Alex nodded her head, reaching out to thread her fingers with his, "I know. I think I'm going to juggle a few classes so that I can get a college degree right after Claremont. I mean, she maybe here a bit earlier than we intended but we have to take care of her, don't we? I mean, if that future is fixed and stuck, I'd rather die knowing that Zoe's going to be taken care of. Or is that way too morbid?" She gave him a faint, lopsided smile at that.

There was a thump as she dropped to the ground so that Erin would hear her footsteps when she approached. Touching Erin when she was still in a temper was never a good idea, but now that she was more on the depressed end, Alex closed the distance and put one hand on her shoulder. "Of course we're going to find something. We may already have found something useful." Alex let her voice infuse with the warmth and confidence she carried with her, "The reason I'm going through all these stacks is it might come in handy later, when we do go get James back. Look, worst case scenario, James will have to show up here to bring hell to earth and we'll be waiting for him. That's why I'm trying to absorb all of this information now, so we can stop him. Not just for the world, but because James deserves better than that. I know how the brain works, Erin. Even if they break him, they can't destroy him. James will still be in there somewhere, and I promise you, we'll be able to bring him back out."

"It's going to make it much more obvious when you're doodling, that's for sure," Alex teased, one hand lightly touching his with easy affection. She had a few more bites of the chicken before her mood turned a little more somber. Mike felt the emotion shift before he saw them flicker accross her face. "Mike..." she glanced up at him, "What do you think of Zoe? Of all that?"

'You know what to do. It's going to be okay,' Psyche's booted feet landed on the ground and she moved to catch up with Edge, her eyes on James. Her senses automatically checked the area, noting the demons around them. At the moment, she was focused on providing the communication link between the team. It was up to Phalanx and Wander to get his attention. The mental link touched the thoughts of each member of the team, allowing them to communicate with Psyche as the bridge.

"What would you like me to do, Erin?" Alex set the coffee down before she burned her skin gesturing with it. "We need information. There's nothing too fight. I have searched the city. There's no more demons. There's nothing out there that we can pummel into telling us what to do." She sighed and shoved the sleeves of her sweatshirt up again as she clicked a few buttons on the computer to freeze her current place. "We can go exercise for a bit if you'd rather. Run through the scenario, see if there's anything we didn't see the first time through."

"You rebel," Alex teased him with a laugh. "So, you cut your hair and have to express your inner teen rebellion some other way?" She bumped her shoulder against his companionabally as she began to cut her food into bite size pieces. She smiled and added with rather ridiculous shyness under the circumstances, "I really do like your hair like that. I can see your eyes easier."

"Stop it!" Alex said, exhaustion making her voice sharp, "We will get him back, and if I have to, I will put his brain back together synapse by synapse. James could have told us more sooner. We could have done things differently. But we made our choices and we made the best choices we could have. We were outmatched and outmanueverd and if we'd gone for help, we might not have made it in time at all. Maybe if we trained more. Maybe if we were stronger. Maybe if James had us there from the start. Maybe, maybe, maybe. It doesn't matter right now. What matters are the choices we make from here."

Alex settled back down on the blanket and said with laughter in her voice, "Your mom also thinks tofu is a tasty source of nutrients. Remember the time that she made organic everything for Halloween. The sugar cane candies were decent but the tofu kibobs weren't. I'm still convinced that's what killed the shrub outside." While he lit the candles, Alex shifted the plates around so she could cuddle up against his side to eat rather than face him over the picnic basket.

"We only lose when we give up," Alex said soothingly as she held her hands out for the fresh cup of coffee. She hated the taste but at least it kept her functioning. Eventually Mike would show up to hussle her off to get some rest, but Alex was pretty sure she'd have another few hours before he decided to track her down. "And we're not going to do that. Phantom also said that he was too valuable to them to let him die. As long as James lives, we'll keep trying. And we'll succeed." Cupping her hand around it to absorb the warmth from the mug, Alex floated up from her chair to watch Erin's pacing, "If there are any heroes still alive today that have travelled to hell, Mark will figure it out. Maybe he can find a way to talk to Eldritch. We've left a message for Phantom. I'm sure if she can help, she will."

Alex shivered and cuddled closer, knowing she wouldn't have to remind him that she felt the cold even if he didn't. Mike never forgot that his friends weren't as impervious to things as he was. Especially not her. "We should eat the dinner you prepared." Alex was the first to break the companionable silence and she turned her head to brush a kiss over his cheek. She grinned at him and teased, "You put all that effort into it. It shouldn't go to waste."

Alex floated in behind Mike and glanced around, doing her best to smooth out the yicky emotions that the cultist had stirred up in everyone. She slanted a look over at Mark and asked telepathically. Should I see what I can find out from their thoughts before we call the police to pick them up? Her booted feet touched the ground and she straighted the skirt with a quick smoothing geture. It seemed rude to ask about mental probes in front of the people they were planning to rifle through their thoughts. Even if they were terrible cultists, she didn't see a point to being rude.

"We'd have to know which hell to even start with. There's any number of hells referenced in literature, even sticking to the Judeo Christian mythos. There's seven layers in Dante's inferno, the Catholic interpretation. I don't even know where to start calibrating the transporter to try to pierce the dimensional barrier." Alex sighed and looked at the cold congealed coffee, making a face. Without even a gesture, she sent the coffee whizzing back towards the pot and emptied it telekinetically. She continued her conversation with Erin without even hesitating, an ease of manipulating her surroundings that she'd never known before. Alex hadn't even begun to examine the surge of Terminus energies since the fight. There just hadn't been time, "I am sure there's a way. There are probably several but I haven't found any yet."

It would have been easy to take that the wrong way and grow offended but, especially with her shields down, Alex knew exactly what he meant so when he kissed her again, it muffled her burst of joyful laughter. When she pulled back, she was breathless and flushed and very happy. Trustingly relaxed in his arms, Alex tucked her face against his shoulder and watched the sun set with him, "I'd wait forever, you know that. I never said I wanted to. You're just worth it."
-
"I don't know." Alex admitted, too tired to volunteer anything like a theory at this point, "I don't know anything about magic, or theology. At least, nothing concretely useful. I just keep thinking if we'd known more. If we could have planned better somehow." She sat back in her chair, scrubbing one hand over her face and through her hair. Her shoulders slumped inwards. It was her job to be the 'smart one', and Alex was feeling woefully unprepared. "I don't even know where to begin."

"It's only fair, go ahead and pick one. I only regret that I'm going to have to go up stone cold sober. The price I pay," Taylor replied, her dimple flashing as she laughed. She couldn't remember the last time she'd smiled so much. She twisted to reply to Lynn, resting comfortabally back against Jack as she did, "You should pick that Highlander song. You know 'born to be kings' and all that."

Alex was easy enough to find these days. Sitting at the Manor's giant databanks, she looked small and very young as she clicked through the screens of information, searching for anything that might help them understand what had happend to James. Except for the corona of ambient power surrounding her, she looked waifish as she sat with her legs folded up in her grandfather's leather chair in worn jeans and one of Mike's sweatshirts that swallowed her fragile frame. Her eyes were smudged with faint bruises and a half drank cup of coffee had long ago gone cold next to the large keyboard.

That was all Alex had been looking for, all she'd ever been looking for, and she relaxed into his touch the moment Mike reached for her. Alex's arms went around his neck naturally, her lips soft under his. They were fortunate that the woods were a good distance away from other people. If Mark's kisses had strained the control of her shields, these blew them away. Of course, Mike already had open access to the emotions in her brain, so the effervescent joy that poured off of her was something he was already privy too. I love you too.

Psyche didn't think about leaping after James as she launched herself from Phalanx's grip. She twisted and kicked free, the corona of her own flight power flaring into a bright light around her as she dove after their fallen friend.

Alex shook her head so firmly she almost dislodged the flower tucked behind her ear. With it dangling at a bit of a cock-eyed angle, she slipped her hand into his, "No, you don't understand what I'm saying. I just don't want you to jump into something just because its what I want. You know? I mean, I've been waiting for years so it's not a big deal to wait longer. That's all I was saying."

"I'll always be in your life, Mike. We don't have to be more than friends for that." Alex reached out to touch the back of his hand, "No one's going to come between us. No one could." It was honest and heartfelt, her brow furrowed with concern. The last thing she wanted to do was push him towards a step he wasn't ready to take. "I mean, I know what I feel but I can keep waiting, you know. I don't mind."
-
"I know it's not about Zoe. I'd kinda like you to explain why this. Why now. Why me." Her voice turned wistful. Alex had always known his emotions, as well as everyone else's. It was both a gift and a curse at times. She set her glass down so that both of her hands were free to gesture quickly while she spoke. "I mean, I want to hear it from you, you know. Please?"

Psyche whimpered softly in her throat, bending her body over James protectively as she kept the forcefield around his broken body. She couldn't help but flinch as Wander dove in between her and one of the demons but she simply curled herself into a tighter ball over their fallen teammate. There was too much water around to risk dropping the sheild, so Psyche tried to make herself as small a target as possible as the demons advanced.
