Mark couldn't help but grin at the sight of Phalanx's costume, Devil take the seriousness of the moment. Heh! Good one! "Nice look, Phalanx." He climbed on Erin's back with the perfect trust of someone who'd never fallen, adding, "I'll watch your back on the way in. Stay low as you come in, so we don't get noticed by anyone looking up," he added to Erin.
-
"I'm fine," said Mark with a smile. And sure enough, Mark was fine, as near as Alex's examination could tell. Maybe a little uncomfortable around her, but far less than a normal boy might have been under the circumstances. He studied her back, an unusual seriousness in his eyes, though that smile never quite left his lips. "You're looking good for a new parent," he murmured to her, his smile broadening into a teasing grin.
-
It was not true that Mark Mason Leeds never studied. Rather, he only studied the subjects he thought were interesting. Immersed in a hardcover edition of the CLASSIC ADVENTURES OF THE GOLDEN AGE OF THE CENTURION, he looked up from his studies as Alex approached with perfect timing. "Hey, Alex!" he said sociably, giving her a wave from his position beneath one of the overhanging trees. "Come on over!" He guessed she had something on her mind. Alex usually did.

Jack applauded politely when Ace was finished, leaning close to Taylor. "So, do I get to pick your selection?" he teased. "Or are you going to leave that up to the madness of the crowd?" He grinned and added, "There are so many to choose from, and I think the birthday girl deserves the very best. That's why you brought me along, isn't it?"
-
A few minutes later, Mark had a huge sack of beach stuff in a cloth bag the store luckily had for sale, and was tossing it over his shoulder like a big sack as he followed James out of the store. "Let's hit the beach," he suggested quickly. "And the water." A little seriously, he told James, "I want to see how fast I can go. I've ridden motorcycles and stuff, but never a really fast speedboat. I'm sure I'll figure out how to use it."
-
"Consequences of silence. Also dangerous." Avenger looked around at the homeless men, palpable menace radiating from him. He knew it would be hard to compete with whatever had injured these men, though, so he let his aura of danger be directed at the situation rather than the people around them. "Do you think they'll stop? You can keep that head. If you help."
-
"Not a problem," Mark reassured her. He pulled his sweatshirt off over his head, revealing his uniform underneath it, kicking out of his bulky sweatpants to do the same thing. It was a good thing he'd thought to wear his costume today, he thought! "Meet you guys up there," he told Mike and Alex, holstering his grapple gun as he ran for the roof. They were going adventuring!
-
He hugged her tightly, his hand on the side of her face as he looked down at her. "We'll get him back," he promised her. This was an enemy he knew nothing about; he could be confident that after so many victories, they'd overcome one more foe together. "His apartment?" he suggested to her. Tactical comfort, the comfort of ideas and plans, was the best he knew how to give. "We may actually find clues there, if we're lucky."

"I'm not allowed in casinos," said Edge apologetically. "Not just because I'm underage," he added, knowing that was the big thing that set him apart from the other adults here. "My powers do weird things there," he admitted. "Just as long as I don't get on the gambling floor, though, maybe it'll be all right." He hmmed. "Of course, gambling at casinos legal here, Mr. Arrowhawk," he said politely, not wanting to sound disrespectful. Maybe things were different in Scotland. "Maybe if we find an illegal gambling place, though? Like an illegal dog-fighting ring or something. Then we could beat those people up and use that as a way to get the attention of the big bad guys?"
-
"I'm in," said Mark without hesitation. It didn't matter why there were demons after James; he was their friend; they were there to help him. "I don't know anything about old churches," he added quizzically a moment later. "I mean, outside of St. Mark's over in the West End, but that's just the old Episcopal place my uncle helped fix up. It's really nice, it's the second-oldest church in Freedom City."

"I do my best," said Jack with a smile, putting his arm easily around Taylor as he sat down alongside her. "I'm sure Ace will teach that microphone a thing or two. Hi, Lynn," he told Grim with a careful smile. "Nice to see you again. So is the whole gang showing up?" he asked Taylor.
-
Jack gave Grim a long look. "Not every vampire in town follows my authority. If you see one who's acting dangerously, he probably is dangerous. I'd appreciate a heads-up about something like that, if the circumstances allow it. As for my eating habits and my relationship with Taylor, I don't see that's any of your business," he told her with surety he hadn't had a few nights ago. "If you trust me, and if you trust Taylor, that should be enough."
-
Jack focused on Taylor as he sang along with the cheesy 80s pop ballad, shutting out the distractions all around him with the focus and drive of death itself. He put his heart and what passed for his soul into the music, rocking and dancing along with it in an undignified, cheerful sort of way that bespoke far more dedication than talent. When he was done, he took the smattering of applause from the onlookers and waved the microphone around. "All right, who's next?" he called with a laugh. "Who'll fight the dragon of music?"

"Well, he..." Mark scratched his head, then had an idea. "Here, let me give the phone to my friend Wander. She'll explain everything." He handed the phone over to Erin with a little shrug, having realized he actually had very little he could say to Phantom. Generally he wasn't one to worry about not knowing what was going on, but this was fairly important. And Erin knew the score! Generally, anyway.

Angel-Eyes (PL13 NPC, Tier 2)
Avenger Assembled replied to quotemyname's topic in Non-Player Characters
I don't like the Power Knuckles. That's much too broad a use of Nullify. -
I'll let you finish writing your backstory before I make any comments or approvals on the character.
-
"Uh, hello, Phantom," said Mark, bobbling briefly at her curt reply. "This is Edge, we worked together fighting those SHADOW guys? Something's happened to my friend James Prophet. I heard you might be able to help." It was a lucky guess. Wasn't everything?
-
He squeezed her hands, feeling her pulse beneath his fingers, then put his arms around her. "We'll find him," he promised Taylor, his tone hard steel in reassurance. "Whatever it takes. Do we need to bring Grim in on this one?" he asked quietly.
-
"Yeah, I got a number," said Mark, who was already dialing it into his phone. "Ace said she's real busy, but this is an emergency. Any luck finding James?" he asked Alex as he heard Taylor's phone start to ring on the other end. "Phantom was a pretty smart lady, maybe she'll know something." It belatedly occurred to him to ask someone who knew more to talk to Phantom, but he was sure he could brazen through. Besides, she'd already picked up!
-
Mark was like a kid in a candy store as he cheerfully went about gathering up all the gear he'd need for time at the beach. He'd never worried overmuch about sunscreen, but he picked up a low-level bottle so he'd tan, and gathered up a bright red swimsuit to swear. "Hey, this is colorful," he said aloud, wandering down to join James. "So do you come here often?"
-
"Oh, God..." Jack ran his hands through his hair, making plans as fast as he could. "I'll go, then, if you're needed here. And whoever else you need." He looked her dead in the eye. "Anything, Taylor. Just tell me, and I'll do it."
-
Jack swore, just once, and put his hand on Taylor's back. "We'll get those bastards," he assured her. "I'll come with you," he promised her. "There's no way they'll see me." He thought of Jackson, so warm and alive, so very human; he knew just how much Taylor loved him. "Do we have time to get anyone else?"
-
Jack was up on his feet when Taylor began talking, his face set as he heard the anger and fear in her words. "What is it?" he asked her, shutting easily aside the casual ease he'd been projecting before. "What's wrong?"
