So, we have done these before in the past but I thought I'd toss the idea out and see how much interest there was in current PCs. If I had Phantom host a gathering for Freedom City's arcane practitioners to get together, would there be any interest? Social thread to form the basis of having other contacts of folks dealing with supernatural threats and issues. May lead to adventure spin offs down the line but no combat planned for this thread, barring people arguing about best practices!

guide gab Freedom League lineup and role
alderwitch replied to Ari's topic in The Lighthouse: Catchphrase!
I'm not sure what you mean by this? I tossed out characters that I thought would fit and am familiar with but the entire point of clearing space is so that more PCs can be involved with the Freedom League. If things are shaken up then characters from Aux who make sense can move forward and there can be space for up and comers that also make sense for the league, which mostly means having an impeccable reputation in the super hero community and having a heavy batting weight, which is why I mentioned Phalanx and Edge. There are certainly people who are not 'my friends' who would also make just as much sense but I did use the names of characters I am most familiar with. I don't personally have characters that make sense for the FL and I'm not angling for any position on it. What I would like to see is a Freedom League where its an attainable goal for new characters to be a part of it during their play arc and for older characters who have wanted that role for a very long time to be able to achieve it. Velocity has been in the Aux for seven years now. -

If you're interested in becoming a guide, I'm pretty sure that its like refs and such; being available and helping out with threads and ideas and concepts. Feel free to take part here in the discussions, of course, and pitch in; thats what these forums and threads are for! Ari, in terms of the creation EC, I more meant that the arguments for it was the 'crowding' of FC, which I think is not helped by having a full line up of NPCs. I think, what Thevshi and I are trying to say, is that rather than try and flesh out the Freedom League with NPCs and create all their backgrounds, we'd be better served by letting PCs take over those spots. Like, for example, Magni was in the same Claremont years as Young Freedom 1.0 and Wander or Phalanx could easily take on the 'muscle' role of the League and have the advantage of being PCs. I don't think we need Freedom League NPCs for much of anything these days that a PC can't easily fill and, in some ways, makes it significantly easier since only a Ref can write for one of those NPCs. -

Here's my thoughts on the canonical characters and such. I don't really think that keeping the book NPCs in as important roles for the setting is all that important and I think there's a lot of good arguments against doing so. In opening Emerald City, and Bedlam, there have been a lot of talk of the space and settings feeling constrained and to be honest, I think some of that impression comes from having a full roster of roles filled with NPCs. A lot of the time it leads to having to hand wave why 'X' character is not involved in something they would be around for. The Freedom City setting is really designed as a tabletop setting where a GM will remove canonical characters if there's an overlap with an intended PC. We have eight years of play here and, honestly, characters like Fleur or Edge or Jack of All Blades have more gravitas because they have established their own roles. Being the leader of the Interceptors is a more interesting statement because the Interceptors have been active and engaged in events while Freedom League NPCs have not so much. Plus, it provides more reasons to have interactions. Rather than have a Ref have to run an NPC for this or that conversation; such as Eldritch, having an established mystic PC take on those duties means that its another player getting to take on the mentor role with new PCs instead. I don't think there's any NPC 'role' that we don't have many good PC contenders to take on. Anyway, I know that I'm probably in the minority on my feels on this subject. My two cents. -
Bombshell gave a casual, one shouldered shrug - even the gesture utterly unlike the posture and poise she generally presented as her public persona. "There's a great many ways to lie," she said simply, waiting for Terrifica to finish her mini-lecture. She finished her chai before setting the cup down. Once Terrifica seemed to pause she leaned forward towards Bonfire. "There are many, many different sorts of tricks to keeping someone's attention away from what you're doing with your hands. Unless you happen to be particularly dextrous, I suggest misdirection." She pointed out, her tone matter of fact. "People's attention is easily drawn. They'll look to movement naturally, so one of the oldest tricks is to knock something over with your non-dominant hand." Using the empty cup for her example, the thief brushed it casually with her arm sending it tipping. "Oh, excuse me. I'm so sorry, just nerves," she offered, clearly ad libbing for what role the man might take. When Talya sat back in her chair, the thumb drive was neatly stuck into the usb port on the back of Terrifica's laptop. "Like so. The trick is to keep your movements fluid and natural and if you fumble; if it won't be clean, bide your time. Rushing leads to sloppy mistakes, especially when doing a lift."

I did ask to be unconscious. Her teeth had left indents in the thick leather and she'd known, without needing to be told or see the look on his face that it was all going wrong. In her heart of hearts, Talya had both expected and dreaded something of the sort. It had been a long time ago - a lifetime, even for her - when she'd been a frightened child at her mother's bedside at her siblings birth. It had been a miracle that they'd all lived, really. Today, though, they didn't need a miracle - not really. Dimitri just had to save two lives. Talya would probably - probably - bounce back from death again. And if not, well, it wasn't as if the twins would lack for love and attention. Grimly, her pale features white and drawn, she'd let Dimitri dose her. Talya murmured no prayers, neither aloud nor in her thoughts. She had no trust in God. Instead, she put that faith entirely in the three people left to fight as the world fell away.

Nighthawk smiled for the first time as they reached the end of the simulation, holding out one wrapped hand for high fives. She didn't miss that Nevermore was upset, but she'd grown used to these sorts of sessions in the Doom Room. If they weren't going to get support from their erstwhile teacher, Nighthawk had taken to stepping in to fill that particular cheerleader role. This time, that job wasn't even hard. "Good job," she told her teammates. "Especially for working together for the first time. Next time, we'll do even better." The last was added with a downright defiant look towards the observer in the booth before she began to unwind the wrappings from her fists and fingers, "Wanna grab some lunch. We'll have extra time if he goes for stoney silence over lectures today."

Robin nodded slightly, her expression thoughtful and shuttered for a long moment. It wasn't a bad sort of quiet. She remained snuggled into Riley's side, her muscular legs drawn up comfortably. Riley was used to Robin's many silences by now. She worked her problems out internally, she always had. Finally, she nodded once, letting her hand fall on his thigh lightly, "Then we'll come up with some plans, do some recon - but later." Robin smiled then, her teeth flashing white and even against her dark skin. "Tonight's for other things."

So, I thought we could probably use a thread to throw out and discuss vignette ideas for upcoming months! Here's mine, and I'm tossing out a format that I thought might be helpful. Feel free to offer ideas on either format, or concept! Also, as a reminder, anyone is welcome to comment or suggest ideas. You don't have to have funny colored names to participate at all! Vignette Proposal Month: December, 2016 Event Tie In: Potentially! Concept: A blizzard (either mundane or not!), hits and hits hard. The vignette provides opportunities for characters to be snowed in together, caught in the weather, or just dealing with inclement weather. There's a potential for a concurrent thread dealing with the weather's source if its supernatural. I might even be willing to run that thread, especially if AD will give me back up on dealing with combat. (I hate running combat so much).

I have personally thought for a long time that it makes more sense for the Freedom League book characters to be the Aux. group and let the FL Aux take center stage. But that is probably a much larger conversation :D. Eldritch is still around but rarely shows up for things and has shunted a lot of the Master Magi spheres onto various PCs as well.

Yup, works for me.

Talya had opened her mouth to respond when Dimitri's exclamations in Russian forestalled what she might have said. "Mitya," she said, her tone conciliatory. She remained where she was standing at Erik's side, her Russian fluent and flawless. Reaching out one slender hand towards Comrade Frost, "We grew up in a different time. I haven't told anyone. Even with my reputation, even fully content with the particulars of my situation, can't you see that it isn't the easiest thing to bring up? Even my silver tongue can only do so much with, 'So, I'm pregnant and the father is married to someone else'." She waved one hand absently. Dimitri, after all, had been there for her transition from Natalya Browning, loyal officer in the army, to Bombshell, femme fatale. The articles had been salacious. Once, it had bothered her. "It isn't like that - of course it isn't like that - but still. I am happy about it - I am, truly - and I am sorry." Talya let her fingers find Erik's then, bringing his hand up so that he could feel the insistent outrage of one foot thumping against her ribs. "I'm fine - we're all fine. Angry, and apparently with a great future in football, perhaps, but fine." Talya replied reassuringly to them both, before adding to Erik, "And you are many things, my love, but rarely selfish. It's not exactly your fault that you happen to keep company more with those cursed with immortality, than not."

"I more meant that the first thought he jumped to was animal sacrifice," Ray explained as he went to stand up, scooping up his coffee cup in one hand and his claimed scone in the other. Nettling Ellis was all well and good, but he gestured to the door and more private environments since they wanted details. He glanced down at his wrist absently then, offering Carson a genuinely friendly smile at the compliment, "Thank you. I have photographs of clients with better pieces at the studio. Tattooing yourself is not the easiest thing to manage. Had to get some help for certain, ah, areas." He shouldered his way towards the door, holding it open for the other men. "There's always problems, but this one I thought might catch Ellis' attention." He hesitated, obviously weighing his words very carefully. "It's just a rumor, mind," he cautioned. It was clear that his earlier hassling of the shorter blonde doctor had been good nature'd as his voice had gentled. "And, remember, your nightmare creatures get miss-categorized all the time but there is rumour of a boogeyman getting set loose."

Robin had been staggered for a moment from the blow she'd intercepted. By the time she'd caught her breath and pivoted into the fray, the chaos had only multiplied. With a grimace, she realized that her options were minimal. While she could most likely out run Alkahest with the effort put into it, it would leave both her teammates and friends vulnerable, and it would risk Alkahest turning on someone less able to take the damage. Fred wasn't going to be any happier, really, if she pulped Robin into the wall but it would take significantly longer than it would with just about anyone else in the room. "You assholes!" Robin shouted at them even as she threw herself at Alkahests neck in an effort to tangle up the raging form of her roommate. "She's not a weapon to be used!" Robin would have sworn more; after all, if she'd had the breath to draw. If someone could command the Alkahest, they could calm her down rather than ratcheting up the damage factor. Robin's breath whooshed out as one long, muscled arm grabbed her torso tight enough to hurt. "Idiots," Robin hissed through her teeth.

Bombshell might have seemed an odd presence at Steve's side, immaculate in the silver and grey that she'd taken to wearing since joining the Interceptors; her jacket casually slung over the back of the chair. With her long legs crossed and her casual posture, she might as well have been utterly oblivious to the razor wire tight tensions in the room. As her blue eyed gaze flicked to the screen, her expression remained undisturbed although she watched carefully. Talya had fought in both of the invasions that had occurred in this dimension; she'd lost friends and colleagues in both. "No one's going in alone to a dimension teetering on the brink of oblivion," she said, the words dry. "I rather suspect that the first step here is to garner information to see if an expedition is even necessary. They didn't summon any of the dimensional experts. They summoned the two people in Freedom City who understand the Terminus from a point of view that no one else shares." The ex-spy turned her attention, pointedly, to Daedelus then,"I mean, I'm all for theatrics, of course, but what information is that you hope to glean?"- 51 replies

"Do you think Huang's boyfriend knows the DJ?" Robin asked Riley, laughing a little as she applauded the end of the set. She'd only seen Set in passing but was well aware that the god-teen was quite popular on social media and it seemed unlikely that an Egyptian themed act missed his radar. She leaned into Riley's shoulder once again, adding, "I wonder if they're here tonight." She didn't bother looking around though. if other kids they knew were at the event, Robin had no real desire to go catch up with their friends tonight. It was a date night, after all! As the acts switched, Robin shifted slightly against Riley and offered, in a tone awfully conversational for discussing breaking and entering, "So... I've been thinking. Do you think we could get into the records for the police precinct in the Fens?" Robin wasn't entirely sure what was all involved in that. It seemed like there would be computer records, certainly, but also perhaps paperwork and certainly evidence was kept somewhere. "Just, you know, would it even be possible?"

Ray paused for a moment at that, squinting at Carson like he was trying to make his eyes focus. With a grunt and a small shake of his head, Ray had to remind himself that he was largely confined to human senses; at least until he wanted to add to his collection. "You only keep the Horse if you keep the job," Ray said, more dryly than usual after his pronounced help. Absently, he patted Ellis at the man's palpable concern. "Oh, I can be shunted around dimensionally speaking, it just won't stick. Considerable power you might have access to, no doubt, but not enough to see me home for good. And I should say they're not common, they're quite custom." If that bothered Ray, which on some days it did manage to do so, he covered it with a bite of Ellis's food again before he added, "Your arcane knowledge is appalling," to Ellis, conversationally, "How you manage is an utter mystery and yet, despite that, I show up to offer you leads on possible problems anyways." Ray cocked his head to one side as if considering for a moment. "I might not actually be a very good friend."

Do you want any rolls or anything for Sofia setting off alarms?

Nighthawk would thank Woodsman for having her back, but later, when there were no more foes to deal with. She turned and pivoted, trusting her companions to fill their roles even as she focused on the gunslinger. Once more her fist snapped out, the hard flat of her palm now catching the gunsling in the side of his cheek, drilling him in the sensitive nerve cluster that she'd trained to strike unerringly. With no more then a hissed gasp, the man dropped at Nighthawk's booted feet. Her battle was a silent one compared to the explosions of the symbiote's armor but no less effective in its efforts.

"Well, if you fall off, you just get back on again," Leilani offered the reassurance as she guided the Grue towards the waters. A kinetic sort of creature, Leilani demonstrated more than explained but she was actually good at providing the instruction in how to set the board into the waves and paddle out towards the surf that Kimo was providing. Sitting astride her board, her legs in the water, Leilani bobbed up and down in the swells as she gestured towards the surf as it rolled in. "So, watchu wanna do... is you gonna paddle out towards the waves and then, turn the board 'round. When there's a good wave, you paddle into the wave and pop up when it starts to go, yeah? Lemme catch a little one, an' I'll show you." Leilani leaned forward on her board until she was laying flat on her stomach. Paddling out with quick, sharp strokes, she turned the board around and caught the first wave back that seemed decent. Pressing up with her hands, she rose up quickly as the wave rose, a whoop of pure glee as slight shifting of her feet drove the board along the wave. Calling out as she passed Daphne, "Is okay if you gotta get up one foot at a time too. Whatever feels right at first is where to start!" Of course, most people started by practicing padding on sand but Leilani had never been the most patient of creatures.

Bombshell joined Terrifica at the table, sliding in with a casual slouch that was nothing like the polished British woman. With her legs casually crossed at the ankles and wearing a hoodie and jeans, Bombshell could have been any young college kid enjoying a coffee with a friend. There was nothing overt that had changed about the blonde spy, save her clothing and makeup pallet choices but somehow the blonde looked nothing at all like the famous ex-spy. She clocked in at easily a decade younger, and from her ponytail to her sneakers, she blended easily into the fabric of the coffee shop. Which, really, was the point. "I like the hair," Bombshell commented, her normally crisp diction smoothed out into the flatter cadence of an American.
