Steel Shade (PL10) - NPC Tier 2
Avenger Assembled replied to Kaede Kimura's topic in Non-Player Characters
Why give him the action flaw on his powers? He's an NPC, just give him the PP. -
Is-is someone born in 1988 really middle-aged? ?

Judy glanced at Danica, briefly confused - then her glowing eyes widened as she seemed to catch the turtle-girl's play. "Yeah," she offered, before she concentrated and went back to her usual self, shooting Ashley a shrug and gesturing to the aliens around them before she said to the teacher, "we'll stay out of the way, Ah promise," she said winningly. Between her and Danica there wasn't much anyone could to stop them, and so as the motley crew of alien kids around them mostly settled in for a nap (outside the ones obviously peeking at the very interesting novelty that was the teen heroes), Danica and Judy were given access to a flat-panel screen that looked a little bit like an iPad - albeit an old, battered one. Reluctantly, Ashley sat down to join them, and seemed to surprise Judy by showing them exactly how the space technology worked. "Here, it has a holographc keyboard, or you can manipulate what you see by hand - here, turn this far enough and it'll display in English, at least for things it can translate. It looks like they're using standard Lor tech," she murmured to the two teens, "so it picks up the local language from information broadcasts. Tetchy as hell, though, especially something this old." The display did turn out to be for children; it appeared to be a smiling face of indeterminate species that was asking WOULD YOU LIKE TO PLAY? in letters that appeared over its head. Lon was looking at Pan, an interested look on his face. "Maybe you're not magic - or maybe you don't know as much as you think, hm?" He sniffed the air, then added, "Personally I just came here for the fun of it, but lots of the other crew are here so they can eat. Not a lot of pickings out there these days, you know what I mean, hmmm?" He sniffed, baring pointed teeth, and said, "He's not _my_ admiral, kid. Just the boss."

With great concentration, mystics and magic pooled their powers against the accumulated wards of the Cult of Vhoka - mighty barriers indeed, as befit a cult whose power crossed a whole world. It took multiple attempts and precious time across a night that they all knew was slipping away, but with one last great effort the outer wards dispelled. Sea Devil lent her power to the effect too; eldritch magic of a watery sort curling along the edges of Surface magic, helping their spells slide their way in past the eldritch wards like a key fitting into a lock. With the wards down, the outer door of the temple began to rise, the thundering of the waterfall that had been pounding underneath growing louder. Up here it was a long, dizzying look down past the falling Niagara of bottomless sea down to where the main body of the temple lay below; but more urgently to notice there were bodies. Or what was left of them, anyway. Sea Devil made a strangled noise when a head rolled past her and struck automatically with her trident, catching it with a sickening schlump before it could fall into the turbulent waters at the temple's edge. At least I did not catch it with my tongue! she thought quickly. There were other heads here too, and parts of bodies - but it was hard to tell what had done this to them, and where such an assailant might be - at least until one took a close look. The bodies had been piled against the inner side of the door, which was marred with deep, narrow gouges and the marks of failed spells that had evidently not cracked it own. The armored Deep One peered into tiny Surfacer eyes and repressed a shudder. Would only a piece of them live on, in wherever it was that Surface Men went?

"It is a secret mortal men were not meant to know," said Eira with a portentous smirk from Abby's other side, having finished her side of the project and passed it off for the actual cooking phase - not something she actually had much experience with, though it was easy enough to access the relevant Youtube videos. "Fortunately some of us are neither." Leaving Abby with Ryder, she took Davyd's finished potatoes and onions over to the oven before asking, "Do you ever model? I know the mainstream organizations exclude metahumans but you could probably make money as an independent, yes?" She smiled thinly.
-
Eira flew with Pan - she'd shown him how slow and wobbly her magnetic flight was away from a large city and was content to take his hand and thoroughly fail to suppress a smirk. "Maybe we should stop by the window of that girl you like, hmm?" She laughed, squeezing Pan's hand, and said, "It has been an exciting night already - but as we are already in trouble most likely, why not see what else we can do?"

Everything seems fine on the phone as far as Danica can tell! =D

"E-everything is good," said Eira, shooting Miss Americana a look of profound gratitude as her wings reached their full extension. They had been, Miss A knew, a sign of what must have been an all-too-human vanity - it would not have been difficult to build her magnetic flight into the actual body of her robotic form, but Eira had insisted on the wings. As the wings slowly retracted, Eira smiled at Shift and said, "You will not regret it. Miss Americana and I are collaborating on my own new body."

Let's have a Sense Motive check, @Electra.

Danica's mom was an old hand at this, and promised to call the school with no more than a faint tremor in her voice, though the line was awfully staticky. "Are you sure you don't need to worry about where you are?" "My daddy's gonna be in the sindcut," said the boy who'd spoken to Pan helpfully. "We'll eat fruit every day." "Wait, you can just call people from space!?" demanded Judy, who looked to be going from one shock to another. "Yeah, uh, Earth is hooked into the Lor communciations network," said Ashley, putting a hand on the back of her neck for a moment before she looked away. "Should we-" Judy started to ask. "No," said Ashley firmly without actually raising her voice. "No, we need to think...we can't start shooting here, not with so many civilians around. I can probably get us out of this room. What's your plan?" "Hmph," said Lon suddenly, looking in the general direction of the students without actually making eye contact. "Magic, is it?" He studied his clawed fingertips diffidently before commenting, "I have a few tricks of my own. You kids wouldn't be planning to cause trouble here around all our younglings, wouldja?" Most of the kids, though, not all, seemed to be spreading out cots and blankets and big warm rocks (for the lizardy among them) for naptime.

Sea Devil hesitated, frowned, then struck the gate with her trident with more authority. "CAN YOU HEAR ME!?" she bellowed at the gate, sounding annoyed as her allies joined her. "I can hear their spells talking in the walls but they act as though they do not hear me." She opened her armor and sniffed the air, a sound like a snorting seal, then made an alarmed noise that seemed to come from something other than the powerful stink that lay around the place. "I smell blood," she commented, pointing with her trident at the door. "And guts. In there."

Sea Devil: 26 There are formidable passive defenses around the Temple - mighty wards that may need some time breaching. The DC to breach them will be 30 (if you use countering) and Aid Other actions will apply if you want to do it together. There are active defenses too - places where a caster could hurl down curses and worse from arcane battlements above your heads. But nobody is there at all.

The teens went through the spin and then again, a dizzying, whirling ride that really did strain the nerves of anyone who had an inner ear. (Eira seemed to be enjoying the whole thing the whole time, yelling at the craft to go "Faster! Higher!" with a look of exultant glee on her face.) When the group was done, they wandered off, Eira's arm looped through Pan's. "Hm. Wifi is down," she commented, frowning briefly as she looked around at the others before seeming to shrug and go back to her date. "No matter. Hey boys," she said to Leon and Luke, "are you ready for a brown, greasy hamburger? With milkshakes?"

"I'll do it," said Hvarlick, falling to his knees before his daughter's bed. "Please, take me away," he implored, hands out in front of him. "Anything you want, as long as it saves my daughter!" "Anything?" asked the ghost, and there was indeed the echo of something familiar in that tone, an echo of a little girl's knowledge of her own mortality - or had it been the robot who had the echo the whole time. The robot squeezed Pan's hand and looked about to speak, giving him a grateful smile. "I want to go home. I want to go home and tell my parents-" she admitted softly - before her counterpart broke in on the conversation. "I have no interest in you," the ghost told Micah cooly. "Only in what is mine. But there are - so many of you. All three of you, in your costumes..." She looked at Micah, and she looked at Lulu, and looked at Pan the most of all - and never gave a single glance to the robot that bore what might have been her face. "I remember..." The ghost looked down at one translucent hand and squeezed it. "...I wanted to be a hero...like them..." She stepped forward, right through Dr. Hvarlick, and before any of the other heroes could react, she'd passed through Magda Hvarlick and settled down like a child laying down in a bed, her ghostly form merging with the surprised little girl. Magda gave a startled, loud breath and sat bolt upright in her bed, the alarms around her bed going wild as she exclaimed in a voice much firmer than her earlier breathy whisper - "I don't hurt! I don't hurt!"

At Thorne's arrival, Lady Horus declaimed, "Lo, she comes as if summoned! The magic is strong this night indeed. Behold, companions, the Archmage of Bedlam herself!" She raised her ankh with her left hand, rising into the air, and declared, "Follow me that we may save our witness tho he bears the face of dread Anubis!" before she took off into the darkened streets of Bedlam, a shining comet of light. Wadjet said a bad word in Spanish and said, "Ah dammit. She can't smell anything with that thing on and she's faster than a car in the air. But she says the day she rides in a car when she can use her powers is the day they put her six feet under," she said to no one in particular. "Shotgun, cabrones," she added before leaping into the open front passenger window of the car, her smoothly polished paintball gun perched on her lap. "Hope you have insurance!"

"You are all so nice!" Aquaria croaked cheerfully to the Surfacers, who had gone from asking which name she preferred to calling her a master of magic. That was only a little bit true but there was no reason to worry them when they were about to battle together against the forces of the False Devourer. "It is Sea Devil when I fight," she assured Ouroboros as her armor (which decidedly did not look magical - indeed looking more like a Star Knight's armor than anything else) closed around her body, leaving only her face faintly visible through the armor and her voice echoing with a mechanical undertone to its booming bass. "Let us go to their doors!" she said, and sliced a hole in the air in front of them with her crackling trident. A rent opened in the air, tentacles wrapped around its edges, revealing the exterior doors of the Temple of Vhoka. Without another word to her companions, Sea Devil hopped straight through. On the other side, Aquaria knocked by dint of her trident on the great doors of the temple. "Behold!" she bellowed. "We have come among you!"

The girls ate, something Judy could only really do in Lulu's presence and something she still enjoyed, even as she knew to do it in moderation. Judy was obviously nervous, jumping occasionally at the noises the house made, but seemed to be more relaxed by the time they'd finished. When they were finished she sat quietly for a moment, then seemed to come to a decision - taking out her phone and tapping quickly, then holding it between her hands. "Ah...Ah'm not going to just sit around like a lump. If you really think you can get me out of this house," she said to Lulu, her voice getting intense, "Ah can show you where one of my pickup points is. It's still a while before Ashley's flight gets here but it's better than just...just sitting around doing nothing. Ah've already done enough of that in mah life."

Eira smiled too, quickly, before looking down at Micah and trying her best to keep an insufferably pleased expression off her face .(She was not very good at it.) "You certainly spent your energy, yes?" She winked at Pan and added, "I should visit your room more often. It is good therapy for you. We should not linger - the unusual weather was noted by local radar," she added diffidently.

Eira seethed visibly before responding crisply, "It is important you know what is true and what is not true - or you will make stupid decisions, yes?" She turned and looked at Ryder, her scowl fading a little, and admitted, "Ryder shows an acceptable regard for the lives of others." She cocked her head and stared at Black for a moment, eyes briefly unfocusing - and suddenly a smile burst across her face and she snorted through her nostrils. "Hah! I have thought of weaponizing such a thing myself but the use of mind-altering sonics raises ethical questions." She looked at Davyd and called "Speaking of - why do you adopt both the senses and the appearance?" She didn't sound offended, just curious. "Would it not be easier to pick one way and go down it, Abby?" she asked with a wink at her 'cousin'.

"Ooh, gold!" It wasn't just the two pirates paying attention now; the gold seemed to get the attention of all the little kids, who were swarming around Pan as if he'd brought an exciting new treat. "Are you in the sindcut?" asked one little boy, his mouth already stuffed with the big strawberry-looking thing Danica was chewing on. The kids had been happy to share at the sight of the tortoise girl, getting in close and crowding around her, some reaching up to tentatively pat-pat-pat her shell. "Hah, well, that's very nice!" said Lefty, peering at the gold with great interest. "But there's gold on any planet that's had vulcanism, right? So we can go visit one of them if we just wanted any random gold." "So why do you want Earth's gold?" asked Judy, whose glowing was also getting the attention of the kids, though none with as much interest as Danica's. "Not _all_ of it!" declared Jubat, sounding annoyed, "where would we even put it? We just need enough of it to make our bones. Speaking of which, see you kids later!" And then the lizard people were gone, leaving just Lon and Benny at the door. "Here's you a commlink, kid," said Lon suddenly, tossing something from his belt to Danica that turned out to look like a small flipphone. "Better not call the cops, though." He grinned wolfishly, showing teeth.

"This is a bad neighborhood," croaked Aquaria to Justice, glad she had remembered the English word. "Vhoka is the False Devourer and he is big trouble. He tells his cult that they are the great hunters and that at the end of days they will eat. Hah!" She laughed at the self-evident absurdity of such a notion, then struck her trident on the ground again for emphasis, and then said, "This is Ouroboros," pointing to Huang. "It is a strong name - it means the serpent that devours itself. But do not try and eat anything here," she added, "the beasts that swim in the Bottomless Sea are not for the hearts of Surface-Men. We should enter their lair - but there will be many traps and tricks. Vhoka is the False Devourer."
