    Midnight Elegy

The Hunter that stepped into the foyer to greet her was not the one Erin was expecting, although his footsteps were just as silent across the hardwood floors of the manor and his expression just as carefully neutral. "Ms. White." It had been quite a while since she'd seen Trevor's father, Ted Hunter, but he looked exactly the same as she recalled, having evidently inherited the stubborn defiance of passing time that made his own father so vital even in old age. Well, perhaps not exactly the same; there was something about the corners of Ted's eyes, something the reminded her of Trevor when he'd gone two nights without actual sleep and was starting to hit the wall. He looked tired. Even his movements were a little off as he brought a thumb and forefinger to his eyes. "Tt. Pardon. Erin. Good that you're back."
  2. "That's great! I knew you'd know what to do, Lucy!" Kimber chirped energetically, pumping a fist in the air enthusiastically. It was good to hear the lawyer so confident in the necessary action to resolve the dilemma she'd brought her; the phantom had been worried that ghosts would have simply fallen outside the constraints of the law. Thankfully living in Freedom City meant living with a considerably more robust catalogue of precedent. Giving Lucy's assistant another wave, she added "It was nice to meet you! I'll try to float through a door next time!"
  3. April 20, 2015 It wasn't that Kimber didn't think Eve would have agreed to fly them all out to Thunder Bay if the poltergeist's hometown hadn't also been where their fearless leader had met her girlfriend but it had certainly made pitching the trip easier. She had an errand to run in the woods outside of the city and while she could have probably performed it alone she had little desire to do so. Accepting that she had died and everything that came with it was one thing, actually visiting the resting place of her corporeal remains was something else entirely. The harder sell had been getting Tarva included in the outing. The trick wasn't so much convincing Eve - the Martel heiress wouldn't have let the sorceress work for her in the first place if she hadn't believed Tarva was worth taking a chance upon - as it was negotiating the paperwork involved in transporting an Annihilist defector across national borders. Ultimately while the Freedom League may have had their politely unspoken doubts about just what Eve and her Claremont classmates had done to earn the Furion's regard they couldn't argue that that regard existed and that made her more or less the de facto authority. If she said they'd keep an eye on Tarva in Canada, then an eye would be kept. The flight, meanwhile, gave Kimber an opportunity for a conversation she'd admittedly put off for too long. Floating over to Indira in the spacious cabin, she folded her translucent legs beneath her and cupped her chin in her hands. "Hey, so, I know I've been kinda acting weird since we got back in space. S'okay if we talk?"

  5. "The important thing is making sure nobody else drinks this stuff," Jill told him, already pulling her grappling pistol from her jacket but sticking to jogging along at street level for the time being to make it easier to talk to Wildcat. "This might still be an honest albeit colossally negligent @#$% up. If they were stupid enough to hurt people on purpose in my territory? Then hopefully they're stupid enough to resist getting taken in, entendido?" If the tone of voice had left any question, the look she shot her new ally over her shoulder left little doubt that she had her own, unique interpretation of the Hippocratic Oath. She didn't go out of her way to pick a fight and her priority was protecting the innocent, not punishing the guilty. That didn't mean she had any patience or mercy for someone who knowing put children at risk.
  6. Alright, Paradigm is up!
  7. The barrage of lightning that Galvanic rained down on Star-Khan would have been enough to fuse every piece of complex electronics in a reasonably sized shuttlecraft. Whatever defenses the Communion had built into the cyborg's enhancements were evidently far beyond what one would find in a reasonably sized shuttlecraft, the electricty channeling down orderly pathways to his raised fists. The power was converted by his internal generators and released in a cascade of cosmic energy that surged through the hallway, catching all three of his attackers in its wake. Rock toppled backward from the force of the blast, hitting the deck with a deafening thud while Paradigm and Galvanic bore the brunt and stayed upright.
  8. The force multiplier in this case is +3, so his attack has a total DC of 15 + 8 + 2 + 3 = 28. Antibody Group 1 Toughness Save vs DC 28: 1d20+2 3 That's the first wave of antibodies demolished. Once Roulette's IC post is up I'll follow up with a GM post.
  9. I-800-JUSTICE had never actually been disconnected. At first it had simply been easier to maintain the number than figuring out some way to prevent it from being abused - the days of going toe to toe with the freelancers of 1-800-VILLAIN hadn't been far enough go for anyone to want to take that risk - but with Jav and Yelena both gone LaMarr could never quite bring himself to pull the plug. No one called it any more, of course. The occasional automated call or someone with more knowledge of local history than good taste curious to see what would happen but a fairly sophisticated automated system weeded out all of that and returned a terse recorded message. There were, however, certain keywords or phrases that instead routed the call to his person number. Some of them were specific, like 'utahraptor' or 'Typhoon'. Some were more general and one of them was simply 'we need help'. He supposes it could have been a trap. That was fine, anyone stupid enough to think setting a trap for Wail would end well for them wasn't much of a threat in the first place. Anyone who thought they'd get off lightly for misusing that number doubly so. If it wasn't, though, well. Keith LaMarr had never been much good at turning down a plea for assistance. Walking the streets of Southside, he scanned the neighbourhood as inconspicuously as a man of his imposing silhouette could manage.

  12. Wildcat's search turned up a fairly standard publicity campaign, the same jargon heavy blurb lauding Maul copy and pasted across a dozen sites, worded more to optimize search engine results than to preserve the illusion that it had been posted by anyone other than an employee of the manufacturer. Who that manufacturer was remained unmentioned, however, and he didn't see anything talking about where the drink could be purchased or giving the location of a promotional event. "Alright, the free samples thing is still a good idea, let's just think. Bring up your maps app and show our location," Jill instructed, leaning forward to get a better view of the plastic covered smart phone and frowning in concentration. She pointed out several nearby points, the spots where she'd encountered victims. "The only place I can think of where it'd make sense to do something like that that's also close to all of those points is the Green Elm strip mall. We'll head that way while you keep your nose open."

"Th-thanks..." Kimber sniffled quietly, voiced muffled by her sleeve as she rubbed it over her face trying to dry her tears. Leaning slightly into Eric's hand she sagged slightly. She had literally no weight to speak of but the ectoplasm let the barista maintain the illusion of hand against shoulder well enough. "For the advice and just for listening. Sorry for being such a mess. I just have... so many feelings." She poured more than a few of them into those two syllables, making it more of a groan than a word. Straightening back up and making sure her feet were convincingly on the ground she carefully went about tugging her outfit back into order. "Sorry to drop all of that on you, Eric. I didn't mean to use up your whole break like that. At least with the crazy ghosts you can just send them on their way and be done with it, eh?"

Jean gave Chris a sideways glance. "You understand I am French, oui, not Spanish? I play it up a bit while in the States, to be honest." Looking back down at the street he continued, "As for Nassor, he is in fact famille, after a fashion, whether anyone involved would wish it so. I can't claim to know the man well, so I hesitate to infer much more from his actions. There's a considerable range in how seriously the assorted members de la Maison take familial responsibility, hm?" Without turning around he steppled his fingers and leaned back. "Had he intended infiltration I doubt you would have seen him coming. No offense intended, of course. ...well, perhaps un peu. I am French." "Ha, well, 'trouble' does feature prominently on our family crest, as it were," Nassor admitted with a wry chuckle, a warm, melodic bass several tones lower than his speaking voice. "It would be fair to say that... medical emergencies are a likely outcome of recent events. Please understand, the last thing I wish is to be rude but to explain in any more detail would be to risk your personal safety." Recalling an earlier part of the conversation he raised his hands in a calming gesture and managed a small smile. "Please do not allow any of that to dissuade you from placing your nephew in the care of the school. My cousin and his more immediate family have proven themselves staunchly opposed to that 'trouble', if I may be euphemistic. The safety of his students is quite assured."

  18. "Pathetic. Weaklings!" Star-Khan bellowed with a snarl that cut through the restrained airs of formality he'd been adopting up until then. He threw Galvanic off in plenty of time to handily dodge Paradigm's attack, the blow instead leaving a crater the side of a small car in the deck plating of the mining base's floor. As the cyberformed conqueror spun about it the air he turned to face Rock with his feet planted, a deep red glow and heat shimmer rising from the small gaps between the uneven stones that made up his form. Hands clenched into fists tight enough the sound of metal scraping against metal could be heard, Star-Khan roared, "Well?!" The mineral mercenary responded with a roar of his own but rather than mere fury his spewed forth scalding magma in an eruption that blanketed a wide swath of the hallway. "RO~O~O~O~OCK!" For a split instant it looked like Star-Khan was simply going to stand in place and accept the full brunt of the wave but at the last possible moment the silvery slurry in the tubing jutting out of his neck surged and he slid nimbly out of the way of the worst of it. Where the magma still managed to splash him clothing burned with the acrid smell of synthetic fibers melting and exposed metal glowed white hot. "That cannot be the best you can offer, damn you!" he cried out, face contorting in frustration and pain. "KILL ME!"

  21. "Whoop, sorry! I've got it!" Kimber assured the aide and sure enough the scattered documents lifted off of the floor and back into the air, spinning lazily as they flew to stack themselves neatly into a stack on the corner of Lucy's desk. Looking pleased with herself, the phantom dusted off her hands with a broad grin. "And if you thought that was rad you should see what my old teammate coulda done with all that paper! I'm Ghost Girl, but you can call me Kimber! Sorry again for scaring you, kinda in my nature." She offered Erica a small wave but didn't bother sticking out her hand to shake; being incorporeal made certain niceties less practical. Turning back to the seated lawyer, her excitement quickly ratcheted back up. "Right! Have you seen that Weizenstein guy on TV? He's all over the place partly 'cause he's just super rich or something but his mansion is haunted, see? And he knows about it and he's using the ghost like a... like a pet or something in all his interviews, all 'look how outrageous I am, I have a ghost!' and stuff! So not cool! And I was all 'there's gotta be a rule against that sort of thing' and you're a lawyer so you know about all the rules so here I am!"
  22. Jill scowled and held out a hand. Rather than taking the bottle directly, however, the gesture brought a hollow half sphere of force field shimmering into the air between them with a faint crackle of energy that even Wildcat had to strain to hear. "Drop it in there. Probably not a contact poison but no point in pushing your luck." Once the empty bottle was inside the force field closed into a little floating ball that Jill was careful to feel a foot or so away from herself. "The first vic was at a basket ball court, could've had a bottle of this stuff, too, maybe." Her voice had a cool, sharp edge to it, a clinical analysis of the situation insulating her from a rising anger. "If it smells strongly enough you could follow it just from the people who'd been poisoned, now that you know what you're looking for could you track it to the source? If it really is new it's probably not in every store yet."

"Isn't it? Kimber shot back, hoarse as the icicles in her voice snapped into shards. Shoulders visibly shaking, she wrapped her arms more tightly around herself as the cold clarity of her eyes melted to a liquid sea green. "I was in her room, and I d-didn't mean-- I wasn't--" Her mouth worked soundlessly for a moment, spectral tears tracing trails down her cheeks. "She knew I was there and it didn't even occur to her to complain, she just tried to write a poem I'd like? It was... sweet. When I apologized she wasn't even mad a-and I needed her to be mad but-- She keeps saying things where I can't tell if she's flirting or if she's just trying to stay on my good side so we don't send her away and-- and-- and--" Breaking down into ashamed sobbing, the poltergeist curled in around herself and Eric had to strain to understand what she was saying. "H-how can I kn-now that and s-st-still want... W-want to.. I'm a maugh-augh-aughnsterrrrr...!"

"Marmalade, Eric, don't make me say it!" Kimber admonished, covering her reddening face with both palms and giving the barista an accusatory look between her fingers. The look slowly cooled then turned oddly hollow before she looked away. "And I meant I already talked to Tarva about it. See, she-- it's worse than you're thinking. They have this thing in the Terminus, called the Doom Coil? It's like that poem about the abyss, you look at it and it makes you just give up and become a monster because nothing matters anyway. She used her magic, okay, to protect her mind but if they knew they'd have killed her and so she did... she did a lot of horrible things. I saw." The phantom tapped an index finger to her temple. She knew Eric would understand, he was after all the one who'd taught her to pick up and 'read' moments of death. "I'm not saying it's okay, only... they wouldn't have just killed her. Her old boss, he..." There was a long, heavy silence as her sentence faded. Kimber's lips faded to a pale frostbite blue while her eye filled into dark pools and the shadows of the alley seemed to cling more closely to her face. As she wrapped her arms around herself protectively the loose litter behind the coffee shop began to stir as it caught in a breeze, swept up in a wide circle around them. "...people think if they only imply things I won't understand," she started in a voice a cool and brittle as icicles. "He liked that she was pretty."
