  1. Kimber managed a small nod as she let her whole body sag, looking thoroughly miserable. "Yeah... So I can't say anything to her about it, probably not ever; she'd take it the wrong way and that would... that would just be the worst ever." From her expression even contemplating that situation had her torn between wanting to throw up or burst into tears. Wringing her hands, she gave Indira a hopeless look. "I still want to help her get better and start making up for some of the stuff that she's done but she's gonna figure out that something's weird sooner or later. You've seen me try to lie, she'll see right through me! It's just a mess and I haven't even been able to worry about whether I l-like other girls too or just Tarva." The poltergeist spread her hands, hoping for some illuminating bit of insight that might help her out of her quagmire.
  2. "Probably, yeah," Jill agreed without protest, not rubbing it in but not exactly going out of her way to spare Wildcat's feelings, either. They were in a rush, after all. Firing her grappling line off one more time with a flick of her wrist she snared the side of the strip mall's multi-tiered sign and brought herself arcing through the air in a somersaulting flip that ended in three point landing atop one of the closed barrels. If she was going to start barking orders it sure wouldn't hurt to make an appropriate entrance. She got the reaction she was going for as one of the young women handing out samples jumped back with a yelp while her partner instinctively raised both hands to cover her face. The teen with the camera was so startled he tripped and fell loudly on his rear but to his credit he trained his bulky equipment on the newly arrived superhero and kept shooting. "I need you to stop what you're doing right now!" Jill barked in the tone of someone used to taking charge in emergency situations. She lifted the small force field containing the bottle they'd found into view. "These drinks have been tainted, they've already made several people very sick. Wildcat, make sure this is what you've been smelling." The small crowd reacted immediately, dropping open bottles of Maul to the parking lot and murmuring nervously to each other.

  4. Kimber watched Tarva walking away for considerably longer that Indira did and when she turned back around her cheeks had turned a deep cerulean shade and she seemed a little out of breath, tugging at the collar of her turtleneck. "Wha...? I, um, no, I'm not really thinking with my best judgement on this one," she admitted with a flustered waving of her hands, squirming self-consciously in her floating seated pose and trying to figure out if she suddenly felt underdressed or overdressed. "I'm not even supposed to like girls that way! N-not that anybody shouldn't!" she clarified quickly, covering her eyes with one hand and waving frantically with the other. "But I don't! Didn't! Usually! Oh, jams, I can barely explain this in a way that makes human sense, I dunno if there's even is a Kinigosi equivalent, really." Trying to compose herself and failing miserably, she added, "But definitely no claiming! Is that really a...? No, nevermind, later! What I mean is that's the other part of the problem." Now the poltergeist seemed less embarrassed and more melancholy, meeting Indira's eyes with a dejected frown. "She's different when she's not trying to act all gnarly, really! But..." She bit her lip, momentarily unsure whether this was something she had the right to share but ultimately deciding Indira needed to understand the context. "In the Terminus, they made her do stuff. Not... not just all the killing. And I promise I'm not ignoring all the horrible things she's done, honest! I can't. But now she thinks we're her bosses and she thinks that means she needs t-to do whatever makes us happy so we don't get rid of her. You see?"
  5. LaMarr didn't say anything to their hostess right away, his attention fully on the man who's originally answered the door. If Paige hadn't already gotten him thinking about the old days he wasn't sure if he would have picked up on it but something about that sputtered oath jogged his memory and looking at the middle-aged man's fit build something clicked. "Jiminy Cricket," he muttered under his breath, folding his arms over his chest and frowning slightly. "All the times I tried to get you to shut up in the middle of a fight and now you don't want to talk?" he asked cryptically, making eye contact with Jean's father over the tops of his sunglasses. "You the one who called me?"

Trevor followed her eyes down to the sling, its plastic making an annoying sound as it rubbed against his suit jacket. "Just a sprain," he assured her dismissively, voice to weary to be properly embarrassed. "Joe's been covering my patrols, went out looking for a fight Saturday anyway. ...hadn't slept in a few nights. Got sloppy." That was a tough thing to admit while she'd been off saving the galaxy from threats of unimagined scale but with everything else he couldn't work up the energy to really care. "Mark's been planning the... 'in-costume' memorial. Been tricky; half the community assumed he was already-- Nnh." Unable to complete that thought out loud, he rubbed his eye with his good hand, mouth twisting into a small grimace. If he'd slept since his misadventure on Saturday it hadn't been for as long as he obviously needed. Even for someone with his nocturnal schedule he had noticeable bags under his eyes and Erin could have sworn the onyx black of his eyes was tinged with red. "Eve has people making sure no one tries to take advantage. Magic or..." He made a vague gesture and grimaced. There were plenty of villains who wouldn't have hesitated to defile an old heroes remains for their own ends given half a chance. "So. Wasn't... wasn't alone, I... So glad you're home," he admitted halfway through trying to assuage her professed guilt, pressing his forehead to her own and trying to keep his breathing steady and shallow.
  7. "Coward!" Star-Khan seethed, regaining momentum as he avoided blow after blow, cold computational additions to his mind gradually accumulating the data necessary to predict his opponents' moves before they were even made. Molten slag still dripping from his armor sizzled into bits of exposed flesh and gradually melted wiring underneath conductive metal plating but he flicked it away the way one might an offending bit of mud. "Mercy makes you weak and that is why you will commune!" The schizophrenic bent to his ravings was taking its toll, his eyes wide and bulging and he prepared for his counter-attack. With gravelly bravado, Rock rolled to his feet like a small avalanche and shot back, "Rrrock!" Tough words, but he was starting to wonder if they were going to be able to stop the tyrant at all, let alone putting him on trial for his crimes. There wasn't much to do but try, however and setting his jaw with a loud crunch he barreled toward Star-Khan with his shoulder down. The attack was too slow to catch his target off-guard but as long as he was paying attention to Rock he wasn't watching Galvanic...

  9. Ghost Girl watched with a sort of detached interest as the antibody's attacks passed through her immaterial form without resistance, the hyper-aggressive drone unable to understand that its assault was proving ineffective. She studied its mutilated, snarling face for a long moment before her own lips pulled back from icicle like teeth, sharp and jagged rather than the small, flat squares she'd been happy to display in broad smiles on the shuttle ride. "You're not going to hurt anyone else," her voice rattled like a frigid wind howling down a long tunnel as she drew back one arm and plunged her hand deep into the cyborg's chest. The meat puppet shuddered as sparks began to fly from its electronics before exploding with high pitched screeches and acrid smoke. It collapsed to the ground in pieces while Ghost Girl floated ominously through the cloud toward her next target.

  12. Kimber placed both hands on top of her head and ducked between her shoulders, letting her bangs drop in front of her eyes before they were inevitably swept backward in the phantom wind that constantly pulled at her hair and clothing. "I know you wouldn't anyway, it's just... euuuugh...! I know I'd totally look at me like I was stupid. Ugh! Okay, okay, I'm just gonna get it over with." Taking a few steadying breaths, she closed her eyes for a moment before squaring her shoulder resolutely. "So, remember how I went like a whole year avoiding talking to Tarva 'cause I thought it was probably going to be super awkward? Well it's worse than that 'cause I finally talked to her and now I kinda maybe have a giant crush on her!" The last few words came out as barely more than a hiss from between the hands planted over her face in maximum embarrassment. "Indiiiiiraaaa, what'm I gonna dooooo?!"

Trevor's shoulders shuddered slightly as he inhaled thickly, breath catching in his throat and eyes stinging as faint wisps of sooty mist rose from behind his sunglasses. "You're safe," he managed after one abortive attempt that same out more as an unintelligible rasp. Letting out the breath heavily he squeezed his good arm around Erin more tightly. "Home and safe. All that matters." Stepping back slightly, he ran his fingertips along the side of her face, convincing himself that she was really there. Looking over to the Night Cycle, he nodded stiffly. "Good work, Redbird. Thank you." The motorcycle's front tire turned back and forth while the holographic avatar shifted uncomfortably. "I... yes, of course. I was about to reintegrate myself with the manor's security systems. I shall give you a measure of privacy." With a curt bow the projection winked out of view and the Night Cycle retreated back in the direction of the garage. Watching the vehicle roll silently away for a long moment, Trevor turned back to Erin. "Parents told you?" His voice didn't crack this time but it sounded rough, parched.

With the sickly smokey smell of singed flesh starting to fill his nostrils LaMarr kept his grip on the fire generating teenager with little reaction beyond a grunt. The rest of the theater was still in absolute chaos and if the shouts from above were any indication he needed to sort things out on the ground floor and get up to the balcony as soon as possible. "Girl, I know it's not your fault," he growled, gritting his teeth as he turned his chin so that he wasn't aiming his formidable voice too directly at her head, "but you have GOT TO STOP!" The force of his shout rippled outward, knocking biting, grappling movie goers toppling over the backs of folding seats and stumbling to the newly renovated floor. Those nearby who kept their feet under them dropped whatever they were doing to sprint away from the source of the bellow. LaMarr had no idea what they were seeing when they looked at him under the mind bending effects of the tampered film but for now it was good enough that they'd stopped fighting each other.

"Pique. It's French," Ellie corrected flatly, staring at the phone she'd switched over the speaker and set down on the table so that the entire room could hear. "I... Yeah, I'll be right out, Fleur. Thanks for taking care of it." Hanging up with a tap of her finger and letting out a slow breath, she turned to Mara, her expression clouded. "Mind backing me up? Sounds like one of the guys you dealt with last time we all did this dance." If medical student's expression was clouded, the one her mother wore was a hurricane. Wheeling her chair to the base of the stairs, Gina cupped her hands around her mouth and bellowed, "JOHN!" On the second floor, Erik's head popped abruptly out of the bedroom door, hair inexplicably more mussed than when he'd run inside and looked to Steve in alarm. "Did she just shout what I think she did?" he asked the big, bald man urgently, muscles in his jaw visibly clenching with a mixture of emotions that were hard to put names to. The call successfully reached the rooftop, albeit diminished by distance and the barriers of closed doors and Jean winced mightily. "Perhaps less cooked than torn to pieces and fed to the dogs, non? I think it may be better to resolve the question of our Dakanan friend before I go to meet my untimely though admittedly well deserved end."
  18. LaMarr rubbed his left temple with some irritation as he gave Paige a bemused look. "Eh? No, I got an anonymous call saying somebody needed help," he clarified, taking a moment to remember that the reformed bank robber was old enough to have kids in school now. He'd known that already, of course, but it was a hard thing to internalize, getting old, and it didn't help that the Clines seemed to take the same attitude toward aging that they once had toward property laws. "Is that the new Scarab? Well. Not 'new' any more, are you? Sorry." Now that he was standing right next to the two women it was easier to keep his attention on the red and gold armored psychic, though he still felt his eyes trying to flick away when his concentration wavered. "I'm assuming it wasn't either of you who gave me a ring or you wouldn't have bothered with the phone. There more going on here I should know about?"

Wail In that case, he'll use the above power in an attempt to counter the audio causing the Confuse effect, while still imposing the Trip check on the crowd around him. They heard the familiar rumble of engines before they saw Erin's metallic blue pickup turning onto the long, curving path up to the mansion. It was strange for Trevor to be driving the truck at all let alone without Erin there herself but she realized that it was the only vehicle in the garage that wasn't a smooth matte black and among only a handful that had their origins in the past decade. All of them fit neatly into the motor pool that was half preparedness for every situation and half enthusiast's collection his grandfather had started in the 1940s. Clearly he'd needed something that could stand apart from all that. Trevor saw them as well as he pulled up because the engine had barely had time to quiet before the driver's door was swinging open and the dark haired heir was sliding hurriedly out. He was clean shaven and tidy, wearing a respectable if understated suit for whatever meeting he'd been in, sunglasses as always covering his eyes. His tousled black hair had been cut at some point during her absence but what drew more attention was that she could see it clearly, his beaten but sturdy fedora no where in sight. It was hard to say what was more concerning, the lack of hat or the garish line green sling holding his left arm in place against his torso. The latter didn't prevent him from rushing over to Erin and wrapping his right arm around her in a fierce hug, burying his face in the crook of her neck without a word and holding her tightly.
  22. "Any number?" Set asked with exaggeratedly innocent curiosity. "Be you suggesting four, mayhaps five...? Double digits?!" The godling made a properly scandalized expression, covering his mouth with and open hand and sending an intent sideways look Sharl's way, if not Sharl's face, per se. "Tis a battery life or extension cord jape in there somewhere, I am sure. Well! Don't feel embarrassed by your projection anxiety on my account, Sharl; tis a common experience among many men, so I'm told." The teasing had taken on a playful, singsong quality in stark contrast to the dry tone with icy undercurrents the Heliopolian had used in their first meeting. "I do not believe the balcony to be a likely point of attack, Temperance," a rumbling voice answered from above the balcony. In leonine form, Sekhmet was perched vertically on the wall above them, fanged face downward and claws digging deeply into the building. Set blinked. "Ah, how did you get up there, oh She Before Whom Evil Trembles?" "I climbed." "Ah. Quite. Carry on, then."
  23. Kimber gave Indira a shamefaced look as she mimicked her best friend's seated posture, albeit without the benefit of a chair under her floating form. "Ooh, I should have talked to you right away but I was embarrassed and confused and-- actually, I'm still pretty embarrassed and confused but I had to talk to you. Only..." Wringing her hands distractedly, the poltergeist looked over her shoulder at the mediating sorceress and around the rest of the cabin. She lowered her voice to just more than a whisper and leaned forward. "Only you've gotta promise not to say anything to Eve or Tarva or anybody, okay? Super serious right now! And you can't look at me like you're disappointed! You do this thing with all three eyes when you think someone's being dumb and you can't do that this time!" It was clear to Indira from the way that Kimber was babbling and chewing on her bottom lip that this was less about ensuring her good behaviour and more about stalling for time so that the translucent blue Canadian didn't have to get to the heart of the matter just yet.

"But... He..." Erin felt the motorcycle shudder slightly under her fingers than nearly topple over to one side, going limp until her hand on the bars was all that was holding it upright. Redbird recovered her equilibrium quickly but from the expression on her avatar's face she was still floundering. The hologram flickered momentarily, the flesh tone going from pale to pallid. "My emotive response is consuming processing normally reserved for basic functions. I do not know how to... 'deal' with this information. I am angry but I do not have an appropriate target for my fury." The Night Cycle's tires rolled forward half a rotation then back again, fidgeting uncomfortably. "How... how must we 'be there' for our pair bond? Tell me what to do, shieldmaiden! Please." Erin didn't know if she'd ever heard the autonomic machine intelligence make a request like that before.

"Eh? He can't have died," Redbird scoffed, her avatar turning to give Erin a look like she was being quite simple. "Human, yes, but the elder is not like the bland citizenry in the city whiling away their too-short lives make-work and idle entertainments! He is a-- a valorous warrior! A respected source of wisdom earned in-- in perilous battle! Battles he won without dying!" Her voice, coming from the speakers of the motorcycle rather than the mouth of her holographic projection, started off boisterous but doubt began to creep in as she listened to her own words and considered them against what she actually knew to be true of human biology. The red haired avatar's gestures became broader and more hurried as though emphatically willing her argument to be correct. "He cannot have been... used up, have simply ceased to be without weapon in hand and foe's blood on his fists! He cannot. That would be absurd! That would-- it would be-- be--" She struggled to find a way to express the sentiment but she came from a people born into endless war against unspeakable horror. The Furions had no word for 'unfair'.
