  1. "Go ahead and ring the doorbell, why don't you?" Phantom agreed, her smile a dangerous curve of white below the shadow of her hood. This was the sort of moment she had trained for and weariness fell away in the face of the oncoming threat, leaving only the hyperfocus of the fight and the surge of adrenaline. She floated up to the top of a hastily parked car and braced her feet. Phantom's expression darkened at the threat, her shoulders squared under her cloak. She brought up hands that crackled with eldritch witch light. "I am so very tired of demons."
  2. "Found it. It's got someone too." Phantom's senses snapped back to the area like a broken rubber band. "A lot of magic too. Might be traps." Gathering her cloak around her, she took point. While they might be very well able to hurt her ghostly body, her senses gave her an edge in looking for magic.

  5. "I do," Alex said with a quiet confidence. She was still getting used to glowing but her mental talents were stronger than ever. Between that and the budding relationship with Mike, and the support of her friends, she had enough confidence to step into the conversation in a way she wouldn't have months ago. "I can lock us all together mentally. I didn't have the power before but I can do it now. Words won't work as well, trust me. If negative emotions strengthen them, our love can weaken his demonic side." She picked her mask off the console and settled it into place on her face. "We'll go underground as far as possible. Even with using our powers to hide, its risky to fly. They may have more senses than we're aware of. The tunnel will take us to Riverside, then we'll have to sneak or fight our way there." She tapped a few keys to bring up the layout of the park and pointed to an open area. "We'll drop cover here and take the high ground. Zephyr and Breakdown will clear our perimeter while Wander and Phalanx engage James. Edge, you're with me. Our big gambit will be my mental assault so that's where I want your luck to be. If that fails, we'll focus on dropping James as quickly as possible, Zephyr and Edge will join in on James and I'll help Breakdown hold back the demons for however long that takes. Clear?" She glanced around at them and then held out a single hand to the center of the group, "Freedom forever?"
  6. When there was only silence, Alex cleared her throat once and spoke for the kids, "Thank you. We won't let you down." She disengaged the phone and turned her swivel chair to face the group, her eyes dark in her pale face. "I have an idea. James has got to be in there somewhere. If we can just get to him, maybe I can jog his memory with ours. He wouldn't want this. If that doesn't work, I might be able to take over him and force him to shut the gate down." Her tone was distressed but resolved. Alex hated using her mind control powers against anyone, much less a friend. "Then our last case scenario is knocking him out. Good?"
  7. Alex settled herself on the blanket, tucking her skirt around her legs. Her smile twinkled at him playfully as she teased, "I should have dressed up then. I didn't know what you had planned - I didn't peak. This is perfect." She shifted to accept the glass with a smile of thanks, "It's all perfect."
  8. "Of course I made it. There's no place I'd rather be, silly." Alex landed in front of him with a good deal more grace than her first attempts in this clearing. She looked up at him with shining eyes as she accepted the boquet. "There's a flower for just about every color," She enthused with what was one of her highest compliments. Alex always thought things lacked enough color. She glanced up from the flowers, her cheeks pinkening as she looked him over and smiled, "You look handsome. I like the haircut."
  9. Alex let go of Mike's hand and silently moved to fire up the computer's video display, her fingertips clicking away at the keyboard while the older superhero talked. "Listen," Phantom said urgently, ignoring the outbursts, "We can only give you one shot. The physical gate is nothing you can destroy. The power to tie the worlds together is coming directly from James. You have to stop him. Ignore the gate itself. He's your key." Phantom's voice boomed through the speakers as she tried to condense years of training and a week of study into the salient points, "Violence gives demons strength. All negative emotions will feed them so use it sparingly. The gate will collapse if James wills it to close, if he's unconcious, or if he's dead. Those are the options we have. Good luck."
  10. Alex pulled the tulip and note from her door, stuffing the latter in her pocket. The riddle was a simple one. Of all the memories Mike had picked today, he'd left out her stubborn insistance on learning how to fly. It wasn't something they could have done in the backyard, of course. The government would have had a fit, to say nothing of Alex's mother. Instead they'd snuck off to part of the forest with an unusual amount of rebellion for them. Which meant there was only one place Mike could be. She jogged down the steps to the quad before taking off in a shower of sparkling energy. Flying always put a smile on Alex's face. Today, however, Alex was beaming brighter than the setting sun as she zipped through Freedom City's sky and down to Wharton Forest.
  11. She closed the phone with final click and it vanished into the void between her fingertips. Later, she would count the cost of sending children to war. Later, she'd face herself in the mirror. Now, they were simply running out of time. She turned to him and simply nodded as she raised one hand to ghost her fingertips over his cheekbone. She didn't mention her feelings, but the emotion was as obvious as it was silent. Anything aloud would have sounded too much like a good-bye and Phantom had no plans to die today. With a single pop, they slipped through the void and onto the street corner and Phantom flipped her hood over her face.
  12. "It's Phantom. If you've got speaker, now's the time to put it on." Conferring with Alex, they were able to hook up the cell phone to the Manor's computer system, allowing Phantom's voice to come through the speakers in the command room. "I'm not sure how much you're seeing where you are but outside, it's hell-on-earth and this is only the start. If we all survive, I'll appologize for putting you in this position. I'm afraid right now, I don't have that luxury. You see, it's going to have to be you." Phantom's voice didn't pause as she kept speaking. She didn't have the time to do anything else. "There's a main gate, where Centurian's statue stood. That's where they'll expect me to head. We're going to give you as much time as possible but you have to stop it. You have to close the gate."
  13. Taylor glanced between them as they hashed things back and forth, managing to refrain from wincing until Grim brought up the group hug. Considering she was the least invested in the emotional turmoil of the day, it did seem a little churlish to cringe into Jack's side. If terribly tempting. "Can we do one at a time awkward hugs instead? It's easier to get out of if I phase at inopportune moments. Otherwise I end up half in one person and half in another and then it just gets weird." She did scoot out from under Jack's arm to give Lynn the promised hug, still rambling, "Not that phasing through someone isn't weird to begin with. I can't help it as a startle reflex though." That alone led to occasional awkward moments. Fortunately, Jack knew full well what was likely to happen if he snuck up on her.

  15. Luckily - and wasn't it always lucky - Mark's cell phone jangled over on the console where he'd set it down. It jangled again, the read out displaying the number for Phantom's phone, if any of the kids remembered it.
  16. Phantom didn't look up. She didn't need to. The shock, although anticipated, of the demon hordes was enough to set every mystical sense she had jangling. Instead of looking out the window, she turned her face to Avenger. "It's time. Call the team." She paused, finally turning her face to the sky. The moment she appeared on the battlefield, they were going to be up past their necks in demons. She had to stop this. Had to, and every demon would know that. Even if they couldn't get to the gate to close it down, they might be able to buy the children time to accomplish it. It was a desperate gambit for a desperate day. "Make sure they know what they're signing up for." Phantom lifted her phone to her ear to place a call of her own.
  17. Psyche dropped to the ground, running directly into the sprinklers, "It's not acid, it's water. Holy water!" Ignoring the spray as well as the battle that surged around her, Psyche darted forward until she was within arm's reach of the fight. It was more than she'd ever tried to cover, even in simulation, and conditions were less than optimal. Stretching her hands out, she focused entirely on covering James's body with the glittering manifestation of her power. Psyche could feel the strain in her ears and sinuses as she demanded her brain accomplish the impossible. Shutting out the battle and the danger, Psyche put her formidable will to the task. It had never failed her before, and it didn't now. Sparkling power coursed down her arms and surrounded James in a protective coccoon. "Got you. I've got you."
  18. Knowledge Arcane (untrained): 1d20+8=15 Power Stunting Force Field offa my Telepathic Array to protect James from the water: 28 PP: Forcefield 7, Impervious 7 with Affects Others and I will spend my HP from searching for James to clear that fatigue.
  19. Well, that's probably a little unneccessary. Fixed now I think?
  20. That was some cut and paste fail right there. Fixed.
  21. Alright, I'll rework for that. Hmm, well, if I rework I can get the save on that up to cap. Sure, why not. Its not a power I'll ever use. Well, thematically, I want it to be something her brain just regulates. Like her heartbeat or body temperature, or glucose level. Her brain protects her frail physical form. Eventually, I'll buy off the glowing part as the terminus energies settle down. I tried not to change her saves and skills dramatically around as that didn't make sense for the powerup she just recieved. I'm fine with where they're at currently. That's a better description than what I was saying. Thank you!
  22. Alex shielded her face with her hands as a gust of wind blew by. One hand covered the lily tucked behind her ear protectivelly. Figuring that it was a speedster running late, Alex shrugged and slipped into her room. She pulled the flower from her shirt to tuck it in with the daisys on her desk before noticing the small box. Alex looked through the contents, pulling out a worn pair of dice and a half melted stub of a crayon. To anyone else they'd look like a collection of childish junk but each toy had a hundred fond afternoon memories. Mike had always patiently listened to her reader's digest of the rules for any new game. Alex fingered the worn metal top hat (hers) and little dog (his) that had been pushed around a monopoly board who knows how many times. Carefully, Alex replaced the lid on the box of memories. She sniffled once or twice as she collected her homework before scrubbing one sleeve across her eyes to brush away any sentimental tears before she headed down to the quad.
  23. Alex blushed at him as he tucked the flower into her shirt before giving him a beaming smile, "Okay, I'll meet you for dinner then. It'll give me a chance to get some homework done." Probably an even mix of homework and daydreaming truth be told. Alex flashed a quick smile at him and then scampered off. Her usual schedule had her attending language lab before heading out to the tree on the quad to do homework.
  24. "Thank you," Alex said with a sweet smile as she accepted both the compliment and the box. She touched the faded marker on the top of the box, somewhat surprised on everything he had saved. Not only was Alex patient enough to let Mike get to things in his own time, there was a small part of her that wasn't going to make this any easier for him. She was only human after all. She lifted the box lid gently before lifting out the flower inside. Alex turned to him expectantly and held the flower out and asked him a question she rarely bothered with, "Will it look silly if I put it in my hair too?"
