  1. September 26, 2011 The West End 9 AM Things were in a bad way in the West End, what with the upcoming apocalypse. The Gorgon was only about thirty-six hours from making contact with the Earth, her silvery shape as clearly visible as Mars in the clear Freedom City night sky, promising a doom for all humanity should she get closer. The Freedom League was fighting the Gorgon and her train in space; the Lab crew had gone into the sky to unlock the scientific secrets of the monster coming to devour the Earth. (Sure, that wasn't technically her mission, but good luck telling that to the man walking down the street listening to apocalyptic street corner preachers pronouncing the imminent doom of man to all passersby.) There was a war in space, but a battle on the streets was imminent. Street-level heroes had been busy catching crooks and putting down disasters, but there were so many threats. The heroes of the West End had reason to be a little understaffed these days, anyway...The flashpoint came outside a local bodega near the Espadas home, when two uniforms from the local FCPD station came out to move one of those doomsaying street preachers off the streets. This gentleman, though, a wide-eyed man with thick glasses and a "PRAY FOR MERCY" sandwich board hung around his neck, wasn't willing to give in. "What's the point of doing what you pigs say?" he demanded, his fear rallying the crowd of onlookers who'd been listening to his sermonizing (and, not incidentally, blocking the door of the San Domingo Market whose manager had called them in the first place) to shout at the cops. "We're all gonna die anyway! The supers have run off! They left us to rot down here on the streets while they ran away into space and into their fancy other dimensions. Don't we deserve the right to have a little happiness now before she takes us all!?!" he exclaimed, pointing to the sky as the crowd roared. Normally West Enders were a bit more skeptical than this, but nerves were fraying. "How dare these fatcat shopkeepers keep what they have when the end is coming. I say, let's take what we want and give them a taste of their own greed before we're all gone! Who's with me?"
  2. September 20, 2011 The Lab With the Gorgon's announcement, it became transparently obvious to everyone at the Lab that their time was up. They had to get a team out to the Gorgon now and throw mortal science in the face of the all-conquering space god in order to save all of humanity from the threat in the sky. And so it was that, mere hours after the Gorgon's announcement, the Lab crew was working feverishly on their planned insertion into Gorgon space in order to gather the sample nanite packages that just might give them the information they needed to bring down the mighty Gorgon once and for all. Of course, since she had turned out to be an body with the dimensions of the Earth itself, now cleaving her way through the Kuiper Belt on a course directly for Earth. She was 40 astronomical units away, having appeared in the middle of the belt thanks to her gravitic warp, and would be close enough to Earth to begin its conquest in just seven days.
  3. September Vignette (The Gorgon Comes!) For a week in September, 2011 from September 20-27, the World of Freedom sees among its darkest hours as the Gorgon, the all-preserving, all-transforming, comes to the Solar System to transform the planet Earth into a sterile ball of ever-devouring nanites. Though the heroes of Freedom do succeed in defeating the Gorgon before the planet can be shattered, the cost is high: there is global rioting and panic as she comes; weather disasters and tectonic shifts at her arrival, and finally the terrible chaos of her defeat. Worst of all are the threats that come from within, as the heroes of Freedom learn that the legacy of the Preservers may run far deeper, and be far darker, than they ever anticipated. Who: Any player who is interested. Characters who are involved in main threads may post Vignettes as well. What: Write the story of your character as they battle a world slowly going mad before incipient Armageddon. Threats include: Apocalyptic end-times riots in the Fens Giant plant monsters in the West End Incoming space debris (everywhere) Criminals, large and small, taking advantage of the chaos for robberies Space pirates raiding the Earth one last time Storms, earthquakes, tidal waves, and other disasters Plots include: Helping friends and family deal with the disaster Fighting bad guys Assisting with the evacuation of select people to other places Length should be at least one (1) page per character involved. When: The week of September 20-27, 2011. Your vignette is due September 30, 2011 at midnight EST. Where: Anywhere, as there are threats all over! Why: To stop the Gorgon from destroying all life on Earth, as well as to experiment with a big all-site event where everyone can feel included. How: Once your story is finished and proofed, post it in this thread. This way everyone will be able to see it, and play off it as appropriate. 4. As they walked, Heyzel did his best to explain the world of angels to the mortal man. He spoke of the ancient chorus that stretched back to the beginning of time, the various messengers who had once gone to Earth wrapped in fire and flame, their limbs in a hundred directions at once. "Much there has been, ah, misinterpreted. As Hindu artists showed the beings they worship with a hundred limbs as a metaphor, so too did the ancient Israelites depict the messengers of Yahweh as other-than-human to show their otherworldly nature." By the time they had circled back around, the smith had indeed finished crafting his armor for Gabriel and with modest pride (if such a thing could be said to exist) presented it to the godly hero. "The finest work I can give a man who'll be going back to the mortal realm before this day is out," said the saint with a smile. "If you were going to stay and join the heavenly host, I could armor you to fight all the divine creatures of Creation." "Gabriel still has several decades before that day comes," the angel reassured the saint. "What you have will do. Now, I think we have but one more thing to find..."
  5. With uncommon seriousness, particularly in the presence of a beautiful lady, Edge listened with interest as Ace and Bombshell made their presentations. But then, that was another trait he had in common with Jimmy. "Well, I don't know about the rest of you," he offered, looking at Wander, Midnight, and Cannonade, "but I'm ready to do this. I've got a suit waiting for me in my apartment in Geneva, and from there we can get out to the chateau. It's probably better if we arrive there separately and meet up, given that they may not be expecting an entire super-team to be there to confront them." He remembered the camaraderie they'd all shown in the fight with Meistermann on the plane. "And I guess we are a team," he added, looking from face to face in the crowd. "We all have personal reasons to fight Nazis, and we've all been in the business, or had family in the business, for a long time. Some of us have even been to Erde, and seen what a Nazi victory would be like." He put his hand on the table. "Let's do this. Not just for us, not just for the future...but for everyone who's come before."
  6. Trusting Fleur readily with his apartment, Murdock led the way onto the streets of Lincoln. He'd read the informational brochures for the area before moving in, and had walked the streets at night to familiarize himself with the region. In his mind, as they stood on the streetcorner and watched the cars go by, across the street from the barbershop and down a half a block from the local convience store where Murdock bought most of his food, he tried to put himself in the mind of those writers. A working-class African-American neighborhood; one with a strong tradition of community and family. Though Lincoln's had many problems over the years, it's a good, solid neighborhood that's managed to stay together despite adversity. The cars spewed hydrocarbons in the air, the people had a few thousand calories a day to eat, the streets were often dirty, and there was at least one feral cat in the neighborhood. For Murdock, it was a lovely place. "This is Lincoln," he finally said after a moment's awkward silence.

  8. Sharl is down an HP and Injured. (Ah, life as a construct...) Firehawk stole Blitzen's action, so he's still got one. Sage is up.
  9. For his own part, Sharl decided to continue distracting the bad guys. He tried to put himself in the mindset of one of the Freedom City high school kids he'd spent so much time watching on TV and on the Internet. "You big jerks!" he exclaimed, counting on his nigh-invulnerability in this body to protect him from any retaliation. "Koshiro's not a crook!" I hope! Putting himself between Koshiro and the bad guys, as he'd done, had definite disadvantages. "You're just a bunch of wreckers ruining your own home city. If you care about Detroit so much, you'd be doing something besides trying to beat up on a bunch of-agh!" Firehawk had concentrated on Sharl, reaching his hand out to squeeze into a fist. The electronic teenager gasped as he felt his body heat up, his signal suddenly sputtering and sparking, Sharl dissolving into visible static around the edges for a moment before he forced himself back into his signal, now looking scorched around the edges like someone suffering from a sunburn. Sharl was hurting, and bad: whatever that energy was had gone right into his projector. But he couldn't worry about that. Before the bad guys could put two and two together, he exclaimed, "Yeah, I've got superpowers! Get out of here, guys! You crooks wanna have a fight? Fight with Citizen!" Hoping his friends would take the cue, he concentrated as a blue corona of light formed on his chest into the shape of his symbol: the universal wi-fi code, and then he took to the air to shake his fist at them. "Let's do this!"
  10. Freedom Angel landed between the simians and their means of escape, with his glossy black wings spreading behind him and his halo glowing, he was the very image of every angel of legend. "Sons of the sixth day," he said with divine firmness, "hearken to my words. We are not allies of your tormentors; rather, we are champions of freedom and justice. If thee have been made slaves, we will overcome those who sought to be thy masters. If thee have been kept in chains, we shall free you as you have already freed yourselves. But if you flee from us," he added sternly, "then you go into a world of sin, where your enemies may yet find you." He extended an open hand to the jittery chimpanzee. "The good man says, 'As I would not be a slave, so I would not be a master. Take my hand, my friend."

  20. The Gorgon Is Here! September 20, 2011 11:56 PM The flash of light fills the entire sky over the Western Hemisphere, the glow of a nearly infinite number of neutrinos colliding with each other in a spectacular quantum cascade of tachyonic radiation the brightest quantum object in the Solar System for dozens of milliseconds. As the humans below look up, a _face_ appears in the sky, super-imposed on the warm, soothing glow of the half-visible Moon. A humanoid looks down on the Earth with a face as big as a planet; her eyes glowing green and her hair a visibly thrashing cascade of tremendous serpents. Those who know their lore of space will well remember that face: the Lor and their spatial traps have failed, the distraction of the Grue has been defeated: the Gorgon has come to their Solar System. When it, no, she addresses the scuttling, crawling world below her, it is through every electronic device on the surface of the Earth, audible in every language simultaneously and despite all that with a singular, terrible clarity like the thundering chords of the Apocalypse itself. The signal is easy to trace to anyone with the proper equipment, even mundane scientists with nothing more than a radio telescope: an Earth-sized body as dense as a planet has just appeared in the Kuiper Belt and is on a collision course for Earth. Those with powerful enough telescopes can see that terrible face in the depths of space. “I HAVE COME FROM THE FARTHEST REACHES OF SPACE TO PRESERVE ALL LIFE ON THE SURFACE OF THE WORLD BELOW AND DESTROY THE TAINT OF ENTROPY THAT LIES ACROSS IT LIKE A PLAGUE. THOSE OF YOU TOO COWARDLY, TOO FRAIL, OR TOO CORRUPT TO ACCEPT MY BLESSING HAVE SEVEN REVOLUTIONS OF YOUR GLOBE TO ABANDON YOUR WORLD LIKE THE CRAWLING VERMIN YOU ARE. FOR THE REST SHALL COME THE INFINITE MERCY OF EVER-LASTING PRESERVATION! THE GORGON IS, THE GORGON WAS, AND EVER SHALL THE GORGON BE!” And then the face on the Moon fades. And the world screams.
  21. I'll say you can spend your action this round hustling everyone inside, KD (particularly if you take the chance to slip into a bathroom and change). Interestingly, that will not trigger Blitzen's readied action!
