  1. With the small robots dispatched, Wander turned her attentions to the giant robot still attacking them. Phalanx had done considerable damage to the thing already, but it was obviously still game. Leaping into the air, she landed in a crouch on the thing's giant shoulders and gave the metal head a solid blow from behind. It rang like a bell, sending the monster wavering, but he wasn't out yet. His head was a lot more wobbly on his shoulders, though, so this time Wander wrapped her arms around the giant metal cranium, sticking her hands in its ears, and ripped the head clean off its neck. "Look out!" she called to her teammates below.
  2. Erin does a full power-attack against the giant robot! Her roll only kind of sucks! She's also spending a hero point to surge, same attack. That roll is even more pathetic, but now IC is doing a server error, so you'll have to take my word that it was a nat 1. Edge is spending another hero point though, so she'll hit.
  3. Stesha pursed her lips, looking a little skeptical of that idea. "Not that it's a bad idea in general, but I'd really rather not go shopping with him," she told Ace. "Being over and done with him is one thing, but I don't really want to spend any more time with him than I have to. Maybe he can start doing the three-piece suit heroing now that he's wealthy. It's kind of weird, though," she admitted. "What would he be doing taking over companies?"
  4. Erin thought about that for a minute. "Better not," she finally advised, "until you know how to do it the regular way. Mr. Summers might get kind of nervous if you talk about driving just like in a video game." She deftly snagged the front passenger seat as they arrived at the car, leaving Alex and her short legs to the backseat. "Maybe we could get a panel truck," she suggested, "and that way everyone who's bringing their costumes along everywhere will have someplace to change."
  5. Stesha blinked and regrouped, obviously surprised by the realization that Ace didn't know as much as she'd thought about this one particular matter. "Well, yeah," she said hesitantly, then paused. She wasn't sure what the etiquette was on hero-to-hero discussion of who was behind a given mask, but Ace was her friend, and he was trustworthy. Besides, it wasn't as though Jack had given her any special reason to keep his secrets for him. "That's Jack, when he's in costume. I guess maybe he couldn't afford anything better. I don't know what he actually does for a living."
  6. "Maybe," Erin replied, "but the more of our team you put into any activity, the more likely things are to end up going weird. We might be better off starting small. I did train with Mark without blowing up the simulator, so I know he can do it, but I don't know what those powers would do in a baseball game. Chris's suction cup hands might come in handy, though. No glove needed. And it would probably be more interesting, eventually, to do a group training project that wasn't just beating on pretend bad guys. If you get the adrenaline rush, you start making mistakes, and if you don't, it's just boring." She started in on a ripe pear, navigating it carefully so as not to make a mess. "Are you going to go off with your family for the long weekend on Labor Day?" she asked. "I know some of the locals are."
  7. Erin heaved a sigh at James' meanness, popping up from the seat she'd just taken . "Here we've fought side by side with you, and I've pulverized you in Mario Kart, and you still have such little faith," she scolded James, then finally allowed, "but it's probably a good idea to try a couple of different things anyway. I haven't driven a truck, but I'm sure it's the same idea, just done bigger. And we'll get you a pillow," she assured Alex with a little snicker.
  8. "If a tacky costume were the worst of his sins, I could forgive him that," Stesha replied wryly. "It's all the rest of it. But hey, in the past, right? It does make a potent argument for getting a better costume than that," she admitted. "And I think I'd just look silly in a hockey mask, frankly. Do you wear a costume when you're working. I mean, you always had that same outfit in the cartoon show, but that's how all cartoons work. Not that you wouldn't look good in pretty much any costume, but I can't see you really wearing the spandex and cape getup."
  9. "I'll take a look next time I'm down there," she told him, "see if they've got simulations that aren't for fighting. Or next time I've got someone pinned, I'll ask if they want to play baseball instead." Erin chuckled dryly. "It's a good time to convince anyone that we should do something else, right? I'd say we should invite Alex, but even a softball thrown by someone with our strength could probably take her head off if she doesn't duck."
  10. "Well, it shouldn't really need to stop bullets, Stesha equivocated, "but other things. Little meteorites, ultra-high speed travel, getting a little too close to a star, you know? Something bulletproof would probably work, but it's not like anyone's going to be shooting at the books or anything," she assured him, as though that made the request entirely normal.
  11. With Phalanx attracting the giant robot's attention, Wander set out to clear the field a little. Mark's idea was all well and good, unless they were picked to death by the smaller robots while trying to fight the bigger one. It seemed wise to even the odds a little, and she was at her best in dozen-on-one combat anyway. "Help Phalanx," she told Geckoman, then waded into the mass of smaller robots that surrounded them. It wasn't a pretty sight. Oil and gears flew and the screech of rending metal filled the air as Wander punched, kicked, and tore her way through the metal battle lines.
  12. Erin attacks the little robots en masse, since we're using mass combat rules. She makes a full Power Attack, but doesn't go all out for once because hey, spit and you'll hit a robot. ;-) Or not. Spending a hero point... well, the roll was still pathetic, but comes out to 18.
  13. "Anything that's been manipulated on the molecular level is probably a little bit out of my price range for the moment," Stesha admitted with a smile. The mention of consultations and custom work had already made her adjust the likely cost of these outfits sharply upwards in her head, but she supposed it really wasn't easy to get hero costumes off the rack when it wasn't Halloween. "But it'll be something to keep in mind for when I'm a rich and famous florist. Simple and durable is more my style."
  14. Erin tilted her head, thinking about that. "You mean like setting up a simulation to play softball or something like that? I don't know if you could do that or not. I haven't really tried. If it's not already programmed in, we'd have to find someone who's a good programmer or something. The simulations aren't very flexible, most of the time. If they're good guys, they fight with you, if they're bad, they fight you. But I've never asked it to play games, so who knows?" She looked across the table at him. "Might be fun to play against a whole team with super speed and strength. If it can, would you play too?"
  15. "Yes, there is one more thing," Stesha told him, "but it's sort of a long shot. I thought that if any place might have it, an establishment like this would be the best place to look. A very good friend of mine has been having some problems with his books not being sturdy enough for his traveling. They can get damaged easily in travel, and it's a problem. I was wondering if you might have anything in the way of a really, really strong book jacket, like maybe reinforced steel, or Kevlar. Nothing that can catch fire, you know, but strong enough to resist a lot of impact."
  16. "I hope that's not going to be for a long time," Stesha said fervently. "They're surely not going to put him back into an institution, now that he's escaped once. Maybe by the time he gets out of jail he'll be back on his medications or whatever. " The thing with the Beekeeper hadn't make much of a splash in the newspapers, but she supposed someone who knew her secret identity would need to do no more than a Google search. "Trouble is, he probably knows where I live now, even if he hasn't put the two together. If he gets out, I think I'm going to have to move." She shook her head. "But having a costume would be nice anyway. And shopping with friends is fun."
  17. "Excellent idea," Erin agreed right away. "We won't be able to make a good choice without having anything to base it off of. It's been more than a year since I gave up my car. Mario Kart's not quite the same. But if we drive your car, we'll be better prepared." She wasn't as good at trying to convince people of things as Alex, and could hardly keep from laughing as she made her pitch, but it was sincere enough.
  18. "Yeah, there's a schedule up for when it's being used for classes, and then people can sign up for training the rest of the time," Erin told him, after making short work of the rest of her cookie. "It'll probably be busier with classes starting again, but only people on an actual training team get to sign up whenever they want, so probably not too bad, unless Next Gen are really compulsive. You going to start getting down there for training? It really is better without Archer there."
  19. Erin shook her head. "Archer still won't clear me for it," she replied glumly. "Nothing except solo exercise and group powers training. Maybe he's right, but it still blows. I've watched some of the games they do around here, it's kinda cool how people make up for not being the strongest or fastest. A lot of times it bends the rules a little, but whatever." She shrugged. "It's the spirit of the game that counts. Sometimes I think it might be nice to get some exercise that isn't just doing it by yourself or working together to try and beat something up." With a quick grin, she added, "And I'd probably be a lot better first baseman than I used to be. If there's any place people like us are ever going to be able to compete, it's got to be someplace like this."
  20. Yeah, yeah, yeah, just close it this time. ;-)
  21. Preempted by later/earlier timeline shenanigans with Darian and Erin. You can close it.
  22. This one's done, wrap 'er up.
  23. Erin tensed at everyone else's suspicions, even though she hadn't seen anything herself. The park looked normal to her... maybe too normal? She set down her shopping bags around the corner of the cotton candy booth so they'd be out of the way and her hands would be free. "What are we looking at?" she demanded of no one in particular.
  24. "I think my schedule's full, but maybe I'll ask Mrs. Dugan how many credits we're allowed to have in a term," Erin said thoughtfully. "Geez, after this summer, I don't want to get bored all of a sudden." She snorted, and took another bite of her cookie. "I'm not taking any tutoring, so I'll be doing maybe half as much work. You going to go out for any of the intramurals?"
  25. "I don't actually have a mask, either," Stesha admitted with a sheepish grin. "I was going to get one, but I was sort of waiting until Halloween, when they go on sale. It's a pretty poor excuse for a costume, really." She wondered how much an actual real hero costume cost, and if she was going to be able to afford it without maxing out her credit card. Still, there was no harm in just looking, as long as someone didn't try to wedge her into a spandex sausage casing. "Next Saturday sounds good."
