Brave Enough to Burn [IC] (Open to FL Auxiliary Members)
alderwitch replied to alderwitch's topic in Americas
"Uh, well," she said as she turned her head to take in the very odd surroundings that she found herself in. The date question she didn't find terribly odd as it was like asking a person how many numbers they were holding up or the like. Leilani was pretty sure that she hadn't concussed herself but, then, she didn't think drowning in a storm would lead to being made of fire and rock either. "It's November... November eleventh," she provided in answer to Frost's question as he replied, "Nineteen-sixty-two." Right during the cuban missile crisis which might explain her earlier panic about Frost's presence. She turned towards him as if to ask why on earth communists and the Freedom League were working together only to have her attention drawn by the more pressing matter. "But... but I'm not on fire?" She asked, the distress in realizing that she wasn't 'cured' palpable in her words.- 48 replies

Leilani stirred, turning on the grass in the way any normal sleeper might wake up, scrunching her eyes against the light and turning on her side. As she woke, for a moment Leilani thought she'd had a terrible string of nightmares - the storm, the drowning, the fire. But when she twisted her head, grass tickled her cheek and she cracked open her eyelids to take in the knot of super-heroes and the oddly pastoral setting beyond them. "Not a dream, 'den?" She asked, as she levered herself up onto her palms and only then took note that she wasn't on fire still. That alone was significant comfort. "Did... did you fix me?" She wanted to know as Leilani levered herself first into a sitting position and then went to rise to her bare feet.- 48 replies

"Hmm," Ray said as he thought for a moment and then pulled over a sketchpad to begin scribing lines into it. He roughed in the lines of the opening as he nodded towards the walls, "Any artist with a damn is going to be able to put together something without an exact picture and its okay if it takes a few tries to get something you like before you want to put it on your skin. A tattoo is something you're going to want to have for a life time." Ray glanced down at his own decorated wrist and the swirls of color there as he added, "Well, for most people." He pushed a sketch of window frame towards Jessie - a traditional window with its panes thrown open but the view left blank, "Want to jot down an idea of what you want to see out your window?" He invited, "Rough is fine. I think you might like a softer style for that. Have you seen watercolor tattoos?" He asked as he pulled out a book from underneath the counter and flipped it open to pictures taken of other tattoos he'd done, specifically those in the style he mentioned.

"No, of course not. You're here to observe. I wouldn't expect you to throw yourself into the fray," Phantom agreed sensibly as if chaos wasn't erupting around them all. Fred would notice though as her mentor-for-day turned translucent and ephemeral as Phantom relaxed into her natural state of having one foot in the Void. "Hmm. That's not Lemurian," she commented about the large Deep One's insistent croaking. "I'll take the big one," she volunteered, as she rather doubted any of the creatures were going to leave willingly she looked down at Fred, "Let us know if you need anything more to process your sample." Offering that advice, the cloaked guardian took to the skies once more to pursue the large 'Deep One'.

"Mary. My mother's name is..." Leilani blinked once, shaking her head slowly back and forth. Feeling sleepy made no sense but it was all of a sudden near impossible to keep her eyes open. She staggered once before collapsing like a puppet with their strings cut. The change back to flesh was sudden and abrupt, with the obsidian plates cracking and falling away from the woman as she dropped from living flame to a human body's warmth in temperature the moment her eyes fell shut. She never had time to answer Gaian Knight's other question. When no longer rock and flame, the woman was clearly somewhere in her mid to late twenties. Her dark hair was cut blunt and short to her jawline and wore an anachronistic beaver-tail wetsuit with the swirling psychedelic patterns that were so popular in the 1960s.- 48 replies

"I got no idea," Leilani avowed, the accent to her words thicker perhaps with stress but also more apparent now that they recognized the young woman as being local rather than from more exotic environments. She let her hand fall in then, hugging herself tightly as if she could somehow retract the heat of her body into her skin. For those with the ability to sense such fluctuations, the temperature DID drop at her gesture although the volcanic woman remained too hot to touch, the ambient temperature began to drop as her powers reacted to the woman's desires. "But, sure, seems likely okay. I don't think... I don't think I'm tapping into any vents or anything?" Her tone was doubtful, uncertain and she stayed where she was, trusting the League - even if these Leaguers were largely strangers to her - to see to people's safety. "I was out surfing and the storm was coming in..." She gestured towards the waves, dutifully answered Fleur's question and realized that the sky had grown clear and dark since that time. Her rocky-face crinkled with concern, "Oh, no, it's night already? My poor momma. She gon' be so worried."- 48 replies

Leilani had been staring at her hands, flexing them to watch the rock like skin crack to reveal the lava below in fascinated horror. It looked like it should be hurting but she didn't feel anything. Was it shock? She hadn't a clue. Leilani glanced up as Frost's hand extended into her vision and she reached out automatically for the promise of safety and security that it offered only to flinch away at Gaian Knight's voice. "I don't want to hurt you! I don't want to hurt anyone!" Leilani said, clenching her hands into fists. Gaian Knight was well able to contain her fledgling powers but his senses would feel the lurch of the earth below in attempt to respond to the Hawiian's distress. Leilani for her part, was well aware of just how dangerous the volcanos were when they burned. Looking down at her clenched fists, did she even really want to live if she was a risk to everyone and everything around her. She thrust out her hand then to take what Frost offered almost defiantly. He sounded confident and she knew he was strong. She'd seen the television clips, after all. Her chin tipped up, "It's fine," she said, firmly, the fatalism clear even in her altered voice. Maybe that would be better really. How much could cracking apart hurt? For how long? "It'll be safer for everyone else right?" She asked as she reached out a hand that burned, literally, for Frost's.- 48 replies

Their crazed magma creature - woman - was confused but Fleur was just so easy to trust. It paused, even the earth halting in its shaking as she cocked her head at Fleur. A small frown flickered across her features as she started to get her bearings. "Leilani.... Leilani Ali'i. Where else would I be?" She said and then added, "Did you save me from drowning?" She looked down then, noticing for the first time the rock and lava that snaked up her arms and legs - and more that she couldn't see. "-My hands?? WHAT HAPPENED TO ME?"- 48 replies

The chill from Frost hitting the air was enough to finish whatever fell transformation had begun. The creature's 'skin' turned solid and glossy black, its features taking on an angular almost feminine cast. It - SHE - blinked those obsidian lids once at the hand that waved towards the beach. "AUGH!" The lava monster said, its eyes going wide and round and then, almost absurdly, but at least in a gravelly version of English, "The commies are attacking!" She pinwheeled her arms, and the ground reacted to her palpable distress with a rumble that shook the sand under her feet. This, naturally, distressed those that had gathered to rubberneck although the Sandman's barrier kept them well back from the little bursts of flame.- 48 replies

With the powers that the League had at their respective disposal, traveling halfway across the globe was trivial. They emerged not far from the disturbance. Local police had cordoned off the area swiftly but there were the assembled press of humanity one expected with a spectacle. Especially when that spectacle happened in an area rife with tourists and their cameras. Vegetation spat them out right at the line where greenery gave way to sand. It was towards the edge of the lovely beach and it was easy to see its location beyond the press of humanity as whatever was burning did so brightly enough to push back the night time shadows. Past the cordoned off area and the frankly on edge cops was the area where sand had begun to fuse to glass and beyond where it was still molten. At the center of the burning stretch of beach was a gash carved in the sand although close examination would make it clear that there was no crevasse below it... for it was at least humanoid in nature as another almost-groan rattled out of what could have been a chest and the figure dragged itself up to first four limbs before staggering up to two. As it moved, and air brushed over the surface of its limbs, the burning bright molten rock began to coalesce into the shiny black of obsidian plates. "Mrrghhaaaah....!" It managed, lifting its arms up, "....mrrh?!" There were shrieks then as it began to stagger forward - and flashes from cameras, "...Augh!?" The creature roared, sounding both annoyed... and maybe a little frightened? It was harder to tell when the voice was distinctly non-human.- 48 replies

"There's the cavalry, looks like," Phantom said as she caught sight of Glamazon heading towards the fray. Floating over, out of reach of any tongues dashing out, Phantom appeared above the heroes heading towards the park and the invading Deep Ones. Fred was deposited gently on the ground with Phantom floating down after her erstwhile student. Raising her voice, she offered the information that she had to the heroes, pitching her booming tone so Glamazon might hear it as she headed close to the line of defense but wasn't about to try and stop the Atlantean in her course. "They're singing about a 'Chosen One' from the sky and the raising of Dagon." Phantom explained without so much as a proper introduction. Introductions could really wait. "Their tongues - or some secretions - appear to be engendering madness in the human population." She paused, glancing towards Fred before adding, "They have their young with them. It appears we need to address the raving humans, separate the two species until an accord can be reached. Suggestions?"

"All the reason to get me outta here tomorrow," Robin was just rasping another 'chuckle' - a dreadful noise through the hiss of the plastic mask covering her face - when the other two walked in. On the bed, Robin brightened at the appearance of their friends and went to struggle up higher on the pillows. She was healing quickly without a doubt but there were still dressings over the rapidly healing burns on the front of her chest and more wrapping around her arms and back. Most telling, though, was the way her arms trembled from the effort of lifting herself up. Robin managed it, though, scooting up on the bed so she wasn't prone even when the various machines beeped their protest. "Thank you," Robin told them as they arrived, her hand still on Riley's, "C'mon in. All the tv and jello you could want here."

Without any fanfare, their Talya stepped out from the shadows where she'd vanished to, right behind her own doppelgänger. When Talya appeared, she was already mid twist - those lethal batons snapping out to crack the spokesman right in the back of the skull. "I hope one of you is taking notes. I never give the speeches, for one," Talya's voice was crisp and amused, "My job was to hit from behind. Also, I never say 'bloody'. It doesn't fit with the upper class image I projected. Now, do try to keep up." Despite her banter, Talya watched the way that her doppelgänger reacted - how she moved - and shot a meaningful look to the other veterans. Tactics, aside, the faux-Bombshell replicated the original's training uncannily in her responses.

Phantom was no where near as good as her spouse at keeping a poker face, but that was why she wore the cowl and mask largely. "We are very good at finding people." Her words were mild yet somehow menacing although that was not aimed at Nicola. She shifted then, her tattered cloak shifting and finally parting before she reached out one gloved hand to give Jack's hand a light pat, as if she were intending to soothe him. It was an oddly domestic gesture for the scene and setting, "More to the point, this is Freedom City and you might not know the history here, but Jack's fought very hard to ensure that life here... you can define what you want to be. Who you want to be."

Date: April 1, 2016 Location: Hilo, Hawaii It being April 1st, the early reports of 'nightmare creatures disgorged from the seabed' were assumed to be prank calls especially since these particular calls came from a less populous corner. It was only when the wedding party showed up for their sunset pictures that the panic truly started. While most of the white sand remained lovely and pristine, close to the water's edge it began to blacken, smoldering in the heat. At first glance it seemed that an odd fissure had opened up in the beach, disgorging lava from some previously unknown magma tunnel - boiling the water that touched the edges of the disturbance and sending plumes of smoke into the air. It was only when the lava groaned and then rolled over that true hysteria set in. Across the country, the Freedom League's headquarters lit up with alarms and reports of monsters and nightmares and living lava from panicked officials that were not sure exactly what governmental service one called for that sort of thing. Thankfully, there was always the Freedom League standing ready. Of course as the panic was happening in the late evening in Hawaii, the League got the alerts a little before 4AM by Freedom City's clock. A hero's work was never done!

Fixed the Environmental Control down to 6 and added Burst to the Earthquake power. Changed Aura down to Sustained.

Alright, I guess I'll have to shelf Renegade instead of Phantom to bring her in, then? I've moved the skill point back to the skill below it as that was where it was originally before I messed up my maths. The fire immunity is for fire-damage, yes in addition to the heat immunity for the environmental condition. I've adjusted the damage aura to increase the duration and lowered the type. Its more about the effect than trying to hit caps with that one per say. Just representing being on fire

Ray looked alarmed as Aquaria began to crouch, briefly concerned he was about to be serenaded once more. "Not exactly, but I get the general gist of it," Ray said with a sideways sort of smile. "I'm glad it brings you the peace you were looking for." For a moment, it looked like he might pat her shoulder but as she was kneeling, that would have left him awkwardly patting her head. Instead, he continued the motion to reach for a towel and begin removing the latex gloves he'd been wearing. At Jessie's question, he glanced up, "I wouldn't say anybody as I imagine eventually I'll get some stone golem walking in the door expecting me to do some chiseling but, by and large, yes. It takes a bit of extra preparation but I've acquired a certain reputation among the more unusual inhabitants of Freedom City for that sort of work. Sometimes it takes more sittings and an impervium needle or other forethought but I've done demigods before so..." He gave a little gesture of his hand as if to indicate the sky was the limit. Tossing the towel down after he'd wiped the latex powder from his hands, he added with a surprisingly gentle tone of voice, "Have something in mind?"

Robin had recovered quickly, unfortunately not quickly enough to avoid her hospital stay, but still fast enough that she was off to meet with the psychiatrist - psychologist - whatever. Without her leather jacket, Robin's hunched in posture was much clearer as was the chiseled musculature of her arms and back through the worn thin shirt she wore. It was oversized, as most of Robin's clothes were, and certainly had seen better days. After the Goodman Building incident, her wardrobe was significantly diminished as the entire outfit had been destroyed. And irradiated. Her expression stoney, she dutifully shouldered into the building and headed for the elevator, following the headmistresses instructions. She was prompt in arriving outside of the doctor's door, her hand jammed deeply into the pockets of her jeans and her shoulders tense. Her body was coiled, tight and uncomfortable with her surroundings.

"If we let him get shot, someone is donating blood or body-heat and it can't be me at the moment," Talya replied to Erik absently with a slight gesture towards her midsection. In a crisis, Talya was mostly sure that her body's ability to replenish itself would extend towards the pregnancy but it wasn't exactly something she was eager to test. At the morose expression, she bit back a sigh, "He was blown up again, wasn't he?" Talya asked with less concern than a friend ought to probably have. Throwing up her hands, she offered, "If you don't currently have a body, then he's probably off running around somewhere. Ace Danger doesn't stay dead." There was no doubt in her tone. Talya, however, did not verify that they were friends. If Ace had already gotten himself blown up, or otherwise impaled, she wasn't overly eager to end up with whatever job might remain in the revolution.

"No, no, my fine lads," Talya said smoothly as she stepped out from behind Comrade Frost, offering her most disarmingly sweet smile. "We don't mean to be interrupting your... whatever celebration that might be. You see, we're just looking for Ace Danger? Tall, blonde chap - nice smile, good teeth. Tends to catchphrase his way into troublesome situations?" It was a calculated gamble as even-odds that Ace wasn't actually on their side in whatever the recent troubles might have been but Talya had always been willing to play the odds. Especially when her odds involved one Comrade in frowning-about-the-revolution mode and a certain Espadas when he was willing to get his over-protective on. Talya smiled once more showing very even white teeth. "We're on an errand from his family, you see."
