"Ow!" The arrow sliced along Angel's wrist, drawing blood as she looked around wildly. "Who did that! I've got blasts and bubble gum here, and I'm all out of bubble gum!" Drunk and not paying much attention, she fired off a volley of blasts at nearby rooftops. "C'mon, I'll take you all on!"

Angel zoomed through the sky on her flying surfboard, weaving awkwardly. Divine had left her, the mob had rejected her, and the Freedom League had tried to do an intervention about her drinking. "Nosy Ca'n Thunder!" she yelled at no one in particular. "I hate you so much!" She caught sight of a blue and white figure in the sky and cussed, hurling a blast of energy that made Thunder curl and burn. She laughed in a thoroughly unpleasant way. "Oh, I see you brought friends! Well then!" Down below, people were screaming, and for good reason: Angel was blowing up the banners the neighborhood was flying to honor the anniversary of the foundation of the Freedom League, banners hanging on the side of crowded apartment buildings! With a nasty look in her eye, she closed in on the giant cloth Johnny Rocket, muttering some vile remarks about his sexuality.

The doors of Freedom Hall gaped open as the teens walked across the lawn to reach the building, a still silence in the air around them, as if everything else was cast in a dream. The illusion inside Freedom Hall was gone, the interior walls cast in slick, inky blackness, the windows casting a sickly yellow glare inside. Standing in the middle of the room was Rick Lucas, his hair gone wild, his hands moving before his face. As the teens watched, the world played out on those screens, a world twisted and warped by an old man's terror and power. There the first Lady Liberty was fighting giant Soviet robots; here Midnight and Raven were battling together against the machinations of the Conqueror Worm. And there before them, standing on a stage of whirling, shifting inky dots, the father of all their troubles looked down at them. "Well. I might have known it would come to this." "Dad..." Mark walked out in front, reaching up to him. "Dad, what happened?" "Mark..." The sight of his son got Rick off the podium, and his arms around his son. "Mark, I'm sorry. I wasn't...I wasn't finished yet. I don't understand what happened, but somehow, I got the power to make things better. To save you, and save everyone else. So I had to do it. You understand that, don't you?"- 48 replies

"I'm going to take you somewhere," said Avenger, making a decision as they both stood up. "It'll be a safe place." He certainly wasn't going to take a new vampire to his apartment, particularly with a new baby there, but he had plenty of safehouses she'd be able to use. "You'll have food there, and you'll be able to get yourself on your feet. And then we'll talk about what you want to do with your life."

Down below, an angel stepped from nowhere in a blaze of light. Freedom Angel, recovered from the injuries he'd sustained in the invasion, was now a very busy man indeed. Putting aside his sword, he moved to help dig for the wounded, his keen senses making him a natural bloodhound to the fallen. So many were dead, but a few were left that were within his capacity to help, those poor souls suffering from dehydration along with their injuries. He didn't stop to greet the superhero overhead, not when there was work to be done.

Freedom Angel studied the monster, no, the boy, for several long moments, before the sword in his hand vanished in a flare of light. Perhaps, once again, he was about to find a better way. "Come with me," he said, his voice gentle where once it had been angry. "Can you touch the ground of holy places, or are you barred from churches and such like?" -
Between one thing and another, and with a lot of teasing for the new guy, soon they were all out in the backyard, where soon the paterfamilias was on the grill, the kids were playing in the yard, and everyone had questions for Derrick. They were all loud and boisterous, but certainly not unfriendly, and they were all trying to make Derrick feel welcome. He even got to be part of the friendly call from Boris, the sibling away in California, who'd at least gotten a phone presence for the big family get-together.

The sword blazed bright enough that it cast shadows even on the sunny day. "There _is_ a power greater than the Unspeakable One's," the angel said with absolute conviction, the halo around his head glowing with special brightness. "One willing to do whatever is necessary to guard Creation from corruption and dissolution. If thou wish to stand with that power, my brother, tell me the truth." -

"You bear the mark of the Adversary. You carry foul works of blasphemy that corrupt the mind and soul of men." He thought of the zombie, and the cambion, and stayed that urge to strike again. How many dark powers shall I meet in this world? He heard the truth in the thing's words, but needed to know more. Truth could have many fathers. Especially from one of these. "Tell me where you came from." -
The kitchen conversation was briefly interrupted by the arrival of Stesha's father Paul, a middle-aged man in a sweater-vest, tie, and slacks. He was in plants just like his wife and daughter, though in a much more academic way than Annie and Stesha. He gave his wife a big kiss first, and his daughters a hug, before rounding on this friendly interloper."Hello!" he said with a big smile, shaking Derrick's hand with a firm grip despite his skinny fingers. "It's a pleasure to meet you at last. I'm sure you've heard that already, though." He studied him for a moment, then Stesha, a grin crinkling the corner of his eyes. "Are you two sure it was just the holidays that got you out here?"

The clouds parted before Kid Cthulu, and an angel appeared. Freedom Angel frowned as he hovered before the monstrosity before him, his every instinct crying out at him to attack. Prayer had guided him to this abomination, looking up from the steeple of his church below, and his own research told him who had inherited the Blackgate Necromonicon. A halo of divine glory around his head, his dark hair flowing in the breeze, he spread his mighty wings as light gleamed off his divine armor, a flaming sword gripped in his right hand that burned with a light sharper and more defined than the sun itself. "You!" He pointed the sword. "You were among those who helped defeat the infernalist White Knight and his minions when they attacked the police dirigible. Why did you do that?" -

Eventually the young heroes put the gondola down and rescued the hostages inside, just as ground-bound police and other emergency personnel arrived to take away the wounded. White Knight had quite a few things to say about Fulcrum and Kid Cthulu's parentage when he woke up, but fortunately the power-nullifier the police had brought happily fitted over his mouth. Reporters were starting to arrive now, with many questions for the young heroes. Fulcrum, as the biggest and most photogenic, got the most attention. "Fulcrum! Are these new members of the Interceptors? Is your team expanding its roster?" -

"I...what?" Mark tensed, looking down at his chest. "No, no, that was part of the...the trick." He put his hand on his chest, right where his friends had seen him impaled at the beginning of a long, terrible day. "It hurt, and I was cold. And then I was here." He looked down at his mother, then slowly, slowly put her down on the couch. "I thought maybe I'd died till I heard Sage. That I'd died and gone to Hell, and that was why I was in a version of my room that I couldn't leave, with no one to talk to." He squeezed his hands into fists, staring down at them, hard enough until he felt his nails bite into the skin. "But you said this isn't a good place, is it?" he asked, looking at his friends. "It's not real. And maybe I'm not real, either. So we need to bring...bring back the real world. Even if something bad happened there. God, let's get the Hell out of here." He ducked his head and kissed his mother's cheek. "I love you, Mom."- 48 replies

"Why yes, yes there is." Annie took Derrick by the hand and led him around the side of the house, where an ample herb garden was growing. Annie might not have her daughter's powers, but it was readily obvious where her talent for plant manipulation came from. Pointing to a row of hanging plants with different herbs and small vegetables hanging from them, she said, "It's getting harder for me to reach some of the basket herbs these days. Could you bring me down the oregano, please?"

With Klansman and Valkyrie having made their escape via the Klan-plane, and with White Knight battered and beaten into unconsciousness (notably he had _not_ choked, but had needed to actually be throttled), the heroes stood victorious over the bad guys and had a cluster of rescued hostages to finish saving. And perhaps a balloon gondola to guide to a safe landing! -
Lemme know when you guys have this one. ;)

The windows blinked dark for a second, flashing with inky blackness, before the doors of the Lucas family blasted open forwards and backwards as if a hurricane had passed through the house. No longer were they in the peaceful suburban neighborhood they'd left behind, now they were on the green, tony lawn of the old Freedom Hall, the building itself hanging open for all of them. Evidently Rick Lucas had responded to their taunting, as he'd brought them right to his front door. Wide-eyed, and more than a little pale, Mark tended to his mother. "She's passed out, I think..." His voice was high, and more than a little frightened, as he looked at the sleeping Martha. His hands were opening and closing, real fear in his eyes. "I'm going to take her downstairs, to the panic room," he said, not quite able to look out the windows at the world gone mad around him. Scooping her up in his arms, he said, "You guys can figure out what to do, and then we'll do it," he decided, moving away from the group and towards the stairs that lead down to the protected room his father had built for them after the Terminus Invasion. It was supposed to be a safe place, and maybe because of that, or because he wanted it so badly, it was there.- 48 replies

"My dad...my dad died? What?" "In the Terminus Invasion," murmured Martha. "He died, saving the Centurion..." Suddenly, she shook her head. "No, no, that's not what happened! He wasn't there when Omega attacked, because he was home with me! Because he was worried about you!" She reached up and squeezed her son's hand. Sage found the psychic landscape of a world warped and twisted by one man's will, the psychic fingerprints of Rick Lucas in the sky, the ground, the sea, the air, and inside the minds of nearly everyone there. But she could find a definite track, one that let her follow the mind of the man who'd made this place. "Oh my god..." A pale-faced Mark was breathing quickly, fighting back the urge to go into shock. Rubbing his midsection unconsciously, he said, "If...if my dad is here, but he's hiding, and it's like the old days when he was younger..." Sage's mind found that mind lurking in the heart of Freedom City, a human soul resting at the heart of the architecture it had built around it. It took her a moment to recognize the building, and another to plunge inside to find the heart of the beast. "He'd be in Freedom Hall. We didn't move into this house until just a few months before I was born. He'd...he'd definitely be in Freedom Hall." He hugged his mother lightly, kneeling next to her on the couch, and promised, "It'll be all right. We'll find Dad, and we'll make it better. It'll be okay." Sage found Rick Lucas inside a warped version of Freedom Hall's computer room, its walls covered in the black, inky dots of rewritten reality. She looked at him, he looked at her, and the old man's face turned red as he yelled "GET OUT OF MY HOUSE!!!" And when Rick Lucas shouted, the _walls themselves_ spoke in reply in everyone's ears.- 48 replies

"He...he what?" Mark's eyes widened. "Erin...Erin, that's crazy." For the first time, Mark's friends heard doubt in his voice. "I mean, I mean, my dad doesn't have any powers. He just lived through a lot of really weird stuff, and maybe my grandfather wasn't...but that's not good to talk about!" He folded his arms, looking nervous, his cheeks coloring. "And why do you guys look so weird, anyway!?" he asked, looking from Eve to Trevor to James. "How do I know you're not part of all the crazy things that have been happening today?" "Mark?" The teenagers all looked downstairs at the wide-eyed woman standing at the base of the stairs, looking up at them with staring eyes. "Mark, you're alive!?" Martha's voice was on a thin, cracking edge. "But I saw...but I saw..." Intoxicated, overwhelmed, she staggered back, nearly collapsing. Mark automatically made a gesture her way, and the walls seemed to reach out and catch her, gently guiding Martha to the couch. "Mom!" He ran down the stairs to her, his white face coloring a little at the sight of his mother in distress. His arms went around her, unthinking help when he couldn't think at all. "Mom, it's going to be okay. It's going to be okay, I promise. We're going to find Dad, and everything'll be okay." He looked up at the others, his voice shaking. "Do you know where my dad is!?"- 48 replies

Chloe closed her mouth, efficiently silenced by an older sister who obviously had some experience with that. Annie Madison, for her part, was all smiles for Derrick, the cheerful woman giving him a noticeable onceover. "Hello there! I've heard so much about you, it's so nice to finally meet you!" She smelled faintly of herbs, but from the faint dirt under her nails it wasn't for the same reason as Stesha. "I'm afraid Stesha's father is running late from the office today, so it's just me running the show. Don't worry," she added to Stesha, "your sister is running the kitchen."

At James' words, a bubble began forming in the door over the mark Trevor had left there, the scar he'd left widening into a crack, then a split as the bizarrely warping wood split like melted plastic. A storm of inky black dots erupted from the hole, just missing all the assembled heroes as it blasted down the hall and was sucked into the wallpaper just behind them. A few moments later, Mark rushed out, his face white, and before anyone could say anything he was hugging everyone. "Oh, thank God! Thank god! I knew you guys would come find me!" He was still in the same outfit he'd been wearing the last time any of them had seen him, though the marks on his chest and back were gone and the shirt torn apart by super-EMTS was still there. "This has been a really, really creepy day." He blinked. "Wait, so is this whole building built like my house?"- 48 replies

"Heh, and it's all true. Good to meet you, Derrick. Come back and meet the family." Jasha introduced Derrick to his wife Lorraine, a charming woman in a Northwestern T-shirt, carrying a smaller version of Jasha named Daniel who gabbled happily and waved tiny arms in Derrick and Stesha's direction. Stesha's little nephew was a boisterous boy in the heart of toddlering, but still young enough to show off his cuteness. Everyone in the family seemed very happy to see Derrick, though it was hard to tell with all the boisterous teasing they seemed fond of. "So you're a nuclear scientist?" asked Chloe, the youngest sister, with frizzy short hair and the rimless glasses college kids thought were cute, who had evidently drawn the wrong conclusion from Stesha's messages home. "What field are you in?"

-I'm locked in my room and I can't get out. But it's not really my room. It's like a really close copy, but there's all kinds of stuff missing. I tried messing with the door, but it's not even really a real door. And my powers are doing crazy things, so I don't know what's going on. Did they make you think you died too?- he asked Eve guilelessly. -Why is the Terminus always trying to kidnap me? I'm going to try something.- Trevor's laser cutter burned into the door lock, cutting at the hinge and significantly weakening it, before something really bizarre happened: the laser suddenly stretched and lengthened like taffy, making a mockery of the laws of physics as the beam was pulled out of the laser emitter, sucking itself into the wall like a cartoon. He'd left a scar, and a good-sized one, but the door itself still stood. As they watched, the door bulged again, directly over the scar, a faintly audible cracking sound heard.- 48 replies
