ic Can I Borrow A Cup of Adventure? (IC)
Gizmo replied to Avenger Assembled's topic in The North End
Making a good impression with the Whites had frankly slid several notches lower on Trevor's ranked priorities over the last hour or so but he spared them a brief inclination of his head as he stepped smoothly around Clarissa to pluck his sunglasses from the kitchen table. "Sorry. Robot mimes," he restated in the same sort of tone one might have used to commiserate over heavy traffic or poor weather. "It happens." He gave them a coolly confident look that probably would have been more calming and reassuring if he'd waited until after he'd replaced the opaque lenses over his discoloured eyes, then stepped back over to his Erin, ready to leave.- 118 replies

Well, if it's all the same to you, I'd just as soon go with Jack and Jill. Midnight's done a lot of interdimensional traveling. Like... a lot. It's old hat to him. If this is supposed to be in the vein of the Thanagarian Invasion, you've got a Superman, Batman and Green Lantern; somebody needs to be the one to say, "Hey! That's a giant dinosaur!"

Trevor made a muted sound that could reasonably be taken as agreement with the suggestion to return to Seattle as soon as possible. Ideally he would have preferred heading straight back to Freedom, but he felt the Whites deserved some sort of in-person explanation and perhaps apology. The specific situation was not one with any established social norms so far as he knew. "Powers aren't being interfered with?" he directed at Mark, keeping his chin tilted downward to cover more of his face with his hat's brim.- 118 replies

"He's going to need to know," Trevor told Erin seriously, stepping back enough to slip off his jacket and hand it to her. Undone overtop her costume, it created a look that could pass for unusual but passable winter wear, while his black, long-sleeve top and black pants wouldn't draw any particular attention. His unusual eyes were a larger problem, but tipping the brim of his fedora low over his forehead would be sufficient if they could avoid speaking with anyone up close. "Not the most careful person in the first place." Mark having an inaccurate perception of Erin's current durability could be potentially disastrous in the field... and, really, anywhere was 'the field' when it came to the probability skewing reality manipulator.- 118 replies

I'd be up for this, definitely. Jack would probably have the easiest time moving around unnoticed, between his normal appearance and Bluff (JIll optional!), Midnight might be crossing over with Arrowhawk a bit but he's certainly a 'gearhead' in a more literally mechanical sense and Wail is... well, he's Wail.

Ellie listened to the halting explanation with a warm look of endeared amusement. "Have I told you how brilliant you are yet today?" she asked in a sing-song, teasing voice, reaching over to tap one finger on the tip of Mara's nose while the inventor was distracted by her considerations of the physics-defying device. Coming from anyone else, the ramshackle appearance of the teleporter combined with the vague explanation would have drawn out her natural skepticism but she trusted anything her girlfriend had built implicitly. Well. Anything she's built during a week she's remembered to sleep, anyway. Stepping closer to the platform, she did a quick visual sweep to make sure there wasn't anything obvious that needed to been avoided, she sighed. "Mmh, 'vacation'. This was such a good idea."

Gizmo replied to Avenger Assembled's topic in The North End
Lacing the long fingers of one of his hands between the digits they were enveloping at Erin's side, Trevor lifted his other arm to place his hand carefully on her cheek. His head tilted slightly to one side as he took a fraction of a step closer, examining her face as the hint of a faint smile pulled at the corner of his thin lips. "Inspire many emotions," he told her, his deadpan absolute. "Pity isn't one of them." He was still upset and a little confused - he'd have to get the full explanation regarding Oliver at some point - but he couldn't manage to work up any real anger knowing that she'd chosen to give up something so important to her rather than lose him. "Hm. Still your birthday. What do you want to do?"- 118 replies

The persona of Midnight was one of cold retribution, unfeeling and unrelenting, impossible to sway or evade. One might have assumed that stemmed from the lack of empathy from the men behind the mask, but that wasn't the case. Trevor had inherited from his grandfather a belief in the basic goodness of humanity, that anyone had the potential to make the right choice and do the right thing, given the chance. That meant that he could appreciate the unthinkable situation Ratner had been placed in since birth. It didn't mean he was sympathetic. That potential for good came with a responsibility and whatever the circumstances the extra-dimensional woman's decisions lay on her own head even if there was blame to be spread elsewhere as well. "Don't need to judge you," he intoned in his gravelly voice, betraying no emotion. "Already judged yourself."

ic Can I Borrow A Cup of Adventure? (IC)
Gizmo replied to Avenger Assembled's topic in The North End
Trevor was absolutely still and silent for a beat, then another, then a third. Finally he raised his hands with deliberate care to place them on either side of his head, squeezing his eyes shut. "You... can be infuriating. Do you realize that?" Opening his eyes he took a step close and lowered his hands to place them over Erin's where they were wrapped around her own torso. "Love you, Erin White. You. Not going anywhere." Looking her square in the eye from under the brim of his beaten fedora, he admitted, "Pretty upset with you right now, for not telling me sooner. Still not going anywhere."- 118 replies

Trevor let out a slow breath as he processed the confession. On one hand, he was relieved. In lieu of facts, his mind had slowly begun to construct all manner of possible scenarios, each more awful than the previous. On the other, he found himself to be legitimately angry that Erin had intentionally kept this from him for so long. He could appreciate how devastating the whole ordeal must have been for her, given how much she'd come to define herself based on her strength, but he would have thought, would have hoped that she'd have felt able to come to him with it so that they could deal with it together. It was a stinging blow that she hadn't. Inhaling, he began by raising a single finger. "First, raw power is not what makes you a hero. We can deal with this." Lifting another finger to join the first, he continued, "Second, you could have told me. Should have. Why not?"- 118 replies

After very nearly a year of witnessing Mara's casual discarding of the commonly held rules of physics, Ellie was able to take them largely in stride but she wasn't entirely able to shake the feeling that her girlfriend's fantastic devices deserved some fanfare. "Luckily I'm not grading on presentation," she drawled, giving the engineer a light cuff in the shoulder coupled with an appreciative grin. "Should I bother asking how it works or just be properly impressed on general principle?"

"It doesn't get to be just your problem," Trevor insisted, spreading his hands slightly in the closest he ever came to an emphatic gesture. "Affects the team, affects my planning, affects-- no." Abruptly stopping his train of thought, he lifted and open hand in a forestalling move as he took a breath. "No. Forget that. Don't care." Distress played over his feature, his distinctive eyes exposed with his sunglasses still in Seattle. "Are you sick? Injured? I don't know, and you won't tell me." Despite everything he'd seen, everything he'd done, the young man known as Midnight could still feel fear and he felt it now.- 118 replies

"Can call herself when Edge catches up with her." Siding back on of his sleeves to reveal a matte black gauntlet that met the edge of his glove and covered his forearm, Midnight calmly pressed a sequence of buttons, throwing up a localized interference field that would prevent any unseen surveillance devices from recording them. He almost let himself become side-tracked by Erin choice of words about her 'real' counterpart, but instead set his jaw as he unfastened his mask and undid the the buckles of his coat, quickly adopting a passably civilian appearance. That done, Trevor folded his arms across his chest, his expression carefully neutral. "Don't like to pry. You know I don't," he began, a little frustration slipping into his level tone despite his best efforts. Erin had a way of bringing out those touches of emotion in him even when he tried to keep them as buried as usual. "Need to trust me with this."- 118 replies

While the heroes spoke and laughed with the children, an elderly gentleman in a simple black outfit approached, smiling with satisfaction. Father MacElvie, the architect behind the event nodded his owlish head, seemingly a little too large for his wizened frame, hands clasped behind his back. There was no question that the old fellow had known exactly what he was doing when he invited these particular men to play the roll of Santa Claus and he made no apologies for those selections. This was first and foremost a publicity stunt and decades of sermons had not left MacElvie without a certain appreciation of spectacle. LaMarr returned the nod as the priest approached, setting a giggling girl down from his shoulder and back to the mall floor. "How are we doing so far?" "Oh, quite well, quite well," MacElvie assured him, head bobbing absently even as the eyes behind his wire-rimmed glasses sparkled keenly. "A great many generous donations, yes, and perhaps more importantly quite a bit of attention, hm? Ha ha, yes."

Most people would have classified Midnight's silent response to Wander's question as 'standing still'. Objectively, that was a fair assessment but the amount of time the auburn haired powerhouse had spent interpreting the laconic young man's muted body language gave her deeper insight into his meaning. In this case, it was clear that a serious conversation was imminent. In the meantime, he placed a pair of fingers to one ear as he activated the communications rig imbedded in his mask and connected to the local cell towers. Getting through to Isabel Martel, better known as the prominent French heroine Binary, thanks to a mutual acquaintance, he tersely explained the situation before handing the resolution of the situation over to Edge, the only one of them with any actual jurisdiction in the matter.- 118 replies

Midnight noted the ineffectiveness of Wander's attack with a deepening grimace. He wasn't exactly about to complain about the more careful fighting style Erin had adopted of late but it had certainly raised a few questions. The day she couldn't dent a giant robot mime on the first try was the day he asked her point blank what was going on, awkwardness be damned. She'd had plenty of time to volunteer the information on her own terms and whatever was going on was affecting their work. Still, there were more immediate concerns. Darting about under the cover of his cloud of midnight mist, he cracked a handful of vials from his belt against Ultramime's ankles, the caustic acid inside splash across metal and slowly weakening the joints it touched, softening the impressively durable target up bit by bit.- 118 replies

Mara's enthusiastic greeting elicited a beaming smile devoid of distancing sarcasm from the the coltish brunette as she stepped inside and closed the door behind herself before giving the unusually chipper inventor a peck on the cheek. "Pfft, 'trouble'. Just a question of priorities, Marbar," Ellie assured her primly, though her cheeks were a rosy sienna from the appreciation as much as the cold outside. "Happy birthday." A rich crimson scarf filled the space between her tapered chin and the wide collar of her black peacoat and she shifted the strap of the light tan messenger bag clung across one shoulder in response to the question. "Good to go whenever you are."

Mara and Ellie take the day off to celebrate the former's birthday! It goes about as according to plan as you'd expect.

Ellie Espadas rarely had difficulty finding things to occupy her days. Even with her natural aptitude and the considerable knowledge she'd already accrued, her pre-med course load at Freedom City University was proving more difficult than she'd honestly expected, merging into a blur of lectures, exams and papers. Thankfully her prodigious capability for memory retention saved her from spending too much time studying and reviewing, freeing her nights for racing about the rooftops of the West End as Jill O'Cure, the metamagi medic and one of the more consistent members of the ever-shifting roster of the Interceptors. Even on top of all that, she managed to squeeze in time volunteering at local hospitals and clinics, learning from experienced physicians while surreptitiously using her superhuman abilities to make a difference where she could. With all of those juggled responsibilities, it had taken considerable effort and cunning to clear her schedule for an entire day. She'd gotten a head start on essays, called in favours and swapped shifts. Not many events would have been worth the effort. Today, however, was. Today was Mara Hallomen's birthday and, arriving at the engineer's apartment in Parkside, Ellie was determined to dedicate the entire day to celebrating it properly.

LaMarr had a brief moment of hesitation as he had to adjust the position of the hand he offered Ross in return to meet the correct set of arms, but shoot the proffered mitt firmly. The older man's hands tended to engulf most handshakes but with the massive cartoonist he found himself on the receiving end of that phenomenon. "You can call me LaMarr," he noted, craning his neck to regard the smiling, crimson visage. "I've had to confiscate a few of your funny books in my class," the civics teacher continued, flashing a grin that showed teeth. "Skimmed 'em before handing them back. You do good work." Releasing Pyre's hand to greet a small group of children Al-Misri had brought over to say hello, he crouched down on one knee and asked in a voice like jovial thunder if they'd been good that year. There was no denying that the billionaire knew how to work a crowd, but LaMarr was more stuck by Asad's determination to stay off to one side of the spotlight. It was a trait he'd seen develop in outgoing high-schoolers as they matured through their formative years, an empathy and awareness of others that went beyond simple attention seeking. Undoubtedly the wealthy playboy had been a good choice for the event.

Sprinting down the side of the tower until he was close enough to the ground to fire his grappling line and swing toward the new threat, Midnight grimaced behind his featureless mask. "Langue des signes, à partir d'un mime? Pathétique." He expected a certain level of professionalism and commitment from a theme-villain; this just offended his sensibilities. Touching down lightly, he poured midnight mist from his every pore as he ran, quickly blanketing the entire area is a shrouding cloud. Having used the bulk of his electromagnetic devices to magnetize the tower, the black-clad vigilante instead drew a handful of explosive throwing disks from his belt and lobbed them in an arc at the hulking robot. To his continued annoyance, despite finding their mark, the detonations didn't seem to phase Ultramime in the least.- 118 replies
