Erin laughed, spinning her bat back into its compacted form. "That's usually what I have to say," she pointed out. "But we took him down clean, and fast." She looked up to the invisible window where Archer could watch the simulation, if he chose. "I guess either he's not there, or he's not coming down today. He hates it when we beat his toys easier than he wants," she explained to Alex. "That was really good for your first run through the simulator."

  3. Erin lifted her hand automatically to catch, pulling down a handful of keys. She looked at them quizzically for a moment. She recognized James' keys, including the all-important keys to the Chevette, but why give them to her? She glanced up to ask him about it, but he was already gone, as he'd doubtless intended to be. James was good at the dramatic exit when he wanted to be, and really, she wasn't sure she wanted to ask any questions right now. Clutching the keys in her hand, she checked the clock. After 5am, past curfew hours, but before Alex was going to be awake... oh well! With a bounce in her step, Erin hurried outside to try out the car, all by herself. Everything else could wait.

Maybe the helmet is shielded, Erin figured, trying to project her thoughts without saying them aloud. Or maybe it's because I hurt him that time. I'll try to get the hat off first. You stay there! she reiterated with all the mental firmness she could muster. Dodging the pole once again, she darted around behind the behemoth and leapt onto his back, slamming the end of her bat under the join of his helmet, then doing her best to lever it up and off in one clean motion.
  5. Erin's going to attempt to disarm him of the helmet this round. She's making a power attack again, this time a full-out one at +5. That drops her attack to +5, raises her damage to +17 with the bat, and leaves her defense at +10. She attacks with the bat, and amazingly, succeeds with a 19! Roll to disarm is 1d20+17, first roll is pathetic! I spend an HP, taking her back down to 2 again. Second roll is (thanks to the HP) just fine, a 33.
  6. "No, it's okay, I have a key," Erin replied, setting down the bag of candy and fishing James' keyring out of her pocket. "I just didn't want to bother him if he, you know, had company or was sleeping or something." All the dorm keys looked the same, so it wasn't hard to figure out which was the correct one. She put it in the slot and opened the door quietly. "James?" she called, just to be sure. "You in here?"
  7. Since she had Alex's attention, Erin turned off her phone, speaking instead to the empty hallway. "I don't know, really, it's probably nothing, but I'm kind of worried about James. He was acting kind of strange yesterday, like he was worried, but he didn't want to talk about it. Can you tell if he's in his room?"
  8. Erin almost left it go at that, figuring he'd be in later, or maybe tomorrow. But something about the way he'd looked and acted last night niggled at her, something wrong she couldn't quite put her finger on. Despite all her training this summer, Erin wasn't one to ignore her instincts. Pulling the little beacon communicator she'd gotten from Alex's grandpa out of her pocket, she tentatively told it to call Alex. It had worked when she'd tested it, but she still wasn't entirely sure. "Alex?" she asked, when she thought she had a good connection. "Are you busy?"
  9. This is the thread where Erin goes looking for James on Halloween Night
  10. Halloween Night Erin looked out the window of her dorm room as the sky outside grew steadily darker, casting the lights of the city into sharp relief. From this side of the building, she wasn't going to see any Trick-or-Treaters, since her room faced the campus, but she could see the occasional student dressed in a costume and hurrying towards the main building for the party. She'd wondered if anyone would go in their practice uniform or hero costume, just to be a smartass, but so far she hadn't seen anyone sporting the blue and gold. It was going to be a cold night tonight, from the weather reports. Anyone going out for candy had better be dressed warmly. Turning away from the window, she went over to her bunk and sat down, picking up her bag of candy. She'd conscientiously poured half the mini candy bars into her emergency stash under the bed, but that left quite a bit of chocolate to be eaten. If she could get sick at all, she could get herself halfway there on candy without knocking on a single door, she reflected as she unwrapped and ate a Mr. Goodbar. But it was boring to do it that way. She was, in fact, entirely bored, and perilously close to getting lonely and feeling sorry for herself. If she let that happen, it would be hard to stop feeling that way. If it were any other night, she'd go and take the Chevette for another spin. That had been more than entertaining. Thinking about the car made her think about James, and his personal business. Why had he given her the keys, anyway? Was it just to cheer her up? She wouldn't put that past him, he was pretty sneaky. Or could he have been really worried about whatever business he was going on tonight? Whatever it was, he should be back by now, surely. Or maybe he hadn't left yet, if it was family business. Either way, it might be a good idea to talk to him again, and it would get her out of her room. Pocketing the car keys and rolling the bag of candy to take with her, Erin headed downstairs to James' room, keeping an eye out for nosy RAs. Surely they'd all be at the party by now.

Erin saw the pole coming and moved quickly, using her bat to lever herself up and out of the way of the swing. She jumped onto the telephone pole as he swung it, balancing precariously there for a moment before bringing the bat up into his face again. That was some tough armor, it didn't even look like she'd dented it last time. But he was definitely distracted! How many seconds had it been, five, ten? She didn't dare turn her head to look at the civilians around them as she dropped from the swinging pole.
  12. Erin's going to use her move action for an Acrobatic Bluff against Thrasher, hoping to catch him flat-footed. She has Skill Mastery and an Acrobatics modifier of +10, so with the -5 penalty for move action, that's a DC 15 for him. For her standard action, she'll do another +3 power attack, which puts her attack at +7, damage at +15, and Defense at +10. Attack roll is a 17. DC 30 again for toughness.
  13. DC on that is 30, between the bat and the power attack. Erin's initiative is 16.
  14. Stesha exchanged a few more emails with him, ensuring that she would have free admission for herself and a couple of friends, and that she'd have a place to change if she wanted to. That wasn't much of a problem, since she could zip home and back whenever she liked, but still. She assured the nice young man that she would bring her own plants, he should just provide some moist dirt. With all the details taken care of, she got back with Taylor and Derrick to tell them dates and times, and it was all set!

"Ten or fifteen seconds," Erin nodded. "I can do that. Here we go." She hopped up onto the ledge of the roof, measured the drop, then pushed off, pointing her feet down towards the ground and readying her bat. Her angle took her directly and silently towards her opponent, still wielding his telephone pole at the populace. Before she even landed, she used the momentum of her jump to drive the swing of her bat, right into the least protected area on her opponent, his face.
  16. Erin is attempting a diving charge, and power attacking for 3. This puts her at a +9 to attack, +15 to damage (with the bat) and +8 to defense. First roll is awful, spending an HP, taking her down to 2 left. Second roll is much better, a 27.

"Do you think it's a glitch, or something designed to keep you out?" Erin asked, not taking her eyes off the scene. None of the civilians seemed to be in instant danger, as a mailbox was taking the brunt of his wrath right now, but it probably wouldn't be long before he got bored of that. "Maybe they just don't want you blasting him from a distance. I can jump down there," she suggested, "take him on, while you get the civilians moving. If you're in their heads, they'll probably do what you say and get out of the way. If he's too strong, we can make other plans then."
  20. I'm trying to model a Move Objects using plants effect that is capable of disarming opponents. I've gotten conflicting opinions on whether/what extras I would need to make this work without incurring a penalty for range. Do I need an improved disarm extra, or is disarming an integral part of what the power allows you to do anyway?

  22. "I learned how to work the controller," she smirked back. "Now there's no stopping me. Besides, you have a social life, you don't need video games." She stood and stretched as well, shutting down the game system. "Speaking of, maybe tomorrow night if your personal stuff wraps early enough and you don't feel like going to the party, you could stop by and we could hang out. None of the RAs are going to be upstairs anyway, probably. Dr. Marquez gave me a bag of little candy bars to make up for having to stay in." She rolled her eyes. "I wasn't going to tell him no."
  23. "I was giving you the benefit of the doubt," Erin teased, watching him take his turn at the puzzle. "But I guess you really don't have to worry about finding a job anywhere, not if you know every language. You could be an interpreter anywhere, even if that was the only power you had..." She chuckled at herself. "Not that you need to worry about a job anyway. But does that mean that hell is the same for everyone, no matter where they come from?" she asked. "Or do you know?"
  24. "You have to pick up the little green balls and get them to stick to the wall," Erin pointed out helpfully, "and keep spreading them out so they climb the wall." She demonstrated, neatly maneuvering the controller to get the little balls where she wanted them. "I didn't know you could read Latin. Where do they teach that anymore? Back at my old school it was Spanish or French and that was about it. Are you reading old religious books or something?" When neither of them were looking at each other, the eye-contactless conversation was less awkward.

"All right," Erin muttered, a little dubiously. "Just make sure to keep behind some cover as well. Archer knows how strong your forcefield is too, you don't want this guy to try and test it." She slowed to a halt as they reached the area they'd been heading for. The noises from down below suggested that their quarry hadn't moved, but she leaned over the roof to get a visual assessment of the situation. "Wait to land till I jump him, he'll be distracted then. Or you could stay on the roof," she suggested, "and divert the civilians from up here."
