ic Graduation Day: There Won't Be A Next Time (IC)
Gizmo replied to Avenger Assembled's topic in The Realms Beyond
Midnight looked across the devastation they'd wrought and frowned behind his mask. "...too easy," he muttered in his soft but eerily clear voice. It seemed a ludicrous statement; certainly they'd overcome absurd odds to reach this point, performed feats hitherto unimaginable. Even so, their success sat poorly with him. He could believe the Terminus forces would leave only expendable drones on a world set to be destroyed, but why would Physician Friendly have been there, or the specifically tailored zombies? If they'd known enough about Midnight and his allies to prepare those horrors, they must have known they would serve only to delay them. Which could only mean one thing. "Trap," he stated with abrupt certainty, picking up his pace.- 60 replies

The television was indeed only a place for the gregarious artificial intelligence to project his image upon, his actual program processing elsewhere. "Well, I was told to make myself scarce during that ladies' poker night, so I didn't get a chance to introduce myself them, but our little meatsack fixer here talks about you so much I feel like I already know you," Vince confided, leaning over his desk with a vaguely conspiratorial air while, on his command, the center of the room lowered and slid away in segments to reveal a stairway downward into the Underground.

ic Graduation Day: There Won't Be A Next Time (IC)
Gizmo replied to Avenger Assembled's topic in The Realms Beyond
Stepping smoothly around Wander as they switched opponents, Midnight regarded his morbid, adolescent double for a brief moment before making a short sound through his mask: snorting in derision. "Practically therapy." It wasn't that Trevor had any deep seated self-hatred, but this creature had taken the aspect of a time in his life that the young man was not particularly proud of, one when he'd been confused and angry and more than a little melodramatic about his problems. He'd come a long way to become the bastion of calm stoicism that stored forth and simply extended a blade tipped arm as the zombie leapt toward him, skewering its own face on the pair of curved steel tines. Retracting them back into his sleeve with a casual gesture, he let the husk drop to the floor. "Longer reach."- 60 replies

"M'good," Ellie replied, trying not to look too amused by the serious consideration Mara brought to things that other people might have dismissed as trivial. "Don't think I've mentioned yet how much I like the choker, by the way," she noted as the pair walked up the few steps and into the brownstone building. "I really like the choker." "Fashion and function!" an upbeat voice agreed as they made their way into the main living room. The large, flat panel television abruptly turned itself on to reveal the life-sized image of a broadly grinning man in a bombastic, lime green suit, teeth gleaming as he leaned forward from behind a talk show host's desk. "And this is coming from someone who ought to know!" he added, tugging at the collar of his suit jacket. As he did, the clothing shifted smoothly into an equally bold plaid pattern in the signature greys and blues of Dragonfly's armor, while his tie darkened to black with a cerulean print of a four-winged insect. "Fifth Iteration Networked Computer Entity, at your service, though my friends call me Vince, and I can already tell we're going to be fantastic friends, now that I've finally been allowed to say hello!"

"Charming," Midnight drawled, managing to convey all the scorn of an eyeroll in his flat tone. The macabre pair was certainly disturbing, but it wasn't anything worse than the horrors they'd already seen, or so he told himself with enough conviction to feel sure of it. "Didn't much like myself at that age," he noted frankly, a nonchalant flick of his wrist sending a pair of long, thin blades extending out from each of his sleeves, the twined claws curving ever so slightly over his knuckles. "Switch?" he offered.- 60 replies

Midnight paused for a moment, considering. He wasn't particularly eager to see what unpleasant surprise had been prepared for him, but Erin had a point about tying up loose ends. Leaving whatever was in the last two coffins be would probably come back to literally haunt them. There was also the issue of closure. "Hnn..." he grunted in resignation through his mask's vocal filter stepping forward to stand equidistant from Wander and the other box. "Taking bets? Guessing my grandfather," he hazarded flatly as he steeled himself.- 60 replies

Setting her book down as she heard the motorcycle approaching, Ellie looked quizzically at her watch in response to Mara's apology, her expression quickly turning to one of wry amusement. "Three whole minutes. I may never forgive you," she drawled, standing up from the steps and cracking her back quietly before stepping across the sidewalk to plant a quick peck on the flustered blonde's forehead and take her hand. "Wait, no, I'm over it. C'mon inside."

ic Graduation Day: There Won't Be A Next Time (IC)
Gizmo replied to Avenger Assembled's topic in The Realms Beyond
With a muted grunt, Midnight finished pulling the final connection inside the reality bomb's housing loose, allowing him to carefully remove the cosmic lightning rod and stow it away with the other three. Turning to take stock of the rest of the room, the somber young man wasn't particularly surprised to find that his teammates had the situation well in hand. Presumably Physician Friendly had intended to release the macabre doppelgangers all at once amid some overwrought theatrics. Clearly, that hadn't worked out for him. "Should go, tempting fate," he suggested, eying the remaining pair of coffins warily.- 60 replies

Date: July 13th 2011 It had been two months to the day that Willow and Thrude had joined the Interceptors and moved into the brownstone apartment building. At least the goddess of thunder and lightning had moved in immediately; once the novelty of being indoors had worn off, it had haven some convincing to get Willow to actually use the room she'd been provided with rather than sleeping in the oak tree in their backyard. Even so, it was in those branches that she could often be found, and so it was there that the fencer known as Jack of all Blades went looking, dressed in simple civilian attire as he stepped out the back door. "Hey, pretty lady," he called, sauntering into the summer sun, "you around?"

It had taken a while, given the hectic schedules involved, but with her brother's insistence, Ellie Espadas had finally managed to find time for her girlfriend to come over to the Interceptor's underground base for a combat training session. Erik was adamant that Mara have at least some fundamental hand-to-hand fighting skills just in case she was ever caught without her inventions. Mildly annoying as the overprotective streak was, Ellie was grateful that her older sibling evidently liked her partner enough to be concerned in the first place, and if in the process the petite engineer ended up in sweaty workout gear, well, that was just a consequence they'd have to live with. While Erik got things set up below, the younger Espadas waited on the steps outside the brownstone apartment building's front door, already changed into shorts and a dark grey vest top and enjoying the sun while she flipped through a textbook she'd brought out with her.

Outside, the Fearsome Five were distracted from their material mimicking collaborator's transformation as the weather outside abruptly shifted, a torrential downpour coming down as though a facet had suddenly been turned on all the way, strong winds knocking the fliers about as they compensated. "Ah! Apologies, please," the airborne alien cried as the rainwater made a heavy mess of her impressive, forest green hair. "Such meteorological shifts are common to thine homeworld?" "Dammit, Khania, you know real English," Blackfire snapped irritably, evidently less bothered by the water than the others as it ran smoothly over the lenses of his artificial eyes. "Bad enough we have to put up with Fawkes' accent..." "Unnatural," Diehard muttered to himself, the dangerously traumatized man's eyes vibrating back and forth as he dropped into a ready stance. "Heroes...!" The Daka Man knocked his diamond like fist together, giving off an inorganic sound. "Perfect! I gotta make my bones sometime, right Johnny?" "Blackfire," the android corrected through gritted teeth. "Right, right, that's what I'm talkin' 'bout," his dimmer ally agreed, nodding amiably. "Make a name! C'mon and get some!"

"Hey, hands up, who's shrugged off mind control from Medea?" Jack countered with an exaggerated sniff, lifting one gloved palm into the air. "And I called her fat," he added with a pleased smirk, which fell from his face a split second later as his expression turned contemplative. "And I got shot. So that was less fun." "Tch, and who had to patch you up?" Jill grumbled to herself before looking to the other heroes. "So we're just going to go up and be all, 'Say, been anything weird lately?'" The young woman shrugged helplessly. "I'm not saying I have a better plan, I just want to be clear."

Resisting the urge to rub the bridge of his nose through his mask, Midnight broke into a sprint for the reality bomb while speaking in a level but easily audible voice to the others. "Switch. Templar, fight the little one. Edge, take the alien." Reaching the terrible device, he sent a surge of midnight mist into his arms just long enough to tear the access panel clear off before plunging his hands in to begin working. "Wander, check on Sage then help them." The young man wasn't even watching the rest of the fight, busying himself with the delicate procedure of removing the bomb's cosmic lightning rod. "And no one open any more of those damn caskets."- 60 replies

Dismounting with a brief nod of thanks to Red Falcon and Redbird, Midnight stalked after the others. Taking only a brief moment to quickly look about the laboratory, noting the chuckling monster in doctor's clothing with distinct disdain as he walked quickly but calmly forward. "Obstacle implies delay," he corrected Sage, stepping past her while inky black mist rolled about his feet, almost making it look as though he were gliding as his cold, gravelly voice echoed disconcertingly. His manner was clear: Physician Friendly warranted not a millisecond of his time as he made his way to the reality bomb, and woe to the Terminus fiend if he drew attention to himself.- 60 replies

Smoothly banking Redbird just enough to watch Wander touchdown and begin her assault, Midnight smiled faintly behind his featureless black mask. Love that woman... Turning his attention back to the second mass of mangled flesh and metal lifting off of the ground to meet them, his glossy onyx and sanguine eyes narrowed, his gloved fingers flexing over the handlebars. Around him, bolts of righteous lightning and volleys of blue fire ripped through the air, while Sage danced through the mindless horde, a graceful needle punching holes is yielding cloth. Amidst the chaos and the fury, the dark young man was a cool, collected point of calm. Flicking a row of toggles one after another with almost casual precision, he let the precise, tactical element of his nature take hold in full. "Inertial dampeners," he instructed the sentient vehicle, and their passengers suddenly found themselves more securely affixed to their perches as gravimetric projectors established an artificial sense of 'down'. "All weapons full. Templar, hold onto Edge, please. Death Blossom..." Noting Eve's position and that of each remaining Omegadrone in the sky, he paused for a split second, his timing exact. "Execute." With a sudden wrenching of his arms, he sent the flying motorcycle spinning end over end like a gyroscope gone mad, the Furion vehicle's laser batteries unloading bolt after bolt of red hot death in every direction as it arced. Unfolding like vicious petals on a flowering plant, the beams struck true, boring though the foot soldiers of entropy they had been specifically designed to slay. The maddening motion took not even a full minute, but as Redbird finally slowed and righted, the lifeless husks of the opposing forces fell to the ruined city in a macabre rain. Within moments of their arrival, Young Freedom had lain waste to thousands. Pointing them toward the reality bomb's location, Midnight knew they were only getting started.- 60 replies

Yeah, Geez, that's the point. The big guns wear capes: Batman, Superman, or in-universe Statesman and Hero-1. This way if you see a character running around with a cape, it means something. Not only do you have to play and stick with a character long enough, you have to go through a series of missions that introduce you to more of the setting's history. It's like the way the Centurion's colours and cape mean something in the Freedom City universe.
