"That...does sound bad," said Richard, looking worried himself for a moment. "Usually when superpeople are taken their captors keep them around, but...yeah. Woof, that really makes you think. What do you think the Curator's goal was?" asked Richard, who'd heard a lot of possibilities among the people he'd interviewed - and the interviews of other people he'd seen over the years.- 20 replies

Richard had been married to Paige for a long time and been with her a long time before that, but he still stopped talking for a moment to enjoy the view. His own bedtime rituals could be done in the time it took the bathroom door to swing shut behind him. "I'll take care of it," said Richard easily, "good to stay in touch with the Millennials. Maybe the team'll have a bigger angle on it, maybe bring in some space people..." He studied Paige for a moment longer, then said, "Babe, I know we're gonna be all right, and I know this was maybe a long time coming." He pecked her on the back of the neck and murmured, "But those guys are idiots taking you off television."

"I have a short talk with Fleur a couple of days ago," agreed Richard, "she gave us that story." He considered the conversation some more, decided to risk probing just a little without going out of his way to bring back bad old memories, then said "When you knew what had happened - how did you feel?"

"Can't it be both?" said Richard with a shrug. "And you're the one who said I needed to pay more attention to social media," he said with a laugh. "Kinsley and Darin aren't that bad. Come on, between the alien shapeshifters, time travelers, and magic lizard people that you and I have personally met, is it really so crazy to think that there are things out there we don't understand and that people are keeping from us?" It was an old - well not exactly argument, but a difference of opinion about how the world works. "Besides, if they are nuts, giving them a platform will give us a chance to show where they're wrong. That's gotta be a good thing, right?"

"Oh my, you are an interesting bunch, aren't you? Monsters from above, from below, and in-between." The witch smiled, her teeth black, indicating Wraith, Sea Devil, and Nightscale in turn. She didn't mention Jessie - either not knowing Singularity was there, or remaining discreet about it. She focused her one good eye on Nightscale, seeming to stare directly into his soul. "Did I trouble you, child? I can bring him back to life for you, though it will cost me dear..." She lay a withered hand across her heart and seemed the picture of grandmotherly sadness. "I can hear you," Sea Devil croaked accusingly, as usual frustrated at how limited the languages of the Surfacers was. "You sound wrong." She struck her trident against a metal bulkhead, hard enough that the whole ship ran. "You made terrible things that should not be, and you frightened my friend. Why are you?"- 65 replies

Richard laughed and slapped his knee. "Yeah, I've been there! Sometimes whether it's robots, or demons, or your own evil twin, sometimes all you can do is punch the guy in the face." Richard frowned - he really hated that guy. "How did you feel when you found what had happened when you were gone - that so many people have been replaced by robots, and then they'd attacked the city?"- 20 replies

Richard paused a beat and considered that one - and decided to move onto a less painful subject. Making someone like Miss Americana relieve personal trauma was - rude. Not good television either, but what were they going to do, cancel him? "When did you start to get a picture of what was happening?"

"Oh..." said Richard, feeling lame for saying it. Images of what he'd do if something like that ever, ever happened to Paige, or his kids, or anything else. "That must have been very hard." Physically as well as emotionally, jeez. He took a moment to think, then said, "What happened next?"

"Hey!" said Richard, his hand over his heart. "There's no way my greatest hits album would only take ninety minutes! I bring the quality every time!" He grinned and said, "You know what we could do-" She picked up on the thought without him having to say it, and he dodged the lipstick she whipped at him with telekinesis only thanks to time-powered super-speed. "I am pretty sure that thing in Manila was just somebody's cover for cocaine." The 1970s were also far beyond the recollections of their core audience, which in all honesty was probably one reason they'd been canceled - for all that Richard didn't like to dwell on that too much. "The thing with the robots? Huh." He returned her lipstick while adding, "You know, we've got those two Internet, uh, consultants we could turn to, I know they have a thing about the Curator they've always wanted to do. And there are enough people around who remember that we could get a lot of interviews."

"Oh, I'm sorry," said Richard, sympathy thick in his voice without actually breaking the moment that might have led her to talk. "Take your time." He'd already spoken to her former sidekick up in Washington, who'd done his best to sketch out the circumstances of the Americana "family" during the Day of Wrath - but Citizen's story had left out a lot of the details. He considered offering her a tissue box if she needed it - but was that something robots did? It took all kinds. "Had there been any advance warning about - anything?" Is it racist to ask if robots can recognize other robots? Better not, he decided.

ic The Old Girl Is Dying On Her Feet (IC)
Avenger Assembled replied to Avenger Assembled's topic in Bayview
Anna Cline lacked the genetic gift for telepathy that ran in her daughter-in-law's family tree, so instead she spoke aloud when she said, "You don't have to worry about them or the people who sent them, Will. Ever again." For a woman who preferred to end her sentences with an exclamation point, it was a distinctly odd thing to say, and the cool surety in her voice sounded - well, it sounded like a woman who had begun her professional criminal career around the time the Korean War was coming to an end. Richard looked at his mother, then at his youngest son, then at Holly, and said in an unusually sober tone himself. "We'll talk about this later, Ma." "...what?" asked Holly, looking around with saucer eyes. "Are you keeping secrets from me?" she demanded. "I am not a little kid anymore, you know." "Ha-ha, you're a baby!" said Bryant cheerfully, pointing at Holly. "And you're a grandpa!" Holly spat back - and suddenly, her eyes wide, she looked at her parents, hand over her mouth. I'm sorry! came through loud and clear and perfectly sincere at Bryant stared at her and exclaimed, "Wh-what? Grandpa is so crazy!"- 25 replies

"We'll do fine," agreed Richard. "I just want to do better than fine. We're the most amazing family in this whole town, we deserve better than a memorial special where all our guests say goodbye." He put his hands on the back of her chair and kissed the top of her head, then had a thought. "Maybe we shouldn't be in it. No, honestly, I'm not talking about the strike again!" he added quickly. "Something with no Corner With Hologram and Fast-Forward, just something that's about the super community. Something we weren't involved in at the time." Which was hard. They'd been involved in a lot of things over the years.

"Oh yeah," said Richard cheerfully, "my son Bryant loves the junior set. I remember when we got him the new set, he started shrieking with laughter when he found out he could make Tiamat poop out the bad guys she'd eaten, so that became the new favorite thing for about three days." He gestured with his hands to show what little Bryant had been up to, letting his own mike get pinned on with a smooth familiarity with the moment. "So we're going back eleven years," he said as the boom mike operator moved into position, "jeez, doesn't seem like that long ago. Bryant's four, we didn't, uh, even have him yet." He shifted in his chair, took off his sunglasses and said, "Okay, it's eleven years ago, the sky's about to fall in. What are you doing?"

"Yeah," said Richard, "those cosmic entities and masterminds, they say they're too advanced for us primitive meatheads to understand what they're talking about or how their ancient plans unfurled, but you ask me, they put their pants on one leg at a time, just like you and me. Except the ones who don't wear pants, I guess." He stroked his chin for a moment, then added, "So when it all happened, what did you do, specifically?"- 20 replies

"Oh yeah," said Richard as easily as if he'd listened to Mali describe hitting a home run in Little League, "that'll happen." He turned to the camera and declared, "Long-time fans will remember Erde and all its creepy little variants from Secrets of the Multiverse in Season 10, don't miss it!" He winked at the camera, then turned back to Mali. Better make sure we clear that stuff about the Sanctum with the League before we broadcast, he thought. He'd been there himself but that was back when he was fifteen and trying to steal the Centurion's costume with his mom. "Now, before all this happened, what had you heard about the Curator?"- 20 replies

"You know how it is," said Richard with an easy wave as the crew went to work, "It's always better to work with your own gear." While the crew was finishing setting up (and Terry, gently jostled, was taking notes), Richard asked, "So even I have a hard time keeping up with Freedom City's greatest inventor - what's your latest project?"

"Oh yeah, I've known some Muay Thai guys," said Richard earnestly as he gestured with his sunglasses. "Tough customers, really knew their business. Back in the early 90s there was some kind of big martial arts competition in Freedom City, so the streets were crawling with, uh, martial artists for quite some time." The crew smiled faintly, evidently at some private joke, before Richard said, "Okay, okay, moving on. Crimson Tiger, Muay Thai champion...you were in high school eleven years ago. What were you doing about the time everything went down?"- 20 replies

Richard forgot about his insecurity at the tone in Paige's voice, and appeared behind her, hand on her shoulder. "We can do that," he said easily. "If we get out there in August, we can take them out to the State Fair." They'd both learned, long ago, that a great way to avoid being recognized was to go somewhere that everyone was looking somewhere else. Richard had been visiting the Iowa State Fair on and off since Clock Queen and Tempus Fugitive had robbed the tills and stolen the butter sculpture 'just to have' forty-five years earlier. "Jeez, this is what, three?" He considered reflectively, then said, "I'm glad she's found something she actually wants to do with her life."

Angelic Staggering to her feet from the earlier rocking, Eira turned and looked at the shimmering rainbow portal, lightning crackling through her, taking note of damage but focusing on the scene in front of her. A moment later her automatic distress beacon activated, broadcasting the last six seconds of what she'd seen and heard - which were mostly her shouting threats at the pirates, a flash of lightning around her, and a moment later the vortex tearing open in the sky in front of them. Time went by and neural impulses kicked their way through a diamond-pressed mind and as the doorway swung wide, she spread her wings and dived down as deep as she could into the powder hold in the very belly of the ship, down in the most sheltered places it held.

Richard looked down at the backs of his hands, conscious of how the freckles there were just a trifle larger every year. Maybe they both looked twenty years younger than their actual ages, but even that was - well, he didn't like thinking about that for too long. His mom looked great close to ninety but sometimes people offered her the senior menu anyway. "I don't want to retire," he muttered. "And yeah, I know you don't mean retire retire, but it...shit." He ran his fingers over the faint stubble on his chin. "I'm sorry, baby, my head's not in it tonight." He rubbed his eyes and said, "But if we're going to the Moon, I'm getting a spacesuit this time, because I do not want to start bouncing off the walls again."

Avenger Assembled replied to Avenger Assembled's topic in Rivers, Lakes and Oceans
The zombie head's eyes rolled and said in the tones of a worried schoolboy "Oh, ich hoffe der Kapitän ist nicht angry..." After much consideration, Sea Devil snapped the helm of her armor shut. Aquaria considered telling Jessie to go home and tell Erin and Trevor about this, but she knew her friend wouldn't leave her down in the darkness with monsters alone. "You will hear me if there is trouble...Dagon the king," she quoted softly after speaking to Jessie, "in his raging...Hail Hydra, Immortal Hydra, cut off one head, two more writhe to take its place!" And then she leaped into the darkness, landing with a wet thump. The faint green lights on the outside of her armor cast an eerie illumination inside the interior of the submarine, which looked long abandoned and forgotten save for what seemed to be soft, clinging strands of something that tasted organic as it clung to everyone's skin. Sea Devil led the way towards the rear, the creepy, claustrophobic interior close around them all. They found the singer in a room none of them knew enough about this vintage of submarine to recognize; a room of gears and valves and more of those webs, and in the center of them their queen. She was singing and stirring a pot over a fire that burned impossibly inside such a place, as if a campfire had been plucked from the shadows and placed within. The woman's face was lit in a sickly red light by the fire as she stirred a bubbling pot of - something. "Hello," she said, and her face was impossibly old, one eye rheumy white, her black, shining dress a sharp contrast to her looks. "I'm so glad to have company at last." She cocked her head and said "oh, you brought the lieutenant, did you? A shame he fought so poorly, after so long." She made a gesture with her hand and suddenly the movement and soft sounds from inside Luke's sack stopped abruptly.- 65 replies

Once they were settled in for their interview, Richard leaned back in his chair like a man relating to his old friend. They were sitting around a conference table and seemed perfectly at ease, at least on Richard's end, the cameras rolling and the boom mike overhead as if he'd been born to be here. "Thanks again for having us here, Crimson Tiger. Now I am sure most of our viewers know Crimson Tiger, heir to a legacy as old as time, the deadliest woman on two continents, but why don't you tell us a little bit about yourself?"- 20 replies

"We'll take it nice and easy," said Richard, joining her in the chair opposite without seeming to have moved. "First we'll do introductions, then we'll talk about your experiences. Usually with hero stuff I try and share some of what Paige and I were doing when it all went down, but we were up chasing yeti in Bhutan when the Day went down. By the time we got word from our satellite team everything was all done. I recommend the place if you've never been, by the way," he added, "great views, nice food. Turns out yeti don't show up on cameras, though, so we wound up having to dub in their voices over an artist's rendition!"
