  2. The cowboy hat of the man Mara had cold clocked rolled about the lawn for a moment as her ultimatum hung in the air. "Perhaps we really should have announced ourselves more thoroughly," the group's leader admitted stroking his goatee with one hand even as he continued to occupy Geckoman with the sword in the other. "Ma chère fille, we are La Maison-- excuse me, the House of Swords and we are here for the child." "Well, that's going to be an issue," a voiced called clearly across the battlefield as Erik sauntered calmly outside. He briefly put a hand on Mara's shoulder as her walked past toward the melee, telling her in a low tone, "Thanks for getting the door." "Finally!" the British woman shouted. "The man of the bleeding hour! Look mate, we're taking the tyke!" "Congratulation, by the way," her Dakanan ally called with an off-puttingly genuine smile. The older man nodded. "Thank you, Nassar. At least someone remembers their manners. This can hardly be a surprise," he continued, addressing Erik. "We certainly can't entrust the next generation to someone so dismissive of tradition and obligation." "Well, at least you didn't come empty handed," the Jack replied, keeping his voice even as he crossed the distance. The muscular red haired woman moved to block him but in a sudden burst of movement he slipped past her, his blade turning to a streak of silver as it connected with the bald man's daka saber. With the spark and screech of metal on metal, the more exotic weapon went flying from the intruder's grasp, landing tip first in the grass well out of reach. "Put that with the rest of the baby shower gifts," he idly suggested to the inventor nearby, checking to see if the crystals were still affecting Fulcrum. Each of the swordsmen took a half step back, their attention fully on Erik as he moved to form a triangle with his harried teammates. He locked eyes with the Frenchman. "So it was your idea to bring a small army to my doorstep while a woman was giving birth, huh?" "Naturall--" The master fencer wasn't even able to finish the first word of his reply before Erik flew into motion again, his blade piecing high on his foe's swordarm before a haymaker punch crashed into a smirking face. The group's leader collapsed to the ground, unconscious as the younger man claimed his expertly crafted rapier for himself and regarded the remaining three fighters. "Now, did anybody really not see that coming?"
  3. A distressed Erik looked like he was about to protest before he caught the look in Willow's eyes. Leaning forward he kissed her lightly on her forehead, then stood and retrieved his fencing blade. "Sí, querida." As he walked out of the room, Ellie gave him a wry thumbs up, a gesture Yolanda was quick to imitate in her free hand as she scurried closer to the bed with her candle's faint illumination. Just outside the bedroom, his mother sat grimly in her chair, loaded service pistol in her lap as she stood guard. "Watch your ass," she commanded bluntly, pointing a finger at her son as if she were reminding him to clean his room or eat the rest of his vegetables. "Heh, that'd be a change," Erik responded, balancing his sword over one shoulder as he headed for the open front door.
  4. Okay, Jack starts with 5HP, gets one for the depowering, then for his complications for his family, teammates and neighbourhood. Similarly, Geckoman and Fulcrum each get an HP for their Complications regarding the Interceptors and Mara gets one for her Hatred of people who endanger children. 27 - Geckoman - Bruised x2, 2HP 27 - Jack of all Blades - Uninjured, 9HP 25 - HoS Zorro - Bruised x1, +2 Master Plan 24 - HoS Swashbuckler - Uninjured, +2 Master Plan 23 - HoS Pirate - Uninjured, +2 Master Plan 16 - HoS Barbarian - Uninjured, -5 Defense, +2 Master Plan (2 Rounds) 15 - Fulcrum - Bruised x3, Dazed, Staggered, -3 Constitution, -8 Toughness, 1HP (+7 Toughness/10 Impervious) 14 - HoS Hexcrafter - Uninjured 11 - Dragonfly - Bruised x1, 3HP 7 - HoS Atlas - Uninjured 6 - HoS Swordsmen (x10) - Unconscious Jack of all Blades Move Action: Move to the main fight. 5. "Woah, you can do banking stuff on the internet now?" Kimber gaped, completely without irony. "That sounds super convenient!" Avro batted a paw against the side of her head and mrrrow'd reproachfully, reminding her of the matter at hand. "Oh, um, right! Well, I'm definitely not dead! Obviously. That would be pretty silly, huh!" With an awkward laugh, the poltergeist tapped the tips of her index fingers together. She had a sudden realization that this extremely uncomfortable conversation must be what it was like every time she offhandedly brought up death or being dead with her friends. Her story sounded super suspicious even to the trusting Claremont student but surely someone actually trying to trick her would come up with a better story! Unless she knew I'd think that so she came up with a terrible story on purpose! Ahhhhh, what do I dooo? Fighting the urge to flail her arms in the air, she told the old woman, "Um, okay, so I'm going to assume you're not crazy or evil or maybe both but I want you to understand that I'm giving you an outrageous benefit of the doubt here, so if this is a trap you should feel really, really bad about it, okay?"
  6. LaMarr brought his forearms up to cover his face as the blast of fire washed over him, grateful that he didn't have much hair on his head to be singed off. His super-dense muscle tissue stood up to the heat better than a normal person would have been able to but his shirt was certainly ruined. Hearing Citizen's call and Glow's apprehension, the big man brushed some smouldering soot from his sleeve and strode purposefully across the room, shoving smaller robots out of the way. "May be this is the only way stop her controlling them," he noted grimly to the Australian teenager as he reached Danson's seated form. Pausing for a moment, he sighed and rubbed the space between his eyes with one large hand. This wasn't his first choice by any means, but he's fought astral projectors and others with similar abilities in the past and sometimes there wasn't much of an option, unsporting though it seemed. "Sorry, girl, but I need you to snap out of this," he apologized to the police officer with a wince before backhanding her with an open hand hard enough to either knock some sense into her or knock her out.

  9. On the other side of the fight, the remaining fighters obviously smelled the proverbial blood in the water as Fulcrum struggled just to stay upright. "I think it's fair to say she doesn't react well to the presence of daka crystal," the dark-skinned man noted conversationally, waving his saber about in the air a bit as energy was visibly sapped out of the statuesque heroine and into its blade before stepping forward and plunging it in for a debilitating strike. "It seems our junior members need a bit more of your training, however, my love." The claymore wielding woman snorted in annoyance as she swung the flat of her heavy blade against Fulcrum's cheek with the force of a sledgehammer. "Tch, I told you the rooks were nae ready," she countered. "Which one's the frail little blonde thing by the door supposed to be, anyhow?" "No one we were expecting, I think," her partner answered. Worryingly, it didn't seem as if the fight at hand even required their full attention to maintain. "And perhaps not so frail it seems, haha! All in good time."
  10. Geckoman's change in tactics did indeed catch the less experienced among their assailants off-guard, halving the number of blades dancing about himself and Fulcrum in a matter of moments. The more formidable swordsmen, however, barely looked phased by the development. Clearly Chris had been correct in his assessment of some f their number being merely cannon fodder. In fact, the woman in white leather responded to his challenging rebuke by biting the lower lip of a suggestive smirk. "You're saying you want to get me alone, one-on-one, with your expanding staff?" she asked him coyly as she spun into a pirouette that ended with her wickedly curved scimitar biting deep into the hero's shoulder and brought her face inches from his own. "Unf. How big does it get, treacle?" "Really, Patricia," the the goatee wearing Frenchman sighed reproachfully, exploiting Geckoman's momentary wince of pain to flick the tip of his rapier in a line across his target's opposite side, slicing though bright green costume to draw a line of blood. "There are some things an older gentleman does not need to hear coming from his niece."
  11. Fulcrum's lost her top 10 Toughness, so we're down to the Impervious stuff. Any Drain Toughness at this point has to work through the Impervious, too, so -1 for every 2 she fails by. 27 - Geckoman - Bruised x2 Dazed, 1HP 25 - HoS Zorro - Bruised x1, +2 Master Plan 24 - HoS Swashbuckler - Uninjured, +2 Master Plan 23 - HoS Pirate - Uninjured, +2 Master Plan 16 - HoS Barbarian - Uninjured, -5 Defense, +2 Master Plan (2 Rounds) 15 - Fulcrum - Bruised x3, Dazed, Staggered, -3 Constitution, -8 Toughness, 0HP (+7 Toughness/10 Impervious) 14 - HoS Hexcrafter - Uninjured 11 - Dragonfly - Bruised x1, 4HP, Fatigued Next Round 7 - HoS Atlas - Uninjured 6 - HoS Swordsmen (x1) - Uninjured
  12. What fresh madness is this?! KD, AA, hit me with some initiative rolls! The others, assuming you clue them in, will have to get to the fight before they can help.
  13. Meanwhile, Indira's telepathic trail had led Corbin all the way to the docks of Freedom City, the wisp of shared intuition strong despite the occasional taste of bacon leaking through the inexperienced ex-Kinigosi's link. With Sharl following behind him, the unusually dead upperclassman brought them up out of the river and into the middle of a chaotic battlefield. "What the hell did you do to my speed?!" a woman in a purple and grey jumpsuit standing nearby the river's edge screamed as with a gesture she caused a geyser of water as thick around as a tree trunk to rise just next to Citizen and slam like a living thing into a grey-skinned figure in ostentatious gold and crimson armor. Her target weathered the attack with obviously super human durability before lashing out with an arm that stretched like taffy and cracked the concrete in a near miss. "Foolish flesh-thing! Know you not that you face Argo, the Ultimate Android?!" "You @#$%, that's my power!" another woman shouted, a redhead with impressively huge hair and a green outfit with dark hemlines. As she pointed at Argo in accusation, a bolt of lightning sprang forth a leapt to the android, who gave an indignant roar. "..w-what the @$#% was that?!" Next to her, a bald man who's lack of shirt showed off his large if not terribly original tribal tattoos made a face of unintelligent anger. "Don' worry, LuAnn, I'll smash him but good!" As he began to charge forward, the heavily muscled fighter blurred into a streak of motion too fast to follow, throwing dozens of punches at Argo in a split second. Moving just as quickly, the android's hands blocked each blow before backhanding his assailant hard enough to knock him across the dock. He got to his feet, dazed and confused. "Hey, Get-Away, me and him was both movin' fast like you! What gives?" "I think we may be in something of a pickle, my friends," a fifth figure admitted, a masked man with a blonde ponytail who was rapping his knuckles against the doorframe of a nearby warehouse entrance to no effect. Tucked under his other arm, however, Cobalt Templar and Citizen recognized the Quantum Bauble!

  15. Even if Erik hadn't been something of an expert in the arena of body language and verbal sparring it would have been pretty obvious that Tona's explanation was as full of it as her face was full of piercings. Parts of it, anyway; he assumed she really was friends with Kristen but if he had to guess he would have bet that it was the girl with chocolate brown hair who'd dragged the other to the dojo. It was more the question of why she'd felt the need to evade the question that interested him but he decided not to call the teenager out in front of the group. Oh Dios, I'm starting to think like a mature adult and parent. Jasmine raised a legitimate point; Freedom City residents did have a decent chance to running into something a little more dangerous than the average mugger sooner or later. He wasn't sure how well any of the group would ever be able to do against a genetically engineered Grue supersoldier if it came down to it but it was at least worth preparing as best they could. Baxter he actually felt badly for for a moment. It wasn't too hard to imagine the slightly awkward, lanky youth being victimized by his peers. It sounded like he wasn't one to take the abuse passively, however, and the mere fact that he'd come out to learn to defend himself more effectively pleased Erik. Hopefully Kristin's good cheer and enthusiasm would help being the others out of their respective shells a bit. Reminds me a little bit of Zip before he went to future and came back all serious. He nodded simply. "Alright. I know I put you guys on the spot there a bit, but it's an important question." He took a breath and continued, "Jasmine's point actually leads me to another, which I can't believe I actually have to say out loud. If anybody here, just hypothetically, is some sort of super powered heroic type... I don't want to know." He raised his hands in front of himself, palms facing the group of four. "Seriously. I'm not going to be checking anybody's bag for tights or laser beam gloves or whatever. Hell, I can think of a few heroes who fight sloppy as all get out and I wouldn't mind showing them how to keep their fists up" He chuckled a little, breaking some of the moment's tension. "All I'm asking is that if you're going looking for trouble, you wait until you know what you're doing. A couple of sessions here is not going to make you the next Raven, clear?"
  16. Kimber jumped a little when the old woman spoke to her, remembering just in time to actually come back down to the ground again. Sneaking out into the city after nightfall when she could pass for a living human had become a pretty frequent occurrence, especially in the summer months between school years, but usually Indira or their other friends came with her. As it was, the summer heat had had her feeling cooped up in the stuffy dorm room and she'd decided to take Avro for an emergency sojourn into Freedom City proper. Disguised as a mundane tabby, the manticore cub adjusted his stance on her shoulders to lean forward and sniff curiously in the old woman's direction. "Oh, um... t-that's... nice?" she attempted to reply, a little unsure how to respond to the odd greeting. On one hand, the senior seemed a little off and might have been in need of her assistance. On the other, Nick had warned her about the potential dangers of those seeking to use ghosts for less than sterling purposes. "Maybe I just have one of those faces?" she suggested with a slightly apologetic smile, her helpful nature winning out over her caution as usual. "Are you out here all by yourself? Is there someone we could call?"
  17. Tagging, as requested.
  18. Erik listened receptively as each of them quartet briefly outlined their experience. Martel? Why does that sound familiar? he pondered inwardly when John greeted the petite white haired girl. The instructor had never claimed to be particularly good at remembering names, part of the reason he doled out nicknames so frequently. The explanation the blonde youth gave certainly explained his capable bearing and rigid formality but it raised a few questions, too. Surely the leader of a mercenary group could have hired a private tutor; swords might not have been standard battlefield equipment anymore but fencing was popular enough in the halls of exclusive learning. Still, Erik wasn't the one to question anyone else about their father issues. Tarrant obviously had a sense of humour and humility to him which recommended him almost immediately. Erik had to wonder what kind of experience the genial academic could have gotten with a sword outside of lessons; theater, perhaps? He had no reservations about believing Eve's background in gymnastics. She was obviously well built for it and moved with a sure grace that spoke to practiced control. Blodeuwedd sounded like a dedicated hobbyist to have dabbled in so many areas. That spoke of a lot of time invested but he has to wonder how focused she could be on any one thing with so much on her plate. All in all, though, it was a good start; he'd expected to have to suffer through more students completely new to even the fundamentals. "Alright, good stuff. While I get the paperwork put away, you guys can move into the actual training space," he suggested, indicating the larger section of the first floor with his thumb. "There are some hooks for jackets and bags in there. We'll get started as soon as everyone's ready to go."
  19. Kimber brought a spectral finger up to her lips in a plea for silence from the gryphon. She didn't know much about the creature's abilities or biology but it seemed awfully young at first glance and the suggestion that Milliner was traveling the world snatching baby beasties from their homes turned the poltergeist's eyes cold and vaguely predatory for a moment. Part of her, somewhere stirring in the back of her mind, wanted very badly to scare the auctioneer as badly as his abductees must have been. Shaking the urge off reluctantly, she continued on her way to find the discoloured wooden flooring. The teenage ghost took a moment to consider, frowning invisibly to herself. A simple trapdoor seemed a little anticlimactic but she recalled what she'd found when she went poking around the basement of Dunwich Prep. Not knowing what sort of protections the trapdoor itself might have, she dove headfirst into the regular wood beside it, traveling downward a ways before trying to find a tunnel of some kind.
  20. The swordsmen minions can neither avoid those attacks nor make those Toughness Saves! As for who he can reach with Takedown Attack 1, I'm visualizing the fight arranged like so, where M = Minion: M - M S P F G Z B M - M At rank 1 the targets do all have to be within 5' of each other, but for expediency's sake, I'll say he manages to take out all four of them. HoS Swashbuckler Sense Motive vs. DC 31. (1d20+15=31) Haha, oh well. She actually still gets the Master Plan bonus, too, but she beats it either way. 27 - Geckoman - Uninjured, 1HP 25 - HoS Zorro - Bruised x1, +2 Master Plan, +2 on next attack vs. Geckoman 24 - HoS Swashbuckler - Uninjured, +2 Master Plan 23 - HoS Pirate - Uninjured, +2 Master Plan, +2 on next attack vs. Fulcrum 16 - HoS Barbarian - Uninjured, -5 Defense, +2 Master Plan (3 Rounds) 15 - Fulcrum - Bruised x1, Staggered, 0HP, -2 Constitution 14 - HoS Hexcrafter - Uninjured 11 - Dragonfly - Bruised x1, 4HP, Fatigued Next Round 7 - HoS Atlas - Uninjured 6 - HoS Swordsmen (x1) - Uninjured
  21. "A good idea," Travis spoke up, punctuating the approval with a tap of his cane against the patio. "Communication... so much easier these days. Information, coordination, always been our advantage." Back in his day, detective work and preparation had meant a lot more legwork but it had meant the difference between success and defeat in more cases than not. The willingness of heroes to work together and pool resources unlike their villainous counterpart likewise had saved many a day. "Silversmith?" Trevor asked simply, taking a bite out of his burger.
  22. "Heh, yeah, you strike be as more of a rocker than a hipster," Erik assured Tarrant with a flash of white teeth. He and the brown haired academic might have been the 'old men' in the room but not by all that much, really. He doubted Tarrant was even thirty and fatherhood had given the West End native some perspective on age recently. The brief slip-up from Blodeuwedd still made him wince ruefully, however. "'Grandfather'? Ouch, right in the ego. At least we already know your aim is good, nieta," he joked, holding both hands over his heart as though wounded. He made a brief metal note of Eve's accent as she spoke up. He'd dealt with enough of his father's side of the family to recognize it despite his lack of talent with the French language himself and filed it away along with Blodeuwedd's apparent country of origin. "I don't think anyone's ever accused me of being particularly formal," he admitted. "Sounds like you've already had some training too, though. Since we're all here, how about everyone gives me an idea what sort of experience they've had? Fencing, other weapons training, unarmed fighting, gymnastics, ballet, whatever."
  23. Trevor pushed his sunglasses up slightly as he rubbed the bridge of his nose. He was truly out of his element; his usual policy of providing silent support through his presence alone didn't seem like it would be particularly effective here judging by the awkward pauses already filling the room. Inhaling slowly through his nose he finally attempted something else. "Punching criminals isn't easy," he noted without preface, his body language contained and difficult to read as ever. "Work at it every day because its worthwhile and rewarding. Obstacles arise. Work through them. Overcome them." Placing one hand atop the other he rested them on his chin. "Over-committing just as bad. Too much force, sloppy, disastrous. Really want to break the drug cartel, have to know when to let the informant go."
  24. The sudden blaze caught the assorted swordsmen off guard entirely, obscuring the doorway with its searing fury. One man, in a wide brimmed hat and high collar, started to surge forward as the door opened only to take the brunt of the cone and drop to the ground in a groaning pile that smelled of burnt hair. Others had the wherewithal to roll about across the lawn to put out the flames licking at their clothes but had clearly had the fight taken out of them nevertheless. Cries of surprise and pain sprang up and turned to moans and shaky curses. Within the span of heartbeats a half dozen expertly trained fighters had been reduced to a single man, his face partially concealed by larger sunglasses under a cowboy hat and between tufts of now lopsided facial hair. Calmly smothering a small flame on his jacket's lapel with one hand he brandished a blade with the other. "Ah ain't out quite yet, missy," he assured Mara before continuing his attack.
  25.
