  1. "Forest and field are as fine a cathedral as any, if the heart is pure," Heyzel confirmed with a smile. He talked business with her for a while, describing the arrangements he wanted and where they'd need to be placed inside the building. His eyes fell on her hand as they talked, and his smile widened. "Ah, I see you're to be wed. How wonderful! When do you plan to have the ceremony?"
  2. "I've seen superheroes kill my friends in front of me," said Jack suddenly, his voice quiet and low so it wouldn't carry, his eyes flicking around behind his glasses to make sure no one was listening. This was something Taylor knew about, though it was rarely something he discussed. "Some of them died like monsters, hissing and growling in their rage. Some of them begged for the mercy their murderers thought they were giving them." He looked down at the table, and for once couldn't quite meet anyone's eyes, before he looked back at Erik. "Lynn doesn't frighten me. It's what she, and people like her, represent for my family."
  3. "I guess you guys are right," said Mark. He still looked, and felt beaten down, but his natural resistance to despair was beginning to return after talking to his friends. He wasn't falling any lower, at least. "I really should talk to the experts...and maybe my mom should too." He sighed softly, then stood up, reluctantly disengaging from that nice kitty. "Thank you for talking to me. I'm sorry I have so many problems right now."
  4. "Not very well," Heyzel clarified. "With infinite time and infinite space, most of the older inhabitants of Heaven dwell in the farthest realms, beyond where the younger inhabitants visit on a regular basis. He arrived there nearly fourteen centuries before my birth, after all. But he's a friend of my mother's, so he visited occasionally when I was younger." He smiled a little, then shook his head. "He actually was involved with my education as well, but that's a different matter. He won't be attending, of course, but I'm sure he'll appreciate it. Do you participate in organized worship?" he asked her sociably.
  5. "Because I respect you, Erik, I understand that what I'm about to say is unnecessary for you to hear. I just want to make sure that your colleagues are aware of it as well." When he spoke it was absolute assurance, as if the personality he affected around humans was gone entirely. "There will not be unfriendly visitors to our home." With the smile snapping back on, he added, "That said, we need to work out the ground rules for what'll happen over the weekend. Would you prefer capture the flag, or flag football?"
  6. Shouldn't have wasted an HP on that, but it still ain't bad!
  7. "Rally to me!" Freedom Angel called, his flaming sword a beacon of light as righteous warriors joined him in the battle against the dark. "We shall slay them all in their legion and send them back to the Adversary from where they came! DEMONS OF DARKNESS, TASTE THE POWER OF THE LIGHT!" And at that juncture he began the killing, falling amongst the demons like a divine wolf among sheep.
  8. "Actually, this is for St. Stephen's Day, so we have a week of preparation yet. Though the church doesn't practice the same kind of veneration of individual humans as other sects do, they do celebrate the figure the church itself was named for; Stephanos of Jerusalem." He hmmed, looking around, and said, "I would like something in hyacinth, please. Stephanos always enjoyed their smell, and I think he would appreciate them being used to honor his name."
  9. Jack patted his wife lightly on the arm and resisted the urge to glare at Erik. Erik hadn't known there was an issue there...and for some reason it seemed faintly hypocritical somehow. "Yes, that sounds close to what I'd imagined. Our friend the pixie took finding out my nature very badly. I understand she was considering hunting in the past, but fortunately she seems to have dropped that notion." His mouth crooked up faintly in an honest smile. "As for Doctor Archeville, you'll be glad to know that I've returned his hundred bucks. Since I'm no longer acting as his agent, I wanted to make sure you were all comfortable with my fulfilling your other friend's invitation."
  10. "Hello, Stesha," he said with a smile. "It's lovely to see you again." Looking around at the flowers, he smiled, a little wider. "This place is every bit as lovely as you described. It's such a wonderful thing for people to be able to come into a place like this and come away with as many flowers as they want," he said with honest, if naive pleasure. "I should have come here earlier. I'm actually shopping for my home at St. Stephen's."
  11. Reminding himself that he wasn't in competition with the man, Jack concentrated, studying Erik intently. Would I be so different, if I was him? It was a tough question to answer, especially since he had a feeling the 'right' answer wasn't actually correct. "For the record, I generally don't sneak up on my wife...on purpose." Except when he was in the mood, but that was a different matter entirely. "As for you, Erik, I don't really know what to say. If I was trying to frighten or offend you, we'd be having a very different conversation, and I certainly wouldn't have my partner and my son here." He studied Erik again and added, "So this weekend, do you think your team can handle it? I'm not talking about me, I'm talking about the personality side of things."
  12. Freedom Angel had gotten used to getting funny looks, at best, wherever he went in town. With his usual bluntness, he'd decided to simply live with that. Looks sometimes meant questions, and questions meant answers that he might be able to give to a city in need of guidance. So when St. Stephen's needed flowers for the special Feast of St. Stephen service, he decided to buy them himself. Taking money from the church coffers (carefully signing it out first), he simply looked online for a good flowershop, then took off, flying towards the downtown. A few moments later, he landed in front of Stesha's flowershop and simply strode inside, folding his wings close behind his back while he was inside.
  13. "I've heard worse," Jack replied with that same smile, giving Erik's annoyance about as much weight as he thought it deserved. He did his best to remind himself that he and Erik were in similar situations, and the other man had ever reason to be uncomfortable, but empathizing with other people had never been easy. He shot for charm, the better to keep himself from ruining the moment. "I ate before we came, but are you hungry?" he asked Erik. "Anything the two of you want is on me."
  14. Jack was uncomfortable himself, wearing sunglasses, but glad Taylor was there to help keep the baby happy. He wasn't a huge fan of the sunshine, but he could live with it, if only so Taylor and Jack Jr. got what they needed. He scanned the cafe streets, keeping an eye out for Erik. "He'll be okay. The sun's awfully bright today. Does he need his bottle?" They normally breast-fed, but kept a bottle out in public, so no one would see Jack Jr. latch on, and into, his mother.
  15. "Excellent." Glad they hadn't gone into some killing fit , one way or another, Jack moved on. "Taylor and I will meet you at that little cafe down the street?" It was the sort of ethnic place that catered more to people from outside the neighborhood with money: in short, people like Jack and Taylor. "In half an hour or so?" Offering to meet in daylight was quite a concession for him, but it was worth doing for something this important.
  16. Jack thought about antagonism and comradeship, about the times Erik had annoyed him versus the honest fear in the other man's voice. In the end, for once, he picked the answer he thought Erik would prefer. "The number is on the record. As for your name, I got that the same way I do everything else, my sword-wielding friend. With style." He chuckled, then added, "I take it you'd rather not meet at your place, then?"
  17. Date: June 2010 A few days before Avenger returned to the Interceptors' brownstone, the telephone rang at the Espadas apartment during one of those times Erik was there. Ellie picked it up and after a short, "Yes, he's here. May I say who's calling please?" exchange, handed the phone to her brother with an eyeroll. "For you." The voice on the other end was warm, friendly, and very familiar. "Hey, Erik. It's Jack. Taylor and I wanted to meet with you and make sure we had the ground rules in place for the game over the weekend. Are you busy now, or should we get together another time?"
  18. "You're going to be our doctor for the next while," Jack assured Viktor. "There really isn't anyone else we trust. Or anyone we could trust...between one thing and another." Turning to James, he added, "You did great work out there, Hellion." Walking over with the baby, he added, "Look at this guy. Isn't he great?" That earned him a loud wail, but one Jack was soon working to soothe. "Poor little guy, what a hard day's night..."
  19. The descriptor for all of Mark's powers is magic, given his genetic heritage. I'm keeping the Fortune Control and Area Blast intact in Mark's reality warping array, since they're his 'signature ' abilities. Please replace his other ranks as follows. Blast 13 (Extras: Autofire (2)) (PFs: Improved Crit, Power Attack, Precise, Reversible) (56 pp) Create Object 13 (Extras: Duration-[Continous], Moveable) (PFs: Innate, Precise, Progression, Subtle) (56 pp) Move Object 13 (Heavy Load: 100 tons) (Extras: Damaging, Perception Range) (PFs: Indirectx3, Subtle) (56 pp) Transform 9 (inanimate to inanimate) (500 lbs) (Extra: Duration-[Continous]) (PFs: Innate, Reversible) (56 pp) His "Move Object" is actually a reworking of Attack Teleport/Create Object, producing similar effects. In addition, I'd like for the following edits to be performed with Edge's ability scores: Reduce his Wisdom to 8, because it's Mark. This frees up six points. Spend an additional three points on his Will save to raise it to +7. (3 pp) Spend 2 PP on his INT, raising it to 12. Spend the point that frees up on Mark's Notice, raising it to 8 (+7) DONE BY SHAENTHEBRAIN
  20. I've gotten some complaints about Edge being too powerful. Shaen, can you help me out?
  21. Mark spends an HP to power-stunt this: Create Object 13 (Extras: Affects Others) (Flaw: Feedback) (PFs: Progression 20 (10 million feet cubes), Tether)
  22. "A mirror, a mirror, oh man..." Edge concentrated, thinking hard, squeezing his eyes shut as he summoned a mental image of a powerful, strong mirror like he'd seen on pictures of the Lighthouse or solar power arrays. But just he opened his eyes, he happened to catch sight of a lost Mylar balloon drifting by overhead, its HAPPY BIRTHDAY message just visible at extreme altitude. "No, wait!" Before Mark could stop himself, something remarkable happened. A gigantic thing began forming in the air over the city, a growing, towering cylinder as wide as the beam and more, stretching way, way up into the clouds, then past the clouds, then vanishing up into the stratosphere, a gigantic monument to Mark's magnificent powers that was larger than anything anyone had ever seen. It was a Mylar balloon, as shiny and reflective as if it was brand-new, but bearing the bold words HAPPY BIRTHDAY! in letters big enough to be read from the Moon. A string as wide as a ship's anchor cable came tumbling down, landing next to Erin and Mark. "That...okay, I guess that'll do it," said Mark, staring up at his creation with bafflement. "Yeah, that'll be tough enough! Use that! Quick!"
  23. Despite the deep depression he'd fallen into after his father's departure, Mark was still loyally making regular visits to the Young Freedom headquarters, and so he was down in the monitor room with the others, sitting alone in front of a computer, when the alarms went off. "Oh my God," he said, appalled, his black funk forgotten. Standing and addressing the others, he said, "We've got to do something! Phalanx, Psyche, can you catch that plane? Wander and Zephyr, maybe we can get out and do something about that beam?"
