish girl watched, the two cats sat in nearly identical 'meatloaf' postures with their limbs tucked away under their bodies, watching her with bright yellow eyes.
  13. The air in the room was sickly sweet, enough that Calliope could feel it sinking into her lungs, slowing her movements, knocking her back without actually knocking her down. From the looks of the already fallen Secret Service agents and the Vice-President, this stuff was potent, but not lethal. "Fascist-" declared the speedster as they zipped around Ashley, throwing punches that came fast as speeding bullet. "government pig!-people-are-dying! you're-just-a-" Whatever Ashley was in the fast-moving anarcho-Communist's eyes they never quite had a chance to say, because Ashley fired a snap shot from the laser-equipped sidearm she carried. A searing red bolt sliced across the speedster's thigh, making them stumble and cry out an instant before Ashley brought the butt of her gun around and hit them in the jaw, knocking them down and tumbling against the wall with sudden explosive force.
  14. Fort save: 28 Init: 23 Having come in under 20, Tiff, consider Madame Raven under a slowed effect until she can get access to a rebreather or other means of not breathing the air affected by the knockout gas. (Thanks to Uncanny Dodge and Danger Sense, Ashley is not flat-footed just because combat has started) Ashley decides to shoot the guy attacking her: DC 25 Bluff check, then...she rolls a 1! OK, let's spend the HP she gets from being a Secret Service agent ATM... https://orokos.com/roll/911000 = 27! Okay, Speedster fails his Sense Motive check and is flat-footed https://orokos.com/roll/911001 = 27 Tou vs 27 https://orokos.com/roll/911002 = 23! too bad for him he is a minion. Okay, @KnightDiscipleis up as soon as I post IC.
  15. @Electra, give me a Notice check please!
  16. Richard carried on a telepathic conversation with Paige while Terrifica talked, that sort of attention-splitting multi-tasking something they both had long experience with. When their two cowls were done talking, Richard took out his phone. This was a recent 'investment in the future' he'd said half-kiddingly, though it had earned him a hug from Holly who had thanked him for 'finally entering the 21st century.' "I'm going to text our son and ask him to stop by," he said out loud for Terrifica and Archer's benefit. "I don't think you've met Will yet," he added for the former, "but he was actually in the Sanctum for...a hero thing a few years ago." It had actually been for a school fieldtrip, but there was no use having that conversation around even the trusted staffers of Supercrime! One thing they'd never done was an episode about Claremont, and for good reason. "I guess we could go out to Robotland and tell Talos somebody is trying to frame him," he hazarded at the same time, "but that sort of thing is just a little above our paygrade." What would have been an exciting adventure when they were younger now sounded dangerous, especially when you considered their worries about the robot infiltration of the superheroic community. Geez, he thought to Paige, I am getting old.
  17. "Mrow?" Another cat from who knew where walked past Starshine, sinously intertwining itself between her legs, and looked up with a curious expression. This certainly resembled the same cat as before, right down to the short little bobtail that looked more like a bunny's than a cat's. Perhaps lacking the nature of its identical twin, it flopped down on the floor between the two girls, looking at them expectantly. When Muirne walked into the common room she had a distinct impression that there was someone there who was neither of the two girls outside, but quickly that impression faded. The room seemed perfectly innocuous, just as she had last seen it before going on summer break, except there was a chubby white and brown cat curled up on the room's couch, watching her as it slowly and methodically licked its front paw.
  18. Gawain gasped, eyes going wide. "Enchantment!" He didn't seem bothered by the process of change and restoration, looking Simon over again before saying "A forced transformation is a foul spell indeed. You did well to escape from such a fell sorcery, friend." His face grew serious for a moment. "I dread me sore to think what magic can do in these times, when so few know to protect themselves powers of the Otherworld." He clapped Simon on the arm and said, "I have some mastery of enchantments myself, but only what I was taught by Menw fab Teirgwaedd when I was a boy." He considered, then said, "Two hundred years, eh? I have read something of those times. Did you e'er meet the mighty George Washington, or the first Lady of Liberty?"
  19. Gawain manfully clasped the other boy's hand, then declared, his eyes widening in surprise. "Say, you are unlike many! But I think I wot your kind; I know something of races besides Men. Are you of the Otherworld?" he inquired, looking the new arrival over. "I am Owain, here bearing the second name of Jones as is the style of your people. What is your name, good fellow?" Sword or not, Gawain was dressed in what were obviously old but fitting clothes for these times, a jacket that bulked larger than his lanky frame, and denim jeans that had seem some hard use.
  20. At the top of the stairs, a cat was waiting for them. Curled up in a corner where it was out of the way, it was mostly white with brown and orange spots on the body, watching them through wide yellow eyes. It made eye contact with the box-carrying duo, gave a distinct 'Mrow' sound, then turned and ran pell-mell away with the mad scramble of a cat running away from some invisible terror. With a slight patter of feet, it ran into the girl's common room on this floor and disappeared.
  21. It was terce, mid-morning; or perhaps 10 o'clock in the afternoon when a tall, rangy young man with shiny black hair in a neatly-coiffed pageboy strode into the first floor corridor and set down his duffelbag. "Alas, am I the only wight about?" he called down the corridor, not sounding terribly displeased at the prospect. "Fellows?" he called out, fumbling with his old-fashioned, carefully-wound pocket-watch to make sure of the time. Everyone else seemed to be coming and going to the upper floors, where he'd reluctantly seen off Neko. Tis the appointed hour! he thought as he closed the watch. Perhaps he was simply early. Shrugging, he settled down in the common room and drew his sword, resting it point-first against the floor beneath him as he held it by the short handle. When someone entered, he called "Ho there! Are you the Eagle Infinite?"
  22. "You've been our friends for years, stood with us at our wedding, and we saved the multiverse together. There's nobody else we care about as much." Mark considered telling her that he hoped that part about loving all his kids was true, because he was reasonably sure that in most possible futures at least one of his children with Nina would marry one of Erin's kids with Trevor, but he discarded that idea - after all, some things didn't need to be said out loud when everyone understood them. "We'll see how things turn out after the ultrasound." He and Erin talked a little more about news from home and news from Socotra, but by now Ritchie's patience was starting to get thin and Nina was probably worrying about them. With a smile and wave from father and son, Mark and Ritchie disappeared from the bathroom with a faint, audible pop. Everything was quiet now, except for Oliver, who first entangled himself around Erin's feet in sinuous catty fashion, and then began scratching at the bathroom closet door with great concern. Or possibly hunger, it was hard to tell.
