  1. While Sekhmet handily brutalized the more aggressive and aesthetically challenged of the two wolf creatures, Set arrived not far behind, smart phone in hand, tapping away with practiced speed and grateful for the city's more consistent cellular network. Set, God of Awesome @readySETgoRejoice faithful followers, Set returns to fair Freedom! Also: wolf people! One more and we shall have a t-shirt! #roadtrip #crowdsorcery Spinning about neatly on his heel and extending an arm, the godling snapped a photo of himself grinning broadly with the second, still standing werewolf in the background, uploading it along with the announcement of their arrival by bus. The phone's flash barely reached past the foreground and with the focus on Set himself the bestial figure behind him was barely more than a silhouette of blonde fur and ripped clothing but in the time it took Sekhmet's opponent to sail through the air his feed was already awash in replies. Set called idly as he kept one eye scanning the updating stream of comments and the other on the dazed predator. With a distracted gesture he sent a few tendrils of shadow snaking about the base of the tree to ensnare the first wolf creature but it retained enough of its wits to scramble away. The godling seemed considerably more interested in the other werewolf in any case. "No friend of the cowardly criminal, though, hmm? Unless some other canid contessa sharing your distinctive plumage has been showing the local cutpurses a rough time?" Looking upward his grin broadened even further, the black lines framing his eyes crinkling with merriment. "And Temperance! Truly, thy presence tis a salve for the heart of a weary traveler, oh sublime sapphire!"

  4. Before the snarling monster could tear further into its intervening counterpart a blazing, fist-sized sun crashed into its misshapen snout hard enough to force it back. Six feet of bronze muscle followed behind the blow, charging forward with inhuman speed and hands wreathed in golden flames. With a leonine hiss, Sekhmet pressed her advantage, fists lashing out again then a third time, hammering blows leaving singed fur and blackened hide where they struck. Coming in low and surging upward she locked the werewolf in a wrestling hold proven effective millennia ago and honed in the intervening years, pinning the larger beast's clawed arms. "Know the fury of a true predator, dog!" the goddess commanded contemptuously, pivoting about and hurling the mass of uneven muscle through the air. The werewolf crashed into one of the park's trees with a sharp crack of trunk and bone. Lifting her chin, Sekhmet let loose a savage roar that echoed throughout the night air.

  7. "Ooh! Ooh! I can carry you!" Kimber volunteered, bobbing up and down inside the plane and raising her hand as though answering a teacher's question in the classroom. "You probably weigh less than an alien made out of liquid metal, right? Oh, jams, that's kind of a personal question, isn't it?" The poltergeist quickly covered her mouth with one gloved hand before using both to energetically wave off any misunderstandings. "You don't look like you'd weigh more, obviously! You're very pretty! Dimitri thinks so! He's kind of a flirt, though, have you noticed?" Placing a hand to the side of her mouth did very little to render the last remark any more private than the rest of the conversation. "What was I saying, again? Oh! Right! Telekinesis! Way better than a parachute so long as I concentrate and keep focused! No worries at all!"
  8. Oh, good, Ghost Girl gulped silently, actual need to breathe or physical throat aside, lots of them. Covering her nose with the sleeve of her tattered reaper's cloak, she flew invisibly back toward Temperance and their visiting friends, making good time as she passed immaterially through trees and building snow drifts. Arriving in short order, she faded back into view with a wave to draw attention. "Hi! So, good news: outrageously huge, pulsing chunk of dead giant god, pretty tough to miss! Less good news: there's a bunch of spindly icicle guys stomping around, like this." Lengthening and thinning her own limbs and pulling teeth back from suddenly long, pointed teeth, she did her best impression of the monsters she'd seen. Snapping back to her normal proportion and massaging her jaw with both hands until her teeth returned to normal, she added, "Extra less good news: I think the heart is leaking. Or bleeding, I guess? Either way it's making a real mess."

Given how low key their witnessed visit to City Hall had been and the way the dryad measured time more by the passing of seasons than calendar days Erik hadn't really expected her to have remembered the anniversary on her own but he wasn't above meeting her smile with a coy grin. "I dunno, Min, this is pretty serious. Probably need to brainstorm together to think of an appropriate apology." One hand left his wife's hip to pull her shoulder toward him for a longer, more heated kiss that offered some suggestions of its own. * * * * * Later, with the sun outside the apartment's windows considerably higher in the sky, Erik kept an eye on the stove top in their small kitchen and dining room where omelettes simmered. Adjusting the towel he's thrown around his waist right out of the shower, he looked over his shoulder at the toddler watching him intently from her highchair. "How're those cheerios working out for you, Edie?"
  10. As the Greyhound bus pulled into the station laughter and chatter could be heard from within at odds with the sleepy travelers usually disembarking at that late hour. As the doors swung open a shirtless young man with brick red dreadlocks and a grin from ear to ear bounded out, waiting nearby while the rest of the passengers made their way down the steps. "Now Gertrude, remember, the next time your grandson gives you attitude about resetting your e-mail password you just show him that photograph," he reminded the elderly tourist in a pastel floral top and glasses with lenses a half inch thick, "and ask him who among you has met the genuine internet sensation, ha ha!" Next off the bus was a rotund fellow with a bristling black moustache and a pronounced waddle to his steps. "Arnold, heed good advice and cut back on the red meats," Set told him sternly, the expression softened by a friendly slap on the shoulder. "Serious face, aye? Your learned wife tis only thinking of your heart, chum." With a friendly word and exchanging of online contract information with each of the bus's passengers, the godling was still shaking the hand of an enthusiastic young fellow who it had turned out spoke three different languages fluently, none of them English, when a much less jolly looking woman with smoldering golden eyes stalked off, glaring at him. "A fortnight and a half, liesmith," Sekhmet grated through clenched teeth as she set sandal clad feet on pavement and ran a hand over her face. "Thy 'Spring Break' was to be a mere handful of days." Set shrugged affably, waving to the driver over Sekhmet's shoulder. "True enough, oh Mistress of Dread, but dealing with that alligator cult distracted us well enough and Anna had promised a tour of the city and politeness if naught else insisted we take the band up on their offer to join their tour for a few stops! Had we not that masked miscreant would have gotten away with scaring away those small town real estate investors! Admittedly, I'm a little hazy on the next few days after that party but with nine telephone numbers scribed in marker on arms and legs between us I might only assume--" The taller Heliopolian clamped a hand over her charge's mouth, halting his rambling recounting on their near month of misadventures abroad from Freedom City and sniffed the air. "Rrrh. Tis a wretched scent on the air..." Her narrowed gaze swept in a wide arc before settling on the nearby Liberty Park, at which point she released the godling to begin walking purposefully in that direction. Massaging his jaw, Set hurried to catch up. "I told you, Sekhemt, tis simply the bouquet of New Jersey once more."

"Oh, I was just talking to--" Kimber began to point to one side before remembering that of course Indira was no more capable of seeing the elder phantom than the valley's other explorers. "Whoops. New ghost friend! Sounds like somebody with a talking ring has been poking around, mind controlling folks, holing up in the darkness and generally being a big creeper." She kept her voice low and concentrated for a moment on miming scampering over the uneven ground rather than just floating through the rocks. Turning back to the old fellow she added, "Thanks for the help! We'll definitely see what we can find out about your daughters! That's a super adorable unfinished business, so many people are all, 'grr, revenge, argh, bring my killer to justice'. Oh! Sorry, outrageously rude, I never got your name!"

Becky's initial reaction was a distracted murmur that dipped and rose in pitch as Eve made herself comfortable against her neck. Eventually she marshaled her thoughts enough to haltingly note, "I'm, um, I'm still a little new at this but I, ah, think the U-Haul thing is supposed to be joke." The idea of someone renting - or outright buying, she realized - an extra apartment just to make it more convenient to spend time with her was a little overwhelming. She wasn't honestly sure if she could say she was worth it and two-year gap withstanding it was all terribly fast but there was something about the Frenchwoman's lack of hesitation that swept things along in its wake. "You don't have to cook," the Canadian noted suddenly, the off-hand remark escaping before she could stop it. "Er, the meat, anyway, I mean." Coughing slightly, her cheeks reddened.

As Erin picked up Charlie, Blackbird's hologram blinked back into view, this time large as life with her statuesque build making her resemblance to Redbird more evident. "Kitty," she greeted with a small smile, bending slightly at the waste to look the feline in the eyes and reaching over to run a holographic finger across his nose, the ionized light ruffling the fur just enough to be noticeable. Erin could see faint lines of light emitting from Hematite's costume, generating a three dimensional albeit transparent image that remained perfectly rendered even as the young man with dark auburn hair shrugged by way of explanation. * * * * * In the Manor, Redbird herself had edged the motorcycle she was inhabiting closer to the conference table to allow her hologram more room to walk about unhindered. She'd found the humanoid representation made interacting with Earth natives considerably easier. "Twelve? Hmm." a series of strobing green lights from the bike ran over Knightfall and the autonomic machine intelligence grinned broadly. "Fast-twitch muscle fiber rating at... Ho ho! This one I like!" Nimbly hopping into the air with his knees pulled to his chest, Daybreak slipped his restrained wrists under his boots so that they were in front of him as he landed. A quick, forceful motion against part of his sledgehammer's handle snapped the zip-tie cleanly in two just as quickly as his sister had placed it on him in the first place. "Typically, the driver gets all the attention while the hard-working mechanic is to blame for every little thing," he sighed with exaggerated melancholy, ruining it with a chuckle. "Don't even check my compatibility, Birdie, it's too embarrassing. Almost as bad as Uncle Mark." That caught Trevor's attention away from the interaction between Sojourner and Mystery, narrowing his eyes. "...why would Mark be riding the Night Cycle?" Daybreak looked like he'd just been caught doing something he knew he shouldn't have, freezing mid-step. "Er. Actually, she's right, we should really get a perimeter set up, right? Aheh." "I can help keep everyone in communication," Mystery volunteered, heartened by Sojourner's encouragement. "I'm still getting the hang of it but even though we're from different timelines I guess some stuff is the same? Um, so your minds are kinda like hearing somebody else tell a story you've heard before. If that makes sense? I'm an only child so it's kinda neat..." She glanced up at the older woman with a soot hued blush colouring her cheeks, embarrassed to have admitted the sentiment aloud. "Hmm, a degree removed from shared experience," Travis mused, stroking his goatee with one hand. "Interesting. Would very much like to chat with all of you, indeed," he agreed with Tensile, letting the cyborg's attempts at time-traveling reassurance pass by. Trevor frowned slightly, looking about the faces in the room. "Tt. Don't like putting you in harm's way," he objected, feeling an undercurrent of instinctual protectiveness. He wasn't one to ask anyone else to risk their own safety protecting him even in normal circumstances. These, emphatically, were not normal circumstances.

  16. "Freakin' typical," the hundred handed titan grumbled in a bass rumble loud enough to vibrate the nearby windows that were still intact, using one of his many, many hands to massage his temple. "You try to do your damn job even if it's epically dull 'cause, hey, better'n Tartarus but a guy can't even get a brew without some wannabe amazons screwin' everything up. S'posed to be able to get away from gods on the mortal plane, seriously..." Gyges squared his stance to face both Tiamat and Sekhmet at once, his body language resigned but resolute. The lioness, for her part, launched herself fearlessly at the gigantic foe, weaving about his legs and sinking her claws deep into the Hekatonkheires' calves. The attack carved dark red rivulets into the Greek monster's flesh, eliciting a pained grunt even as he let loose with a flurry of savage punches in all directions, practically obscuring his own torso amid the hundred pistons. Where Sekhmet nimbly avoided the indiscriminate attack, Tiamat's wings took her out of reach of the worst of the blows while her scales were more than up to the tasks of weathering the rest. "Hraagh, not even the one we got permission to wax..."

Hematite barked a sharp baritone laugh at Erin's melancholy concerns, quickly covering his mouth with the back of one gloved hand and looking embarrassed for the outburst. "Hht, sorry, it's just... That was never an issue. Seriously." Coughing awkwardly, he looked away, uncomfortably rolling his left shoulder as though trying to loosen a tense muscle. "Not going to pretend we always, y'know, got along, especially when I was younger. Dad always said we were too much alike or something. Dunno. ...this is really frelling weird to talk about like this." Folding his arms, he turned back to face Erin, his expression aggressively defiant of any uneasiness, resolved to barrel through in spite of the strange situation. "You never missed a tournament for anything less than a global threat and you always... Look, I'm just not letting anything happen to you this time, alright? It's going to be a bigger pain if you up and walk out while we're still planning though, so... So." * * * * * "Watch the past tense there, son," Travis recommended to Tensile dryly, making his way unsteadily over to the swiveling chair in front of the computer bank and sitting down with a grunt. "Not incorrect, pride just worn out with the rest of me." The subtle twinge at the corner of elder hero's mouth suggested humour, though the creases around his dark, intense eyes seemed tired. "Didn't expect to meet any of you, either. Heartening." Back over at the conference table, Mystery reopened her eyes and set her feet back down on the solid ground. "...nothing. I can't sense anything that seems, um, wrong? Sorry." The petite telepath seemed to shrink even even more into her own silhouette, shoulders coming together and head ducking down between them while she wrung her hands. "It's alright," Trevor assured her, hesitating a moment before placing a reassuring hand on the teenager's shoulder. "May not be anything to sense. Stay attentive." The dark haired engineer looked across the table to Sojourner with a small shrug that asked whether or not he was handling the situation correctly. There was something inherently wrong about asking one of his daughters for parenting advice regarding another but with time travel skewing all of their respective ages he was willing to look for any help he could get. Attempting unsuccessfully to get his taller twin in a headlock as their elbowing quickly escalated into full on horseplay, Daybreak caught a look at the motorpool stretching out behind them into the further recesses of the Manor. "Hey Nightie, look, it's the Vincent before you get a chance to crash and total it," he pointed out, indicating a motorcycle in the lineup while stepping on her toes to try to get a literal leg up.
  19. Gulping silently at Dimitri's confirmation and further explanation, Kimber did her best to push the enormity of the horror out of her mind and maintain her usual, chipper demeanor in front of the vampires. She wasn't entirely clear how old they all technically were relative to each other but she didn't want to come across as the easily spooked kid of the group. After all, she was supposed to be the one who did the spooking. "Sometimes I wonder how they'd get anything done without us, eh?" she agreed with Lucy, floating higher into the air and tilting until she was horizontal and facing upward, hands behind her head as though she were floating atop gently bobbing waters. "Aralkum is probably pretty cold this time of year, right? That'll be nice, at least!"
  20. Kimber gave Heimdall a flat look with pursed lips. "Oh, sure, make the dead girl go check out the super creepy slenderman giant ice heart thing, she won't mind. It's not like you're the god of checking stuff out or anything." Sighing, she closed her eyes for a moment and raised one hand to support her cheek. "Sorry, sorry, that was really snippy. I'm still kinda on edge after the vision thing but I shouldn't take that out on you. Here." Scooping up a shivering, testy Avro, she placed the manticore atop the Aesir's head and flew off further in the direction they'd been traveling in, fading into invisibility along the way. She had a sneaking suspicion that whatever was out there wasn't the sort of creature that relied primarily on conventional sight but it seemed worth a shot anyway.

"Who, me, complaining? Are you kidding?" Erik laughed musically, hands sliding up toned thighs to rest on his wife's hips, thumbs rolling in slow circles across the sides of her stomach. "You may not have married the sharpest foil on the rack, mi reina, but your hubby's no dummy." With her back to the window, Min's hair became a hazy nimbus of white light framing her silhouette and Erik found a rumble of contented approval emerging from deep in his chest. A year later he doubted he'd ever get tired of waking up that that. In fact he knew he wouldn't, he mentally corrected himself; knew with the same razor certainty that told him which way to step in a duel without question or hesitation. "Happy anniversary, love."
  22. "Hey, mazel tov," Jive called out, tucking into a roll and coming up behind a nearby half-wall for cover that had until recently been a whole wall. Opening his arms, he released a shaken and much the worse for wear tabby which landed unsteadily before scampering off away from where the worst of the fighting had just died down. "If you're looking for a wedding planner, I actually know this guy--" The offer was cut short as the polyglot, bent over with a wince, coughing violently. When he straightened, there were flecks of blood on his lips, which he wiped away on the back of his wrist. A loud ZAM! drowned out his pained groan as Jump appeared several feet away, setting down a terrified Latino teenager with soot and dried blood smeared across his face and arms. Sparing a moment to direct the young man to the closest refuge point, the teleporter turned to the newly engaged couple. "Cline, there you are. Apartment complex to the southwest is coming down. Keith is bracing one wall but support structure is crumbling." Yelena's powers let her get into and out of spaces the others could not but the speedster was better suited for actually searching for trapped civilians in the first place. "ANY TIME, 'LENA!" a booming though strained voice bellowed with impossible volume from the direction she'd indicated. His whole back and both arms pushed into the side of the failing building, Wail felt a small cascade of loosened brick fragments bounce across his head and shoulders. "Hnnh. C'mon, hold together, damn you, just a little longer..."

The morning sunlight streaming through the window of the modest apartment above the Espadas School School of Self-Defense and Swordsmanship took on pale renditions of the vividly hued flowers growing across the window sill and up the sides of its frame. The plants were flourishing despite the lingering chill of early spring and the curtains were open to allow the cascade of light to gradually work its way across the floor, over rumpled bedsheets and finally across the eyelids of the slumbering couple. Ever the light sleeper, the leisurely way Erik Espadas opened his eyes belied the quickness with which he was alert, consciously choosing to luxuriate in the softness of the bed and the warm tangle of copper toned arms and legs wrapped around his own. Minerva's flowing white mane was practically a second blanket all on its own but with her lithe form pressed close against him Erik never would have noticed a draft anyway. He opened one eye wide enough to watch the familiar metronome twitch of her delicately pointed ear, in sync with the heartbeat in his chest and finally risked shifting from his immensely comfortable position to kiss the tip of the ear. Settling back down he rolled slightly to pull his wife further on top of his bare chest, lined and dimpled with faint scars, and murmured with feigned concern, "You know, Mrs. Espadas, I'm beginning to suspect this isn't a one night stand at all."
  24. "Heeeeey, she wasn't running away that time," Ghost Girl objected with a frown and a glare for Tarva, hands on her hips as she floated a little higher so that she could look downward at the dark sorceress. Corbin had been only slightly more willing to discuss that fight than Eve but that hadn't stopped stories from getting around Claremont here and there. More importantly she knew Eve well enough to dismiss some things out of hand and she didn't like Tarva's implication at all. "We're not running from some stupid little robot things this time, either! Um, right?" She looked over at Renard Bleue, backing up from the cell a bit as she realized she probably shouldn't have been speaking for the team. The doomdrones Tarva had described sounded pretty bad, sure, but the poltergeist had trouble getting too concerned about a technological threat, given her own nature. Besides, they'd taken down the Curator's robots handily enough when he'd invaded Earth, albeit at terrible cost; she couldn't imagine this would be any worse than that.

"I can sure try!" Kimber told the worn out looking specter, keeping her exuberant voice low and keeping one eye on their suspicious new friends. It probably wouldn't do them much good to let on that she could see or talk to dead people. She just hoped that helping the old man to his final rest would be as easy as she'd made it out to be. "I guess we are sort of trying to find somebody, actually. Somebody's been skulking around trying to find a magic pond, see, and messing around with other people's heads. Do you think you've seen anybody suspicious like that?"
